That was my plan for an autocross setup. Get a truck with a large bed, and a classic Mini that fits in the back, then drive it to autocross events.

The thing that confuses me about that pic is that a work truck that long should fir the Smart in the bed entirely, instead there's and extra set of doors

Yeah, it's a short bed pickup. You probably could get long bed plus 4 doors, but the owner couldn't afford it. Or maybe the option wasn't available. Possibly hadn't originally planned to carry the car that way.

That's not a work truck. That is a penis extension and the Smart Car is the Prince Albert.

The pile of stuff around the car are the radar detectors, laser jammers & dash cams he removed from the car. The speculation is that he's getting a new car.

Jim Richards car. As a 4 year old in NZ dad would walk us to the garage at the end of the street where he used to build his racecars then out to the track to watch him on weekends. After we moved to Australia he'd then take us out to watch a kiwi killing everyone in the Australian driving chanpionship driving that BMW. Made a pretty big impact on a 14/15 year old seeing another kiwi beating the Australians on their turf. Then the Australian grand prix started so automatically I was drawn to the F1 car in the JPS livery that was was having the wheels driven off it by the bloke with the yellow helmet. Fwiw after that Jim Richards moved on to Nissan and was the first driver to start winning in the R32 GTR.

But basically my whole love of motorsport and driving starts with that 635CSI. Just a beautiful racecar.

Jim was a great driver - still is, he does the occasional event!
2nd in Bathurst 1000 wins (and his son has 5 - they shared a podium a few times)
Won with the GTR and gave the infamous "pack of arseholes" line.

But that was a great car and great livery.

Oh and "TAA" - an airline that is no more (got merged with QANTAS). Had a cousin who worked for them and she featured in some of the tv ads.

Spent the whole ride going "dont lane split".
Also adjusted my mirrors so they looked at the overhang so every glance reminded me Im wide. Still nowhere near as wide as a car, but about a foot wider each side than my mirrors (the normal wide point)

1/2 Last year I decided to start a project that I hadn’t seen done... to draw an F1 car in pretty much life size scale all in coloured pencil.... I planned on finishing it last year within a couple of months. It things and life happens and I finished it last weekend... (https://twitter.com/Julietmarshy/status/1127528912655998976/photo/1)

2/2 I’m really happy that I didn’t give up and managed to get it done, a piece that I’m proud of and that doesn’t often happen 😄 so it took, * Approx 20 pencils * 4 markers * 3 weeks work time over a year * 1 large charcoal block * blood, sweat, tears * and all of my patience (https://twitter.com/Julietmarshy/status/1127529377951043584/photo/1)

So I need to buy a new car, basically. Water pump and coolant lines going into the engine need replacement. 2002 VW Passat 1.8 front wheel drive, so getting at the stuff is impossible. 2k in parts and labor total. Gonna look at a 2001 Lexus LS430 tommrow. 174k miles, asking 3299. What do ya'll think? Car does have a VSC and CEL on, but my dad has a code puller, so we're gonna find out what the CEL acaully is, which could be caused by the VSC.

Amazing how one can recognize it clearly without ever really having been there. (Confirming later with the well-known landmarks).
I liked the minivans somewhat early on.

Though the most amazing thing was the black sedan which suddenly seemed to appear from nowhere behind. And then seemed to remain in sight as a rabbit. At places the action looked downright dangerous. The drivers must be well-schooled in protocol.

Yeah we get some good hail here in Sydney but never snow. Best hail is in summer!
Had a huge hailstorm a few years ago and the roads where green and white - the green was all the leaves stripped off trees.
Cracked concrete roof tiles (we dont use slate!) and it was about a 1 year backlog of repairs for roofs and cars.

But damn that is pretty impressive coverage of hail!

Actually this thing is insane, All-wheel drive, 980 something HP....can go I think 30 miles on full electric power. The only thing I'm not sure of, is the steering wheel has touch screen controls....really don't think that is a good idea.

It's interesting. The Japanese brands seemingly made less of an impact in the 70's and 80's than I would have expected from the narrative we hear about (oil crisis, cheaper, more fuel efficient and reliable cars going way up in sales)

Toyota and Nissan did jump up pretty considerably in about 1970 and again in 1980. Maybe not a considerable impact to the big 3, but they about doubled in each of those years. Honda was a bit of a late-comer though and made a huge jump in 1980.

