I really like Melbourne and Christchurch when I visited those places a while back. (More so than Sidney and Auckland) It felt right at home as if I'm in Southern California but with nicer and more laid back folks... I guess they are also very similar when it comes to earthquakes too! Hope these place beef up their building codes so that historical structures won't all disappear...

The 5.9 in Victoria is the biggest since European settlement - so they are rare and not very big.
We didn't feel it here, although felt even further away than us.

NZ is a different story - its an active plate edge, so earthquakes, volcanic activity, decent mountains!

There was a significant earthquake here last night. It woke me up and things were shaking. It is the first one I’ve felt since living in South Carolina.

According to my app, it registered as a 3.3. If you were still a Southern Californian, that should not have woken you up.

Guess it all depends on how deep and how close it is, but your So Cal days must feel a little far away now

Today we only do a drill, not a real earthquake.
