I think it's incredibly unattractive compared to the Mazda3 and Focus hatch, but I'm glad they're at least offering it.

I think it looks overly aggressive and will probably end up dating quite quickly (say within 4-5 years), but I don't think it's THAT ugly.

Wtf is it with Bangkok and I8's. I've saw a stack on my last trip and have seen more this week in Bangkok as I've seen in the rest of the world. It must be the only country in the world where i8's are more common than m3's

Nate, they tweaked the rear styling, for some reason.

Truth.

C'mon TSG, so the front-end looks like a Transformer -- you LOVED the Transformers when you were a child!!

I still love the transformers, but Civic is just ugly. The front end is clearly supposed to look aggressive, but what it looks like is an SUV, the type of front end you find on the Cayenne, where Porsche didn't quite know how to translate sports car looks onto a truck. It's a huge amount of real estate filled with bizarre fake intakes. It has Honda's insane two-level grille which is passable on the CR-V because I don't care, but looks ridiculous on the Civic. Back in the day all the Korean cars looked like silly impersonations of Japanese cars, but the new Honda front end looks like a silly impersonation of a Kia. The rear end is equally awkward - an overly-sloped hatch with gigantic insane lights. A couple generations ago I thought the CIVIC branding with the backwards C was neat, and then mimicking that on the tail light's was neat and I was sad when they abandoned that. They brought it back with a crazy vengeance, like it was a patient at Arkham. Then they threw in more stupid fake vents like a bizarre 2nd gen tC and a dumb center exhaust... It was neat when Ford put a center exhaust on a hot hatch, but now Honda is copying Ford is copying ... Corvette? The Civic is an insane mishmash of 3rd hand styling glued together, like Honda is in the kitchen sink business.

Honda went from a company of engineers who maybe missed the bling department but always delivered form-follows-function vehicles. There is so much Look at Me in the last ten years of Honda products all I want to do is look away.

Driving through my old small college town, theres a former used car dealership that now houses several oddballs inside the glass dealership with several "private property" signs around. Not sure what the story is on this place, but the cars very much stand out for this sort of mountain country in PA:

DeLorean DMC-12
Ferrari 360 Modena
Lamborghini Gallardo
Lotus Esprit (90s)
Maserati GranTurismo
Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

Never seen an SLR before, so it really stood out.

Late reply, but I think the i8 is more common here in LA than the m3 these days. I see a few i8s per day, maybe 2 m3s a week.

TheBenior

I probably saw more i8s in the 5 days I spent in LA/OC a couple years back than I have in Chicago in years.

That goes for the i3 as well.

Weirdly the Z8 is almost a homage to the 3.0 CS that I adore (thanks again, Cam) and it still never did anything for me. I've seen them in person and they feel like novelty or something.

Where I live seems to be a bit of a time warp for cars, but not nice cars. Yesterday I saw a 1991 or 1992 Dodge Daytona, in rough shape but still on the road. There's another person around here who's got a K-car convertable in nearly mint condition. Oh, and I also spotted a 92-96 Ford Aerostar.

Tom Servo
January 31st, 2017, 07:04 PM
If you do visit, make sure you get a vault tour. They do them three times a day and it's a $20 upsell, but it's about 2 hours of walking around in what used to be the underground parking garage that's packed with all sorts of interesting cars. They had Saddam Hussein's Mercedes 600 SEL limo down there. The big downside, they don't allow photography down there. Still totally worth it.

Also of note, they don't have any bathrooms down there, so make sure you go before you join the tour.

I saw a Boxster Spyder!
Was quite exiting as this is the first I've spotted on the road. With just 25 in the country they are rare.
Was on the bike so I pulled up at some lights and had a chat, opened with how excited I was to see a Spyder!
It was grey (boring!) and didn't really stand out in the traffic. Obviously any boxster looks cool, but the rear of the Spyder looks a. It more exciting with the humps, but dang grey really dulls down the loom of the car.
Nice to meet you Gareth. Enjoy the car!

Can't see an intercooler clearly in that pic, so it could be a non turbo GT, 25 GT or GT-Four, or if turbo it'll be a GT-T. Not a GT-R, but it still looks good. :)

Yesterday i spent part of the day at www.highlands.co.nz and got another ride in the 200km/h Porsche Taxi around the track (this time a newer model with more torque, so instead of hitting 180 like last time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aDaDYIkKF4), this time it did get to 200km/h). In car video coming soon, but it's angled as if i was a motorbike rider kinda cos of the g-forces depending on whether we're turning left or right, or going up or down. A lot of dashboard in shot, but that's cos it has a big dashboard.

But yeah, the track was wet, with dry patches around, but he still went really fast around it, and we even caught up to a racing GT86 around a long sweeper and passed it on a straight. Not hard in a powerful vehicle really, but still.

