(The ambiguity here is intentional.)
Welcome to SLM's haus of rare and exotic pieces of glass.
Nearly $6000 worth of lenses between these two.
(Yes, I know it's not about the camera it's about the photo, blah blah, I love my lenses.)

So Nikon has finally fucked their users with AF-P. Should I stick with my D7000, upgrade to something in the Nikon range which takes the new AF-P lenses, or just say fuck it, and go Canon full-frame or Sony?
For much of my casual photography, I just use my Fuji X100T, but I do like having a camera where I can swap lenses to get pictures I can't get with the Fuji (like that dragonfly photo I put on Facebook a few weeks ago).
What about AF-P fucks Nikon owners? I haven't been following closely.
Looking around, it seems like only newer cameras work with the new lenses.
Ugh, eff that. What I like about Canon is an EF lens is an EF lens. Aside from the lenses that aren't made for full frame, any lens fits any camera.
People say Nikon and Canon are equivalent, but honestly Nikon is still limping along this lens mount that's a relic of the 50s, whereas Canon bit the bullet in the 80s, scrapped the old design, and made a modern lens mount designed for autofocus and wide apertures.
Eventually you reach the limit of what you can accomplish, and improvement requires leaving older tech behind. Like you said, Canon made a big leap in the 80s, in this case Nikon isn't even making that huge of a change, there's a decent lineup of supported cameras, especially after firmware updates.
Cameras stretching back to 2012, that's pretty decent support for introducing a new tech.Fully compatible models: D7500, D5600, D3400, D500.
Fully compatible models (without limitations) after available firmware update: D5, D750, D610, D600, D5500, D5300, D3300.
Heh. So my D500 is fully compatible with limitations? What does that even mean? IS is just because it's still DX? It's newer than the D750.
Hmm "The problem is that the new AF-P autofocus motor system only works on camera models originally introduced since about 2013. If your camera is too old, the focus system, even in manual mode, won't work at all, making the lens completely useless with no workaround."
Not even in manual mode? That seems odd if it's still the same mount. If it fit on two cameras with the same mount, it should be able to at least work manually on the old one.
