FOOTBALL!

How did you like your draft? Apparently the best thing the Bengals did was piss off the Steelers fans by getting the players they wanted.

This was probably my favorite set of moments from the draft: http://www.vikings.com/media-vault/videos/Mayock_Helps_Makes_Boehringers_Dream_Come_True/7763751b-09b9-4e4c-9c0c-ed9069319708

Bills' punter Colton Schmidt (UCDavis alum :D) was given a one-year contract extension in January. Various analysts seem pretty happy with that move--top 10 punter for minimum salary.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the Bears' offseason, including the draft. I think Floyd is a bit of a gamble at OLB due to being a lanky 6'4", 244 lbs. Hopefully he can add 10-15 lbs and keep his speed. If he can't he'll end up being a situational/3rd down rusher.

Given Zach Miller's injury history, and getting rid of Bennett, they could use another TE. They also need to start looking for Cutler's replacement given his age (33).

21Kid

So, besides his age, you'd keep him? :finger:

Packers got a new punter/specialist... I wonder what they will do with Masthay? Or how they will use Mortell...

I like this guy so far.

2015 Holder of the Year? CHECK.

Can defend stadium from drone attack via precision punting skills? CHECK.
Mortell, a Green Bay native, doesn’t care where he ends up, but the Packers would be a dream come true.Seems like they're going to throw down (http://espn.go.com/blog/green-bay-packers/post/_/id/29807/green-bay-native-peter-mortell-ready-to-clock-in-as-packers-punter). :rawk:
GREEN BAY, Wis. –
Peter Mortell's grandfather operated the game clock at Lambeau Field for more than 30 years. His father took over in 2000 and still has the job.

The Packers are looking for competition for veteran punter Tim Masthay and hope Mortell can provide it. He set a Minnesota record with a 44.0-yard-per-punt career average. Mortell further refined his skills this offseason by working out with former NFL punter Darren Bennett in San Diego.

Bills played their first preseason game last night...

We were already down 2 out of our top 4 OLBs, now we're down 3 out of 4 :|

Other than that, I really like our rookie class, they all showed flashes of season ready production. I just hope no more of them get hurt (lost the top two picks, one for the season, and one for 6-8 games) this year.

Also, we locked in Tyrod Taylor... kinda. The extension allows the team an out after this year, and then I think an out after year three, and another after 5? And for Tyrod, there's all sorts of incentives built into it. Basically a good contract for both sides, considering he's only started 14 games. But I'm still nervous about investing in any QB after such short successes, after the mess with Fitzpatrick.

I have not a clue what to expect this season... on paper we got worse in some areas, and better in others. Plus side is, this is the first time in about 4 years that the defense is playing in the same system two years in a row.

September 12th, 2016, 01:02 PM

Back in the 20's (ish) a team found out that if you sew straps onto the running back and throw him over the line you're guaranteed three yards. They had to outlaw it.

Oh man, what a shitshow. :smh:

Where to begin?? Probably front-and-center with #12 -- Rodgers continues his indecisive play from last season. Refuses to throw short, and this is with another good performance by his O-line! Lacy may have lost weight but he looks as big and slow as last season as well.

Cornerbacks? Canton is working on Bradford's bust RIGHT NOW based on how good they made him look. The Panthers are gonna rip him him open and huddle inside him for warmth next weekend but for this week he's a Vikings God.

The Packers are a team in need of some serious quarterback play. A-A-Ron needs to get his head screwed on straight and quick! #gopackgo

I found this article interesting: https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/nfl-ratings-plunge-could-spell-doom-for-traditional-tv/2016/10/14/a7a23dc2-915f-11e6-9c85-ac42097b8cc0_story.html

It dissects some of the excuses for the NFL ratings decline and puts them in perspective compared to past declines on election years, etc. The short of it is that the target demo just doesn't watch TV as much as the boomers did and this problem is only going to get worse as both generations age.

Found this interesting:

Long-term slides in ratings pose a financial minefield for the big TV networks, which have agreed to pay the league tens of billions of dollars to air NFL games through 2022.

The networks do not make enough ad revenue to fully cover those arrangements, according to an industry estimate provided by Magna. But they believe the promotional halo of having NFL games leading viewers into other programming makes the deals worth it. Falling viewership, however, could drive down ad revenue, making the networks’ calculations harder to defend, Hughes said.

