Realistic things I hope to see:
- Forza 7 including more than just graphical improvements and/or VR; to be specific, more PC sim like modes/features (free practice, race weekends, save-able lobby settings) and day/night transitions
- Super Mario Odyssey demo
- Animal Crossing game announced for Switch
- Zelda second DLC details/trailer

Unrealistic things I hope to see:
- Several announcements/demos of major third party Switch titles, including a racing game with NFS or higher levels of realism
- Specific vehicles in Forza 7 (2018 IndyCar, C7 Grand Sport)
- Online driver swaps in Forza 7
- 3D Metroid game announced for Switch
- Pilotwings game announced for Switch
- Splinter Cell game announced for XB/PS/PC/NS (hahaha just kidding, that's more than just unrealistic)

Activision has stated the Destiny 2 beta calendar will be announced at E3.

My hope is that the early beta for preorders will start the 5th of July and then the public beta will start the 7th and run though the 9th or 10th. They could also do a GR:W style beta calendar where the closed beta is one weekend and the open is a couple weeks later.

I just want to play it before I go on vacation. :)

For Kchrpm's first item, if they:

a) Got Forza 7 to work right on Windows 10 (FH3 still has constant problems)
b) Made it work well with my G27 and Fanatec pedals
c) Added Rift support

I would be a happy, happy man. As much as I love things like iRacing, I wouldn't mind a little bit more arcade-y sim to just have fun in.

I wanna know more about Final Fantasy 7 remake. I had hopes for Pokemon on Switch, but it seems like they aren't going there yet. Other than that, BotW DLC 2 details would be cool... and I'm interested in the Scorpio, mostly because I want a UHD player :|

Edit: Also, god damn a new PilotWings game would be awesome, good call Keith

Wave Race 64 was so damn good. And there was a Pilotwings game on 3DS called Pilotwings Resort, so the series isn't dead. Nintendo just doesn't seem to like giving people what they want unless it's a new Zelda or Mario. See: Metroid.

Jason, you mean you want a 4K BluRay player? Xbone S does that, in case you didn't know.

I do know that, I just think it's kinda silly to replace my existing Xbone with the same thing+UHD, might as well get some graphics boost for the extra $100 or whatever it's going to be.

EA is first cab off the rank, hosting a not-E3 show before the real E3 starts.

FIFA 18, Madden 18 and NBA Live 18 were detailed. You could probably guess what those games are about. The Switch version of FIFA 18 will not be the same game as that found on PS4 or Xbone.

Battlefront II trailer, showing off multiplayer that mixes up characters and scenery from the three different movie eras. I spot lots of Naboo, as well as Starkiller Base, Tatooine and Takodana. For this game, all multiplayer DLC will be free! This means no more fragmenting of the player base once new content comes out. This is a really good announcement, especially that last time around I pretty much stopped playing once the first new maps went up for sale.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q51LZ2HpbE

There was a leak of some multiplayer gameplay footage yesterday. It's a bit headache-inducing and chaotic, but that's multiplayer for you. It's never going to look as organised as the staged footage in the trailer is. Note the battles between Darth Maul, Rey and Boba Fett.

https://vimeo.com/221073225

Bioware has a new game, it is called Anthem. There is a teaser trailer, and it looks like the game mixes 1995's favourite keyword (post-apocalyptic) with 2005's favourite keyword (open-world) and 2015's favourite keyword (survival). Could be interesting. We'll know more at the Xbox press event.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi0Uq7QmKm4

Finally, an 'Originals' title from EA. It's like they're trying to run a Netflix-style service with a name like that. But anyway, the game looks very intriguing. It's called A Way Out and it's co-op only. You and a friend play as a pair of brothers who are trying to escape from prison.

But uh.... I'm a big fan of Janina Gavankar. She was awesome.

They said it's actually smaller than the S, the smallest XBox ever.

