A Porsche Speedster. could have been a replica though.

Aren't the real ones worth like a beeeelion dollars? I pretty much assumed every one I've ever seen has been a replica since I also assumed all the real ones are in a garage somewhere wrapped in bubble wrap.

I think I've seen 1 Speedster here, but given that cars are usually treated like jewellery here by certain rich people I wouldn't be surprised if it was a real one.

Nevermind, it's the Spyder I was thinking of that's worth crazy money. I think the speedsters are still worth a lot, but not on the multi-million level of the Spyder. I'm not crazy about the speedster honestly... Looks too much like an upside down bathtub to me.

I have seen two yellow ones, that orange one, and a black one around here. I have heard of others. I think being that this area eats and breathes the automotive industry that there is a specific sub-set of people who appreciate the Elise for what it is and have bought them like me despite the abysmal road conditions around here.

The Elise is a car that engineering geeks lust over, and there are plenty of engineers around here.

A lifted Dodge Ram, on chrome 22s or similar, with SS badging on at least the side. And they sucked at parking it, despite going to a space with 2-3 open spots in a row. Almost hit me as they were trying to back up and get lined up.

Was on the bike and didn't get a picture, but saw a mid-70s Nova with '95-ish Dodge Dakota flush headlight/turn signal assemblies where the original headlights used to be. Actually looked really sweet.

Now that I think about it, weren't the Nova turn signals in the outer edges of the grille? I didn't notice what they had done with the grille.

speedpimp
May 26th, 2015, 01:21 PM
According to the pic of a '76/'77 Nova on Wiki, yes they were at the edges of the grill.

Speaking of headlight transplants, there has been a late '90's Suburban running around the area for quite a while with Range Rover headlights(the ginormous square ones) grafted on. Has an odd charm to it.

thesameguy
May 26th, 2015, 01:26 PM
I just saw one of those Range Rover conversions the other day, but on a pickup. Had a billet grille across the center, and since the RR lights have signals in them the grille extended past the headlights on the side and wrapped where the old headlights used to be. Odd for sure.

This morning I saw two '20s Fords, a '47 Chevy panel, and a Subaru Brat. I have no idea why two vintage Fords would be on the freeway on a Tuesday morning during rush hour, but there they were.

My question for you (Drach) is: do you see a lot of Subarus in Indiana? It's the Official Car of New England (especially the XV Crosstrek, you can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting one) and I understand Colorado as well, but I know at least the Legacy/Outback is manufactured there, so wondering if you see a bunch there as well.

I see them constantly. Not huge numbers but always daily. Wrxs are slightly rarer

TheBenior
June 5th, 2015, 05:49 AM
I think Subarus are fairly popular anywhere in the US that sees measurable annual snowfalls. Hell, Subaru sells as many cars in the US as, if not more than, VW does as a brand these days (adding in Audi pushed VAG past Subaru by about 40k cars last year). They hold their value extremely well here in Chicago, enough so that I don't understand who buys lightly used Subarus for only a few grand off of new pricing when they offer sub-2% financing on everything new that's not the WRX.

Maybe there's enough people with bad credit to support that pricing.

Saw a Hillman Super Minx. It passed me on my bicycle as I was struggling out of the Conestogo River Valley. Later I had got to Canadian Tire, and I realized the same car was beside me as I was waiting to turn left at the mostly T intersection.

Baby blue, with a white roof. And, strangely, left-hand drive. Although from the early sixties, it had small tail fins, reminscent actually of some models of Plymouth Valiant, which is about the size it was. (Large for a British car). But according to wikipedia, although it was a Rootes group car, Rootes wasn't quite part of Chrysler yet, and the car didn't share any design or engineering with Valiants.

On the same street a day later, I saw a rather normal, pedestrian-looking minivan (might have been a Nissan or Toyota, I wasn't sure) with abnormally small wheels. I'm not talking plain old flats, I'm talking about blowouts - tire coming apart. Something I almost never saw in PA as an adult.