It's kinda interesting that they don't account for the merger of Daimler and Chrysler.

Actually getting in the convertible is easy if the roof is down, but out is still hard.

Oh and a few years ago at the F1 in Melbourne they had Mark Webber driver a 918 around. Took a journo for a lap and when the guy went to get out he grabbed the frameless window to help himself up - broke the window mechanism. Glass didnt break, but the window got pushed down and out of position and they couldnt close the door. And this happened on the main straight in front of a few thousand fans (not sure if it was tv as well)

People who try to "rotate" their vehicle rather than crab it sidewards and then wonder why its getting tighter.
Once on my commute I was stuck in real bad traffic - like didnt move for 15 mins. In that time I watched a lady try to park. Back, forwards, turn left, turn right... at the end of the time she was still going and I still wasnt sure if she was trying to get in or out of the spot!

Heh, they are cute. I'm guessing they are a variation on the Legend racing cars here in the US. And reading the wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legends_car_racing), that appears to be the case.

"Phil Ward, a former touring car racer, recognized the potential for this type of economical racer, and developed the Aussie racing car, with a focus on road racing. The Aussie racing cars retain the same Yamaha motorcycle engines. The classic legends style bodyshape of old Fords and early Holdens have been gradually supplanted by imitations of modern road cars for commercial purposes."

The Zonda driver may be a little slow but it looks like he/she is taking the corner in the correct manner. He/She is out wide and then is cutting across the apex and is setting himself/herself up for the next corner. The Porsche driver looks like he/she completely miss judged his/her braking point and decided to just stick it in there, where as if he/she was on the correct line then they could have gone straight ahead and used the access road for runoff.

(Ed. Note: Our man in the Las Vegas CC Field Office made his way into the SEMA show that started today and put together a massive photo display below for this special edition outside of the normal posting schedule. Enjoy the offerings, there’s likely something for everyone!)

I may not have been able to get Media credentials at SEMA, but a contractor badge accomplishes much the same thing. Following is a large media dump from my camera. I don’t have any real details on any of these, but I “edited” my photo taking to include only the sorts of cars that I deemed CC-worthy. Enjoy!

So, (M4 concept aside) I hear all this talk and see memes and such about the new BMW grills. And yes, they do deviate from the old cars, but so do all cars these days. I've seen the X7 and new 7 series in person plenty. They are big for Kidney grills, but they are still smaller than most of their competition. Audi, Lexus, Genesis, Rolls, Bentley, Lincoln, Ford, all bigger. Maybe only Mercedes, Volvo and Land Rover can say they are the same or smaller. They just look odd compared to older BMW's. I'd say they really don't look bad in person.

Fair point on comparison with the older BMWs. Go back to the famous 328 of the 20s and you'll see a really tall set of kidney grilles.

I've been meaning to buy one (or two) dashcams since I first started seeing those Russian dashcam videos online. Thought I'd get one when I got a newer car, but just like everything else, they're expensive. I'd like one pointing out the rear window also, with as many people as I see blatantly staring at their smart phones while driving these days. People don't even try to hide it anymore! When I look in my rearview mirror and see eyelids instead of eyes in stop-and-go traffic, I get scared (and angry).

Up-front dashcam expense is totally worth the fuss for if someone rear-ends you or does something really stupid that causes you major difficulties.

I've been hesitant to get a dash cam. If you're involved in an incident and feel that the video may be unflattering to you, you are not allowed to erase it. If you do, and someone sues you based on the incident and it's known you deleted the video, the judge will instruct the jury to assume whatever was on the video was a detriment to you and favorable to your opposing party. You could swear under oath that you didn't record video, but perjury has its own consequences.

It's a double edged sword. I haven't caused a multi-car accident since 1999 but who knows what may come.

George

I was actually thinking about dashcams this morning as I drove into work instead of taking the train. Light, Christmas-week traffic is a nice change from the usual bumper-to-bumper grind at 5 - 10 mph the whole way. Nothing happened that made me wish for one, but while sitting still, I noticed a little ledge under my rear window and thought I could put some velcro there for a rear-facing camera.

