Drove up the coast on PCH through Malibu today to go make an expensive excursion to get strawberries. Saw a BMW Isetta and a Porsche 918.

What variety of berries?

Tom Servo
July 11th, 2022, 09:58 PM
Not sure, really. Oxnard's known out here for their strawberries, and I think we're just coming up on the end of the season for them. The farm we usually buy them from just calls them "dark strawberries." They are definitely delicious though, and worth the trip. Doesn't hurt to make part of the drive on PCH along the coast, it's a pretty scenic drive, and you get to drive past the spot where that one Swedish guy managed to tear an Enzo in half all those years ago.

The other week as I bicycled past that garage near me, a Triumph TR3, I think, was waiting to turn behind me. But I can't find a picture really matching. I remember the radiator grill as larger and more distinctly semi-circular (flat side on the bottom) than any pictures I find of TR3's.

I saw at least 1 Model T-ish Ford driving around in a light rain. I had three sightings, all 5+ minutes apart in the same area.

As I was bicycling east on Hessen Strasse (west of Kitchener-Waterloo), I'm pretty sure I saw a dark blue E-type convertible come towards me and go by. The earlyish morning light, with shadows from trees, made it difficult to identify. When it was slightly further away I thought it might be a Corvette, but as it went by (rather quickly) it sure looked like an E-type Jaguar. Most cars along there are either pickup trucks or Amish buggies.

Pittsburgh has a really strong Cars and Coffee scene and they had a big meetup on Saturday. I was golfing at a course nearby and saw a bunch of fun stuff in traffic on the way there. The 'notable' one was a really nice '80s 300ZX with Nissan Fairlady Z badging and a Datsun license plate holder. Left hand drive though. I've always had a philosophy that I can really appreciate any car so long as it's well kept and clearly loved by its owner and this one fit right in.

Is it notable if I've seen this GT40 several times now at Cars & Coffee, but it's still a GT40? I can't remember what kind of replica/remake it is, as I presume the real deal would be worth millions and not just rocking up with randos every month.

:lol::up:

I think some of you may be surprised at what rolls into cars and coffee sometimes. There were all manner of outlandishly valuable hardware that would show up in Irvine when I lived there. The most memorable was a Jaguar D-Type. At the time, it was a ~$5 million automobile. Now, they're worth ~$20 million. Multiple Shelby Cobras would show up, signed by Carrol on the dash. I once saw an original GT40. One week, there was a Ferrari F40, F50, GTO and an Enzo parked side-by-side. Another week, there were six Challenge Stradales there at the same time. I told that story to Cheeto23, who worked at a Ferrari dealership at the time. He said, "Are you sure? Those are a pretty rare car." I offered to send him photo evidence, but he declined.

Yeah some C&C events have some pretty crazy stuff, particularly near areas of wealth. I once went to one in SoCal where Jay Leno showed up in a McLaren (P1 I think it was), but the biggest surprise to me was the freakin' Vector W8.

I've seen a handful of Ford Lightning's around Cincinnati since spotting my first one at trivia a few weeks ago. That one was driven a dealer franchise owner, I didn't notice if the others were 30 day tags or dealer plates.

The look like F-150s with the grill covered. Which is neat when you know/care what they are, but basically invisible otherwise.

My Three Sons has gone back to season 1 on the retro channel I watch.

Behind the closing credits are basically GM ads; shots of new GM products driving around.

The Corvair is featured fairly prominently in most episodes, and for the first episode, they had a shot of a Corvair Van, though somewhat obscured by credits of above average density.

That made me realize that the mascot/project van of my local bicycle shop is also a Corvair van...

Thursday as I was driving back from Grand Rapids, MI, near Gun Lake Casino I spotted a Robins Egg Blue Fisker Karma. The first thing that crossed my mind after I saw the car was that they must have some really good coke. Yesterday(Friday) as I was driving back from Fort Wayne, IN, I spotted a ragged out Chrysler Aspen Hybrid with some DIY business decals on it and the first thing that crossed my mind was how good the meth is that they have.

