I’m posting this here and in the VR thread because, you know…

The two subjects seemed like they’d never cross.

    But here we are.

That's kinda neat, though do you have to hold the controllers next to your head?

They haven't shown yet. My guess/hope is that you leave the controllers on the system, and use a second set or a Pro controller to play the game.

    Whelp, I was wrong.

“During VR play, the Joy-Con controllers are attached to the Nintendo Switch system and accessible on either side of the Toy-Con VR Goggles, allowing players to simply hold the system up to their face and control the game as normal.”

As if wearing VR wasn’t dorky enough already!

I just hope they nail the sense of scale you get in proper VR. I’m kinda interested in Mario but I’m dying to play BotW.

So here are a couple of screen shots of BotW VR. If you open them on your phone and hold it about a foot from your face, but then divert your gaze to look 'through' the screen, you will be able to line the images up as a single stereo image.

It's like a weeny little VR world!

Of course, the lenses on the Labo VR goggles should expand that out properly and fill your field of view. Same (maybe) if you've got a Google Cardboard-like device.

The Nintendo engineer interviewed in that blog post says that there will be no changes to the way BotW works - it's identical between standard and VR versions. You just turn it on at any time with a simple toggle in the options menu. Plus you can choose to have motion aiming on or off. Their intention was to allow players to turn it on if they saw something neat, or play the whole game like that. To them it doesn't matter, and they preferred to do this rather than walling off the VR functionality to just limited areas of the game.

I'm pumped that Nintendo is doing this, even if I may not end up buying a Labo VR kit in the near future.

Since all the rumors now seem to be pointing at a more inexpensive Switch this year and a "modestly" upgraded one in 2020, I pulled the trigger on a Switch. It'll be here tomorrow, and looking forward to having it on my flight to Mexico City next week. I know Zelda is a must have, what else do I need to get?

FWIW, If you have Amazon Prime, you get Twitch Prime free, and you get a year of Nintendo online with it as a freebie.