The times I've stopped to see if the person with a blowout needed help, a quick glance at their other tires showed bald tires and sometimes cords showing.

:? None of my flat tires have ever been from old tires--it's always been debris (rock, nail, etc). How does an annual inspection fix that?

They check for weathering, age, tread, inflation etc. Things most people never do. Most people are 100% reactionary with tires - they look only when something has gone wrong. I think the fuel economy tire inflation law probably helped, since now anywhere that touches cars is obligated to check tire pressure so at least there are eyes on the tire. I've had the same experience as KB - when one tire has totally failed the others are invariably not far behind. It just a complete lack of attention.

Plenty of small tire shops here in Chicago sell used tires, which terrifies me, though I have benefited from it in the past.

I got a new wheel/tire combo for my Mazdaspeed3 not because my OE tires were worn out (between my short trips, splitting miles between the Miata/bicycle/motorcycle, but because they were showing cracks between the tread. I'm not talking about fine spiderweb-like cracks, either. It cost me all of $15 to get them pulled off of every wheel, almost certainly because they were going to sell them as used tires, deep cracks and all.

Two rare ones this week.

A Lotus Evora GTE - Only 20 (or possibly 30) made for the road, with most bound for China by all accounts. Looked great in silver pootling along in traffic on the M4. Left hand drive sporting the plate LOT 3S - A plate that would have probably cost £50k or so.

On the other end of the rarity scale a Citroen CX 25 Limousine Turbo 2. - What a beast! There can't be many of these left now. It was puffing a bit of smoke but otherwise looked in fairly good nick. The front track seemed to be wider than the rear, and the rear screen is curved around the longitudinal axis. Very strange.

I took my 2000 Subaru to the place where I found out my dealership does the "Ontario Drive Clean" get some near-emergency exhaust work done.

While I was there the mechanics turned away a 1989 Subaru for a "Drive Clean" because they don't have the equipment to test a car that old.

It was a flattish, longish 3 or 5 door. Searches suggest a GL or Leone or whatever they called them in Canada back then. It wasn't one of the really small ones (Justy?) Assuming it was a Canadian model at all. By the time my in-laws bought a Subaru in the early 1990's, "Legacy" was already its model name.

Should be faster with my camera.

But, then too, I was trying not to be conspicuous and troublesome because I was sneaking in walk-in service.

Real UK plates don't have the EU or country flag, so my vote is for illegal remake of a real US plate number from...somewhere. Amazing what people get away with as far as that is concerned.

It should also be noted that there are vaguely US-sized UK plates for vehicles that have US-sized plate receptacles, but those don't have a flag either, at least that I have seen.

EDIT: Wow, I was very much mistaken...must have been thinking of the older UK plates. Current UK plates can certainly have the EU "GB" flag on the left (though are not required to), and can even have country-specific flags in place of the EU flag. But to be a real UK plate, the one you saw would have had to have been in an AB12 CDE format.

I chalk up my brain fart to my advancing age :)

A search at google.com for "site:ancestry.ca grandad bmw" might find it, FWIW. ("Airey")

Saw a "patina'd*" VW Bug today with "this is not an abandoned vehicle" scratched (yes, scratched) into the deck lid. :erm:

*primer/rust/oxidation on every panel + vintage roof rack...it's a thing.

While out earlier I saw an extremely ratty FC RX-7 convertible. Was a complete piece of shit with a flapping rear bumper cover and a wildly white trash dude behind the wheel.

But... I had my window down and it made a very race-y "WHHHOOOOOOOOPPPP, WWWWHHHHOOOOOOOOPPP, WWWWWHOOOOOOPPP!!!!" sound as the guy was rowing the gears and accelerating VERY rapidly to get to highway speed.

Spotted this in Fort Wayne, IN today. Not sure if it's the real deal or a Fiero based kit.