I was cycling down Northfield Drive, late last Saturday morning. Among few too many motor vehicles which passed me was a red, I'm pretty sure, Triumph Spitfire, with its black top up (temperature had been 4C when I started, though it was approaching 15 at the time). I realized, "Hey! That might be my pub friends Ed and Katherine! (whom I haven't seen since the first lockdown)". So I waved vigorously, but as they sped away at at least 40km/hr difference, they wouldn't really have been able to acknowledge me anyway. They didn't, as I imagined might happen, stop and wait in Conestogo. It might not have been them anyway; I think their Spitfire has a softer tail.

I was told today it is a 1967 Chevrolet Sportvan. By Lori (Andy was home sick).

Annoyingly there is some déjà vu. I think I previously asked them if it was a Corvair, and between that time a few years ago and now I not only forgot the answer, but also forgot (and recently relearned) that there even was such a thing as a Corvair van.

Was on a week and a half road trip to the east coast with my wife for her friend's wedding in Philadelphia and then a couple of days doing vacation stuff in Newport, RI. Notable sitings included 4 McLarens of various types on the jersey turnpike, a handful of modern Lambos and Ferraris, and honestly too many maseratis. The highlight however was a green Miura in downtown Newport. I almost shit my pants.

Saw a McLaren the other day. I am the first to admit that all their new models blend together for me and I can't tell any of them apart. This one looked notably smaller, like how an LMP is when you see it in real life vs. what you think it looks like, had a very large fixed wing, and a roof scoop. Also seemed like almost P1 style side scoops. Wish I'd got a picture, but I can't tell for the life of me which one it was. Definitely looked more track-focused than the ones I've seen so far, just because it looked so small.

I'm to the point where I am more happy to see well cared for older car than any of the new stuff. Most of the new super sporty cars are starting to look very similar to me.

I wonder if this is because we're getting older and therefore more nostalgic or perhaps news cars really are just no longer as inspiring? Perhaps a bit of both?

Take Honda for example, I like to old NSX than the new more advanced NSX. I do believe general consensus is that the original is the better of the two?

Likewise for Ferraris, my favorite seems to have stopped at 458 when they still have the high revving NA engine. Now, I don't know if most people think that's the better Ferrari..., but I think its fair to say that higher tech doesn't always translate into better ability to stir our souls...

I think the only new thing that intrigues me and hopefully I can get a chance to test drive someday is the Porsche Taycan. I wonder if they truly were able to preserve the spirit of driving a Porsche onto an EV... For a sedan, it's got cool looks too.

Anyway, I think car enthusiasts are probably able to tell how much heart and soul the designers poured into their creations.

Kchrpm

I'm fascinated by technology and have been known to love ridiculous looking things, so I'm still drawn in by new vehicles. My problem with nice new stuff that I see is often the owners rather than the machines themselves. The people with enough money to get the crazy cool new cars often seem like entitled douchebags to me. Older stuff, unless it's incredibly rare, is usually owned by someone that has a story and an emotional connection to it, not just someone that wanted a shiny thing to show off their crypto/finance bro/whatever gains.

Crazed_Insanity
December 12th, 2022, 09:15 PM
Anyway, yeah, whether new or old, I think 'emotional connection' is key, or stick, that stirs our hearts.

I would say it's some sort of replica....but the old school wheels and tires really make me think it's something old. But they only made 6 or 7 originals and no way is this a 7million dollar car. So I'm stumped. I don't know enough about all the replica companies to know what the differences.

Saw a black Lamborghini Aventador on the southern motorway (Dunedin) the other day. Gave me Countach vibes (from its role in The Cannonball Run movies), as it was black on black and looked really aggressive.

Also this year i've seen a red, black, silver and orange (four different cars) first and second gen Audi R8's around Dunedin.
Plus a black Gallardo quite a few times.
A red (!) 996/997 911 GT3 the other day near Roxburgh, Central Otago.
A Renault 5 Turbo near Wanaka, Central Otago, in the weekend - first time i've seen one outside of videogames.
A tan Hummer H1 near Wanaka.
Millions of US muscle cars (everyone seems to own them here) and a wide variety too
Lots of other Porches of all different types

Plus way too many others i've forgotten.

It's pretty low, it's the "village" just south of UCLA. The streets are overly built, but I think the speed limit is 25, maybe 30, and the area is very pedestrian friendly. Those streetside outside seating areas became very common during covid and most of them have stuck around.

