Glad they didn't call it Top Gun II, I'm really getting sick and tired of all the sequels... :p

Anyway, just like Force Awaken trailer, this trailer stirred up something within me after watching it... doesn't look as cheesy as the original...

Saw Top Gun when I was a jr high school... and it kinda steered me into becoming an aerospace engineer! 3 decades later, haven't really worked on fighter jets that much. Only worked on fixing up the F-5s as my 1st gig... for those who don't know F-5, it's those fake Migs in the original movie! ;)

Interesting.

I'm also almost interested in the rumored Bill & Ted reunion.

It occurs to me that Clint Eastwood could still make Firefox II - he's not even 90 yet. :) I liked this movie enough at the time to buy the book.

HA! Almost forgot about that movie! I saw that one as an elementary school kid at Taiwan I think... or was it over here in the US on cable TV...

Anyway, I never repeatedly view FireFox as much as Top Gun back then... I'd only repeatedly use FireFox browser! :p

Plus, I doubt a 90 yr old man will be able to go steal another plane from Putin... plus, now that we regularly fly US astronauts on Russian rockets and our presidents have such cozy relationships...

Well, now that the Cold War is over, former fighter pilot Mitchell Gant has been called back from retirement and given a new assignment...to steal Kim Jong Un's Mercedes limousine!

Just as in Firefox, Gant will have to disguise himself to get close to the target.

And, he does have some experience with this kind of mission...

Apparently the F14 in the trailer is full CGI. They borrowed a museum one to scan.

Looks like Cruise has on some sort of U2 pilot pressure suit in one scene.

Love the F-14! Glad they brought it back somehow...

Another reason why Top Gun made such an impression on the young me was because I saw the flag of Taiwan on Mavericks flight jacket!

I’m now a bit disappointed to see the old maverick altered his jacket 3 decades later to make the Chinese communists happy...

30 years as a fighter pilot? Not according to reality. Don't care though. Top Gun is easily one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies.

The more I think about it, the more I understand that Tom Cruise is simply the maddest dog in Hollywood.

He cops a lot of flak for various reasons, but that it his own doing and he continues to do those weird things anyway. But in terms of his behaviours as a film star and producer, he's got some legitimately impressive and crazy shit going on in his head.

Consider these points:

- Not a lot of the roles he is in are really that bad. Having moved on from typical blockbusters (aside from Mission: Impossible, which he owns the film rights to) he has been going it alone and producing some fine work. Jack Reacher and Oblivion come to mind. They're not the most amazing films ever made but hot damn the script writing is great. Oblivion is one of the most engaging films I've ever seen.

- He loves to do his own stunts, but the production teams in the past have regularly refused to allow this to happen, citing insurance costs and production delays being too much of a risk to let the main actor loose. So he just started his own production company and now he is his own boss. He does some of the most incredible stunts in Hollywood and truly put his body on the line.

And so it has led me to the conclusion that Cruise really only made Top Gun Maverick just so that he has an excuse to be shot off a carrier deck and escorted around in a Super Hornet for a few weeks. I know it's not necessarily true but the story checks out.

Did he do his own stunts for Tropic Thunder? :)

Anyhow, I like the trailer... but I'm figuring "Phoenix" has got to be Goose's daughter (born after her father died) and that's why Maverick goes back to Top Gun (to mentor her) and away from secret stealth (pressurized suit) missions.

He still doesn't wear a helmet riding a motorcycle.

I think that P-51 Mustang is actually Tom Cruise's.

If he has that big of a garage AND he's living in San Diego... he's been making some serious hazard pay.

He actually HAS been promoted since the original film. A Captain is a pretty high rank in the Navy.

And it's relevant to post this little audition gem:

Ha! Goodness gracious.... Glad we can finally find something we both can agree on!

According to Wikipedia, Phoenix is Goose’s son’s love interest.

Phoenix is probably mavericks own daughter... conceived with Charlie when they were taking each other’s breaths away... :D

If I have to pick fault over something it'd be the scene(s) where Maverick is still fucking riding his bike without helmets. That's just so 1980's. Maybe the greased up volleyball playing is a bit over the top too, but they have to do something to attract female moviegoers I guess.

Movie looks really good. But the F/A-18 just doesn't hold a candle to the presence of the F-14.

Yeah, there's just something about them F-14s..., but too bad they're just too expensive to maintain.

And unfortunately, navy pilots don't really fly air forces' F-22... they should've transfer Maverick to the Air Force this time... and then pave the way for Maverick to become a Space Ranger! :D
