you know what I hate?

Car alarms that beep the horn when someone sets it....no light ding like most cars, but BEEP! Twice today I've walked by a car in a parking lot and heard BEEP! because someone was walking away and just hit the button to lock the doors/activate the alarm/whatever.

I think this is mostly an american car thing, but someone can tell me if I'm wrong.

A gentle beep is okay. Ours beeps to prevent the passengers from escaping. Nothing worse than escaped passengers. And then if I catch it, it's almost worse, because it sounds one and a bit loud BEEP, and isn't obviously a runaway false alarm.

I like the way Subaru (and probably others that have the same supplier for the parts) does it.

First time you hit lock, it does the ding sound. Second time it does the ding (and turns off the lights, which normally stay on for a bit after locking if on). Third time beeps. Great to for loud areas when you can't see you car, and can't remember if you locked it. Can also be used when looking for your car in a parking garage or something (though seriously, I've never not known exactly where my car is. What is that?)

New ones you can even customize some of these things (ie, ding, blinkers, or both for locks).

I think the American thing is right. I know GM still does it. They even beep the horn quickly a few times when you close the door on a running car with keyless start. Not sure if Ford hasn't moved on to a chime. No idea about Chrysler, but I'm guessing they've moved on.

Nup, they do it over here in NZ too. Think i've seen Camry's, Falcons and other Japanese etc cars do it.

It is annoying a bit.

My TSX will just flash the parking lights with one button push, but if you push it again, it emits the faintest beep that is hard to hear if you're any distance away from the car. Not very useful for someone who is constantly wondering if they locked the car. The CR-V is just the opposite, one button push does the parking lights but the second button push gives you a short, full-volume horn blast which is like an ice pick to the ear. My old Silverado had it right - it sounded like a 1/4-power horn peep, loud enough to hear but not so loud that it needled your brain.

All those beeps and honks and train whistle blasts are an ice pick to my ear.

Remote controls to lock car doors arrived at about the same time I realized I was a retro-grouch. I have no patience with unnecessary frivolities like remote controls that perform duplicate functions, and especially at additional cost.

People, you have to use your hand to open your car door, right?

(please don't tell me self-opening doors are now another "new normal" that I haven't even heard of yet)

After you open your door with your hand, use that very same hand to push down on the door lock button, or on the button that locks all doors at once if your car is that new and fancy. Close the door and walk away.

It's really easy. Try it and see!

When you return, just put the key in the lock on the door (that you have to touch with your hand anyway) and turn it. The door will unlock and you can open it and already have the key in hand for easy insertion in to the ignition for a fast getaway.

Bonus: no huge remote control to jam into the front pocket of your trousers and annoy you all day long, unless you enjoy having a suspicious bulge in that area.

Signed,

One of the last holdouts against remote control horn-honker devices, apparently

Door poppers are pretty pimp, especially for a car from yesterday’s future like the DeLorean.

But I’m waiting patiently for the day when your Lamborghini pops up from out of nowhere and folds into shape around you when you go to sit down, like in Iron Man when Tony Stark summons his suit. That would be the ultimate.

I’ve never owned a car where that works.
Close the door and it will unlock the drivers door. You need to hold the handle up while closing the door for it to stay locked.
This is mean to stop you accidentally locking yourself out.

Our family car from the 70s was the last car I remember that you could just shut the door and it stayed locked. I’m pretty sure my first car didn’t (a 1987 Nissan). Definitely my 1990 Nissan had this feature.

Things are fuzzy now, but it might have been the cars with power door locks you didn't have to hold up the handle, and the cars with manual locks you had to hold the handle up.

The GameCube Wavebird was awesome. Sony's good wireless controllers were later.

You probably know better than I. I just remember a wireless controller or two from, I think, the SNES era, which basically didn't work or had huge input delays.

Japanese cars in the 70s and 80s did this in the US - you had to hold the handle up for it to stay locked. They did away with it in cars they sent to the US starting in the late 80s/early 90s, I think. My 80s Mazdas had this feature but later ones didn't.

Dicknose
August 1st, 2018, 05:36 PM
That explains it... I thought it was ubiquitous since the early 80s!
Does make it harder to lock your keys in. But not impossible - with a wagon/hatchback the easiest accident was opening the hatch, hitting the lock then throwing keys in a bag in the back, then deciding you don’t want to get the bag out, slam hatch. How do I know that!?

