Well, that was epic. There was an amazing, historically significant car everywhere you looked, to the point I would look over and see 'ah, an Alfa TZ2, must go and see that in a sec', and then get distracted by a row of 1920s LSR holders and forget to go round to see the Alfa. I arrived before 9am and left at 5pm, basically spent an entire working day just looking at amazing cars. The access is incredible - Graham Hill's actual 1967 Lotus 49 (as driven ineptly by me in GPL), no ropes, no crowds, nothing except a sense of respect stopping me from touching it.

Within 10 minutes of arriving I saw a 1905 Darraq. A car that's 110 years old, but nevertheless packs 200bhp and I saw it charge into the first right-hand corner and powerslide through, with driver, passenger and car all seeming to lean into the turn as it drifted through the apex. Unbelievable!

Another thing that was amazing was hearing the 2013 F1 cars - last of the naturally aspirated screamers - howl up the first straight and then hit the brakes for Molecombe. They were going down three or four gears, and each downshift rent the air with a tangible blam and howl... you don't *feel* the cars like this even if you actually attend a Grand Prix.

Spent the day there today, arrived 7:00am, left 7:00pm, missed heaps of stuff.

Brilliant collection of cars, from historic legends like the jps lotus senna got his first win in and the 300 SLRs to a couple of singer 911s to 917s to a rotary orchestra lead by a 787b to seeing my first GT4. It was all just unbelievable.

Probably the best car/Motorsport event I've ever been to. Just incredible.

Oddly enough, I was watching Wheeler Dealers last night on velocity, and they had a 1903 Darracq that had like 8hp. They restored it and drove it from London to Brighton. Love that show.

Wonderful! Had you ever been to this even before? The first time I went was about two days after I met you, waaaay back in 2000. It's a fantastic event.

For me it was first time and while I had some pretty high expectations it still blew me away. In particular standing in the paddock when some pretty serious swathes of motorsport history is starting up and driving around you is complete sensory overload. A 917 firing up to your left, an Auto Union revving on your right and a line of 300 SLRs starting up in front of you. There's nothing like it.

I'm on my long swing home now so will post some pics when I get back

2015 was the first time for me too, it's one of those things that I'd long intended to go to, but kept not being committed enough to actually make a firm plan and buy a ticket when they were available. Honestly I kinda felt bad for not having gone in past years.

It was amazing, felt like all the significant cars from Gran Turismo and classic car magazines were all there right in front of me, and being driven. The next day when I went back and looked at my pics, it felt almost unbelievable that I'd had such a close experience of seeing, hearing and smelling such awesome cars.

My pics actually only reflect a small fraction of the experience, too, because when I got there, there were so many great cars I decided not to try and photograph them all, as I'd spend the entire day squinting through a viewfinder. All the other DSs, the Falaschi and Figoni cars, the V12 XJ220, McLaren F1, Bugatti EB110 SS, .....

Agree with that, you need to put the camera down and suck it all in rather than trying to capture every last moment in a photo. Very tempting to spend too much time taking photos though as even if you only watched the cars going up the hill you'd only have 2 chances to catch each car. It's not like an F1 weekend when you'll see each car go past you 150+ times so you really do have to tell yourself to put that camera down.

I'd also say that I'll be doing it again in the next couple of years and when I do I'll organise it a lot earlier and get tickets to 2 or 3 days. 1 day isn't close to enough especially if you want to go out to the rally section which would take half a day in itself I reckon.

Awesome photos of an awesome event. Thanks for sharing.

YouTube is awash with clips, including at least one 3 hour segment of the live stream they had on all weekend.

What a brilliant celebration of motorised conveyances. Probably the best in the world.

The Fiat was awesome, but I was more impressed with the TWENTY-FIVE LITRE, 200 horsepower Darraq, the 1908 land speed record holder. Fucker drifted a 107 year old engine-with-a-couple-frame-rails on bicycle tires!

A lot of the pre war race cars are just insanely awesome but unfortunately most of them are gone and a lot of them have been forgotten. It's a shame and I am always glad to see cars like this out and doing what they were designed for.

OK, Goodwood photos are loaded. Took me pretty much all day to lift, edit and load. I'm just going to put a small selection here otherwise the page will collapse but if you want more you can look at the album directly, here's the link https://flic.kr/s/aHskbYwiNg

Also worth mentioning that only about 10% of my photos made it into that album, if there's something specific you're looking for just yell. Anyway. here's a sprinkling where I've tried to show the different types of photo I took , not just what I think are the best ones.

Unbelievable. That really is an amazing sculpture. Also, I didn't realize that they used the actual 787B that won Le Mans. So cool.

Also, they absolutely should make that concept road (track) worthy and have it replace the Furai (RIP).

Fantastic photos Greg, you definitely captured the awesomeness of the event there :-)

I'd be more than happy to meet any of you guys there next year. You basically have to commit around April to being in Sussex on a specific date, and pay about US$100 for the ticket. Definitely worth it!

Seeing the R5 Turbo pic in Greg's flickr reminds me of seeing it run, it did a 360 degree spin in a straight line in front of the house, and carried straight on without stopping.

Also, I didn't realize that they used the actual 787B that won Le Mans.

Yeah, nah. I think nah.

I know that car is far to valuable to Mazda for it to be hanging 20+ meters off the deck, upside down in the elements.

The actual winning car lives in their museum, and came out for a run after a lengthy restoration at Le Mans in 2011 (with Johnny Herbert at the helm). I'm not sure of any movements it's had otherwise.

After winning Le Mans, Mazda built a couple of replicas for promotional purposes, one of which was gifted to the Le Mans museum, and it's highly likely that the one up the pole as well as the one which did the demo runs on the course were from that replica stock.

Freude am Fahren
July 6th, 2015, 08:43 AM
That's what I would have figured, a replica. The video did seem to make it like it was the car, but I doubt it.

KillerB
July 6th, 2015, 10:21 AM
I'd wager the one on the pole is a replica but the one that did the run is the real thing.

I ended up going on the Friday after a training course at work was cancelled last minute. Sorry I missed you gents, however I have vowed to never miss one again so if there are any takers for next year I'll be there.

It was magnificent as always, it cannot be overstated how staggering a spectrum and pedigree of machinery is not only on display, but fired up and thrashed up a hill.