Forza 7 looks pretty, has dynamic weather (or at least the amount of rain can change), Mugello's back, and the trailer showed driver changes but that might have been a cut scene only thing.

This is apparently a 5 minute race, I haven't watched yet.

https://www.theverge.com/games/2017/6/11/15770948/e3-2017-forza-motorsport-7-scorpio-play-story

That might sound like a strange amount of attention spent on something you won’t see much of while you’re racing. But for a good chunk of Forza Motorsport 7, you actually will see your driver. Turn 10 has completely revamped its menu system to put an emphasis on showing off these characters. For example, the pre-race screen that shows up before you start a multiplayer race is now fashioned more like a loadout screen in a shooting game. There are menu options on the left, and your character stands swaying on the right, as if she’s itching to hop in and drive.

Characters will also show up at the ends of races, podium-style, with the winner front and center looking proud, and the third-place finisher turned slightly away from the camera as if they’re already plotting revenge. Your character’s look will even now represent you when you show up in friends’ games as “drivatars,” a feature introduced back in Forza 5.

Players will be able to choose between everything from real race suits with HANS devices, to old-timey outfits with leather helmets, to some even goofier additions from pop culture. (Expect a lot of “era-specific inside jokes,” Lee laughs. “There's a lot of middle-aged people that work here.”) With Forza featuring real racing series like IndyCar and NASCAR, you can also expect to see some more iconic suits as well, set to be announced later this summer.

So is the XBOX (X Box One X, see what they did there ) the new gen, or just a third iteration of the XBOne? I'm confused by what I'm able to see at work (most gaming sites are blocked).

Either way, what does it offer over the current box?

Kchrpm
June 11th, 2017, 05:16 PM
Third iteration, sort of. All three iterations play the same games, but the X will play them in 4K/60 FPS (if they're designed to take advantage of its power).

dodint
June 11th, 2017, 05:40 PM
Forza 7 may pull me over to XBox if there is enough presence in our community. Fuck PD and the demo they still haven't finished for the PS4.

Will Forza 7 allow PC users to join the same lobby as console players?

Kchrpm
June 11th, 2017, 06:03 PM
I don't know. They have talked about cross-play before, but they did not specifically mention it today for any game other than Minecraft.

Rare White Ape
June 11th, 2017, 06:19 PM
Forza Horizon 3 has cross play between PC and Xbox, and it's one of MS's key features for their UWA thing they've got going, so count on it being a part of FM7.

The Xbone X will be the same deal as PS4 Pro but with a fair bit more grunt. Plays all Xbone games, and all Xbones play games designed to take advantage of the X's power, just with lower fidelity. It's not the next gen, but a mid-gen iteration, similar to how Apple's iOS devices exist in their ecosystem without any defined jumps in hardware and software compatibility, and slowly drop support for the oldest devices as technology marches on.

Judging by the amount of effort and power that they've put into the X, you might expect that this will be the last defined console generation that Microsoft and Sony give us.

I saw some GT Sport game play, there was something that just felt off about it. track looked too narrow and there wasn't much sense of speed while driving nor in the camera shots.

It's not a system seller any more. Kind of thrown into the B-list for Sony. It's unfortunate, but also brought upon by Polyphony themselves with their constant delays.

Microsoft still pushes Forza pretty hard, but they're still marketing super dooper weather effects like it's 2007 all over again. The two franchises aren't pushing each other along like they were back then.

What about multiplayer and online features? Well... “Since this is the Nintendo Switch and it does have two controllers, it’s very easy for you to imagine handing it to another person,” said Yoshiaki Koizumi. “So there’s probably something you’ll hear about multiplayer. But the timing is not quite there so I hope you’re able to wait just a little bit longer to hear about that. And then as for network features, since this is something the hardware is capable of, there might be something you’ll hear about there as well, and I hope you’ll look forward to it.”

