Finally saw it. As a super-duper devout reader of the EU for my entire fucking life, I wanted to hate it, but ended up loving it.

My wife, who is an avid Harry Potter fan, said she was able to successfully separate the books from the movies, and just fucking enjoy both. I guess I'll have to hug my "Legends" novels once every few years and remember them for what they were.

As for the movie... Yeah, some seriously over-the-top fan service, but goddammit, maybe it was the John Williams score or just seeing X-Wings again, but I fell for it hook line and sinker. Not at all a perfect movie, some plot holes you could throw a star destroyer through, but still infinitely better than the prequels. It's definitely an Abrams movie--much like (the first) Star Trek reboot movie, the characters and the dialogue are so fucking good it makes you forget the inconsistencies.

If I had one "major" complaint it's that the entire Starkiller thing was rushed, undervalued and ultimately pointless. Yet another "Empire Weapon of Mass Destruction To Use on Rebel Scum Planets Which Can Be Blown Up by a Single X-Wing and Some Careful Piloting." I just feel like they needn't have bothered, the main storyline with Kylo and Rey and Han was just fine. Having said that, I'm hopeful that now that Abrams has gotten the fan service OUT OF THE WAY, Ep8 and Ep9 will do complete 180s and be unique stories that don't follow all the usual tropes.

.... Still can't understand why they couldn't just go with Admiral Thrawn, the Solo twins and Mara Jade within that story frame. DAMMITISAIDIWOULDKEEPTHEMSEPARATE. :smh:

Insight into Finn's defection

http://www.polygon.com/2015/12/30/10690288/the-canonical-story-behind-tr-8r-the-internets-new-favorite

Finn has grown up as part of a four-man (or boy) fire-team consisting of himself, FN-2187, and three others, FN-2199, FN-2000 and FN-2003. Respectively, Finn's training mates have acquired the nicknames Nines, Zero, and Slip — the former after their alpha-numerical designations and the latter because he is often slipping up. But FN-2187 doesn't have a nickname. Why? A seasoned stormtrooper figures him out right away, after finding out that he's also the team's leader: "An outsider. You're on the outside, and you'll always be looking in and wondering why you don't belong."
---------
Another reason why FN-2187 is isolated from his peers is his aptitude. He's well on his way to becoming a model stormtrooper, scoring "in the top 1 percent" in exams, an expert with tactics as well as blasters and hand-to-hand weapons. As far as his superiors — who include Gwendoline Christie's Captain Phasma — are concerned, FN-2187 has only one flaw: he cares about this teammates just as much, if not more, than accomplishing mission objectives. It speaks, Phasma says, to a "dangerous level of empathy."
---------
it's easy to posit that the dying stormtrooper who smears his helmet with blood — the one whose death causes him to lose his final shred of faith in the Order — is FN-2003, Slip. And in the same way, we can hazard a guess that a stormtrooper who would recognize an unmasked Finn by sight and begin shouting at him in rage would likely be someone he trained with: Zero or Nines.
---------
Update: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary appears to confirm that the slain stormtrooper on Jakku is FN-2003.

TLDR: Finn was an overachiever that was never accepted into the group, and was punished for consistently helping out a struggling squadmate. The same squadmate who is killed on Jakku during their first real combat.

The problem is, none of that stuff is revealed in the film.

Isn't that the point of the Star Wars universe? The ability to craft huge backstories by selling novels/comics/encyclopedias? And now that Disney has its hand on it? Cha-Ching.

Yup. It's not like Han Solo's history was laid out for us before he decided to take a Jedi's work offer.

Kchrpm

Yet. #sequels

I just wonder if it's even necessary for most audiences, though. We already know he was kidnapped from his family and forced to become a stormtrooper against his will. They cared so little about him that they never even bothered giving him a name, and he freaked the fuck out when he saw real death and destruction in person. After that he defected as soon as he could. That's not exactly a hard storyline to follow. A hero being a great/lucky shot/fighter is a common action movie trope, I doubt the average viewer really feels the need for that to be explained.

