Windows had to skip it because of concerns over issues with Legacy software recognizing Windows 9 as Windows 95 or 98.
Apple did it because they copy their competitors lock step and call it innovation.

Sorry... I didn't realize it was that obscure. I thought it had some technical reasons why they skipped nine, but I thought there was more to it.

For that matter the Playstation 3 should have it's own yurt.
People are going to be surprised when the iPhone 8 is succeeded by the 9, and the X (which is not 10) continues on it's own separate upmarket line.
