dodint
September 13th, 2017, 09:34 AM
It was fast back then?

thesameguy

It was comparable to other quick cars of the day, sure.

novicius
September 13th, 2017, 11:03 AM
Just how fast was a Ferrari 328 anyway?

thesameguy
September 13th, 2017, 11:14 AM
Not terribly. All the fast cars from that era were ~300hp/~3000lbs. It wasn't until the late '90s that 300hp was a thing many people could afford. Then all you needed was an Eclipse and a VAFC and you were set.

High 13s in the quarter was pretty damn quick back in 1990.

Then, a few years later, the LT1 4th gen F-bodies came out, and affordable cars started getting legitimately fast again.

Likely. In the side shot you can see his instagram handle, he appears to be one of those guys with a ton of money and a penchant for nice cars, then instagramming them. He was clearly concerned with appearances, but he also drove in a particularly non-douchey way in heavy traffic with additional heavy pedestrian traffic, so I'm giving him a pass.

I'm wouldn't even consider getting involved in a $70k first-year car, but maybe an off-lease CPO model? On the table.

TheBenior
September 20th, 2017, 08:41 PM
Seems fair. Every Giulia press car having issues makes me think that it's a car that you really wouldn't want to own out of warranty. Or as your only vehicle.

The cars themselves are not remarkable, just the setting struck me as odd. This picture was taken in the lowest level of parking garage in downtown Cincinnati on a weekday morning:

http://gtxforums.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=2603&d=1506362232

A mint E36 M3, C5 Corvette, a Mercury Monterey (?!?!?!), an older mint Mercedes coupe of some sort, and out of the frame there are two newer showroom condition BMWs. And then my 650i there, to the left.

I figure this is either overflow parking for a speciality used car dealer or someone that lives in the city owns 6+ lease spots just for their collection.

Ridin' down the road with my son on a Sunday morning, out running errands and what not, I spied a car show in an office building parking lot. Naturally, I immediately swerved across eight lanes of traffic and jumped into the parking lot like Bo & Luke Duke to see what was going on. Some pictures follow - my first time trying postimage.org as a replacement for Photobucket.

My son seemed merely "okay" with the idea of going to look at old cars with his old man, but then a brand new McLaren drove by us, entering the show, and he immediately got extremely interested.

https://s19.postimg.org/nu761gckz/IMG_2271.jpg

They let him sit in it, too. I handed him my camera and he took about 50 interior pictures.

"Dad, what does the Launch button do?" he asked me later. I didn't know what he meant until I saw this picture.

https://s19.postimg.org/jz3rz3ymr/IMG_2290.jpg

If I could have chosen any car (discounting resale value), it might have been this '72 Plymouth Scamp with a 360 V8 and a white vinyl top. I could do without the white stripes, but I have always liked this body style.

For the GTXF Mercury Montego Mafia, there was not one but two in attendance. One was this red one with the hood up...

1-ton K-30 Suburban was pretty cool too - up close it was easy to see this was a regular driver, not a show vehicle.

I got to show my son "my" first car - a '74 Standard Beetle in Rallye Yellow shown behind the Jeep. Okay, mine was a '74 Super Beetle with the slightly different front end, but it wasn't the time to nitpick.

Lexus LC 500 Gets Tangled Up In Blue With Butterfly-Inspired Paint (https://www.motor1.com/news/182830/lexus-lc-500-structural-blue/)

In creating this color, Lexus initially needed 40 layers of paint to get the effect. Further development reduced it down to seven coats, which made the shade realistic for production. The process is still quite complicated, though, and the company can only make two examples of the Structural Blue edition each day.
Impressive!

Saw a 720S in the wild for the first time. What a car that thing is. It passed me while I was waiting got make a left at a light. I did a double take then pulled back in to the lanes going straight and followed it for a bit. It's crazy how much heat comes off cars like that when you are behind them on a bike. Felt it before with others like it too. He pulled away at one light pretty briskly (though probably only like 25% throttle still), and got a nice bang on the 1-2 up-shift. He eventually pulled into a nice side neighborhood, so I stopped following him.

All manner of exotica on Saturday as I went to Newport Beach, Orange County to watch a rugby game.

McLaren something or other. Audi R8. Bentleys and Maseratis and so on. Best part was a Murcialago that was show boating and revving like crazy and took off like a bat out of hell. Only to be pulled over 30 yards past the traffic light we'd been stopped at. The black Tahoe was a cop car and you couldn't really tell it was a police car much from behind it at an angle.

Keep seeing an orange McLaren 650S (?) around town, but annoyingly can't seem to get it to my car show. Same as a silver R35 GT-R, white & black Maserati GranTurismo's, a 2006ish Dodge Viper SRT/10 (the one with the huge GT wing on the back), a red Audi R8 V10, a white Audi R8 convertible, etc etc.

