I went for a walk around a big auto-mall today to enjoy the weather, and that started with sitting in a new Supra for the first time ever. The seating position and headroom felt nice, but getting in took some contorting. The way the window opening slopes down more aggressively than the roof, I couldn't get my head in from my normal seated position. I had to rotate towards the front of the car and duck to get in. That was especially disappointing because I had just sat in an 86 where ingress and egress took upper body leverage but were otherwise fine.

Had the misfortune to get a "Gutless" as a long term rental when I was in Chicago. One of the worst cars Ive ever driven. Handled like a boat, would get a low frequency bounce over sections of freeway that could make you sea sick. But at least the brakes and power were just as bad!!!
This was 1989, so not that long after this.
I cant remember that much about the actual car, just that we used to laugh at how bad it was and quickly got to know where the bouncing would happen. With 3 or 4 of us in the car, the passengers would all "ooohhh, aaahhh" as it went up and down.

In the summer of 1985, after my junior year of high school, I got a summer job as a Lot Boy at an Oldsmobile/AMC/Jeep/Renault dealership. It was a large dealership with two separate service departments and multiple showrooms and a body shop in back. While I rarely drove anything off the lot, I put all those cars and more through their paces at low parking lot speeds. I drove 'em all - brand new, used car inventory that had to be washed daily, and customers' cars going in and out of the service department.

Those sports versions with a bunch of stickers and maybe some different wheels made all the difference between what seemed really cool to a young guy like me and what was clearly Your Father's Oldsmobile, to quote a commercial from back then.

Speaking of fathers, I remember my Dad using a Firenza as an example of outlandish extravagance. "Don't blow your money on a Firenza! You need to be planning for the future and investing. Save your money."...and all that stuff.

They are huge engines with forced induction on top. They would argue that it is both forms of making power. The counter argument is that they could have made the engine even bigger. It becomes circular. No one enjoys it.

Trust me, the very first thing I taught him is that you steer where you're looking. I told him about target fixation, told him I crashed my dads car when it hydroplaned because I looked right at a light pole and said "don't go there!!" And of course it did.

Last week we went to a new development that's being build. The streets have been constructed, there's three model homes and that's it. We took his mums car, a Chevy Tahoe. He did alright. Yesterday we took my car. Now, my car is a Euro import 1991 Mercedes 250TD. Diesel. Wagon. 5 speed. The holy grail. Nothing special everywhere in the world, but we never got that model here in the US. Mine may possibly be the only one in the country. Unlikely, but, again, Mercedes never sold that model here.

All he needed to do yesterday was go through the gears, up and down, foot off the clutch completely with each gear change, plan your stops, set yourself up for success, etc etc etc. This lil nigga would not respond when I clearly said "you're going way too fast" as we are approaching a cul de sac where's gong to have to make a 180* turn. Three different times i said that and he. didn't. respond. Three separate times!!!!!

I like my car way too much to watch him ram it into a curb. I said "brake, clutch now. You're still going too fast. STOP!!!!" to make him stop. And he stalled it.

My blood pressure was still high this morning!!!!

I want to buy a few cars but I keep telling myself I need my own house first (I know, the market SUCKS right now). I'm currently a roommate in a house with a 1 car garage and not a lot of room to work on cars, but sometimes I see a great deal and I want to pull the trigger.

I did this before, buying a 91 MR2 not running for $1,000 and spent a lot of time trying to get it working and fit, but the shell, etc. was just too far gone to really make it nice without putting several more grand into it, so I resold it for a profit.

Extra miscellaneous: a friend got a VW ID4 in July. I found out and saw it for the first time Saturday, my favorite part was the glass roof.
