*opens door to the Mustang party room*
Just want to say the current and previous generation Mustangs are really fun cars to drive at the limit. Like, one would not expect them to be as good as they are ( Laguna Seca and GT350 versions aside). The last stick axle car was a hoot to drive, very well balanced I thought, and the IRS car doesn't ruin that fun factor.
Part of it is the motor for sure, but the cars actually turn and stop well now too. There's a "total package" vibe to them. Kind of like when the C5 Z06 came out and suddenly the Corvette had the handling and brakes to match its power.
Might have to get one someday when they get cheaper.

Idunno, the 350Z still seems like a better performance bargain for the moment. As the "total package" Mustangs get older and cheaper, they will probably surpass that.

Mustangs gonna Mustang, and that includes depreciation.
There are *real* good odds that the 2013-2017 5.0L Mustang value is gonna tank, *especially* as the platform both gets better (S650 is coming) AND the better models available now and in the future (Shelbys, Mach 1s & Bullitts).

In what way? Seems like used S197 vs. 350Z is about the same money, and S197.2 and 370Z is about the same money. Are you saying the Mustang needs help to be as good as a stock Z?

I did a brief look around and the few Mustangs I found that I knew would be the right kind of fun for me were all $15k+ cars. I admit to not knowing the specs on all the body styles and packages well.
Basic 2003-2006 350Zs are $6-8k all day long. '07-08 are more, and the 370Z is more again, but you get 95% of the performance from a 2003 350Z as you get from a 2016 370Z. Ergo, vis a vis, value leader.

I don't know what your kind of fun Mustang would look like, so I guess I don't know how to differentiate its $15k ask versus all the $7k ask GT manuals on CL... so, IDK.

It starts with a Coyote motor. I think that's enough. Suspension/brake packages might vary a bit with special editions but I think not hugely. Again I'm not real familiar, and I have the impression from afar that the standard GT suspension is pretty reasonable the last couple generations.
Most of the sub-$10k stuff I see are salvage or 4.6 cars.
