Oooh interesting. It’ll make it much harder to dig into the game files (and pirate them) if they’re kept online.

I've put about 30 hours into Xenoblade Chronicles 2 now:

Story/Art direction: So far I'm enjoying the story and art direction. There's definitely some JRPG/Anime tropes that can be a bit cringey at times, but overall it's mostly charming. There's a good mix of drama and comedy.

Gameplay: Personally I really like it... it seems like a more organic modernization of turn based systems, and has a pretty robust combo setup on top of it. That being said, it is relatively complicated so it can be overwhelming if you see the battle system without playing the game first. The game does a really good job of easing you into each part of the system, to the point where I'm just now unlocking access to every part of it 30 hours into the game. You'll be familiar with one function by the time it introduces you to a new function.

Graphics: Mixed bag. The art style and world design are absolutely great. The game has pretty decent lighting and material effects (though static shadows). Textures are generally pretty clean and detailed. Resolution, though, is where the game struggles. 720p in docked mode, and in the 400p-500p region for handheld most of the time. It can look downright low resolution at times in handheld mode. That being said, its never so bad that it takes away from the game, it's just disappointing and hopefully they can patch it up.

Overall I'm really enjoying it, but it's definitely not a game for everyone. If you liked JRPGs from the 16/32bit era, you'll likely really enjoy this. If you are more the action RPGer, or don't enjoy RPGs at all, stay away.

Fantastic news: Bayonetta 3 was announced today, is a Switch exclusive, and Bayonetta 1&2 will be making it to the console in Feb next year.

Nintendo has confirmed that it has sold 10 million Switch units as of December 10th. This is roughly on-par with the first year sales rate of PS4, and a bit faster than XB1, which took 12 months.

This has doubled the initial 5M projected to sell at the 12 month mark. It’s not hard to imagine them outselling WiiU by March, once pre- and post-Xmas sales are taken into account.

Not bad for a little machine that apparently had no games at launch, and was apparently overpriced to buggery.

In the news this week, Switch has overtaken the Wii as the fastest selling console ever in North America, and in Japan has beaten the PlayStation 2 to the most sales for a console’s first 12 months.

Both are huge achievements. What a massive turnaround from the Wii U days for Nintendo.

    Surprise!

There was a Nintendo Direct Mini a few hours ago. Salient points:

Super Mario Odyssey is getting a free new balloon hunt mode in February, featuring Luigi. Players get to play hide n’ seek with balloons hidden by other players online.

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is being ported across from Wii U on May 4th, which is great because it’s an awesome 2D platformer that will see a bigger audience on Switch.

Kirby Star Allies puffs it’s way to Switch on March 16th. Umm… yep!

Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition, another Wii U port which is also getting all the DLC and content from the 3DS version, as well as BotW outfits for Link and Zelda. So now it’ll feature every character from both original games. Out March 22 in Japan, and sometime soon-ish everywhere else.

Fe, an ‘indie’ game from EA (hack… spit!) is due for release on Feb 16th.

Mario Tennis Aces announced. No release date yet.

New characters for Pokken Tournanent and DK for Mario + Rabbids if you’ve bought the season passes for those games.

Dark Souls Remastered is coming! It’s out late May, and is getting a docked 1080/30 presentation. The grownup consoles are getting it too, but at 60fps. Nice!