It's stunning that the networks are actually using the NFL as a loss leader.

What I see happening, much like when the post office raises postage when people buy less postage, is the networks will keep adding more and more ads to the game until it becomes entirely unwatchable. I'm really curious to see which networks will be airing games in 2023. I wouldn't be shocked if NBC left entirely since primetime games are taking the biggest hit, and their broadcast already feels the most desperate of all of them (squeezing 30 second commercials into 30 second on-field timeouts).

I have no idea what to think about the Bills.

Two close losses at the beginning of the season, which were both a result of offensive lapses imo (defense wasn't great against the Jets, but the defense was also exhausted because we couldn't sustain drives)... then we beat up on 4 shitty teams... hopefully we beat Miami (as we should), and go into the rematch with the Brady-led Pats at 5-2. That'll be the real barometer.

Sunday night’s Colts-Texans game drew just 12.9 million viewers, a 38 percent drop from last year’s Week 6 Sunday night contest between the Patriots and Colts and a low enough mark to make it the least-watched Sunday Night Football game since 2011. But this isn’t a one-off concern; it’s becoming commonplace. Some of the dips are understandable and may have even been unavoidable: On September 26, for example, the Falcons-Saints Monday Night Football matchup aired opposite the first presidential debate and drew just 8 million people. October 10’s Bucs-Panthers game, however, wasn’t up against any debate, yet it was the worst-ever Week 5 Monday-night game airing on ESPN.

Mulvihill said that in this changing world, he’s found himself wondering what the postelection ratings will look like. “The election is over after Week 9,” he said. “We have a gigantic game on Week 10, Dallas-Pittsburgh. Are we going to see the type of number for Dallas-Pittsburgh that we would have expected if this was a normal year?”
He’s not so sure: “I don’t know that we will. I think we’ll see some normalization, I think we will see things get back to what we expect, but does it all snap back to what we consider normal in a week? Is it going to be ‘People vote on a Tuesday then watch football on a Sunday’? I don’t know if it’s that much of a straight line.”
For the first time in a long time, the NFL is nervously waiting to find out.

It's Happening!

Phil_SS

The Dallas-Pittsburgh will draw very well. America's Team vs Steelers Nation.

That being said. I think Goodell and his no fun league have really killed the excitement of the league. Nobody gives a fuck if Antonio Brown is dancing after a TD or that Martavis Bryant smokes pot. I could care less. If they are doing crimes against other people then yes they shouldn't be playing but otherwise, stop fucking with my fun.

And I really don't give a shit how much air is/was in the footballs Tom Brady was throwing.

And I'm still not going back to cable no matter what they do.

Aaron Rodgers calls out teammates for lack of energy (http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/green-bay-packers-aaron-rodgers-colts-angry-energy-110716).

I'm surprised you don't see more of this (https://cdn-e1.streamable.com/video/mp4-mobile/6fd0.mp4?token=1479742627_9d2320573b49fba2b823fd40 2f5e6cda47fe8017). It happens in basketball all the time.
New Orleans has the ball 13 yards out from a touchdown. There are seven seconds left in the first half, and the Saints have one timeout remaining. They have time for one shot at a touchdown before they have to kick a field goal.

So what do the 49ers do? They intentionally hold all of the Saints receivers, Brees has to spike the ball and six seconds run of the clock, preventing the Saints from taking a shot at a touchdown because a penalty call does not put time back on the clock.

What SF did to NO

Playing the rules to prevent a score by holding the entire offense and forcing a run off of the clock.

It takes away offensive position of the saints, who ultimately were penalized from the opposing team breaking the rules.

It's a strategic play. They're taking a penalty for it. I don't see the issue.

Kchrpm
November 8th, 2016, 07:31 AM
Intentional fouling is so damn annoying. The NBA has been trying to figure out if there's a way to minimize it, because, as you said, the rules as they exist promote it.

But the NFL is wondering why their ratings are going down. The NBA and MLB dream of the kind of ratings that the NFL has been getting, so saying that the other leagues do it already is not really a justification.

21Kid

Kchrpm
November 8th, 2016, 07:44 AM
I don't think it's that simple, no. It's part of a larger problem. What the biggest factors are, I don't know. Some are saying that the rookie pay limits have made young players more affordable, and therefore veterans are being replaced more often with young players who aren't as good but are far cheaper. That is leading to sloppier play, which is leading to a sloppier product, etc.