Saw a track members Porsche Cayman GT4 hooning around the track, drifting/spinning around the skidpan etc.
Saw two McLaren 650S's, one of them being the one you can get a lap as a passenger in for NZ $169, and one in the museum. Along with a Nascar, Rolls Royce Ghost, Ford GT40 (replica? - same shape one as in Forza, not GT), Paul Radisich's BTCC Mondeo, possibly not the one from TOCA 2 though, M.Schumacher's F1 car where he scored his first ever points in, R35 GT-R, Aston DB9 race car, a later model Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera (?) in the carpark and so on.

And a whole lot of different types of new Jaguars (F-types etc) behind the control tower in the pits, as Jaguar hired out the track for owners/prospective owners earlier in the week.
If you ever come to NZ, you need to visit this track!

I passed a small SUV with a full graphic wrap in various shades of green today. It was waiting to pull out from a side street. At first I went  and then I was like , but then I went all  when it got behind me and turned off, thereby preventing me from snapping a picture of it to share with you guys. If I'd had one of those Russian dashcams, I would have captured it the first time.

Oh, well, this is the mile-HIGH city, after all, so I'm sure I'll see it again.

When I saw him he was trying to cut across three lanes of some of the busiest daytime traffic in town - from a gas station, across the road, to a turn lane. The damn fool couldn't make a tight enough turn to get lined up once he'd done it. It was vaguely Austin Powers-like.

But now here's the question: was this thing previously on dubs, and they got wrecked or stolen one at a time or is it aspirationally on dubs, and he'll get the next one in a couple weeks? My picture sucks because most of my brain power was trying to noodle that one out.

Saw one of the Bentley SUVs yesterday. Still have not stopped vomiting. But in a way the original late 20's early 30's Bentleys were SUVs. After all, other teams did refer to the Bentley team as "lorry drivers". (Or so I remember; I'm having trouble tracking down citations). Pictures don't look too bad to me. But they could have done a better retro treatment of the radiator grill.

Ettore Bugatti, annoyed by the performance of Bentley, called the 4½ Litre the "fastest lorry in the world."

The story: Lori has a couple of wool rugs that belonged to her grandmother. As they have sentimental value to the wife, I took them to a rug place to have them pro cleaned, as they had probably never been cleaned ever. This car is parked out back. I did not notice it until I was leaving after dropping off the rugs initially. I intended to ask the proprietor of the business when I went back to pick up the rugs. Alas, it was a different person working that day that barely spoke English. He could not tell me what kind of car it was, but claimed, "My friend LOVE that car."

Earlier this evening, I was driving back from Iowa & helping my mother move. I stopped at a rest area in missouri to pee and smoke a cigarette. As I'm standing there by my car, a crappy-looking red lincoln ls pulls in making a terrible scraping sound like its dragging the muffler, but I don't think anything of it until the driver - an early 20's female, gets out and runs around while shouting into her phone. At this point I notice her car has left a wide trail of liquid behind it, and she's screaming about gas. Turns out that a fencepost had bounced out of the bed of a truck in front of her, hit the ground, and completely speared her gas tank. It was literally pouring out as we watched - it emptied in less than 3 minutes. Fun times.
I ended up sticking around and directing traffic around the giant pool of gas until her dad showed up.

Useless without a picture, I know, but today I saw a 1959 to 1962 Corvette (side-by-side headlights) convertible going in the other direction. I only got a glimpse, but it looked as if the body was covered with surface rust, like some old rat rod. Maybe a graphic wrap, I'm thinking, or some kind of paint job to make it look like rusty steel. At first I figured it was just an very unrestored Corvette that had been parked outside for years, until I thought more about what kind of car it was.

It was on my regular commute, so maybe I'll see it again.

I also saw a newish Corolla with a blue California plate with a number that is WAY after when they stopped making those plates in the 80s... either they took one of the new black plates and painted it blue, or at least some of the CA Legacy plates got painted blue. The car was moving so I couldn't take a picture, but I was close enough to see that it definitely had the embossed "CALIFORNIA," and the quality of the paint was excellent - it definitely didn't look like a homemade job.

Also well over a dozen 2CV of various configurations in a convoy. Yes in France!
Spotted 2 Lambos in Monaco and hope to catch them in traffic when our group took a different exit on a roundabout. 10 minutes later after some very tight roads we were back to the same roundabout and took the Lambo exit! I think I was the only one other than the guide that realised he did a scenic detour (i.e. Wrong turn)

One of my neighbours has a Honda Civic from about 1980. I often walk by the house when walking Levi. This is the first time their garage door was open. I only saw the back, so I did not see what condition it was in.

Did it look like any of these? (http://www.suncoastrvtrailersales.com/side-by-sides-for-sale-fort-wayne-indiana--xallinventory?vc=side%20by%20side&location=pierceton%20in)If so they are street legal, just like the Suzuki minitrucks and vans you see from time to time.

I randomly ended up behind a Jaguar while driving the Jaguar. I knew the next body style (X350) got a lot bigger than mine (X308) but I did not appreciate how much.

http://sacsaabs.org/sacsaabs.org/othercars/x308vx350.jpg

My hood is level with the top of the rear bumper. Sheesh - it's no wonder the newer cars look so slab-sided... they are gigantic! It's like a whole second Jaguar on top my Jaguar.

