No pictures this time, and nothing to match a 959, but a fair few interesting cars knocking around as the sun starts to come out.

The dude with the very tasteful E92 M3 (black, sand interior - extended leather) in the road next to mine has chopped it in for a new M4. Silverstone blue with black wheels. It looks fantastic.
Jag E-Type S3 V12 Coupe - Red. Stunning, it must be fresh from restoration. Again in the next road over from mine - hooray for gentrification!
A few hundred meters further towards the posher part of town there used to be a green Tesla P80, base model with not much in the way of options. Nice but could try harder. There now sits a white P90D with all the options ticked. Sublime.
The same road also houses a couple of Detroit's finest. A very small, unassuming garage houses a black C2 Corvette Convertible stored above a Desoto of some description. I think.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante - Balloon white with black stripes.
Triumph Herald convertible - Red. Always out and about in the summer.
458 Italia - white. Cheekily abandoned in Mayfair.
Brabus Tesla Model S - who knew?
Matte Grey Aventador trying to set Kensington on fire.

All this is on top of the usual sea of German sports variants. RS audis, Ms, and AMGs of all shapes and sizes are very popular here. So far my favourite is the M6 gran coupe in Tanzanite Blue Metallic. Though a Samoa Orange TTRS being given a bootfull in Chiswick high road was a refreshing use of power that's not normally seen. Sadly it was outside the local Police station - didn't end well!

As I'm sure I've mentioned before, I consider myself very fortunate to live where I do and to be able to see the machinery that I have. However there is always a bigger fish. A few weeks ago I was invited to a friend's new flat...In Chelsea Harbour opposite the Chelsea Harbour Hotel. It's second multi million pound home o'clock. The man of the house kindly offered to show me round the car park for the building. It was like being in Wonka's chocolate factory, except with cars. A sea of near abandoned Ferraris/Porsches/Astons/Bentleys of the latest kind. Most under cover but recognisable. A few highlights were;

McLaren 650S
Audi R8 GT
Matching Ferraris - FF and F12
Rolls Phantom
Rolls Wraith
Bentley Mulsanne
911 GT3 4.0
991 GT3 in orange with copious modifications including a Rauh Welt style rear wing and what must have been oil drums for rear wheels.

Uncovered
McLaren SLR. Plate was "4 E" - probably worth 300k plus on it's own.
Aston Vanquish
A pre war car who's name escapes me, but I hadn't heard of it before, in good survivor condition. Plate was "O 4"

What was more shocking was the stuff that wasn't covered, which at first glance seemed to be much more run of the mill machinery, albeit with expensive numberplates, until you got a little closer.

The Silver R129 Merc SL (blocking in the orange 911 GT3) - turns out to be an SL 600.
The dusty, older Rolls Royce in one corner. Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow two door coupe by James Young - one of just 35.
Bentley saloon from the mid nineties? Turbo RT.
Old 964 911 parked up between a couple of new, sequential plated Range Rovers? 964 RS. A quarter of a mills worth of classic rear engined goodness just sitting there.

A fantastic experience, after which I was a gibbering wreck frankly. I've paid good money to see worse lineups! I'm looking forward to my next visit as I'm told that the owners of the supercars that descend on London in the summer all stay at the hotel, which valet parks vehicles in my friends car park. :)

They have those in SF - they are slowly replacing the Town Car-based Town Cars. The couple times I've Uber Blacked in SF, that's what's shown up. The limo company I use here also has them - even in 10-passenger stretch format!

Random thought: I was driving next to a GLA 45 yesterday and it's like some kind of brain teaser. It looks like an SUV/CUV, but as you get closer, you realize it's barely taller than the short BRZ. It was shorter than the Civic next to it (actually I looked it, up, 2.5" taller, must have been the road camber, but still, shorter than a Taurus). It's like a Hatchback pulling a Little Rascal's type trick.

TheBenior

They look good, but the C7 Corvette giving 95% of the performance for 60% of the price, and as much as I hate to say it, the lack of an automatic transmission doomed the Viper's sales.

Barring a surprise upswing, sales of the new Viper peaked at 760 in 2014.

Yes, admittedly there are actually a few I've seen tooling around. I work near where they're doing the development on them. They are all pretty rough looking test mules. Note that the exhaust and tail lights are not production. There is definitely something appealing about the flat grey though. Looks like a fighter jet. No matte colors for production though.

I was wondering is that was raw carbon or a flat paint. Really though, with the quality of wraps these days, all of the exotics end up in non-offered colors eventually. And you can apply gloss/matte films over anything too. Just check out Salomondrin's Huayra. He went from gloss to matte with just a PPF.

Most exotics have options between raw and gloss carbon, I'd just go with whichever is more "coveted" and apply a film to make it how I want it.

Not a car sighting, per se, but i had a fucked up dream last night, that someone showed up with an electric NSX, that was infinitely impossible to drive (it was a two-seater, but tandem (fighter style)) with levers, knobs, slides all over the place.