My guess is, based on director's/writer's commentaries that I've listened to and deleted scene stuff, that scenes or dialogue detailing that kind of stuff are left on the cutting room floor because they don't serve the plot and/or screw up the pacing. There's a whole big action scene cut from the movie, as well, that only shows up in the novelization (they were supposed to have a battle in the snow against the people guarding the base).

Edit: Apparently I took at least 10 minutes writing that :D

Freude am Fahren
January 3rd, 2016, 08:52 AM
You said it though, average viewer. The movie is just perfect for that. No backstory needed. But the nerds love the backstories (no hate, I like it too. I just ordered the cutaway book on Amazon :D). So they get the best of both worlds. The right amount of movie for non-geeks to enjoy, then plenty of material to sell to those who want it.

I have read that Before The Awakening book (mentioned in Kch's link), and honestly there wasn't much in it that couldn't be inferred from the movie, nor is any info really that critical to know what's going on.

A brief rundown (incl spoilers, if you're really worried):

FN-2187 (Finn) is a Stormtrooper who has been brainwashed since birth into believing the First Order's way is the only way, except that he hasn't accepted the brainwashing quite as well as the other recruits in his team have. Phasma knows this and keeps a weary eye on him. Jakku is the second stop on his first deployment.

Rey lives on Jakku and scavenges for parts in the Graveyard of Giants (downed warship locale as seen in the film and in SW Battlefront) and exchanges her finds for food portions with a local trader named Unkar. To pass the time, she plays flight sims on an old computer that she rebuilt. One day after a huge week-long dust storm, she finds an old freighter that has been uncovered by the winds and begins to repair it, hoping to sell it for a huge amount of portions. After a year of work, Rey takes it to Unkar, but at the last minute two other scavengers who have been helping out betray Rey and steal the ship, using it as their ticket off the horrible desert wasteland. A stunned Rey eventually decides that she isn't mad at them, just troubled with herself. She couldn't leave with them because parents.

Poe Dameron is a pilot for the Navy of the Republic, the military arm charged with protecting the Republic's citizens. Poe's parents were both veterans of the Battle of Endor; his mother flew A-Wings and his father was one of the Pathfinders on the ground. The Republic cannot officially strike at the First Order as this would be considered an act of war. An incident on patrol leads him to disobey orders and discover a First Order rally point, which draws the ire of his command, but also the attention of General Leia Organa, who offers to recruit him and his wingmates into a secret wet works called The Resistance in exchange for 'white washing' his naughty little act. The Resistance has been set up in secret because the Republic has become complacent about how much danger the First Order really presents to the galaxy. Poe's first mission sees them using creaky old 'borrowed' Z-95s to hijack a Republic senator's luxury yacht and steal the information in its hyperspace computer. They find that the senator is in deep with the First Order, and not only that, but that the First Order is on the verge of discovering where Luke Skywalker has hidden himself. Leia tells Poe that they need to find a fellow named Lor San Tekka.

The problem stems from specifically this scene in The Empire Strikes Back, where Han Solo is working on the Falcon inside Echo Base.

http://www.starwarz.com/tbone/wp-content/uploads/hoth-echo-base-han-solo-repairs-millenium-falcon11.jpg

The full size prop they used for filming is built to a different scale than the interior sets. They attempted to hide this in the shoot by having Harrison Ford seated in the fuselage, but you can easily see that if he stood up he would easily be almost as tall as the outer skin of the cockpit. Then either through carelessness or a lack of attention to detail, any official measurements for the size of the Falcon were taken from different sources and would contradict each other.

There's a really good (and scarily in-depth) website somewhere out there on the great big internet that details all of this, but for some reason I can't find it.

I'm not sure what they went with in TFA. I am sure that people will debate it for years to come.

