A place where I buy stuff recently had one of these installed. It's quick but it doesn't require a PIN, how secure is that?

It uses NFC to transfer the credit card info, and for payments under a certain amount a lot of stores don't require additional verification just for the sake of convenience.

Compared to a signature, that was rarely checked?

Some places here (major supermarkets mostly) will accept a credit card up to about $40 without a pin.
Just swipe and it's done.
So the wave or touch style was not a big change. They tend to have a higher limit, it usually $100

Secure, sort of.
It's not that hard to target and steal IDs if you really want to.
The NFC range is small, they are tuned to be a few millimeters. Hence most are a "touch card here" not because the physical touch is important but it puts the chip the right distance from the other device.

But theft/spoofing doesn't seem to be a big issue and as a percentage of transactions it's tiny. The banks/card companies like it.
I think even the stores like it, less cash to handle, quicker.
I even buy my lunch using it and rarely use cash.

Fuck yeah it's the bomb.

Tap and go.

You don't even have to talk to anyone. Sometimes I even leave card in my wallet.

Love it, I get annoyed when I have to enter a pin # now :)