I remember (from the dream, doesn't happen much), that it looked like a GTA franken car, with the front end of a McLaren, the roofline of a Zonda, and the ass of a 458, and that it was "new" with 10 miles on it, having never sold.

Dream price was $32,000, original sticker was $380,000.

So, yeah. Moral of story: don't have a shot of vodka and a melatonin before bed.

As for reality, I saw a 90s (91-92 I think) Corolla, sun-spotted to shit, and jamming on "Hungry Like The Wolf" through the Target parking lot, through its shitty 90s era speakers.

I've been spending a lot of time on the bike lately, and it's summertime in Maine, yet somehow I have yet to see a single interesting vehicle on the road. *boggle*

Used to be that Tesla sightings were a novelty, since the closest dealer is in the Boston area and they're obviously pricey, but I see them routinely. Though I suppose seeing one with a Florida plate recently was vaguely interesting.

Didn't realize Ontario did that as well - Quebec's EV plates have green lettering instead of blue. They're rare as hell and highly sought-after by collectors. Now I'll need to add an ON one to my want list as well.

So, yeah, any idea that it's some kind of halo car is dead to me. ;)

Seems they're going to try and remedy that: http://www.autoblog.com/2016/08/12/next-bmw-i8-750-hp-three-motor-300-mile-ev/

According to Automobile (and as we reported), BMW will still give the i8 three brushless electric motors of its own design and a far more substantial battery, good for 300 miles per charge. While each of the motors on BMW's prototype pump out 268 horsepower – which would add to a total of 804 – Automobile claims the production-spec i8 will get by with 750 hp, and it should be noted that power is not always directly additive in electric and hybrid systems Either way, BMW is making a tremendous performance upgrade for the i8's second generation – the current plug-in hybrid only pumps out 357 hp while a facelifted model due in 2017 should increase that figure to a still-modest 420 hp. Modest by comparison to 750, anyway.

I would hope it would be since there was only two ever made. :assclown:

Sorry, guess I screwed up the nomenclature. One of the later ones, maybe an '88, with the vertical rear end as opposed to the one that slanted in. Figured it looked different enough from the first round to be considered another generation of it.

thesameguy
August 15th, 2016, 09:33 AM
There really only was one generation of Fiero. There were two body styles, the notchback and the GT. The notchback was '84-'88 and the GT was '86-'88. They were made concurrently. Some people might consider the '88s "second generation" since they had totally revised suspension, but the engines and the bodies and the interiors were the same as before. Really, the chassis was always the same.. they just bolted up new suspension in '88. My '87 has '88 rear suspension, for example. You can tell the difference between each year due to subtle styling variations - like the '84s had a single center decklid vent and the '86-'88 cars had two side vents... but I think that would be lost on most people. The only visual clue I can think of '84-'87 vs. '88 is that the '88s have 6" wide front wheels instead of 7" wide, and you can tell because the front wheels on an '88 don't have a lip like the rears.

I think you probably just saw a GT, but it could have been any year.

Notchback:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2460/3872317508_b70e9f244b.jpg

GT:

http://13252-presscdn-0-94.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/1987_Fiero_GT_For_Sale_Side_View_0_resize.jpg

And for snarky Phil they sold 20,000 Fieros in '88 alone, which is more than, say, any single year of BRZ sales. :P

Tom Servo
August 17th, 2016, 08:33 AM
Yeah, it was a GT. I admittedly have not studied my Fieros, so had assumed that was a second generation of it. Either way, still surprising to see one that looked to be in perfect condition.

thesameguy
August 17th, 2016, 01:16 PM
So it is - that thing is a rarity. A late '85 GT. I think they old sold them for a couple months. In '86, with the introduction of the fastback, the GT was the fastback and the GT became the SE.

thesameguy
August 17th, 2016, 02:02 PM
IIRC the story is the fastback was going to be GTU or GTA or something and the GT notch would have lived on, but there were concerns over confusion with other marques or models (and probably GM being stingy with branding dollars) so they opted to repurpose the GT trim. Externally, seems weird, but who knows what the real concerns or details were. I mean, GM never wanted or loved the Fiero, so all sorts of duh moments happened over the years.

FWIU, Motorex went through the whole federalization process with the R33, which was good for 1995-1998 cars, but tried to pass off R32s and R34s as being substantially similar so as not to go through the costs of legally importing them. In the end, the government wrote a letter to the Motorex R32 and R34 buyers confirming that their cars were legal since they'd been conned by Motorex.

Freude am Fahren

A lot theme plates start with a specific number, that sometimes relate to the theme. The education one in FL I think started with 123 ABC, though I doubt a citien got that one, but my mom's for instance was 603 ABV. So 0001 would probably have been a special request, rather than simply the first issued. Just my theory though.

