Yeah, sorry to hear about you favorite aunt Lucy...

Also sorry to hear about your least favorite grandma...

I guess I can understand now why you have such a problem with Christianity... if I had a grandma like that, there’s probably no way in hell I’d believe in whatever she believes in too...

Still, something I recently saw on roofer’s FB: “God prefers kind atheists over hateful Christians!”

    I totally agree with that...

May aunt Lucy Rest In Peace...

Thanks everyone. After the past few months, I'm really hoping that this'll be the last punch in the gut.

My maternal grandmother was, unfortunately, a mean, spiteful person who hated her daughter-in-law, hated her son-in-law, and anyone who wasn't blood wasn't good enough. She hated my brother-in-law, and she hated Michele. She also really hated Mexicans. Her final words were the most "religious" things she ever said (well, wrote) to us.

Her final words have nothing to do with how I feel about Christianity, which I don't feel like I have that much of a problem with. I mostly mentioned that to contrast what going to Arizona was normally like - one side was criticism and coldness, the other was acceptance and warmth, despite having gone through years of trying to win her mother-in-law's acceptance. I am realizing that I didn't mention that they lived about 10 miles from each other, so I always associate them in my mind - you go to visit one, you had to visit the other.

For what it's worth, Lucy was religious too. Republican even. Please don't read into what I wrote to have anything to do with any feelings about any religion. Just wanted to highlight that she immediately made Michele part of the family, despite having to go through decades of not being accepted into the same family.

    My bad, I assumed incorrectly...

Regardless of her faith, aunt Lucy sounded like a wonderful human being!

    Yeah, that's goddamn devastating.
Even though he was 89, I somehow had the idea that he'd outlive us all in the same way he out-wrote us all.
