Today I honour a true hero, not only in racing but also in the real world: Robert Benoist, born #OnThisDay 125 years ago. In #WW1 he was a fighter pilot, in #WW2 a leading member of the French Resistance before being captured by the Gestapo. (1/4)
While being transported for interrogation by Gestapo officers, Robert Benoist leapt from their car & escaped to England. He returned to France but was recaptured & this time sent to Buchenwald, an infamous concentration camp (pic), where he was executed 3 months later. (2/4)
Why does this concern us race fans? Because, between the wars, Robert Benoist had been a fine racing driver, achieving great success at the wheel of Delages, Bugattis & Alfa Romeos. Pic: in a Delage before the '26 San Sebastián GP; he DNF'd after 7 hours 26 minutes. (3/4)
#AnorakFact: Robert Benoist won the '25 #FrenchGP at Montlhéry, a race in which Antonio Ascari (pic), father of the legendary Alberto Ascari, crashed & sustained fatal injuries while leading; he died on his way to hospital; little Alberto was just 7 months old. #RIP x 3. (4/4)

My hero! Ayrton Senna would have been 60 today.
Cheers, the champagne is yours today.
I will never forget my Formule Opel Lotus race that weekend in Imola.. your last race on the 1st May 1994.
