View Full Version : The value of a good livery

Obviously beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all, plus I think I probably posted one of these last year too but I miss big tobacco in my sponsorship and it's why when I actually get the bug to make a livery for a game, I tend to always look to the past as opposed to the present. Click the, uh, ermm... Williams to see more.

I liked the hue of the Prosts. was it pearl effect? it kinda looked purple at some venues. And of course the Sauber Petronas were pretty.

Sweet!
The Arrows cars look mega :D

Agreed. Some of the Arrows are just georgous. Especially the 94.

And of course the classics, like the Lotus 49 and the 74 Tyrrell. Just like any well designed piece of furniture or a house. They just never go out of style.

On the subject of retro, is there a special significance of (lack of) black wings on a Ferrari? Superstition? Ross Brawn forbade them and they started winning?

Some of those designs really highlight the need for the livery to work with the shape of the car. Anything taken from ten years ago fits nicely because F1 hasn't changed its look that much since then and don't take too much imagination to translate across. You could even go back to when high noses started to appear with Tyrrell in the early 90s.

On the flip-side, some of those from the 70s look awful. Take the Wolf Racing (black with gold flash) for instance. Works well on the original, looks hopeless on a modern car.

And those Benettons always looked so wonderfully colourful.

This a good point and one that IMO is lost on a lot of the newer designs. Especially in lieu of these forsaken noses rolling out now. For instance take the new Macca. I find the front wing supports to be very ugly looking and I my gaze is instantly drawn to them. So I would have them (and a portion of the nose itself) painted black to mask out a sharp and aggressive pewter nose to draw the eye to... instead of it's protuberances. The Lotus nose is even more horrendous in my view but because it's not bright and shiny, you don't notice it as much. But hey, that's just me. ;)

Is this a joke (I can never tell with you and that's what I thought when I first read it) or do you mean just in the last 10 years or so? Because there have been plenty with black wings. In the 80's and 90's it was practically de rigueur for Ferrari. I know my second fave (and arguably the most beautiful of the modern era) F1 car of all time, the F640, has completely black wings. If it's just lately to which you refer, then I have no idea if there is a reason behind it.

Yes, I mean in the last era. Don't get me wrong, I love black wings on Ferraris (and the tricolore on the airbox, too), it looks mean and cool, specially on the turbo beasts of the eighties, but recently it is absent. I think they only had *some* black in the Giani Agnelli model (2003?). That's why I ask if there's a reason for their disappearance.

The last time I read the phrase "black wings" it was a 60's biker euphemism.

That settles it, the problem with todays vehicles are the shit liveries.

Faulty: Marlboro came on as "primary sponsor" in 1997, that's why the McLarens changed to West then, why the shade of Ferrari red got a bit lighter, and why the wings no longer have black.

Also totally agreed on that point of "livery has to match the shape". Most of the cars from the last 20 years (remember, it's 2014, 1994 was 20 years ago!!) look alright, but anything past then is hit and miss. I know fans online were slobbering about these designs on other places and message boards, but it really, REALLY depends on the era and how suitable it is for the current shape.

God. Please. Stop. No. Just. Ugh.

I didn't even click the link, I saw a hint of one online, I just despise the very idea because I guarantee it's not going to be done in a proper way. The way to do it would be making a "throwback" look, but that would take more effort than the McLaren there shows. Ugh. Garbage.

Nice retro look that seems fitting for this thread, but it actually for real! Wow!
Even the photo itself has a vintage look!

What I find interesting is that why isn't Mercedes insisting a decal on the new William's body work?

Three pointed star at the nose, maybe?

They may want to be careful about too big a logo so casual fans dont confuse them for works cars.

You can find Mercedes logo on driver's jump suits, but based on all the photos of the car that I've seen, I see no signs of Mercedes at all. I can understand making logos small, but with absolutely no logos at all, isn't that kinda odd?

This is also the very 1st time in history that it's being powered by Mercedes.

Maybe they're thinking of using one of the other brands, like Red Bull and Infiniti?

I'm sure it's simply down to what sort of deal the individual teams have with the supplier. Caterham, Lotus, McLaren, Red Bull, and Toro Rosso all have the logo of their supplier on the car, but Force India, Marussia, Williams, and Sauber do not.

FaultyMario
March 10th, 2014, 06:37 AM
I think in Sauber's case they have it somewhere in the cockpit where drivers can always see it.

To bring this up again, Williams now has Mercedes-Benz logos on their car in Bahrain.