Anthem definitely looks cool but unless it's got a truly immersive game map with armored enclaves, shanty towns and campsites with NPCs (really ala' Fallout, GTA V or even Witcher III's segregated map), I doubt I'd buy it. Or if the main armored city is *deep* with lots of narratively actionable nooks and crannies. :D

Basically I'm interested in the game worlds rather than the action at this point. Can I collect things in-game, combine and craft them? Do I get my own house/ship? Can I build said house/ship? Etc. It's not enough to say "look at this lush jungle, you can kill things like Iron Man!"

I haven't seen enough yet and for flying around and shooting in an unchanging sterile environment I've already got Destiny (and Titanfall for that matter).

::

SW: Battlefront 2 looks to be the real SW: Battlefront replacement.

Some of Darth Maul's whirling blender moves seemed a touch wonky tho' (turning to face targets magically mid-animation but not actually animating any pivot step, for example; very minor quibble) but the eye-candy should be top notch. Also the players + bots action should provide enough fodder for everybody.

::

Skull & Bones has me really interested -- I do love me some tactical warfare games (on Easy difficulty :finger: ) and this incorporates some amazing fluff animations accompanying the basic view-changes associated with war games of this type, which I'm absolutely smitten by.

Honestly, it's how all big capital ship combat should be, whether it's pirates, WWII or Star Trek: show me the crew reacting to my commands, not just a toy ship bobbing along! I'm definitely in a niche market here but that vid is full-on amazing to me.

::

Other than that Red Dead Redemption 2, Destiny 2, the next GTA and maybe the next FH game are about it for my time/interest.

I thought there were bots at first in the gameplay, but I wasn't sure if it was that or the players were all just given placeholder names of Droid 1, Droid 2, etc for the demo units. Did you see that bots were confirmed? My biggest problem with the beta was that, since everyone was human, it was mostly just spawn-die-spawn-die-spawn-die, you never got that feeling of being a bad-ass that came from mowing down bots in-between the real battles with human players.

Splatoon 2 shows its qualities as a potential e-sport: http://compete.kotaku.com/splatoon-2s-competitive-scene-has-a-strong-showing-duri-1796076705

Splatoon 2 nails the spectator experience, allowing the camera to follow individual players, pull out for a free-floating third-person camera or go omniscient for a map overview. The screen is mostly clutter-free, outside of busier moments in the match, and icons at the top help provide quick references when a super move is used or a player is respawning.

Compared to most games, Splatoon 2 can seem almost frantic—players are constantly moving, ducking and diving into ink puddles, with “splats” (the Nintendo version of kills) happening fast. What results is a sense of energy and intensity from each match, as a game can come down the wire, with teams desperately trying to ink territory and stay alive.

Where Splatoon 2 shines is in its ability to visibly portray spacing and map control. Concepts like those often seem ethereal to new spectators. It’s hard to explain to someone the control that a team can exert over a League or Dota map without physically standing there, or reading the distance between characters in a fighting game. Splatoon has its ink, a visible representation of a team’s presence on the field. It’s easy to understand that when there’s more purple ink than green, the purple team is probably winning.

Forza 7 Adjudication System

https://ar12gaming.com/articles/forza-7-adjudication

In multiplayer, the game will "take you down" via penalties, like time added to their lap and/or race time, if you corner cut or crash into others. Wasn't seen in action, so it may not be any different in practice than the dirty lap system they have now, except in competitive/e-sports scenarios.

Other info from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-nRJ2oUWiQ

- Rainy weather will not be available in areas that don't get rain in the real world (Dubai is given as the example)
- There is no animated pit crew in the E3 demo, unlike the trailer video. You will see people walking around, like in Forza 6, maybe during the race, but that's it.
- Every fan requested wheel, including PS4 wheels will work on XBox One (I'm skeptical, he might have misinterpreted them saying they'll work on PC
- Auction House is back
- No word yet on gifting

Career Mode
- You won't start off in super slow cars, examples given are NASCAR and Trophy Truck.
- The only way to get certain cars is from career mode (7 "Cups" each have unique rewards)

