I don’t understand how come there were so many drivers losing control going into the pit. Seemed way more than usual? Newly paved slippery surface or indicative of skills of drivers?

Also, I guess Bottas had it good. I’d rather have a stuck machined nut than losing a freaking wheel going 200mph!!!

Anyway, I only saw the 5 minute race highlights! Not sure if I could sit thru the entire 500 miles even if it is shown in US time zone. :p

I've been watching the half-hour length race recaps posted a few days after each race on YouTube. Today I sat down to soak up the two races from the Detroit Grand Prix, and they have turned it up a notch! This is vintage IndyCar racing of the sort that I grew up with :D

The general consensus has been that drivers are slightly slower at ovals after they have their first big accident at one, but, um, I'm not exactly sure how that works in Romain's specific situation.

Grosjean was passing around the outside in the dirt at St Louis a few weeks ago. I think he has cags big enough to deal with ovals.

I honestly thought he was running away with the rookie of the year trophy but it turns out McLaughlin has more points than Grosjean, and that’s all because Grosjean hasn’t done all of the ovals this year. Sadly it’s not a reflection of the true performance of the two drivers.

Right, the adage isn't that they're scared of the ovals before their first wreck, it's that they're scared afterwards. Drivers were a little bit slower and less aggressive after their first wreck than before. But I usually heard it said about Indianapolis, which is about 60 mph faster average speed than St. Louis.

Yes, I was! The old adage of "people are slower at Indy after they realize how much it hurts to crash there" doesn't necessarily take into account that the driver has nearly been burned alive in a fluke accident at 140 mph as they pierced steel armco. I don't know how that changes it. Very different animals, that wreck and the typical one at Indy, but the man *has* been on death's doorstep.

(Keep in mind this isn't a dig by the people who parrot this saying at particular drivers being slow because they're scared, because *everyone* that goes fast at Indy for long enough has a big wreck, so everyone ends up having that level of fear/respect on their way to whatever level of success they have there)

I never though Grosjean had any fear. His early wrecking ball seasons of F1 prove that. But he's a great example of maturing as a driver.

That and Indy cars seem to reward a bit of argy-bargy much more than F1, which suits him.

Colton Herta is fast. Really fast. He's been mentioned as a potential F1 graduate on numerous occasions, and would have definitely been in the squad if Andretti's F1 project was able to get off the ground.

But I think his biggest problem is himself right now. He's trying too hard to finish high, rather than making decisions that benefit him in the long term. Erratic driving, shitty collisions, silly mistakes. He needs to slow himself down a bit, and maybe next year he will be a championship contender. He is very exciting to watch though!

For now, the championship is between Alex Palou, Will Power, and Marcus Ericsson. The first two have been there and done that, so they know how to convert consistency into a championship. I'd dearly love to see Ericsson get the title this year, as it will be a great story of how he got shat out the bottom end of F1 and found success in IndyCar.

I dunno. Rossi was the Next Big Thing when he won the 100th Indy 500 but hasn't done a lot since then.

Rossi has signed with a different team for next year, and has started being more aggressive around his current teammates, including the below move which he later brushed off as no big deal, just a normal racing move with no one at fault.

The presumption is that he is angry about getting replaced at Andretti and having to go elsewhere, but his personality is that of pretending to be cool and relaxed while actually hiding really strong emotions.

I've been catching up on IndyCar and putting races on while at work. Just want to laugh at Jimmie Johnson for being stuck in the gravel on lap 1 at Road America. At least he's not the focal point of every broadcast anymore.

What I've heard about Johnson is a case of performance anxiety.

I wonder what will last longer, his star power effect on a subset of sponsors and fans, or his willingness to be terrible. I don't expect him to ever not be terrible, but Hiro Matsushita was always terrible as well and just kept going since the checks weren't going to stop.

The conclusion to the IndyCar series was pretty good, but the last two races were kind of dull affairs compared to some gems earlier this season. Nashville, Iowa 1&2, Road America, Texas and St. Petersburg come to mind. Absolute rippers.

That doesn't take the gloss off IndyCar's return to being the best open-wheel category on the planet. Exciting races, records broken, a strong battle for the title, and new contenders starting to make themselves known. I say we should all watch this space again, as we did in the 90s. It has regained focus, and has something to build from.

They’re probably allowed to do it because the chevrons aren’t the exact same shape (they appear to have a rounded apex) and it doesn’t look like they have gone with dayglo red, instead using papaya orange.

I still don't like current indycar look. Current F-1 cars look better, but just wish they can be smaller.

I just watched the video Keith posted on Facebook of Detroit downtown practice 1. They switched out Belle Isle for this? It is by far the bumpiest street circuit I have seen in maybe 20 years.

I’m sure the drivers will get themselves sorted, and once the track rubbers in more it will be better to drive. I’m keen to see how the race pans out or if it’s a smash fest.

But hey, Mr Penske, if you’re wanting a new/old street circuit which is close to town and is very popular among drivers and spectators alike, there’s a perfectly good one not far from me which I am sure would welcome you with open arms.

The track is so thin in places and right angle corners are never great for race cars. I can foresee a red flag for a blocked track at some point in the race. O'Ward needs to keep his nose clean and take any points he can get after his Indy DNF.

The 53-year-old managed four solid laps before pulling into pit lane to catch his breath.

"It wasn't very fast, but I was able to push some corners hard enough to really feel the car," Bryan said. "Frankly, I'm not in good enough shape. It's more physical than I could extract out of the car.

"The limit, the limit right now for me, was me. But I was able to feel it and remember it and all those memories and feelings came rushing back for me."


"I didn't really have any expectations going into it, but I blew them away," Colton said. "Today, it was the first time I've heard these engines fire up. The first time I've ever seen a CART car run.

"Sometimes you get guys that run historics and whatnot, but this is a proper-prepared car and I was driving it to the best of my abilities. It was really cool to be able to get a chance to do that. You don't usually get to do that with some of these historic cars."