These days they tend to get smart enough that unlock will also lock! Hit unlock, don’t open a door and 30s later it locks. Does mean you can hit either button in a car park and not have to worry did I hit the right button.
The Boxster has an option for unlock to do both doors or just driver door (2nd push for passenger). This is set in the car options in the computer (yeah most new cars have a computer with touch screen interface - scary)

Just rolled by an accident scene. What was once a Hurracan (or Gallardo) is now a part of a bunch of palm trees. Looked pretty banged up, but these type of cars often look worse than normal cars, because the fron and rear ends are designed to break away more. Hard to tell how the passenger compartment was because of all the palm fronds. One tree was down in the opposite lanes, the car was sandwiched into a bunch of 3-4 others. If they lost it a few yards before or after, they probably would have just slammed the median and crossed over to the other direction's lanes. Maybe better maybe worse.

The "hold the handle up for it to stay locked" was also in all cars sold in Italy since I was a kid. Old Fiat 128, Panda, Ford Fiesta, Renault Super 5 and so on we had in the family all had this.

My wife walks towards her door (which has no keyhole, BTW) of our 2016 Subaru while I'm seated in it.

I press the "unlock button" on my arm rest console to unlock all the doors. My wife opens her door, and the alarm goes off.
To prevent that, I actually need to lean over and briefly open the door from the inside.

I think they must have consulted with professional car thieves when designing these alarm systems. And the car thieves helped design a system which causes so many false alarms that no-one will ever pay attention to car alarms anymore.

Yes, you need to use the buttons on the key fob to unlock the door on entry. Or sit down with the manual and figure out how to put the car into (parking) valet mode. I'm not sure what the other ramifications of valet mode are.

1,350 kg (2,980 lb) (dry)
1,697 kg (3,741 lb) (wet)

347kg of fluids? is that possible? does it have a 200L fuel tank?

I almost bought a Fiat 124 Spider Abarth. No news to anyone, Fiat isn't selling too hot and they have some inventory left at the lots. There was an 2017 Abarth 124 for 25k Canadian (Google says that's $18,921 USD). It's new and sitting on the lot. I would trade in my 500 Turbo for it.

I've only driven 2 RWD cars in real life. One is a Genesis Coupe which felt clumsy and another was a Jeep Wrangler. This car is so much fun. I get why people love Miata's. I didn't mind the turbo lag and it sounds pretty mean. However, I didn't like how it was an automatic (they only had autos left).

I dropped a deposit down last night and when I woke up I felt like it wasn't right. I don't think I can deal with an impractical car at my current stage of life. I just pulled my deposit but I feel pretty poopy because I really liked that car.

That's a crazy good price DSM. Would a manual have made you feel any different? I haven't driven the Fiat version but the ND Miata is pretty darn good. RWD is the bestest really. What felt clumsy about the Gen Coupe? I autocrossed one years ago with mild prep (sway bar, shocks, alignment, good tires) and it was definitely fun. They're a surprisingly big car despite looking like a normal sports coupe.

DelSolMan
November 9th, 2018, 10:54 PM
Cuda: Manual would make me happier but it wasn't a deal breaker. I took the Gen Coupe on a test drive many years ago. I think it's like when people recommend a movie like it's the greatest movie ever and you finally get to watch it, it gets hard to live up to expectations. I thought RWD would be epic but on city streets I didn't really push it. It didn't help that I had a few people in the car and the car generally felt heavy.

I really like the ND chassis. It was surprisingly comfortable, I liked being closer to the ground and the size of the car felt 'right'.

Wonder why the Italians don't care about protecting rims.

Anyway, I can spot the differences, but I wonder if they really make that much of a difference on the track... do they really need to 'optimize' the same size tires for each car (Each car lap fastest in their own tires) or perhaps there's just a particular design that's superior and would end up allowing all cars to lap fastest...

That'd be a more fascinating find.

Some people define sports car as having to be a small British 2-seat convertible only. While I think the definition is more open than that, and the track-oriented Mustangs and Camaros are very fast and capable around a mountain road, track, or autox these days, I don't know if I'd quite call them a sports car. Perhaps I'll relate to the recent model Mustang owner I might be seeing over beer soon that that's the opinion of a professional competition driver.
I did relate that to the Mustang owner in question, briefly desribing the Gran Turismo reality series, etc. And the owner agreed with the idea that it wasn't a sports car.

He actually suggested it was a Muscle Car, but the original Mustangs were in their own class of their own creation when they appeared on the scene. ("Pony Car" as CudaMan said). I think most of the modern retro versions are designed with more substance than the mostly stylistic early Pony Cars.

This particular friend actually had bought a Mustang II as his first car.

Hmm. I guess calling them "Trans Ams" doen't really apply anymore. Or Google suggests, maybe it could. (TA4)

That Mini picture is surprising. I know perspective is making it a bit deceptive, but I'm surprised how much closer in size the original and modern standard Mini are to each other than I thought.

I hate these new BMW grills, but to be fair, they're still among the smallest out there. Look at Audi, Chrysler, Lexus, etc.

Saw a big truck like that at one of our McDonalds the other day.

I'll put it this way, our parks weren't made for big long American trucks. Looked very strange.