Edit: This Reddit post has a nice compilation of available info: https://www.reddit.com/r/forza/comments/6gp30e/everything_you_need_to_know_about_forza/

Forza Driver’s Cup, our new campaign mode. We’ve reimagined our campaign to allow players to tailor their progression as they see fit. There are six major championships to compete in and each series features a huge variety of cars and classes to compete in, highlighting the massive car list that is a cornerstone of Forza 7. You can race NASCAR vehicles, trophy trucks, pre-war cars, American muscle, exotic supercars, JDM classics, the list goes on and on. “I’m changing the time,” Ancel said as he then zoomed out so that the camera pulled back from the atmosphere into outer space. Many games have day/night cycles, but in this demo, “Changing the time” meant actually making the planet rotate on its axis as it moved around a star, causing the light from the star to hit the surface differently. “There is a universal simulation,” he said. “There are galaxies. It’s not just changing the color of the sun. Everything is rotating.”

“When you see a sunset in Beyond Good and Evil 2, that’s a real sunset,” producer Guillaume Brunier added. “It’s not just some lights our artists put there.”

The upcoming simulation racer has a slated install size of 100GB and will only get bigger from there as new free and paid-for DLC content is added.

As MSPowerUser points out (https://mspoweruser.com/forza-motorsport-7-stands-around-100-gb/), unless some other game comes along before its release, the upcoming Forza will be the biggest Xbox One game ever at launch. Is F7 a step towards a greater effort at sim than arcade? I was under the impression that Forza started as something closer to PGR and has been edging more sim-like over the iterations. But I've never played it so I have no actual clue.

My spectrum of sim to arcade looks something like this: iRacing/rFactor, Project Cars, Gran Turismo (any/all), Late Forzas, Early Forzas, PGR/Midnight Club, Ridge Racer, NFS.

Kchrpm
June 15th, 2017, 10:31 AM
Physics wise it's been a bit like Gran Turismo. It started off as quite realistic for the time, but looking back it doesn't seem so. It wasn't a PGR-like game at any point, but it did realism in a different way than GT so it felt quite different: Gran Turismo (in all the iterations I've driven) poorly modeled power-induced oversteer, and Forza has always included it in a realistic (if exaggerated) way. If you have the standpoint that Gran Turismo is the baseline, then swapping the massive and consistent understeer of GT for the tail-happy nature of powerful RWD cars in Forza, I could see where that impression comes from.

Also, likely based on the popularity of PGR2 at the time, Forza has included optional UI elements where you earned extra credit/points for driving feats, from taking the right line, to getting a pass, to drifting. In some of the games there's actually an optional drift point UI, and drift challenges in the single player mode.

TLDR: Forza has always been similar to concurrent GT games in the realism of their physics, but have more properly modeled power-induced oversteer. That combined with some UI elements that were similar to PGR could give the impression that it was an arcade-y game.

Super Mario Odyssey Update: Co-op!

https://www.polygon.com/e3/2017/6/15/15811558/super-mario-odyssey-co-op-cappy

The second player controls Cappy

During the third day of E3 live streams, the team at Nintendo confirmed that Super Mario Odyssey will feature local co-op.

When the feature was demoed during Nintendo’s Treehouse stream, game director Kenta Motokura said he was inspired to add this feature in the game because the Nintendo Switch natively features two controllers out of the box.

In this two player mode, you’ll notice that Mario’s hat, Cappy, floats above his head when this mode is active. When co-op mode is being used, a prompt appears on screen explaining the different commands between Mario and Cappy.

Mario still maintains his traditional running and jumping moves, as well as controlling the camera, but he no longer controls Cappy — although they did tease that he could still control Cappy somehow, but it was not shown on the stream. Players controlling Cappy can fly around and perform attacks, as well as control the camera.

During the live demo, Nintendo showed off how instrumental Cappy can be in performing fast actions that Mario can’t do, for instance, grabbing scattered music notes that quickly disappear to solve a puzzle.