Image from google below. My interior is dark grey so I think a strip of velcro and the camera itself might be a little less noticeable than in this picture with the tan interior.

http://direct.automobiles.honda.com/images/2014/ridgeline/exterior-gallery/2014-honda-ridgeline-exterior-sliding-rear-window.jpg

And just being silly for a minute, maybe I should get my rear window tinted darker than factory tint and then when someone is tailgating me or otherwise driving like a jerk, I could slide open the rear window to reveal the camera and maybe a colorful sign saying "Smile! You're on camera!" :assclown:

If you're involved in an incident and feel that the video may be unflattering to you, you are not allowed to erase it. If you do, and someone sues you based on the incident and it's known you deleted the video, the judge will instruct the jury to assume whatever was on the video was a detriment to you and favorable to your opposing party. Would this be based on someone seeing the dashcam in your car at the scene of the accident?

If so, this is surprising to me. Your video is your video to do with as you please, isn't it? It's not theirs.

Related to this, I think: Can police and others (attorneys involved in a case, for example) get court orders to confiscate videos such as from home doorbell cameras and business security cameras? It seems to me laws (in the USA) would be similar for all privately-owned cameras, but I haven't tried to learn about this yet.

Or is it more like what dodint describes above?

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, both the defendant and the police officer at the scene of the accident report seeing a dashcam in the plaintiff's vehicle, but he refuses to share the footage. I'm sure you can draw your own conclusions from this."

This is in the civil context, self-incrimination considerations in the criminal context may have different outcomes. As a party to a lawsuit you're subject to discovery in accordance with the rules of evidence for that jurisdiction. The easiest way to know to request dash cam video is to simply see the dash cam at the scene and make a note to request the video during pre-trial discovery. Another way would be to ask the opposing party during discovery, using interrogatories (written questions to an opposing party) or at a deposition. These questions in either case are asked under oath, and the perjury penalties can be harsh; in other contexts it has resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and suspension/disbarment of the advising attorney. See this case here about destroying Facebook posts/pictures that were requested in discovery: https://blog.x1discovery.com/2011/11/15/facebook-spoliation-costs-lawyer-522000-ends-his-legal-career/

In Colorado, specifically, they allow for the adverse inference I mentioned earlier:

Adverse Inference: Colorado recognizes adverse inference as a sanction for intentional destruction of evidence.
The state of mind of the party that destroys the evidence is an important consideration in determining whether
adverse inference is the appropriate sanction. In addition, in order to remedy the evidentiary imbalance created
by the loss or destruction of the evidence, an adverse inference may be appropriate even in the absence of a
showing of bad faith. Id. Special caution must be exercised to ensure that the inference is commensurate with
the information that was reasonably likely to have been contained in the destroyed evidence. Pfantz v. K-Mart
Corp., 85 P.3d 564 (Colo. App. 2003).

Federal Rules of Civil Procedure 37 lists outcomes for failing to disclose:

(c) Failure to Disclose, to Supplement an Earlier Response, or to Admit.

(1) Failure to Disclose or Supplement. If a party fails to provide information or identify a witness as required by Rule 26(a) or (e), the party is not allowed to use that information or witness to supply evidence on a motion, at a hearing, or at a trial, unless the failure was substantially justified or is harmless. In addition to or instead of this sanction, the court, on motion and after giving an opportunity to be heard:

(A) may order payment of the reasonable expenses, including attorney's fees, caused by the failure;

(B) may inform the jury of the party's failure; and

(C) may impose other appropriate sanctions, including any of the orders listed in Rule 37(b)(2)(A)(i)—(vi).

There are rules that balance privacy against disclosure, but the expectation of privacy with a dash cam is pretty low and I wouldn't expect a judge to rule the dash cam is private.

As for the home camera stuff, a doorbell is generally facing outward given that is the entire purpose of them. Like the dash cam it would be unlikely they would be protected by a concern for privacy and would be discoverable in civil litigation, and the party that owned the door bell camera would have a duty to preserve that evidence.

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice, generally directed or specific to your situation.

Thanks! Very interesting. I had not considered any of this yet. Pros and cons, like anything else, I guess.

Maybe it's time to research stealth-mount dashcams, like the old (and maybe still current) stealth radar detectors people would put behind their grilles instead of on the dashboard, suction-cupped to windshields, or hanging from rearview mirrors.

Mostly I just don't want my "new" car to get damaged. I didn't care about dashcams when I drove an inexpensive older car for many years, but every time I browse Reddit these days, all the dashcam gifs and videos remind me of all the crazy stuff that can and does happen in this age of ever-more distracted driving.