People talk a lot about Machete order if someone hasn't seen the films before. It skips episode 1 completely which, if you think about it, is hardly mentioned in 2 or 3 other than very briefly and misses out the whole stupidity of JJB, the Trade Federation, young Anakin and the whole Midichlorian rubbish. It also means the ESB reveal/surprise isn't foretold. Do it 4, 5, 2, 3 and 6 last.

Episode VIII has been pushed back from May 2017 to December 2017, which makes a lot of sense. The original release date was a bit cozy with Rogue One's release.

And I've found a webpage with a lot of good quality (and spoilery) SFX breakdown stuff; I hadn't seen much of it until now and a bunch of it gets pulled from YouTube. It shows in one scene that Adam Driver had been completely replaced by a full digital Kylo Ren... for a close-up shot!

Ivan think of one reason to digitise Kylo Ren's mask and that's to black out the eye area.

I suspect Finn is somehow empowered by the Force. Didnt the line Snoke said about an awakening happen fairly early and not long after either Finn didn't fire on Jakku or after the escape?

as for Rey didnt Maz say something along the lines of close your eyes and let it empower you to her in the basement storage area?

Crazed_Insanity

Welcome to the late for the hype club! ;)

Finn must have some involvement... otherwise he'd be such a worthless character... initially with the trailer, one'd thought he's a trained tie fighter pilot or has some critical inside info to destroy the new death star, but in the film, he's just a new recruit who knows nothing and often need to be rescued by Rey!?!?!?

Kchrpm
February 29th, 2016, 08:14 AM
He is not a new recruit. He has been trained since he was a child, but had never seen combat. Conversely, Rey had likely never been formally trained but had to fend for herself from a young age.

I do not think Finn is overly Force sensitive, though it is possible, we don't get enough information either way. It's obvious that Rey is far more Force sensitive, at least. I don't remember clearly, but from what I can tell from a Google search, Snoke says he has sensed an Awakening after Han and the crew head for Maz's. At this point, Rey and Finn find out that the Force is real, that the stories they have heard are true. Could that have been enough? Or perhaps was it when the two of them were doing things in the Millenium Falcon that neither could explain? Hell, it's possible the reason Han was so good at flying and shooting was that he had some latent level of Force sensitivity (and it would partially explain why it was so strong in his son).

It would follow the first trilogy to have two Force sensitive leads, but only one who is able to channel it physically (Leia is only ever able to sense the presence of others IIRC, and at no point shows interest in developing her powers, let alone becoming a Jedi).

Sorry, yeah, meant to say that he's an inexperienced 'rookie'. So far he's only instrumental in inadvertently connecting all the dots together..., maybe that's all the Force wants from him, but I suspect he'll probably become more useful later?

And speaking of music, is it just me that Ep8's music didn't impact me as much?

I was seriously wowed visually and moved musically by the trailer... I didn't went as far as crying, but it was awesome.

However, the movie seriously failed to wow me nor did the music moved me that much. Not sure what happened. Need to see it again to see whether if I was just too focused on the movie or perhaps there was really just less music... or did John Williams lost his touch....

Gonna have to try this out at some point.

The Force Awakens is yet another movie that allegedly syncs up with Dark Side of the Moon. (https://www.reddit.com/r/pinkfloyd/comments/4537im/the_dark_side_of_the_moon_syncs_perfectly_with/) I know people say that with a bunch of movies, but at least the bit included did pretty well. Would be a fun 2+ hour music video anyway.

Rare White Ape

Yes: he connived his way into the top office of the Republic, followed by the enaction of special emergency powers which gave him rule in perpetuity, followed by complete overhaul of the government and extermination of the Jedi… and it was all done legally with majority support of the senate.

Meanwhile he groomed the most talented Jedi ever seen and turned him into a Sith Lord.

He was such a good practitioner of the force that he hardly had to actively use it to put these events into motion. He passively used it, and took advantage of other people's weaknesses and desires. His full power was being able to do all that without raising anyone's suspicion.

Saw Rogue One last night. Really good (I'm not by any means a tough critic though). It was IMAX, which is awesome, but 3D, which I hate. That said, it had some great 3D use, especially in the flying battle scenes.

