about to embark on Windows 8 adventure ... sigh

    New laptop.

Has some flavour of Win8 on it.

This should be interesting. Wish me luck.

yeah, she is a wiiiiiiide screen

Purchased because stupid cheap for the specs

    Will see how it goes.

But it's cheap enough that it isn't the end of the world if I hate it, and I need to get a new PC as this laptop is four years old and is starting to suddenly do lock ups whilst swapping files from drive to drive. [nervous]

Windows 8 got a bad rap IMHO. There are some things it isn't great at, things that 7 could do much better. But it does have some really neat aspects, there are things it does very well and wholly better than 7. I can see how it *could* be annoying for some applications - I can't rightly say I'd upgrade my desktop with dual 2048x1536 displays to it - but I think it feels very good on a laptop or a "casual use" PC - I've deployed a few Win8 AIO machines and IMHO they work brilliantly. I'm actually regretting not activating my free Win8 Pro upgrade on my laptop - I think it'd have been super.

I agree with TSG. It's good for a casual use PC (like the laptop Im on right now). But I'm keeping my desktop on 7. I would say a big factor is does your laptop (or display) have touch? If yes, go for it. If not, I'm not sure it's worth it.

Touch and 8.1 is a great combo.

my biggest issues with Win 8 so far have been you can't hibernate anymore and i had some odd issue with the popout on the right side of the screen when using chrome.(it wouldnt let me click ANY buttons on that side of Chrome even when smaller than the screen)

Also i wish i had just the standard windows start menu desktop back.

You can still hibernate, but I think you have to go through the power options to turn it on in the power menu.