Apparently, there's a Viper ACR living in the neighborhood across the street. I've seen it twice in the last two days.

Silver/black, with all the bits/bobs on it, and no license plate.

I know it's cheating with the Petersen being a car museum and all, and I had no time for pics today but will go back. Saw Niki Lauda's 1976 and Michael Schumacher's 2006 Ferrari F1 cars.

Also got to go see Marshall Pruett talk about all the AAR cars in the Dan Gurney exhibit. Interesting hearing about the massive success with the Eagle GTP car in the early-to-mid 90's with Toyota, only to have a complete falling out between the two where now Gurney will get really noticeably angry if you refer to it as the Toyota Eagle GTP.

On another day I saw the blue number 48 at that garage. I see it sometimes at local drive-in promotional shows. Is it a large-engined Triumph coupe? (Tending towards identifying it as a GT-6, hmm actually maybe not large-engined)

Almost literally ran into number 48 last night. As I was walking home, it crossed the sidewalk in front of me, coming out the driveway from the 50's themed diner. Sadly I was about 3 seconds too late to have an opportunity to ask the driver what it was (perhaps suggesting a GT-6).

By the time I got close enough, he had already pulled out onto the road and into traffic.

As I crossed the driveway, a red-and-white real Mini was preparing to leave.

Saw my first, or maybe second I forget, Alfa 4C but this one was in a typical Alfa position, strapped down to a flatbed wrecker.

The Best part was it had paper plates so a new owner didn't have to wait more then 4 weeks for the Alfa to get its first wrecker ride.

I had some pretty special "sightings" in the last few days. On Thursday, I went to Autoworld. It's a car museum here in Brussels. They have over 250 cars on display. There is a special Ferrari exhibit right now for their 70th year. The collection is pretty amazing; several multi-million dollar cars, including a Jag D-Type. There is a Ferrari 250 GTO, but it is a replica.

When Lori was in Antarctica, she got to know one of the mechanics working there, Pierre. He lives in a small town called Marloie in Belgium and has a collection of cars. Lori and I were going to Brussels and I suggested Lori reach out to him to get together. He invited us out to have dinner and see his cars. We took a two-hour train ride to his very cute town, where we had wine at his house and dinner at a local restaurant. Pierre used to own a Toyota dealership, but now he just works out of his own private shop, which used to be a Mazda dealership. He has about 30 vehicles, a mix of motorcycles, trucks and cars. His crown jewel is a 1966 Jaguar E-Type. It was simply amazing. Other cars he owns include a 1980 Corvette,a Jeep Willys, four Land Cruisers in various states of disrepair, two older Corollas, one being a rally car that he races, five Celicas, two of which are GT-4s, a 911 Targa, an Alfa-Romeo Spyder, two Jag XJ series Is, a Chevy camper van (unusual for here), an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint, a Toyota MR Spyder, and several other old Toyotas. It was a bit sad that many of them were in a dungeon-like environment simply collecting a thick layer of dust, complete with cat paw prints. :( The only cars that get driven on a semi-regular basis are his newest Celica (daily driver), a new Toyota Hilux, the Corvette, the E-Type and his Honda Gold Wing. Regardless, it was a good time. Currently, he is rebuilding a MR-2 Turbo for a client. He has to finish it in the next month, because he is going back to Antarctica.

They aren't likely to get any cheaper, and good ones are only going to get harder to find. Pick one up, buy a new pre-cat while/if you still can, and you'll be good to go for many years of keeping the smog testers happy. :)

I kind of want another one - one to play around with. Maybe do the easy more boosto! stuff for a while as I save up for a 2GRFE swap and work up the tools/guts/knowledge to do it myself. A modern 3.5L V6 in a 2800lb chassis would make a fantastic drivers' car. Like an Evora but cheaper...

The pair tsg posted don't look like they need too much work from the outside, although there's probably a good reason why they're both covered in that much dust.

I believe it was "The Caddy that zigs!" Shocking that it wasn't all that successful with that tagline.

When my dad was working for Opel in Germany, he got to basically just check cars out from the company and keep them for as long as he wanted. His favorite was an Opel Omega with a manual transmission. That was the car that eventually came over here as the Catera, only you couldn't get it in a manual and they did a really crappy "gussying up" of the front and rear fascia to make it more Cadillac-y. It was fun taking that up to ~120 on the autobahn. Also, first car I ever drove in snow. We were in Oslo for Christmas at my aunt's house, and he'd parallel parked on a reasonably steep uphill, then had a few drinks at the party. Norway has incredibly strict DUI laws (as I hear it, if you have a glass of sour milk you could end up over the limit), so he made me drive. I'm still amazed that I got that thing moving without hitting either car around it or fishtailing into something else.

Then I had to explain what a catera was, and why I was so surprised to see it.
