So winter weather is refusing to show up... though that'll likely change soon.
anyhow, thoughts getting processed right now. first ride should be used but newish or used and old? posted up the two i'm liking on Fb but basically a 2005 sv650 compared to a 1978 Cb550. both are from a place that used to be a honda dealer though now they are parts and used stuff only. Prices are only 600 or so difference.
Or there's another dealer with a 2013 cb500x that is NOS and only about $1300 more(which is doable pricewise).

Go with the SV650. It's newer and that means better chassis and brakes and all the good things that go with it.
Plus it's not new-new, so you don't have to be obliged to look after it too much.

So, called broker/ 401K people, initiated loan, check coming in about 5 days, called Honda dealer, confirmed the bike I want (red, white and black Honda Africa Twin with DCT) and um, that's about it. Just to wait for the thing.
Need to go to DMV and get that whole motorcycle endorsement sorted...

I'll be interested to see how that DCT is. Have you ridden one yet?

Only the journalists and Europeans have ridden them. Actually, the Kiwis have demo bikes as well.
So, no haven't ridden one, or, for that fact, any bike with a DCT.
It's just a regular manual gearbox that can do the shifting for you. I had to remind a coworker of mine that today, except we were talking about the Porsche PDK. He wants to buy one.

Doesn't the VFR1200 have a DCT?
It sounds like it's a good thing for smooth and almost seamless gear changes but the rest of it seems like too much nannying for me, which in my opinion is sort of missing the point of riding motorcycles in the first place.

I was thinking it's an interesting choice for an adventure bike, but would be great on a tourer. It doesn't have a manual clutch for start/stop, right, like DCT cars?
I bet though that those that use them offroad a lot will still opt for the manual. Not saying it can't do it, but people will be hesitant to trust it.

And here I am thinking about getting a quick shifter for my bike.

Quick shifters are the shizz. Awesome fun wide-open full throttle bang-bang up the gearbox. I've ridden one bike equipped with one and I think I've still got a boner from it. DCTs are different.
I agree they're perfect on a larger tourer (the VFR1200 is probably the best non-BMW touring bike available, even after so long in the market) but I'm just skeptical about a 'box that can do full auto for you being as fun as a manual 'box when you want it to act that way.
