Sifu JoeW, I was explaining your experience with mirrorless to someone I met who shoots ice hockey for his kids with a 5D2 (centre AF point only) and a 70-200/4. He already gets great shots which he showed me. Do you think an R6 would materially improve his photography experience? Is there a way to demonstrate it? He is open to the idea but I understand where he is coming from. I suspect with ice hockey the returns may be smaller, even when compared to 5D2, as movements are more predictable than say football, and he arenas are well-lit. Of course higher fps and the ability to shoot video without shutter blackout are major advantages, hint I think we are looking at it more from an AF-quality/keeper rate point of view.

Body rentals are possible via Canon HK but I suspect they may not have enough to meet demand. Especially on the weekends.

I did shoot some football 9euro football not USA) at night using my gear. It was tough. Maybe 20%ish keepers and 10% for those on the other side of the pitch. It didn’t help that I didn’t really know the game or the team’s set pieces. But I rarely do that and it’s not for my own enjoyment but rather to help out, so I don’t think it justifies me buying an R6 yet!

Having owned a 5D2 and 5D3 in the past, what he is going to get are significantly cleaner images at high ISO (this camera shoots very usable images at ISO 10000) and a nearly 100% hit rate. The AF is that good. And by switching to ES (electronic shutter) mode you can shoot bursts of 20fps or 30fps. I prefer 20fps for most activities simply so I don’t end up with too many images to go through on the computer afterwards. But with 30fps you are guaranteed to get the exact moment you are looking for

Mechanic shutter is still very good fps at 12 or so. Still almost double the 5D2.

I would say the biggest transition hurdle is the actual viewfinder. Since the viewfinder is basically a tiny computer screen there is a tiny bit of adjustment period. Minute lag time between what is happening and what you see during high fps shooting. But if you know the sport it’s an easy transition. It’s hard to explain, so borrowing one is a good idea.

The transition period is not immediate like going from a 5D2 to 1DX3. The viewfinder being a screen is really the biggest hurdle. But once you get the hang of it you won’t go back

But I’m serious about the keeper rate. I used to get home, upload to the computer and end up deleting maybe 10-15% depending on the sport. Now I might delete 10 out of a thousand. It’s crazy.

In the end, a sharp photo from a 5D2 sensor will look just as good as one from any mirrorless. But it’s the high iso, far superior af system, keeper rate and higher fps that puts the R6 on another level.

But switching systems can be costly too. Not sure how many EF lenses he has but I have found that RF lenses are just plain sharper. If he can afford it then just get RF lenses. If not then the EF-RF adapter works. But it just adds a step everytime you get the camera set up. And as sharp as the EF L lenses are…the RF ones are even better.

Man, that new RF 100-300 2.8L IS is insane.

That said, I rented the Sigma 120-300 OS 2.8 in 2014 or so and that was also cool. And cheaper though only EF mount then and discontinued.

Yeah me want. But I can’t afford $10k lol. That’s worth more than any of the three cars we own.

Agree, only worth it if you are a Pro in which case work buys and pays for it. I didn't even ever think about buying that 300/2.8 IS or the Sigma even though both were and are awesome.

I decided to pull the trigger on a second big RGBWW light after really getting enchanted by the possibility of two equally powerful and flexible lights. With a ring light and a little handheld as well, I should be able to do some pretty cool portraits. Still working on getting the light on the subject right, I might turn the background lights down just a bit so that I can bump the sensitivity up a little more.

It took a lot of finagling, and some post processing, but I am pretty happy with the results in the first use. The low ceilings and small space limited the angles we could do, the Infinity Room has spoiled me.