That said, 0001 would still be a pretty interesting find. I wonder how Nevada does those plates. It seems to be one of those states that put special letters on their special plates, so that someone could still have a 0001 on a standard plate. Florida doesn't do that, so someone with 12345 on a Gator plate like mine would mean no one else in FL could have 12345 on any plate.

As I was just finishing up my Saturday morning bicycle ride, I was passed by a T-bucket. Might actually have been running on normal fuel; it didn't have that leaddy smell.

And across in the middle lane was a light metallic blue late fifities car, looking fairly stock, but with an enormous hood ornament. When did they stop making Packards? [Consults googlpedia to determine that Studebaker badged some cars as Packards in 1957 and 1958].

Yes, I think it was a Packebaker. It had the large letters (reminiscent of the back of my real Subaru) on the hood. Though I can't find any pictures with a ridiculously large hood ornament, and it would seem to clash with the scoop. I was running late and always need to concentrate hard at that stretch where I'm heading up to try and make a right turn at a light followed by a quick left.

Searches find the 1957 Packard Clipper (from Studebaker) did have hood ornament, but it was more staid, earlier-fifties styled car than the one I saw, which was, indeed, almost like the early 60's Studebakers.

The early 60's Studebaker Larks were pretty much the same as the larger/earlier cars with the front and rear shortened.

Back from when Subaru was making interesting cars! ;)

Last night on the way home I saw what I thought was a white Focus ST *rocket* off a freeway offramp and onto the surface street where I was stopped at a light. When I got the green I was on the gas to catch up... turns out it was a minty-fresh RS. My Antiecoboost XR got no love from that asshat. KNOW YOUR ROOTS, SON.

Got buzzed by an old, red Alfa Romeo I didn't recognise a few days ago. Very angry sounding thing. Turns out it was an Alfa Junior Z. Very cool little thing designed by Zagato.

Would have stopped if it wasn't for the rain and generally crappy conditions. I still have no idea if they actually sell cars or just repair.

I also saw one of those Fiat/Miata things on the highway yesterday. Looked pretty nice.

I was actually driving my wife's rabbit last week while she was out of town with the chevy. It was the first time I'd driven it more than a few blocks since last june.

Someone in downtown Racine has a mint Alfa Milano Verde in red. With collectors plates so I'm fairly confident that they intend to keep it nice, despite their choice in parking area.

I sometimes see the odd Gallardo or 458 outside the douchey bars on 6th street, but the Milano jumps out like a sore thumb even compared to those.

Saw a red Porsche 959 down in Orange County on highway 73. Also saw a newer Ferrari and Lamborghini. Found out later when I went to pay it that the toll to drive on that road is pretty excessive, guess the expensive cars make sense!

No phone on me at the time, but there's a new ZL1 sitting outside my building/complex.

Last week, saw a 96-98 Supra that looked showroom new.

The Starbucks 1/4 mile away has the usual characters most days (can't remember if I mentioned it before) SLS AMG and Charger Wildcat are usually parked there.

Lots of crazy spottings last night.

First I saw this weird custom thing out of the corner of my eye making loud noises. So I pulled over to see if it was coming this way. It wasn't, but I cought a glimpse of it. It looked like it was one of those Lexus concept cars from Minority Report. This is the best I could do for an image :(

for reference:
http://images.hgmsites.net/med/ebay-watch-lexus-2054-concept-from-minority-report_100220781_m.jpg

Then I was riding by a pretty posh resaurant on South Beach, when I noticed I was surrounded by 6 (!) Rolls Royces of various flavors. I later realized I was wrong though. One of them was a Bentley . Also saw a AMG GT there, and a McLaren, not sure but I think 12C, maybe 650S at another fancy Steak House. Oh, and earlier, I was almost cut-off by a Wraith crossing the merge median.
http://www.freudeamfoto.com/gtx/wraith-cut.jpg

Later I was behind a couple of guys who seemed to be together in a modified M4 and GTR. They were both loud, the GTR stupid loud, but sounded good, while the BMW just sounded flatulent. Further down the road we were joined by a 991 GT3-RS and shortly after a 997.2 GT3-RS. Here's all four, the 997 in front of the GTR.
http://www.freudeamfoto.com/gtx/cars.jpg

Then, finally, I was passing by the BMW/Rolls dealer, which, NBD, but then I notice a Veyron, so I slow down to look thruogh the window at it, and what do I see behind it?
http://www.freudeamfoto.com/gtx/chiron.jpg
A freakin' Chiron. I didn't even know these things were being delivered yet. (not pictured: They Veyron to my left)

List the FiST. If you find a solid buyer, go ahead and sell it with a clear conscience.

Yep. They look like the automotive equivalent of a human centipede, with the mouth of a Crosstour sewn to the ass of an Accord, then got beaten with dicks covered with dogshit.

Looks like my 2015 may be the last Honda I buy for a while, which sucks. They're just goddamn repulsive, even if the Type-R will have 300hp (but with FWD, BLEH).
