Today’s musical ear worm is brought to you by BHP mining in Australia, who had to purposefully derail a 200+ wagon locomotive full of iron ore that got away in Western Australia.

I'm not sure if this passes the newsworthy/threadworthy test or not. Time will tell.

If nothing else, it's an easy setup for Mad Max/Road Warrior jokes.

Example:

Here's footage of the safety team on its way to derail the train...

Is an inside joke. We have a thread police in our midst; a quiet hero who sits in judgement of what is and is not worthy of a new Pit Stop thread. He's the hero the GTXF deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

Dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn.

Two reasons this thread is lame and should be closed:

1: They are cars not wagons.
2: No video of the derailment.

....this thread is lame and should be closed...No video of the derailment...

Be patient, gentlemen. Remember that Australia has only had electricity for about thirty years now, and the internet is just now becoming available in the major cities hamlets. News can be slow coming from such remote areas.

Apparently this amateur Aeroscope (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeroscope) footage has been carried out of the country and made available to the internet after being rowed to Papua New Guinea in an outrigger canoe.

Hopefully we'll receive more images, videos, and commentary in the weeks and months to come.

Could be a while. Do you know how hard it is to train a carrier pidgin to type? Just getting it to remember my login details was the biggest hurdle.

Given the location of the derailment was planned and how common things like 4K cameras and drones are these days (even out there in the sticks) they did kinda fuck up by not getting some footage and making a bit of a movie out of it.

Bah, i prefer derailing trains myself.

Here's some of my best (recent) work.

The trains started taking out the bridge themselves with loco explosions, i may or may not have taken out more of the bridge myself.

But yeah, the carnage from that Aussie derailment is much worse than i expected it to be. :twitch:

Methinks that getting the train stopped before it ploughed into a populated area took precedence over the potential entertainment value.

Seems fitting that a thread about a train derailment gets derailed.

It's WA, there's only one populated area and thats 2000km away!

I know we are a bit backwards but one thing we do have is cities!
Thats the problem - we have a huge bloody country and every bastard lives in one of about 5 cities. The rest of the place is empty. More people live within 10km of me than live in an area the size of Texas where this train derailment happened.

Rare White Ape

How does that compare to the state of Rhode Island?

Texas is about half the size of the Northern Territory, which is the top, middle region

But how about the size of Alaska....

Just sayin'

Dicknose
November 11th, 2018, 04:27 PM
Western Australia (where this happened) - 2.6M km^2 (population 2.6M, of which 2M are in Perth)
Alaska - 1.7M km^2

So yeah a lot bigger than Alaska and excluding the one major city - about the same population.

Until a few years ago there was a single electoral division that was 2.3M km^2 to include 80k voters. Again comfortably bigger than Alaska (close to Alaska+Texas) and from wikipedia, its an area the size of France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Poland and Great Britain combined.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_of_Kalgoorlie

This is one of the least inhabited parts of the planet

By contrast I live in Ryde - population 116k, area 40km^2 (population will go up soon - finishing some large apartment blocks, Id guess 2000 units across about 10 buildings. Plus approving 2 building that will 60 storeys!! This is the same area that IMOA claims to have an office - but he is never there! This is a middle suburb, not an inner suburb, so about 16km from the city.

Yeah that train wasnt near any population centre!
And this thread is derailed even more.