Same in Denver. Some have clear plastic covers over them with zippered doors and windows for the cold weather. Most are on quieter side streets rather than busy main roads. I saw plenty of them in Manhattan last summer also.

Most Pittsburgh downtown streets are pretty narrow, particularly with the bike lanes. It's kind of annoying for pedestrians to have to navigate through a restaurant to get somewhere.

Last time Ash and I stopped in to see Carlo we ate in the street in Madison. Felt bad, the waitress fell down the stairs with our food.

George

So many possible jokes there...but she has my sympathy.

Being a server and having an outside, patio, or - heaven forbid - an upstairs or downstairs section is the kiss of death for that shift.

It's going on twenty years since I escaped the restaurant scene but a lot of it is hard to forget.

It was definitely something that was legalized during covid. For the longest time, even setting up anything outside at all was against the law, now they have these "parklets" pretty much all over the place.

There's a lot of talk of banning them again, but for the most part the restaurants are mad because they often spent a fair bit to build them and the patrons really like them, so we'll see how that all goes.

Putting seating in what was previously street parking spots was pretty popular here in Portland at the beginning of the pandemic, and so far I haven't seen any of it go away. There's a street near us that got completely closed and turned into an outdoor dining area for several restaurants on the street, and that also seems to be permanent now. We were just down there this weekend, we walked over with the dog and got some breakfast that we could eat outside with the dog.

It just doesn't make sense in a built up area to have two or three cars parking in a space that could seat 20 or 30 people. Up in Portland we're starting to get into the time of year that we have sunlight and nice temperatures quite late into the evening as well, which makes for pretty nice outdoor dining.

Hear, hear. I've loved having the outdoor dining spaces and have never felt like it ruined my ability to drive to any of these places when they're not close enough to bike or walk. Just a vastly better use of the space.

Chiming in and saying (IMO) that my Rivian is amazing, and it seems the company is putting their money into their product instead of back to themselves/stockholders. I consider that a good quality for an American company but... then again... I've never been a businessman.

I'll be giving it the first real test next week as I drive it all the way through Pl8ster's state to the end of the 95. Going to take the wife, (and her mom, and sister) to her grandfather's funeral. He lived a good, full 92 years of life, and for a country dentist was actually quite progressive, especially for that part of the country. Even installed geothermal cooling into his home, as well as a windmill for electricity that he loved to show off how much power he put back onto the grid. I think he would have enjoyed seeing and getting a ride in a Rivian.

To be fair, I was basing this on what apparently their burn rate is and that venture capital has essentially dried up over the past year and that, like a lot of start-ups, they're losing money on every truck they sell. Absolutely not a knock on the product itself, it's clearly quite popular.

JoeW
June 16th, 2023, 07:41 AM
You know when I first saw them on the MacGregor/Boorman ride through S and N America I thought they were full sized trucks. They looked bigger on TV. But in reality they are more of a mid sized truck. A couple SUVs spotted in my area too.

June 16th, 2023, 05:34 PM
Since we're talking about it I looked it up, and it seems that the problem is the static costs that don't go up as they sell more vehicles, so even though they're selling a lot and "losing" money on every vehicle, they just need to sell more to fix that.

The Cruisin' Cats were kicking out the jams with two Fender guitars and a Fender bass, just as it should be. This is a poor picture of them between songs, but they played classic car tunes by the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, and so forth. They played some Yardbirds and mentioned Jeff Beck's recent passing and how he was such a hot rod enthusiast.

Stumbled upon another car show today. I posted some pictures in my garage thread yesterday in which the car I was driving was somewhat of a participant, if from a distance. Thought I'd post these here since our car wasn't involved...but it was there. ;)

I owned two Beetles between 1984 and 1992. I used to buy Hot VWs magazines and others. Yet, never have I seen these venetian blinds that seem to be all the rage in the VW community these days. Roof racks were also practically non-existent back then. Nobody wanted anything to create more air resistance or extra weight. But, here they are.

You can see The Red Menace in the background here. My son was driving and his friend was with us too. We brought home some cinnamon rolls for the ladies and then us guys went out to eat burgers. While waiting for our chow, I used some sheets from their "make your own burger" pads and taught the boys the ancient art of paper football.

This guy thought it would be smart to spray-paint the VOLKSWAGEN badge on the engine lid red. I'm sorry, sir, but you are disqualified. That simply isn't allowed.

