Yes in the far distant future when Olympic Games happen again...
seems the deadline is approaching for nomination of host cities and so far there is only 1, Brisbane Australia.

That would be cool. A nice spacing since our Sydney games. A different city, our 3rd biggest, with Melbourne and Sydney both having hosted games.

Now its not confirmed and technically it means getting to negotiate, rather than just be given hosting rights. But I think that sort of negotiation should be easy, county with track record of being able to host games and not bankrupt us or have facilities that rot away.

And while 2032 sounds sooo far away, damn it is just 11 years. I should still be kicking then.

Yes it does look promising. It might even be the cheapest Games for the last 40 years!

A total no-brainer if you consider the marketing draw, smart economics, relative quality of life, and our relentless efforts to squash COVID, allowing our masters the time to be able to make these decisions.

There will always be the poo-poo brigade (usually the media and the political opposition) who will use this to try and bring the Qld government down, but look at what we actually need to prepare for 2032.

A larger seating capacity at the 'Gabba? Maybe a roof over the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre? We already have a world-class velodrome, multiple stadiums and venues for a wide variety of sporting disciplines, and a plan to upgrade other public infrastructure. We hosted the last Com Games only three years ago too. Almost everything is in place.

I worked as a volunteer at the Com Games, and I'll put my hand up for the 'Lympics too

The Olympics usually ruin decimate the finances of the city that hosts it, unless that city already has the infrastructure in place, as you guys say Brisbane has.

Depends on how corrupt/fucked/etc the host city is to begin with. See: Athens, Atlanta, or Beijing and Moscow for semi-authoritarian communist governments. Over the last 40 years, LA, Seoul, Barcelona, Sydney, London and Tokyo seem to be doing ok. The next cities are Paris and LA, and they have reasonably strong economies.

I can somewhat reasonably state that Sydney did do a lot of infrastructure spending to prepare for the 2000 Olympics, and that city didn’t feel a huge dent in public spending afterwards. DN might be able to provide more info there. Australia has always been pretty well able to soak up any unforeseen problems.

It helps that we have a sporting culture, so specialist facilities such as a velodrome or rowing venue are continued to be used.
Sydney committed to building the pool and athletics track before we got the games (the athletics track was used as the warmup venue, the main stadium was built next to it)
We built an Olympic precinct that is great. Previously it had been one lame venue in the middle of nowhere. Now its got a well used main stadium (concerts, various football codes, cricket), indoor venue (hosts concerts, basketball), swimming pool, tennis centre, hockey centre etc. The area is pretty cool, actually nice to walk around.

We did use existing multipurpose venues for things like boxing, wrestling, table tennis. I think very few venues are now unused, maybe the mountain bike course. So we didnt waste money building things that just ended up rotting or being torn down.

Brisbane also recently had the Commonwealth Games, while it has some different sports it still means that some core infrastructure exists.

So the big capital expenses arent that bad and even if more is needed they will probably be kept and used.

And the Olympic Committee has announced Brisbane is the preferred host.
So its hasnt been awarded the games, but its officially the front runner (and so far, front runner in a race of 1) and has moved to the next stage of negotiations.

Umm, *clears throat* excuse me, it was AkChtUaLlY the Gold Coast that hosted the Commonwealth Games...

(But Brisvegas did hold the shooting and track cycling events at the facilities in Belmont)

And interesting that its been mentioned that to save costs they may hold the rowing + white water events in Sydney, reusing the venues from the 2000 games. A spread out Olympics is never ideal, especially for competitors that are at the remote locations. But its all close enough they could do opening ceremony and fly back down to Sydney.
