HELLDIVERS is the most fun you're going to have with friendly fire

I've been having a lot of fun with this game so far. Helldivers is a 4-player co-op, top down twin-stick arcade styled shooter that borrows heavily, heavily on the aesthetic of Starship Troopers. However, it's not all just good, dumb fun! Tactics are an important part of this game, as is being a team player. Wanna go running and gunning? Be a bad ass lone wolf? Good luck. You're only going to get so far before you end up a greasy stain on the scenery. Teamwork is vital in this game, not just in being at the right place at the right time, but also in not being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Friendly fire is always on in this game, so let's place so those shots carefully! Know your target, know what's in line with it, and know what's behind it - otherwise you just may find yourself surrounded and alone after shotgunning your squadmates.

As of right now, there are three primary enemies that your squad can choose to battle against: Bugs (think tyranids, zerg, Starship Troopers, etc), Cyborgs (a mix of robots, machines, and cybernetic baddies) and Illuminates (Protoss styled energy beings). In the ship's ready room that serves as a game lobby, the squad leader will choose one of these factions to battle, then he can select from a list of planets (stages) with a range of difficulty and a variety of missions. Most planets will have 2-3 missions (each with a variety of objectives to complete) which, when completed, render the planet pacified and under human control. Basically it's just a glorified stage select. The real meat is in the missions themselves and the objectives you need to complete.

Mission objectives come in a variety of flavors: take and hold territory, escort missions, bomb enemy bases, find and recover intelligence, etc. And of course, on every map there will be enemies and firefights are inevitable. Running into enemy patrols is only a matter of time - of course, if you take them out quickly before they raise an alarm, you can increase your longevity by avoiding drawn out fights. Eventually, though, some enemy is gonna see you and the alarm is gonna go out and that's when the hordes start coming for you. In this game, it's always better to avoid a fight, but if you need to hold an objective for a minute or so, you're going to need to use a number of weapons and assets.

There's a variety of equipment and weapons in this game, needless to say. But the system of deploying them is fairly unique and ridiculously fun. You input a series of button commands on the d-pad that corresponds to one of your assets - do it correctly and you can toss out a beacon that will bring in a drop pod with that asset. These can range from weapons and ammo to vehicles and even drop pods to bring in reinforcements (re-spawning your teammates). Be careful, though, since drop pods will pretty much kill whatever they hit, friend or foe. It's always funny to see a new player join a public game and drop pod in on top of his new squadmates.

The goal of each mission is to complete the mission objectives to the best of your ability, then get to the extraction point, call down a drop ship, and hold the LZ until the ship arrives (usually 60-90 seconds later). Of course, you'll be swarmed by enemies trying to prevent that, so use your gun turrets, mech suits, APCs, jump packs, and the rest of your arsenal to hold off the enemy! Your allies might take a hit and get down - they can recover on their own, but you can also pick them back up and get them back into the fight! Set off a bomb and don't think you can outrun the timer? Hit the deck and throw yourself prone and (hopefully) you'll live through the explosion! Big bad tank coming at you? Call in a two-man rocket package - a rocket launcher with an ammunition pack (best used by two people!). Need to go somewhere fast? Call down an APC and have all 4 players ride (1 driving, 3 gunning).

No doubt there'll be griefing, but I've already had some amazing co-op action in this game and seriously recommend taking a look. B)

Seems like a match made in heaven for me. <3

May or may not get some vids from this posted, depending on when I get some recording equipment here.

But seriously, guys, if you have a PS3 or PS4, definitely at least take a look at this one. Even with pubbies, it's been some of the best co-op gaming I've enjoyed in a long, long time.