Here's my personal Best Of Show award winner. I've always hated Baja Bugs where they cut the frame in front and back and bob the fenders. Put on some big tires and a stock Beetle will go (almost) anywhere a ruined Baja Bug will go.

I looked inside and saw the ashtray open and full of cigarette butts. I couldn't tell if they were fresh or old leftovers, for that vintage touch. :p

Doesn't really count as a 'sighting' per se, but I watched the movie Pet Semetary: Bloodlines last night and was surprised to see the main character (it's a prequel that takes place in 1969 or so) driving a....Beaumont. A Canadian badge engineered Chevelle that was technically it's own marque.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/54/1967_Beaumont_Sport_Coupe_in_Burgundy_Poly%2C_Fron t_Left%2C_06-17-2022.jpg/1920px-1967_Beaumont_Sport_Coupe_in_Burgundy_Poly%2C_Fron t_Left%2C_06-17-2022.jpg

I looked in to getting a used, final 1997-2001 BB6 Prelude back in 2002. Insurance was obscene, even compared to a new WRX or GTI. I figured it was due to all the stolen Prelude engines, seats, and wheels ending up in/on Accords.

Sadly, most of the Preludes up here that weren't stolen/stripped, modded into oblivion, or otherwise wrecked have probably rusted away.

I was eyeing a red Del Sol last summer on craiglist...not that I have any time, money, or space for one. But maybe someday. The ad said something like "I'm the second owner. I'm an old man and I bought this car from another old man. It's in perfect condition" or something along those lines.

I like the old saying, "Buy the owner, not the car."

I was a huge fan of the mid-80s Prelude too! Wish I could've afforded one back in HS, but the base 70HP Civic hatchback with the MSRP of $7000 was all that I could afford! :D

I really don't see a lot of those older Hondas on the road here in the NW. Maybe more in SoCal, but they seem super rare... I think I can see more S2000s than those older Hondas. Yeah, most likely they're all stolen, striped for parts or rusted away...

Finding a 'pristine' one will probably cost you a lot of money.

I totally understand. I heard a rumor that the exterior styling prototype for what became the 5th gen was actually supposed to be the 4th gen but it got pushed back for some reason for the rounded one...maybe because that was more popular at the time?

It is interesting the extreme contrast of 80's styling where everything was sharp and angular to curved in the 90's

I didn’t embrace the round prelude either, but I didn’t hate it. Just thought it no longer looked like a prelude, but at least it looked sportier?

I was also particularly impressed by its space age looking interior, but looking at it now , it seems kinda dated, huh? ;) Still not bad looking though, except for the steering wheel. I hated the steering wheels of the 90s along with those annoying automatic seatbelts!

I got a nail in one of my tires while out of town a couple weekends ago. I discovered it early Sunday morning and also learned my favorite tire store chain, Discount Tire, is not open on Sundays. I ended up at an independent shop in Loveland, CO as soon as they opened at ten o'clock. It's the kind of place that sells (and leases, according to signs in the showroom) those huge 24" and 26" wheels that some guys put on pickup trucks along with ultra-low profile tires. As a middle-aged guy with a Honda Ridgeline, I got the feeling I was not their typical customer.

Anyway, this was parked inside. There was a wired remote control on the driver's seat that I assume controlled the height of the vehicle.

Honda designs certainly have improved and became more pleasing, at least to my eyes. Prologue is not bad, but I don't understand why Honda couldn't do a plugin hybrid. Also just received an email from Honda saying that if you buy or lease the new Prologue, for additionally peace of your mind, we'll give you a free 10day gas Honda rentals! For the long road trips I guess...

Anyway, like I said, wouldn't a plugin hybrid be able to answer that easily? I guess GM and Honda planned this when EV market was still hot. Personally I really like the Honda PHEV Clarity. Although it was ugly, but I really like the concept if Honda would give me a chance to buy one. (After my Clarity EV lease, Honda stop selling them.) So now I ended up with a Jeep PHEV. :p

I dropped by a car show at a church less than three miles from home this morning and thought you guys might enjoy some pictures. They were taking donations and selling raffle tickets and lunch and stuff like that.

I've probably told this before, but honestly, I thought it was a Ferrari the first time I saw it from the front 3/4 view such as the last-but-one picture above.
