Ferrari's 458 replacement has a 3.8L V8 with twin-turbos making....661bhp and 561lb ft of torque.

I like it, but I want to know what it sounds like.

So, this car makes more power than the Enzo. Since when did the baby Ferraris get so powerful?

Kchrpm
February 3rd, 2015, 12:19 PM
Since Dodge Challengers had 707 hp, Corvettes had 650, Lamborghini has 602, and the GTR is nipping at its heels or beating it at tracks.

The horsepower wars are in a major swing. And the high zoot model makes 900+ hp so they have a very high ceiling to play with.

Gorgeous thing! I'm in love! I was never a fan of the 458, I just found it rather ugly. It just wasn't elegant and graceful as I think a Ferrari should be. This however is stunning! Not that I will ever sit in one, never mind own one. I might see one as there's a Ferrari garage not far from my ex's house but that's as close as I'm likely to get.

I'm sorry but I just thought it was function over form, something a Ferrari should not be. Sure it was FAST, but if you offered me one or an earlier Ferrari I'd take the earlier Ferrari every time.

Non supercar Ferraris (anything other than F40, F50, Enzo, LaFerrari etc) haven't really sounded that great since the late 90's. The 355 was the last good sounding non supercar Ferrari (360 isn't too bad though), but the 430, 458, California and others all sound way too similar. :/

The F458 looks awesome, but the sound doesn't do it justice (and yes, i have seen some in real life - the 355 annihilates them soundwise).

For: Crazed performance, superb response despite switch to turbochargers, chassis balance

Against: Engine feels less exciting than Speciale and GTB only truly comes alive at very high speeds

Seem to me like Ferrari needs a new Dino type. A lighter, less powerful MR to coming under the now stupid fast V8 MR.

That's what the Alfa 4C in the whole FIAT/Chrysler (FCA) conglomerate is for.
They aren't going to put out a car that could compete and cannibalize the sales of the Alfa.

Yes, I know the Alfa is sporting only a turbo 1.750cc engine...

There's a big gap in performance from the 4C to the 488.

The irony is that Ferrari has said the 488 shape comes completely from the aerodynamics team, so it's even more function over form.

There's a big gap in performance from the 4C to the 488.

There was a big gap from the Dino and proper Ferraris, too.
When I was a kid I remember people talking of the Dino as the "poor man's Ferrari", in ashamed fashion.

EDIT: You want form over function? Get a stupid (and I say it as an insult) 80's or 90's Lambo then. This is a proper sportcar, not a tacky Hotwheels toy in giant size.

But 1979 Lambos are still cool, right? :assclown:

I'd take a tacky '80s Countach over a modern computer-optimized car any day of the week. I'd prefer to drive a car built by people who love cars over one built in cyberspace. I realize the cyber car will be better in every measurable way, but the other will have soul. And that's what important to me.

I want something that is comfortable, enjoyable and reliable enough to drive every day, weather permitting. Which probably leaves out almost all supercars.

Enter corvettes.

Truth be told, my experience with the Ferrari f430 has been very reliable even with hard use.

This.
Soul, love of cars... I hope to not sound derespectful but it sounds like carnerds mumbling.
And a Countach is just an exhibition car with overly decent top speed... so, in the real world, with all its uncomfortable seats, cramped interiors and mediocre handling, I've no idea what there is to love there.
Design? Maybe, I find them fugly - from Miura to Gallardo there wasn't a half decent looking Lambo *to me* - but that is totally my tastes, and so it doesn't matter.

Intellectually I completely understand someone not liking the Countach or any of the more modern Lambos, but seriously, this might be the first time I've ever heard anyone say anything negative about the Miura's looks.

The Miura is the best looking Lambo ever. And I really liked Gallardo's design.
I'll rephrase it to be clearer: anything from the Countach (included) to the Murcielago (included) looks like shit *TO ME*.

EDIT: funnily enough the Silhouette and the Jalpa weren't, to me, as bad looking as the Countach. All considered I basically find fugly the most quintessential mainstream Lambos, so basically the three big ones: Countach, Diablo and Murcielago.

That makes a lot more sense. I took the "from the Miura ..." to be inclusive, and was completely boggled. I think it's totally reasonable for anyone to not like any given Lambo (other than the Miura) - They're in general just so ridiculous and out there that I get not liking, them even if I do.

Those are intermediate shaft bearings. Those guys are known to have caused upwards of ~10% of all m96 and similar Porsche engines to fail catastrophically with little to no warning.

Hence why I say buy a vette. I am somewhat speaking from experience.