Cappy is also invincible, so playing as him is perfect for players who want a stress-free play session without the fear of getting hurt. Nintendo also added a few puzzles that are helped by the teamwork, such as situations where Mario needs to hold an item but also needs Cappy to do something.

I agree with Keith's assessment about Forza. And I would say that Forza 6 is every bit the equal of Project Cars from a physics perspective.

And one thing that the modern Forza games have in spades over GT is the audio. It's not even close.

Back when I always had a steering wheel setup - curse you adulthood - I found FM2 to be far better than GT4 in physics feel. So much of the game nailed things way better than GT did, but then there were other things that GT did way better than Forza. The 'weight' of a car was communicated better by GT, for instance.

SkylineObsession
June 15th, 2017, 09:24 PM
Audio is actually what got me off Gran Turismo and onto Forza, way back when Forza 1 was the only game in the series. The car sounds were much 'louder' and better sounding than Gran Turismo, something that still to this day gets me buying the games. I've been playing GT the whole time too, and still will.

The cars are much slidier in Forza and grippier in Gran Turismo (with slicks). In saying that, i spent a shitton of time in GT6 in Drifting lobbies, because of the huge smoke clouds you can make, and the ease (but also the challenge) of getting cars sideways. The cars don't seem to be as easy to 'catch' in Forza Motorsport (Horizon has better drift handling).

There is definitely room for both series's's's's's, as they offer different things/do things differently and have different feels about them. Only bad for the people who can only afford one console, but if you already have both - you're not missing out.

But yeah. If you can, play both series, with a little Project Cars etc on the side - that way you won't be missing anything.

A buddy of mine goes to E3 every year as he's always worked for either a game developer, or now, Sony itself. He said opening it to the public this year really killed the show. People were waiting in line for four hours to watch 5 minute demos. That's bonkers to me, but I don't do the Comic Con stuff either so maybe it comes with the territory.

Kchrpm
June 16th, 2017, 07:45 AM
I thought the show was already dying and they needed a way to "save" it. I don't really understand what E3 is and should be anymore.

Edit: as a spectator at home I enjoy getting so much news and media in the same week, though, so I don't particularly care for the idea that it should just go away.

E3 is supposed to be a centralized place where gaming site media types could sample all of the latest/upcoming wares -- a Super Bowl "Media Day".

But it's turned into an out-and-out show now instead, which hampers most media folks' efforts to see as much as possible.

Kchrpm
June 16th, 2017, 08:06 AM
My understanding was that, originally, it started off as where the game companies made all the presentations and deals for the upcoming holiday season. Games were being treated poorly at CES, so they broke off and made their own show. Now, those deals are made months before E3 starts.

The media coverage of games by smaller companies came after the original purpose, but with the ability to send out digital copies of games, and how all the big companies hold their own major events on their own schedule, I'm not sure that part is necessary anymore, either. It does allow for backroom, private showings, but it seems like that happens anyway for most gaming media (but maybe even tiny sites are getting this access, too, and they wouldn't normally).

Perhaps I'm just jaded by reading/skimming articles about it being unnecessary now again this year:

All I know is, E3 was a much bigger deal when it was "industry only". Years ago the public wasn't allowed, but it wasn't exactly hard to get in. A friend of mine ran a management LLC because she rented out a couple of houses, so we just went as two representatives of "Heritage Investments." Didn't need to show proof, and it was super easy to sneak in with your "media company" that was just a Geocities page.

Then they cracked down hard on that for the same complaints as above - just too crowded, too chaotic, lines too long. That fixed that problem, but I think part of the relevancy of the show was the way word got out when a bunch of game fans descending on the place and then bragged to all their friends about what they saw/played.

It's become a small enough deal that a) I didn't even know it was happening and b) didn't know it was open to the public until a couple of days ago. It's right down the street from me and I have no job right now, but it was late enough in the week that I didn't bother going.