Along with all them (plus more), there's also an orange DeTomaso Pantera in town now. And my mate recently sold his R32 Skyline GT-R and bought a 1992 (?) Dodge Viper RT/10, in white. He's already put a big GT wing on the back, which i think looks alright.

TheBenior
April 17th, 2018, 03:00 PM
The base price of the Type RA is already as much as an M240i XDrive and approaching M2 money. An extra $10k is more than M2 money. I'm not sure what you're getting over the BMWs besides rear doors and AWD relative to the M2. Can't really say reliability, since it's not like EJ25 engine has ever been especially reliable.

But, I suppose they only need to find 500 well-heeled Subaru fanboys nationwide.

Edit: the GT is so hawt!

back to the M2/STi RA:
AWD is a big deal for way too many people
Left stock the subbie is cheaper to maintain, plus the STi keeps its value well

With that said the STi is not worth $10k more than a WRX, and the RA is $10k more. With the $10k markup that puts it at double the price of a WRX

And here's the McLaren i mentioned above that i've seen around town a few times now, and know where it lives, but this is the first time i've been able to get a decent pic of it (have another, of it way in the distance) right in front of us at the lights this arvo. And it's the first time i've seen the Porsche 356 in front of us, but recognise the owner and know he's got a lot of nice cars (SLS AMG, 991 911 GT3 RS which he's raced in Targa NZ before and won, and so on).

Neat. Personal preference, but not a fan of the flair on the Porsche. Let the car speak for itself.

The warm weather is starting to bring some of the fun cars out on the road. Took the DMC out on Saturday night, was fun. Driving it as night is even weirder as you can see the camera flashes from other people on the highway. Need to get my tint appointment setup soon as being other peoples Notable car sighting will get old quick I think.

Maybe someone else can corroborate this - I think I saw/heard a newer Raptor (non-V8) at a distance under heavy throttle, not sure if it was stock or had some exhaust work but it sounded not unlike a delivery truck missing a muffler. It gave me the sad.

Someone here at the office has an effing sweet '68 Chevelle SS, saw it for the first time yesterday. Now, *that* thing sounded ace.

...being other peoples Notable car sighting will get old quick I think.

Agreed. It's one of the reasons I like my older, stock Honda Accord in the stealthy power beige color with no stickers, personalized plates, tinted windows, or anything else to look memorable or even noticeable.

I got called out once at work when I was about 20 years old by someone I worked with who saw me driving like a jerk that morning in my bright blue VW Beetle with personalized plates and I've never forgotten that.

I've always thought it would be fun to have a plain jane car from an obscure brand that you don't see many of in the US (a Mitsubishi or Suzuki, for example) and take all the badges off.

Police officer: "Okay, let's see if have your story straight, ma'am. You said the reckless driver caused you to swerve off the road, jump the train tracks, flip end-over-end down the cliff, and crash through the ice into the frozen lake, where your car burst into flames. Is that what happened?"

Lady on stretcher, being loaded into ambulance: "That's right, officer."

Police officer: "What kind of car was he driving?"

Lady: "Well, it was a...um...silver or grey...uh...vehicle..."

Totally, and that's on my mind when I drive it. Not that I'm a reckless driver but I know that if I do something not good I'm not just going to be able to ease back into traffic and move on with life. I think I have the only DMC in this part of Pittsburgh so if I go blasting through residential zones with The Power of Love at full tilt it's going to catch up with me eventually.

Took notice of a gorgeous W124 300E today while puttering along on the freeway. Lowered slightly, tint all round, sexy wheel and tire package, and the suspension was a symphony of movement while the body remained rock steady.

Later, got passed by a red W126 560SEC coupe with a lovely exhaust sound; woofly and burbly and melliflous as he accelerated away. There's an incomparable beauty to the elegant and timeless Paul Bracq designed pillarless coupes of the eighties. Until they start being neglected or have large chromey wheels installed on them; then they look tacky.

Distinct lack of cool vehicle sightings in the 1,650 miles to OH and back over the weekend, save for a screaming yellow new-looking Lambo (I'm out of the loop on current models) on I-84 in eastern New York. Cheating a bit as I was also on the way to the Goodwood breakfast club meet, but I found myself stuck in a convoy of around 27 McLarens on the A3 through Guildford last Sunday. Nothing older than a 12C Spyder in the convoy, mostly new 570s and 720s but it was still quite cool to be in amongst their number, albeit in an Audi. Didn't last long as they were more concerned with arriving en-mass rather than stretching the car's legs. I didn't have such constraints and overtook them all!

Cheating a lot - at the show were 2 F1 GTRs (02R in the Ueno Clinic livery, and 13R in the LARK livery No. 60) and the P1 LM. Not a bad showing for the Woking factory!

