Depends on how corrupt/fucked/etc the host city is to begin with. See: Athens, Atlanta, or Beijing and Moscow for semi-authoritarian communist governments. Over the last 40 years, LA, Seoul, Barcelona, Sydney, London and Tokyo seem to be doing ok. The next cities are Paris and LA, and they have reasonably strong economies.
I can somewhat reasonably state that Sydney did do a lot of infrastructure spending to prepare for the 2000 Olympics, and that city didn’t feel a huge dent in public spending afterwards. DN might be able to provide more info there. Australia has always been pretty well able to soak up any unforeseen problems.
