There's an orange MG Midget convertible (currently with winter hard top) parks regularly in our parking lot.

Three front wiper blades. Wow.

Orangey Ultima GTR in a local car compliance/repair/build shop.

First one i've seen in person. Didn't get pics, cos there's a lot of nice stuff in there that owners may not want shared everywhere.
He only deals in nice cars, like mainly US muscle, but also a lot of brands from other countries. There's also a Ford GT40 MK.II in there (silver), but it's possibly a replica. First Mk.II i've ever seen too.

Thoughts on the Ultima? Was it carbd or injected?

Was in San Fran/San Jose last month and damn - Teslas are everywhere. Yeah we got plenty of S and some X around here, but the new 3 arent here yet (rhd last!) and I havent seen an original roadster on the road here.
So I was a bit excited to see a huge number of 3s and ... a roadster

Also the first motorcycle I saw was a Zero.

It has to be ugly or you wouldn't know the owner enjoys the fragrance of their own emissions.

I feel like the Clarity is barely even scratching the surface of the pantheon of ugly cars.

dodint
May 7th, 2019, 07:16 PM
The partially obscured rear wheels is one of those unnecessary things car companies do to show how different and unique their electric car is, kind of like those goofy notches in the front fenders. That's why I liked the Volt so much, it was a decent looking car that happened to have an electric component. It didn't subscribe to the 'goofy looking because electric' trope that some car companies feel is necessary in order to entice that faction of consumers.

Godson

Agreed on the ugliness of electric cars other than Tesla.

I saw a sharp-looking Japanese station wagon yesterday. As I got closer, I realized it wasn't an Acura as I first thought, but instead a Volkswagen.

Nope. It was a new Buick Regal station wagon!

Maybe old news to everyone else, but I hadn't seen one before. While googling just now to find a picture of it, I found this instead, which is much more fun.

Okay, so in the same workshop where i saw the Ultima GTR last week, i saw something else interesting there this week.

Firstly, are there any other cars that look like this from the front? It was definitely not a Dodge Challenger, it was very similar to the shape of the Lambo below, and possibly even was a Lamborghini Espada.
Anything British that looks like this? It didn't really look American.

https://www.sportscarmarket.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/1969-lamborghini-espada-series-i-front.jpg

I couldn't see the sides or back, only a dead straight front view.

Nope, even debadged. And the Datsun isn't wide and low enough.

May get another look next week hopefully.

EDIT: Another Google search bought up an article from this year about one being restored in Christchurch to eventually reside in Dunedin. But it's green, which i don't think was the colour of the one i saw.

Well, turns out i saw this exact car yesterday, in the same shop the orange one was in. It looked to be in a finished condition though, number plate and everything. Saw it from the back, with a nice Lamborghini badge under the window. This shop has so many nice cars as it's one of only a couple of car compliance places in the city.

Fairly confident the orange one was the same make and model, but still gutted i didn't see it again.

And we cant just import cars - so you have to pay that price if you want one. And you make it to the top of the waiting list!

Thanks! I also liked the juxtaposition of the super bright green thermoplast in front of it. It looks like the wheels are $13k, but to add them you do have to add the Weissach package at another $18k (and I'm having a hard time figuring out what the Weissach package entails other than spending $18k).

I was almost certain that this was the "Metallic" paint at another $4,220, but I could be wrong.

Either way, a bonkers amount of money to spend to be stuck averaging 12mph in LA traffic, but not as bad as the Senna I saw a few days before it.

Hmm. I only just noticed the bike lane. Doesn't leave a lot of door room.

It's a reasonably wide bike lane (if you feel like Google Street Viewing it, it's southbound 7th between Arizona and Santa Monica Blvd. in downtown Santa Monica). It's just around the corner from my work, I use it daily with no issues. The one on sixth is wider and has some buffering, but I've not had any dooring issues in this lane.

If I recall correctly, the Weissach package is a "hard core" track package, unlike your more common- more peasant Clubsport package, which mostly involves adding lightness (by removing a lot of stuff,) and sometimes replacing said stuff with lighter versions of it. Titanium rollcage instead of steel. Carbon fiber this, carbon fiber that. Thinner (lexan) rear window? May include 6 point harness rather than your standard seatbelt, depending on the model, etc

It'a $1000 worth of stuff with the Porsche premium. used mostly to show off just how much more money you spent on your car than that lawyer with all those ads everywhere.

They did make four door GT-R's, but only a handful and not technically from Nissan. The Autech R32 GT-R for example. Pretty much a GT-R, with all the running gear etc, and 4WD, but missing the turbo's on the engine. RB26DE instead of RB26DETT.

First one i ever saw in person was when one came to a Skyline meet i organised back in 2015.

My red Skyline is the third car in the pic.

Lotus Esprit would be a unicorn for any area I would think.

There is a very tiny little Hispanic Jewish church at the end of my street. When they have large gatherings every several months I see this amazingly perfect yellow RX3 SP in the lot. One day I will snap a pic when I go by.

Even living in LA, I haven't really ever witness any of the holy trinity of those hybrid supercars... until recently around my neighborhood!

I finally saw a Porsche 918 in the wild! Driven by a chinese kid. :erm:

Of course my neighborhood isn't particularly affluent, it's just what we have lots of authentic asian restaurants so I guess the kid just took a very flashy painted or wrapped 918 out to enjoy a meal around my neighborhood.