More thoughts...

I really like the Jyn Erso character -- and *hated* the fact that they took out her "I rebel" line from the trailers. That was her goddamn rosebud!

Saw Gerrera's character was cool-ish; had the potential to be really cool but felt wasted, IMO. The too-militant-for-the-Rebellion leader decides to give up instead of getting on an available starship and leading the fight directly to the Empire? Really?? #wasted

It goes without saying that Chirrut Îmwe is a fantastic Force-sensitive character and that Donnie Yen was a scene stealer (tho' that was kinda easy when everyone else's direction consisted of "be grim & sweaty"). But if I see ONE more movie where someone with a stick wins a fight against so much as a single Stormtrooper (much less an entire squad), I am gonna walk the fuck out!!#notreally #butstill #wtf

Still on the Stormtrooper-as-fodder idea, 1.) I had felt that the weak-and-wacky Keystone Cops Stormtrooper trope had been discarded by The Force Awakens (but honestly I can't point to any reason why). 2.) Seeing a Stormtrooper onscreen should invoke hate & fear, not eye-rolling snorty laughter and snarky derision. Otherwise what's the point? Get these clowns outta here! Can no one field decent troops in this galaxy far, far away?? I feel like the Nazis in Raiders of the Lost Ark were deadlier, more competent and more menacing -- give me some effective bad guys to root against, Disney, ESPECIALLY in a movie where everybody dies!:angry::angry:

Also, I could have done without Planet Druidia being in the movie. :finger: A single doorway on the entire planet? Really? Dumb. Keep it conventional that would've been fine, just make the Rebel fleet smaller. Plenty of other ways to keep them busy.

Really disappointed that Baze Malbus wasn't written as an old & bitter Mandalorian warrior-for-hire. Definitely feels like an opportunity to tie Jango Fett / Maori-esq warrior archetype closer to the canon was missed.

The lack of the SW Crawl intro script was acceptable to me. Doesn't need to be there. But the soundtrack was eminently forgettable.

The R2-D2 & C-3PO cameo at the Rebel base on Yavin-4 was pointless. We should have seen them at the end of the movie on the Tantive-IV starship instead 'cause that's where they were at the beginning of Star Wars originally anyway.

Uh... K-2SO was kinda big for a SW droid. Don't remember seeing anything that big in any previous SW movie.

::

That's about it for my complaints. I will go see it at least one more time, good movie but not quite a great movie. :)

Thoughts on your thoughts:
All white-armor storm troopers are cannon-fodder to trained, passionate soldiers; they're kidnapped kids held against their will and spread thin across an entire galaxy. They don't get just the cream of the crop, they get whoever they can. At least that's what I tell myself.

The personal guard troopers, in dark grey or red, those are the ones you have to worry about.

RE: K2SO's size, there were droids of that size in the prequels. I remember one smashing a damaged regular droid out of its way to continue firing. *Googles* http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/B2_super_battle_droid/Legends

Also, General Grievous's Magnaguards were quite tall IIRC.

Thoughts on thoughts on thoughts:

Kch, I'll definitely carry this thought about Stormtroopers into all future viewings of SW movies -- you're right, the only explanation that makes sense is to envision an army of Joe Dirts underneath all that armor.

Ah Super Battle Droids, it didn't even occur to me to compare K-2S0 to those mainly because the droid army idea had fallen out of favor by the time of the Battle of Yavin. Definitely in-line with size, I just was thinking about strictly "civilian-use" droids like C-3P0, o' course.

I think therein lies the film's faults.

It is a war movie.
It is a spy movie (black and white spies, not post-Brosnan spies)
It should be a samurai movie.
And the final battle sequence is overwhelmingly top-notch Sci-Fi .

But the dialogues were pretty meh and I think the production team tried too hard to reconcile those film genres and their narratives. Wasnt the movie finished like 2 weeks before release?.