Last Sunday I almost seriously considered going to a real live car show. But the lawn needed cutting and my wife also wasn't terribly eager for either of us to go to the "Rod and Gun Club".

Actually I believe it was the "Waterloo Rod & Gun Club", between Lobsinger and Hawkeville Road, just west of St. Jacobs (1075 Bo De Ln, St. Jacobs). As opposed to the "Elmira Rod and Gun Club" which is nestled just behind Floradale (6533 Reid Woods Drive, Elmira). The latter is only accessible via a dirt road, I believe, which would not be good for fine classic cars.

Anyway, I needed to gas up and decided to go to the gas station at the beginning of Lobsinger Road, not far from the Waterloo Rod & Gun Club. (And, actually pretty close to either location). And, indeed at the same time I pulled in, so did a bright red 1969 Cadillac convertible. You could tell it was a 1969 because of the vanity plate on the back. (69 Caddy, Ontario I believe). I went home via a country route and just after the St. Jacob's roundabout I saw a Pontiac, likely a GTO, coming the other way. Medium metallic blue.

(https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/a25455899/2019-bmw-3-series-wagon-dead-in-the-us/) Which means no BMW wagons at all, since I don't think we've gotten the 5 series wagon since the E60 (E61) days. Nevermind the lack of diesel options as well.

Unless you count the Gran Turismo abominations.

Ah. I thought so. Wikipedia tells me the Espada was a derivative of the concept car Lamborghini Marzal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamborghini_Marzal).

Us who started collecting Matchbox toys in the 1960's remember the Lamborghini Marzal (http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk/1index/sf20-d.htm) as one of the first Superfast models. Of course, being a Matchbox toy it wasn't clear to us that the prototype wasn't really a car anyone could buy.

I believe my Marzal is darkish metallic red, not too different from my real-life 2016 Subaru Impreza, actually.

An hour or so I noticed a car parked on the street that I could not identify. I'm not sure how its generic looks and bland color caught my eye, but I did a double-take when I first saw it. Looking down from an upper floor nearby, it was hard to see a logo or name. A co-worker, probably too young to remember Toyota Supras but with better eyes than mine said it said SUPRA on the back. Another guy said it was a Suzuki due to the "S" logo.

I finally had to walk down there and find out for myself. It is a Seat Cupra with license plates from Durango, Mexico. I don't think I've ever seen a Seat car before.

Saw an LFA the other day while walking my dog. Of course just some old guy putzing around at idle basically. His plate was "LFA 1[XX]" (Couldn't remember the last two digits). So I'm guessing it was his chassis number. It pulled into my neighborhood as I was heading out, and as I was coming back in, it pulled out. I was excited to hear that glorious V10 as he pulled out on to the major roadway, but nope. He just pulled away about as quietly as possible with that car.

I think if Toyota had re-released the LFA with no changes except legally necessary, an aluminum chassis and cheaper body materials, and put a Supra badge on it and sold it for GT-R/NSX prices, no one would complain.

hahaha, of course they would complain. if it didn't have some "3JZ" Inline 6 turbo that can be tuned to 1,000 hp, they're going to complain. Ironically the BMW engine probably can do that, but they'll complain anyway.

There was a Forester Sport at the dealer today. I did not know it was a thing. As near as I could tell the only difference was sporty wheels and some trim.

The STi Type RA was still in the showroom. I did not look to see if there was still a $10,000 dealer mark-up on it.

Subaru has basically neutered their whole brand in terms of performance. Basically, none of the option packages get you any kind of performance upgrade over the base version of the car. With exceptions of the Legacy 3.6R, Outback 3.6R and WRX STi which are the very top of the price bracket.

Subaru used to be about cheap fun with some limitations. Like you knew the interior wouldn't be the greatest but man is it a hoot to drive. Not anymore, but hey, they are selling more cars.

American classics are pretty common around here. Semi-exotic sports cars, however, are quite rare. The last 24 hours or so have been unusual. I saw a Ferrari 360 Spyder parked near USC. I saw a Lexus LFA in the wild, as well as a Lotus Elise during the same drive. Then, I saw a very clean-looking 2nd gen. RX-7 convertible.

I wonder how much weight that adds

George
April 3rd, 2019, 01:27 PM
Good question. Some quick googling suggests it can add fifty pounds or more to the inside of a truck bed.

I was thinking about how it would look in ten or twenty years. Probably pretty crappy, and I bet that stuff is hard to get off. It also seems to me, with no actual knowledge - just making assumptions, that moisture could get in under the sprayed on stuff in some places and cause rust.

Most who drive new cars would probably say it will be someone else's problem in ten or twenty years. That's what they used to say about vinyl tops, too. Well, I drive ten to twenty year old cars. Don't ruin 'em for me!

I think it's cool on old trucks and jeeps, but anyone who covers a brand new vehicle in that stuff probably has more money than brains.