Geez, I can't even imagine how much money his dad stole from the taxpayers back in China! But the car looks great though. ;)

As we drive along Crowsfoot Road to Guelph, my wife often remarks on the "Harry's Food Truck" sign at one of its intersections.

She did so the other afternoon, and again on the way home in the evening.

When we got to the Crowsfoot Intersection, and were waiting for the green light, something like an old UPS van turned onto the road coming towards us.

Sure enough. It was Harry's Food Truck.

The 9:11 Magazine web TV (https://911-magazine.porsche.com/en/) format has also dedicated an episode to selected studies and examines the connection between the studies and the current production models together with Porsche Chief Designer Michael Mauer.

Weissach is our epicentre. Instead of opening advanced design studios in the distant metropolises of North America and Asia, our designers come from all over the world to Porsche in Weissach in order to create the latest production sports cars and automotive visions at the heart of the brand. It was never sold in North America, but it's old enough now to be imported as grey market. One of the guys I race with has one. (He lives in the Seattle area.) Soon enough, a group of about 20 supercars passed by. That would be unusual in itself, but all of the cars were painted or wrapped in zany liveries. It made me think that they were part of a Gumball or Race Across America type rally. I was not wearing my glasses at the time, so I could not read any text on the cars. Those Delica vans are all over the place around here since they became 25 years old. Every granola-munchin' hippie who likes to hike, camp, bicycle, and ski (in other words, typical Colorado residents) has one.

And I immediately found one for sale on craigslist in Golden to prove my point: https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/denver-delica-l300-starwagon-special/7340286907.html

Okay, with less exaggeration, I've seen a few Delicas and a couple similar Toyotas as well in the last year or two.

Anyone know what the words Delica and Celica mean? I've always thought Toyota just made up words for cars, such as Celica and Camry and Cressida and Corolla (and more recently, Prius, Yaris, and Scion), but maybe those have meanings in other languages. I think they're just words designed to be easy to speak in many languages, such as the well-known example of Kodak.

I see Ferraris pretty often, but I don't know one from another unless it's a 308 like Magnum drove or a Testarossa. There's a dealership near my house that sells them and other expensive marques. Not far from this one is an Infiniti/Maserati/Lamborghini/McLaren dealership.

Here's a couple pictures from a recent bike ride on a Sunday when they were closed. Trivia: it is illegal to sell cars on Sundays in Colorado. Apparently the car dealers' lobby got that law passed many years ago so they could all have a day off once a week. I'm sure private sales occur but all dealerships are closed.

I was in California recently and saw a surprising number of Rolls Royces. Okay, it was maybe four or five, but that's more than I see in a few years around here. I noticed one turning in front of us at an intersection and saw that the RR logos in the center of the wheels do not rotate. They wobble a little but don't turn over. I looked for them on other RRs I saw and they all had that feature.

It reminded me of those "spinner" wheels that were all the rage ten or fifteen years ago...about the same time that clear rear taillight housings were in style for a couple years, if I remember correctly.

Some kind of wild, fire breathing Mazdaspeed 3 that tried to get me to race it on the highway. I passed it getting on the highway, then it caught up, got just in front of me in the next lane, and when there was a gap in traffic dropped into a lower gear and sat there waiting for me to accept the challenge. I just stayed at the same speed, and they eventually got tired of waiting and fired off like a rocket, including the sound, smoke, and flames.

Of course, I left England in 1963, and things may have changed since then.

Went to Julian outside of San Diego over the weekend and saw lots of people driving like dipshits up on the mountain roads in expensive machinery. The most notable one was a Lamborghini Aventador SV Roadster that was stuffed head-on into the side of the mountain after apparently illegally crossing the double yellow to pass people, losing it, and hitting a group of motorcyclists. Thankfully nobody died.

Speaking of Generals Lee, yesterday I saw a gorgeous '69 Charger in a reddish-orange color. It had a black vinyl top, an aftermarket pop-up glass sunroof (open, or I wouldn't have noticed), and old-school aftermarket wheels with painted centers that probably matched the car at one point but are now faded to a more pinkish color. It crossed in front of me at an intersection after I stopped for a red light. I rolled my window down to hear that glorious muscle car roar as it passed, but I couldn't hear a thing as it accelerated. What a shame. Called them out on the obvious poorly repaired damage and corrosion.
Have a good look at the underneath pics, especially the rear, see if you can spot it.
Thing that drew me to it, was the L/H tail light is the original, the centre garnish and R/H light are face lift ones.
Oh and the fact it'd been resprayed since arriving in the USA gave it away too.

Just hope I helped someone to not buy it.

The thing that looks like a long crack along the spare tire well? Other than that I'm not seeing much of concern, but I don't have any familiarity with rust repair methods. Looks like they may have painted over some surface rust on the diff cover recently, but I can't see obvious evidence of that on the subframe or suspension arms or anything. The pics are a little small for me to make out details.

Where the rear panel meets the boot/trunk floor, its all wavy and uneven. Should be a clean, straight panel.
Also the boot floor is far too new and shiny, from memory of my black S14, the paint was very sparse in there, showing more of a green/grey of the bare panel.
I also spotted a few rust spots around the front strut towers, which is a common place on these.