My review is a big fat 'meh'. It's not necessarily bad, but it certainly wasn't good. It kinda felt like it went through extensive reshoots and rewrites actually. I was hopeful that all the 're-dos' weren't a bad sign.

- None of the main human characters made me care about them, I was only really legit sad when K2 got it. Ok, and the blind dude, maybe a little. I dunno, everyone just kinda felt wooden, and I didn't really get a good sense of chemistry between the actors.

- Kinda related to the 'meh', the soundtrack didn't really do much for me, it didn't really add to the epic scenes. Scenes I should have been going 'omg' over, just kinda fell flat. Also was kinda sad that the initial STAR WARS blare at the beginning didn't happen. I don't need the scroll, but man I wanted the initial boom

- C3PO and R2 cameo was totally forced, as was Leia's (face). Related, CGI human faces still have a bit of work to be done. Both Tarkin and Leia's faces were slightly off to the point it bothered me. Tarkin was a good cameo though, so I have no problem with his computerized face making appearances story wise. The Leia bit at the end could have done without her turning around.

- The first Vader scene was meh, and ended super cheesy. Second Vader scene is something I wish they would have expanded on. We still only have a couple minutes of *terrifying* Vader. I mean, I understand it... Star Wars is still a kids franchise, I suppose. But I still feel like this movie was the perfect opportunity to really showcase how terrifying Vader is supposed to be.

- The battle sequences had some very cool moments, and blind dude had some cool, if cliche, action sequences.

- K2SO is my new favorite Droid.

The space battles were good, lots of action all around. I didn't feel a huge connection to the characters, BUT I'm also glad they didn't try to get the lead characters into a forced romance, though it almost looked like they were going to...it wouldn't have worked IMO.

It's an interesting question. If you've never seen Star Wars at all, it can only work as a love letter to Episode IV thanks to 30+ years of nostalgia, fanboy levels of attention-to-detail, and a keen ability to construct a story based only off Ep IV's opening crawl. If you've never seen Star Wars you'd need to start with IV followed by all the movies in PROPER ORDER, then become a massive fan, then have to wait a few decades before being allowed to watch Rogue One.

If, however, you're set to enjoy a Star Ward binge (which I think is your original question) then yeah, watch it first but be careful that Rogue One doesn't upstage Ep IV thanks to better SFX, sound, and image quality. And beware that the killer third act of Rogue One will lead straight into the embryonic-but-confident opening act of the very first Star Wars movie.

Saw Rogue One this morning and I really enjoyed it.

It was great to see Vader being his badass self. As others have stated it would be great to see more of that but I actually think the small snippets makes him more imposing. and it makes him more special.

I don't really understand the new space craft. Seeing as how you don't see them again in IV, V and VI. Like U-wing or the Empire fighters that had a single wing. But it was just those small things. The movie did a great job of telling the story and keeping me engaged.

I didn't mind CGI Tarkin at all as he needed to be a main component.

And I really want to watch A New Hope. I wouldn't doubt if sometime in the future they show them back to back.

I believe she was contracted for all three sequels of the sequels. She'd done all her parts for VIII I believe, subject to any reshoots, but I suspect they'll have to reshoot and kill Leia off. Just doing it off screen at some point in IX, or maybe even saying she died between the films would be very poor.

I know there were a few people commenting that they'd like to have seen more character development for the semi-main players in Rogue One.

Well, this will be happening soon when the next episode of Rebels airs this weekend. Forrest Whitaker will appear in the show voicing his character Saw Gerrera. If you'll remember, in Rogue One he was a former Rebel leader-turned extremist warlord who mentored Jyn Erso as a child. The current series of Rebels is set before the events of Rogue One by at least a year, maybe more.

And, interestingly, while idly Googling info on Saw Gerrera I found out that he was actually in the Clone Wars TV series going back to 2012, but voiced by a different actor. In that show, set 20 years before Rogue One, Gerrera was the leader of a rebel cell on the planet Onderon and fought against the CIS (the bad guys in the Clone Wars) with the help of Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano.