But is that really why people aren't watching as much? I don't know.

I know, I'm just saying that I don't know if I agree with him or not. I don't know what it is. Like, Belicheck and the Patriots are praised for making smart moves like that. And the affect it has on an NFL game is much smaller than in NBA games, where intentional fouls happen en masse and make 1 minute of game time take 5-10 minutes of incredibly boring real time.

Godson
November 8th, 2016, 08:10 AM

And that is something I hated about basketball. It drags out the time and doesn't allow the teams to actually play the game.

An intentional walk isn't a penalty. It's a calculated risk.

In water polo there is a rule in which you don't take away the advantage from the team with the ball for the sake of a foul. For example, if I have a fast break and am driving to the goal for a shot and one of my teammates is fouled on our defensive side of the pool, there is no foul. Because the ball would then need to be placed to the spot of the foul, taking away the advantage I had rightfully earned.

21Kid
November 8th, 2016, 08:35 AM
True. It does drag out in Basketball. And rarely has any actual effect on the outcome.

All sports should try to be like water polo. Isn't that rule the same with basketball though? You have to foul the person with the ball?

It's not like it happens in football very often, if ever. I can't remember the last time I saw an intentional foul. I don't think that is the cause of their declining viewership.

Personally, I think it's just because they are making is so complicated to watch, and there are so many different things to watch now. Everyone used to watch football on Sundays, because there was nothing else on, before the advent of 200+ cable channels.

And with games being played on specific channels that you don't have access to, it makes it difficult to stay interested.
I ran into that this last weekend with the Packers game. It was CBS's fault though, not the NFLs. They broadcase on a VHF channel here. And their online subscription "CBS All-Access" doesn't include NFL games. So, without a cable subscription or Season Pass, I have no way of watching it.

Same thing with Thursday night games. I'm not buying a cable subscription to watch the NFL Network. Otherwise it's randomly on CBS or NBC, if you have the time patience to figure it out (https://nflcommunications.com/Pages/2016-'Thursday-Night-Football'-Broadcast-Schedule-Announced.aspx).

Multiply that times multiple games and years, and peoples interest in something they rarely are able to watch will wane. They will find something else to watch or do. Just like I did on Sunday.

Hockey goes one step further: penalty is committed, the play does not stop until the infracting team gains control of the puck. Then the play is stopped and the penalty called (unless a goal is scored, then it's just a goal and the penalty is washed out)
Basketball should be able to implement something like that (and offer less time-outs, but that would be like NASCAR not having a caution for a harmless spin [cuts out on your commercial / ad revenue])

so .... how about them Cowboys

Freude am Fahren

The only way to fix it in basketball would be to say any foul in the last minute or two, the fouled team retains possession after free throws. But that kinds sucks for unintentional fouls. BTW, that is the rule if you foul away from the ball right now, I think.

Absolutely. Belichick's "system" is one-part cult of personality (The Hoodie) and one-part genderfluid identity  -- are they an air-assault team? Yet they power rush with the best of 'em. West Coast offense? They can do it all.

It only works because The Hoodie is the best in the business at coaching-up players and coaches beneath him. His assistant coaches have been poached consistently over the past decade yet the Patriots still win. He *sees* football like a lot of gurus have in the past but what's most notable is that he's able to communicate what he sees.

Now Tom Brady wants to play for at least five more years, maybe 6-7. I highly doubt Belichick is gonna stay in the game longer than that, ergo we'll never really know (unless Brady leaves sooner due to injury or poor play) if it was the Coach or the QB... ;) #jk

My analysis of the situation (since you assumed I was making one) is simply that ESPN reported the extension when it was leaked and that it had been signed months prior. N.F.L. Owners Pave Way for Chargers and Raiders to Move (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/14/sports/football/raiders-chargers-move-nfl-owners.html?_r=0)

IRVING, Tex. — N.F.L. (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/n/national_football_league/index.html?inline=nyt-org) owners on Wednesday showed signs of grudging support for allowing the San Diego Chargers (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/sports/profootball/nationalfootballleague/sandiegochargers/index.html?inline=nyt-org) to move to Los Angeles and the Oakland Raiders (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/sports/profootball/nationalfootballleague/oaklandraiders/index.html?inline=nyt-org) to leave for Las Vegas, with plans for stadiums in the teams’ current cities having all but vanished.

