Apparently after an 18 month fight, and only two days after his spectacular new album came out, cancer did what the cocaine, hot peppers, and milk diet couldn't.http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6836502/david-bowie-dies-at-age-69-after-battling-cancer?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link
I'm super bummed and in shock, I thought that Blackstar coming out so (relatively) soon after The Next Day heralded his return to full time music and maybe touring again. Was really looking forward to seeing him again.

As I was saying on the bookface, I've never had any interest whatsoever in his music, so I won't do the fake "he's-dead-now-so-I'm-suddenly-a-huge-fan" thing. But I will say I enjoyed the shit out of David Bowie as Nikola Tesla from The Prestige, and Jareth from Labyrinth.

I don't own any of his music but I certainly enjoyed any thing I heard from him. Especially songs Space Oddity, Let's Dance which featured Stevie Ray Vaughn on Guitar and helped Vaughn launch his career, Changes etc.

RIP Ziggy Stardust. :|

The guy was a legend. I'm not a huge fan of his music, but I'm a huge fan of his person. I'm sure the great beyond just grew a lot more interesting.

I'm a fan. Not an all-knowing obsessive who had every album and knew every tidbit of trivia, but a fan. His songs were fun to cover in bands and jam sessions.

A couple of favorites:

I'm also not going to try to pretend I was a big fan of his, but was still really saddened to hear of this. To me this is an even bigger deal than losing most musicians, like say, Michael Jackson, because I feel like very few people broke such new ground like Bowie did. I mean, ok, there are a lot of great musicians, but this really feels like we just lost a very great and unique mind that we're never going to have another one of.

Also, it's really amazing just how "on his own terms" he seems to have done this whole thing. I mean, we only find out now that he had cancer. I remember when the whole Steve Jobs cancer thing was going on. There were months or years of "Well, is he ok or not?" "I dunno, he doesn't look ok, but maybe." The cancer question really overshadowed the man himself for the last while I think.

With Bowie, wow, he just kept it under wraps the whole time, released an album to say goodbye, then promptly checked out. Very poignant. Although, I guess you could argue that he had the luxury of being reclusive if he wanted to, unlike someone who's running a major company.

I wasn't that big into his earlier stuff until I got older... but his album, Heathen, was something I played on repeat during a particularly tough time in my life, and my first live concert was one of his, and still one of the best experiences I've had in live music.

Between Michael Jackson, Steve Jobs, Robin Williams, and David Bowie.... I feel like I've lost a big chunk of 'stars' that I've enjoyed from my youth. I guess this is a sign I'm getting old.

I'm a fan of the first half of his career. Thought he 'Jumped the Shark' when he did Dancing In The Streets with Jagger.

Creative and unique, he will be missed.

RE: Space Oddity

Anyone else remember this oh-so-eighties song about Major Tom? It's not a cover, but rather what modern movie makers would call a reboot of the franchise.

I think I'd go with the Low cover portrait rather than Heroes, but I would sign that petition were I English.