Having Gerrera in a film would have blown my little fanboy socks off if I had ever watched the Clone Wars series.

I binge watched Star Wars Rebels Season 1 over the last day or so.

Before I persist, does it actually add anything to the Star Wars lore?

JoshInKC
April 18th, 2017, 04:02 AM
Short answer: Yes, with caveats.
Longer answer: The showrunner - Dave Filoni, is the same guy who ran the Clone Wars animated show, which is no longer canon along with pretty much everything else pre 2014. He's been using Rebels to re-introduce characters and chunks of formerly canon and extended universe stuff to the current canon in big swaths. So its never going to be major stuff that you'll miss and wonder about if you only see the movies, but if you're familiar with the novels and enjoy the extended universe it's fun and cool.
For example, some of the ship designs from rebels show up in Rogue One, and on the most recent season finale of the show there's something of an explanation as to why the rebels were so gun-shy to commit larger forces to the assault at the end of Rogue One.

Also, the show gets better after the 1st season. A bit less kiddie.

Rare White Ape
April 18th, 2017, 04:12 AM
Umm, sorta.

I'm halfway through season 3, so without spoiling too much...

It does involve a fair few plot lines that continue on from the Clone Wars animated series, which I haven't watched. The character Saw Gerrera was created for Clone Wars and ended up in Rogue One in a central role. He returns in an episode later in Rebels S3. There's a bit of Mandalorian stuff later on with Sabine, which again continues what Clone Wars explored. Darth Maul returns from Clone Wars and has a fairly central role where he is now agnostic to dark vs. light sides of the force and wants to use Ezra's abilities to unlock force secrets, which causes Ezra to dip dangerously close to dark side force usage on a few occasions. Plus central Clone Wars characters Ahsoka and Captain Rex make a return.

Outside of Clone Warsy stuff, the rest of the show pretty much chronicles the formation of the Rebel Alliance and features a lot of guest voices from OT cast members like Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Frank Oz and Billy Dee Williams. After season 1 Ezra decides to leave Lothal and continues on with the crew to help the Rebellion and learn to become a Jedi, so the show spends far less time at that planet. It gets a lot better once they free up the story line. The script gets into a lot of force mythology that they can't allocate enough time for in the films, which makes that worth watching, and explores a few leftovers from the Republic days. Plus there are the usual treats like space battles and badly trained Stormtroopers. I think it's worth watching and enjoy it highly.

The biggest treat: Grand Admiral Thrawn (formerly of now-non-canonical Thrawn Trilogy fame) is brought in as a central character of S3, to the delight of extended universe fans everywhere.

Where it goes from here, I can only guess that S3 ends by dovetailing nicely with Rogue One (a few Easter eggs from Rebels are present in that film), and I know for sure that season 4 will be the final in the Rebels series.

There's a bit of confusion around what Disney kept and what they threw out, but rest assured that the TV show and Clone Wars film from 2008 are still canon.

From what I read, writer Lawrence Kasdan and Lucasfilm honcho Kathleen Kennedy prefer very much to shoot to the script, but the two directors were loosening it up and going too far off-script than what Kasdan and Kennedy were comfortable with. And yes, it was going on a lighter tone that initially planned. It was probably a good move for Kennedy to dump the directors, but it's too bad that the movie was so far into production before she made this decision.

Makes what Disney paid for Lucasfilm seem a relative bargain. Pretty sure they've almost made their money back on just two movies.

On October 30, 2012, Disney announced a deal to acquire Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion, with approximately half in cash and half in shares of Disney stock.
I'm very confident Brett or Ross are gonna correct me on this but here it goes:

On Oct. 30, 2012, Walt Disney Co (DIS) stock was valued at $49.12 at Market Close. Currently it's valued at $107.69.

The Google lists George Lucas' net worth at $5.2 billion USD (and only #294 on Forbes' Billionaires 2017 list, heh). Throw in the $1 billion USD endowment to the Lucas Charitable Family Foundation and one would think that he's still profiting decently from Disney Wars.