It does occur to me that a dashcam might be helpful in tempering one's own passions behind the wheel as well documenting the misdeeds of others.

If you think a dash cam fits with your lifestyle then by all means go for it. I'll probably break down and install one eventually. I just brought it up as a point of interest.

If everyone had a dash cam the courts would be less packed with personal injury claims as the parties would likely get to settlement a hell of a lot faster. ;)

Also, similarly, every car that competes in an SCCA road race is required to have a camera recording from inside the cockpit. If there is an incident and the steward demands your video and you fail to produce you're most likely going to be at fault. Same principle as above, just lower stakes.

I took a class dedicated specifically to discovery of social media material. It's pretty shocking the difference between what people think is private and what is discoverable. Social media posts, even ones sent to a private group or direct message, are treated the same as a postal letter. Once you send it out into the world it's not considered private anymore because you lack control over the information. Private things need to be safeguarded, and sharing it with someone else voids that expectation of privacy. It's pretty interesting stuff.

Useful info!

I haven't caused any accidents since the motorcycle debacle. However, I have been hit since in the truck, while backing the trailer up on a street. My hazards were on as I was blocking both lanes of traffic and I had been in the spot I was in for over 20 seconds. The offending driver tried to go around my truck and trailer, only to find out there wasn't any room. Speed limit was 35mph.

I've had more idiots pull in front of me with a few feet of my front end and brake checking me than I care to talk about. The last time this happened was leaving TTN towing the Vette home. The group of us were no less than 2 miles from the track. My buddy saw it happen and chirped over the CB asking if I was alright.

Agreed. But a privately-owned dashcam in a privately-owned vehicle should be able to be safeguarded by the private citizen who owns it. It should be allowed to be used by the private owner OR NOT at his sole discretion. If he posts the accident on r/IdiotsInCars, it's now in the public domain. I have no problem with that. But if he quietly pockets the dashcam at the scene and never mentions having it, he should not be compelled to share its contents.

Not disputing the facts as you've presented them nor drag this out into an all-day conversation; just expressing my opinion during a slow day at work.

And I did not miss the sentence below. I'm glad you mentioned that or I'd be much more worked up about this thing I've never even considered before this morning.

This is in the civil context, self-incrimination considerations in the criminal context may have different outcomes.

I wonder if this was a concern in the days of film photography. Probably so. Everything has been done before. Probably some artist painting scenes of life in his medieval village had his canvas confiscated to show something allegedly stolen from a store was there on display in a window on the morning the artist was witnessed painting it.

Come to think of it, that reminds me of a Columbo episode...

I agree with you that privacy is a primary concern. And I alluded earlier that there is a check in place to ensure that the probative value of the evidence would have to substantially outweigh the harm or embarrassment done to the owner of the image. It's FRE Rule 403 which is test that all evidence is subject to when trying to be introduced. Harm, embarrassment, and harassment are all valid reasons to exclude evidence if its value is not great enough to outweigh your concerns.

As for simply pocketing the dash cam and walking away, you're not acting in good faith. The civil justice system is an adversarial system where the two parties need to state their case by using evidence to support the facts they tell the jury. You've generated a recording of the incident in the hopes of using it to defend yourself if you were wronged; to then hide that same recording by lying about its existence is bad faith. I'm not saying that you should run up to the police officer or opposing counsel and jump up and down until they take it off your hands*, but if asked for it you have a duty to surrender that item because it's material evidence in the court action that you are a party to. To be as broad as possible, it's one more bit of autonomy you surrender to enjoy living in a society where we have a peaceful means for dispute resolution.

*There are other considerations about candor to a tribunal, but that area is much more grey than this discovery issue we're talking about.

Not disputing the facts as you've presented them nor drag this out into an all-day conversation; just expressing my opinion during a slow day at work.

I, too, am trying to murder the last of this work day before the holiday and enjoy the discourse. Many people don't know there is a difference between civil and criminal procedure, it's fun to talk about in 'real terms' rather than the stuff out of the book.

It's a Jeep thing. You wouldn't understand. :p

(Am I remembering that slogan that Jeep used for a while correctly? Hope so.)

At least I assume we're talking about his Jeep. I see lots of off-road rigs around here with all kinds of aftermarket antennas on them. I figure guys talk on CBs while on the trails together.

