    Annus horribilis

    Roughly in order ...

    1. My mum tried to help a dog, tripped in long grass, broke her hip and shoulder. In hospital she got a serious secondary infection that escalated to the point of "last resort" antibiotics. She's ok, and due for a brand new hip in January '24
    2. Right before he started school, my nephew broke his arm. He's been known as the broken-arm kid ever since
    3. My dad's regular doctor ordered a precautionary heart thing while he was a bit sick, and based on a flippant joke my dad made the hospital doctor decided for himself that he was too old to drive, referred him to a geriatrician and cancelled his license. Dad bought and learnt new skills to drive a Tesla last year ...
    4. My hernia became un-ignorable, turned into cancer ... you guys know that story already. I'm going under general for the fifth time this year on Monday
    5. While I was in hospital - on one of the worst nights of pain - my idiot dog ate a $3,000 sock and put himself into emergency (perhaps in sympathy)
    6. A week after hospital we found out the NDIS (national disability something something) want to pull my son's funding. He suffers from a suspected but undiagnosed genetic disorder that affects him across the board. He's not profoundly disabled, but he's kicking into the wind. However, because there's no specific label for what he has the bureaucracy says we're going to have to start paying for his speech therapy, physio, occupational therapy, ENTs, craniofacial specialists, audiologists and social facilitators
    7. My sister ended up in hospital with pneumonia. She has a condition that means she struggles to recover from sickness, and after a spell of sickness she eventually deteriorated to the point she had to go to emergency
    8. My eldest also had a trip to emergency after bleeding out his bum. That seems to have resolved, but "bloodbum" is a word in our house now
    9. A couple of weeks ago my mum and dad finally wound up with Covid. Dad now has long covid

Worst of all, two days ago my father-in-law had a massive stroke. He'd picked up a mosquito-borne disease a bit over a week ago that really knocked him about, and he was getting better but suddenly deteriorated. They took him to the district hospital (they live on the southern coast), then transferred him to a city hospital. While there he had the stroke, so they rushed him to the big hospital for surgery to remove the clot from his brain. That was not successful, and due to multiple other infections they can't treat it as they'd like to. He's paralysed on the left and can only speak using hand signals and a few different-sounding grunts. The doctors don't think he'll regain much of the function he's lost which means he'll need lifelong care. The guy had spent his whole life with a chip on his shoulder, being an arsehole and thinking the world owed him a favour (in no small part due to suffering chronic back pain from a work injury in his early 20s), but with the arrival of his grandkids seven years ago he finally softened up a bit and started enjoying life. He even got into Zwift (online/virtual cycling) recently and is in pretty good physical condition as a result. He's just bought a sweet car and was due to retire from work early next year. He is 60.

There's still a month to go.

    Best wishes as always, Mate.

I get feeling down sometimes, but everything is relative. Thanks for giving us some perspective.

Tough year for you, mate. Take comfort in the fact that bad times don't last. Keep your chin up, 2024 will be better!

Yeah 2023 has been the worst year for our family as well. Won’t bother with the list but it’s similarly awful and heartbreaking.