The only thing left is for the Chargers to decide next month whether to exercise their option to leave for Los Angeles and for the Raiders to submit a formal proposal to relocate to Las Vegas, where lawmakers have promised to contribute $750 million (https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/16/sports/football/oakland-raiders-las-vegas-move.html) toward a stadium.

Spanos has been unhappy with Qualcomm Stadium, one of the oldest stadiums in the league. A ballot measure that would have let the Chargers build a stadium in downtown San Diego with hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer money was soundly defeated in November.
Well NFL Disney World is gonna be an 80,000 seat monster for the L.A. Rams (http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/19/architecture/new-nfl-stadium-los-angeles/), they'd undoubtedly be fine with housing a 2nd team there, too (with the Raiders as a fall-back 2nd team option).

:D/:(

My team at work pitched in for a Xmas gift to send me (& the missus) to the Bears v Packers game this Sunday. But, it's going to be 0/-15F. I don't know if I can physically stay outside for 4+ hrs in negative temperature. I have bad circulation in my hands and feet, and they are usually freezing by the time I get to work. (35 minutes)

I was going to go to that game, but it fell through. I was planning to wear my down snowboarding jacket and snowboarding pants. Also, I could park for free in the 1st District police station lot. And have a box of hand warmers I got from Costco.

Many socks, bring cardboard to stand on. Good boots.

Cardboard?

I'd probably bring a blanket to sit on. LOL

A basket full of activated hand warmers?

Not sure how much security would like it, but they make hunting jackets that use the same lithium ion batteries that they use in cordless drills and trimmers and such. They stay nice and toasty for a bit.

Cardboard give your feet a barrier from the concrete. Helps a ton.

Yep. Thermal barrier. You'd be amazed how fast your feet/shoes soak up frozen from cold ass concrete. I've never been to an NFL game to experience this directly, but I have worked in the field in the dead of winter, and it's bullshit.

If you don't take cardboard, make sure not to stub your toe at half time.

Have you ever seen that video of a rose dipped in liquid nitrogen?

Well considering the absolute shellacking the Bears are giving the Packers (yardage-wise, at least), you probably made the best choice. #gopackgo

Seriously, Barkley probably already has 300 yards... :smh:

Would have been nice to continue the hot streak and this was a very winnable game. Too bad.

I love you Tyler, but the Chiefs are perennial pretenders. They always have some goofy super season and then blow the end game out of their asses.

They're the Bengals with actual potential.

And Jamal Charles is over, has been for a while.

Godson
December 18th, 2016, 06:47 PM
Jamaal Charles is done. I have no idea why these dumb fucks think he will be majorly productive. We continue to be better without him. Trade his ass off

I bring it up mainly because I wanted to see what you'd say; on my other forum I'm known as the guy that irrationally hates Jamal Charles because I just can't see how great he is, even at this stage in his career. Nice to know you're not wearing the rose colored glasses. ;)

I just know him as that guy that let me down in FF for like 2-3 straight seasons, and then he hasn't played since. heh.

As big a day as Ty Montgomery had (16 carries, 162 yards, 2 TDs), I am still more excited by Christine Michael (4 carries, 45 yards, 1 TD).

There's more to this than just me being a contrarian-as-usual: so far every time I've seen Michael with the ball, he just passes the eye-test. Something about his running, he's just a big-league superstar 'back! ;) Put me on the bandwagon (at least until either the fumbles and/or the primadonna shows up)! :rawk: #gopackgo

There is a guy on my other board that evaluates hockey talent at a professional level, he also dabbles in football as an aside. He is super high on Michael and can't figure out why he keeps getting cut; he figures he is either really dumb and can't grasp the playbook or he has an attitude problem. It's certainly not on-field talent holding him back.

novicius
December 19th, 2016, 07:47 AM
His vision is really good, his body looks very natural running the ball -- and by the Gods that burst!! He absolutely dusts Montgomery in acceleration, it's no contest.

I've read that he had attitude issues at Seattle & Dallas; considering his award-winning All-Everything résumé from the college level on down, hopefully he's been bounced around the league enough to get his pride hammered into the shape it needs to be in order to succeed at the Pro level. #fingerscrossed