Recently while cleaning up some stuff in the garage, I came upon my late father-in-law's car safety kit from years decades ago. My wife used to carry the kit with her, but for the last several years it has been on a shelf in the garage. It has some of those red triangles to put behind a broken-down car and a first-aid kit and a few other things, including a hand-held CB radio with a cigarette lighter plug. My son and I hooked it up in my car once while on the interstate but I think the antenna is too short to be of much use. We heard just bits of conversations on Channel 19 between lots of static and I got the impression I needed a longer antenna. Heck, I don't even know if truckers use Channel 19 anymore. They did when I was a kid and my father was on the road selling custom vans to car dealers in the southeast in the late 1970s.

For about five minutes, I had an idea to built a home CB station with an antenna on the roof of the house like I remember people having when I was a kid, but like so many of my genius ridiculous ideas, it was quickly forgotten.

We've used dashcams for years now, and i even bought one for Dad. Which turned out to be a good thing, as he got hit on the right front wheel side of the car (almost a t-bone or a head on, give or take a few seconds either way) by a dropkick speeding in a 50km/h zone. Loser was doing 60-70km/h around a slightly curvy street (of this sort of shape --> ````\,,,,,,, ), locked his brakes and ran right into Dad.

Dipshit denied everything (even with a couple of witnesses, including the guy who was following him because he got cut off a few streets earlier - which was why the dunce was speeding) but dashcam footage showed otherwise. He got sentenced etc and ordered to pay Dad compensation, but he claimed hardship so only got ordered to pay at something like $5 a week. Which is BS, if people can't afford to pay compensation in times like this, their cars and possessions should be confiscated and sold in order to get the money. Then people would take it more seriously...

And another time i supplied dashcam footage to the Police so they could use it in court, after i captured part of a reckless road journey by some young guys who eventually crashed the car ten mins or so later. They came speeding past me on the motorway, undercutting everyone.

Other than that, all we have is just footage of bad drivers. Red light runners/late orange light runners, stop sign non stoppers, indication fails/lack of indication, speeding, bad/dangerous driving, crossing centreline/corner cutting, merging fails/lane change fails, tailgating, obstacles on the road, weather events and so on.

Have also had two or three of my clips (on the page below) on national TV right after the 6pm news on a popular channel, as a part of a red light running article they were doing on a current affairs show.

Have gigabytes of footage of them, to go on my page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaByIeEtK_xDEgrhZC28kfg

And you do get what you pay for. The cheaper dash cams are cheap for a reason. Low quality recording (despite saying they are full HD etc), dodgy/wobbly mounts, system errors etc - we've had countless problems with cheap ones. :(
If you can afford it, get a Full HD (or 2k/4k) dashcam with 60fps recording, as with most 30fps ones you can barely read any number plates while moving/when cars are passing you etc.

I own/drive too many cars then buy and sell them way too often to invest in a dash cam :)

That said, I captured this guy on my rally car's go-pro, when I was on the way home from an event.

Note: NZ drives on the left side of the road ... well, NZ, other than this guy anyway.

Yup, that's him on the wrong side of the road for no reason. Also note, at least one of his tyres was down to the belts, as there were sparks coming off one tyre.

Holey crap. Was he corner cutting, or just driving on that side for a while? Maybe it could have been stolen too? Can't understand why it'd be sparking away otherwise.

Some dashcams use suction cups, which can easily and quickly be transferred to another vehicle. ;) We've got five road legal vehicles and a bike, but our two main use vehicles have dash cams. All of them plug into the cigarette lighter slot.

We also had one which came with a 720p rear camera, you just have to make sure the image it records isn't reversed/flipped, as then the footage makes no sense. As we found out.

Leon
December 28th, 2019, 01:40 PM
Massive corner cutting. I've got a series of screen captures of him driving on the wrong side around multiple corners and several straights. Who knows what was going through his head, but his driving was full douchebag enough on the motorway that I had the camera on and ready to go when he exited the highway onto the B road, and captured lots of driving fail until he overtook a car in front and vanished. Funny thing was, he thought he was driving fast, and really wasn't...

Nope, didn't bother reporting it, because most people I've discussed such things with, have reported zero police motivation to do anything unless there has been an accident.
Regardless of the driving offence caught on camera, *unless* the media has jumped on it, and has drummed up hysteria.
