View Full Version : Sell everything for fun???

Ok, so I have been perusing the markets out of boredom, since the garage build is on hold....again. I currently daily drive a 2012 F150 platinum. I really enjoy it, but the fuel mileage sucks, and I'm tired of trying to find parking for it's 23foot ass.

I could sell it, the POS jeep, the Corvette, and my trailer and pick up a used Giulia Quad, should I do it?

I'm considering selling the BRZ and Super Duke, getting by with just my Crosstrek daily for another year or so until the lease is up then getting something really fun, but somewhat more useful than a BRZ, Supra, etc.

With all the travel I do for work now, combined with living in South Florida, the fun stuff just doesn't get used in a fun way enough.

Option two is moving to somewhere with great roads and cheap housing.

I want to take both to a track though at some point first.

If you feel the need to impress Darla by being the Alfalfa the Alpha in an Alfa then buy a second one to drive when the primary is broked. Best advice I can give you is to get FiSTed.

Personally I'd lean towards yes. Owning lots of vehicles is a hassle. The Guilia Quadrifoglio seems really cool.

If you can manage with just one, then having one car that's really exciting/special seems better than a number that are meh.

I guess the caveats are
(i) maintenance, some people report quite a few issues with the Guilias, would you have any kind of warranty or hope for the best? Any good independent Alfa specialists nearby? Or a good dealer?
(ii) depreciation, likely to be quite a bit on a newish car at a high price
(iii) would a modern car with EPAS, AT, turbos etc give sufficient thrill of driving to replace the Vette?

but overall, yeah, I'd do it.

I am in a similar conundrum. I love the Delorean. And I love racing. They are completely different kinds of fun, but they draw from the same resource pool in terms of time and money. If I sold the DMC it would free up almost $1,000 a month when you factor in paying off its note and then paying off other debt with the realized equity. It would be enough to make racing comfortable.

Or, just keep the DMC and in a few years it will cost nothing to have around.

The deciding factor thus far is that Ash really likes it. Happy wife....

Yeah. When I moved to Wisconsin I had a great urge to simplify and sold off some vehicles. Now I have six vehicles and two houses and it doesn't bother me. Much. Except the houses. Yeah. It'd be nice to have only one house.

He's looking at used, which have already taken massive depreciation hits from the ~$80k price in his favor. 2017s are dipping below $40k, and 2018 are starting to be under $50k, either year with less than 20k miles.

I drove a QF around the block a couple of weeks ago. Loved it. It was awesome. But it seems like an expensive proposition no matter how you slice it. Unless you score a great deal on a used one that turns out to be extra reliable and you sell it 1 year later for little to no loss.

I’d say sell it all and ride motorbikes, but I’m sure the OP is past all that…

To be honest a Quadrifoglio will be the ultimate eccentric old bloke “I used to own one of them” cars in 40 years time.

Buy one and tell the tale to your kids. It’ll be fun!

I'd get a "newer" 911 Carrera 4S (2005+). I know you have done the 911 thing sort of, imo it never felt like you ever gave it a chance. But for an everyday car and fun as shit to drive it's hard for me to imagine a 911 Carrera 4 doesn't tick all the boxes.

Godson
October 24th, 2019, 01:15 PM
Oh I loved the 911, but it lacked any sort of real practicality. See, back seat.

Everything else was awesome about it. Looks, drive, etc. Nothing really bad about it, except the lack of rear seat for anyone..... I'm 6'2" and that eliminated anything for anyone.

I once thought to myself, "What if Lori died?" That is a terrible thing to wonder, but I feel it is appropriate for this thread. I would literally sell almost everything, except for backpacking stuff and a laptop. Levi and I would go on a long road trip, like one lap of North America, until I figured out what to do with the rest of my life. Not sure what I would do with the Subaru. I would like it to be more off-road capable for adventuring; lift kit and beefier tires maybe? Either that or a 4WD pick-up with reasonable mpg, if possible. It would be nice to comfortably sleep in the vehicle in a pinch.

Lori had a graduate student that did just that. After he got his masters, he bought a small pick-up with a cap over the bed. I helped him build a platform in the back for a mattress. He took off on a 20,000 mile road trip. He eventually got a lab job in New Orleans.

I have a rule, from here on out, if I buy a vehicle, it has to be from a manufacturer in which I have not owned.

Also, the Porsche is out because it is more of a barge than a super saloon.

Buddy owns a Camaro SS 1LE, which I have drive a fair amount, and I don't want to own something similar as another friend.

If I was going to sell everything for one fun thing that one fun thing wouldn't be an alfa. Great car when you've got a backup, not so much if you don't.

I just want to highlight this. Every time Greg has given me car buying advice, it's turned out to be spot on. For example, he warned me that buying an RX-7 would have far higher running costs than my 180SX, and it has done. I don't regret getting the RX-7, it's worth it, but it's always nice to go in with your eyes open, so to speak.

If it was me I'd totally be buying the Alfa ;) but I'd also be checking that I could manage without it from time to time.

IMOA
November 6th, 2019, 04:12 PM
To be fair, predicting that an RX7 will cost more than a 180sx to run isn't exactly a stroke of genius :)

That said, given the parameters in the thread, I'd think that at least a testdrive of an AMG like a C63 should be on the list

I was gonna suggest a AMG Merc but for some reason I figured you would think it was too pretentious.

At that, it seems like you want a powerful Luxury Saloon or powerful Luxury Coupe. Thus:

ATS-V
CTS-V
M3
M5
Kia Stinger
Jaguar XE
Lexus GS/F
Lexus RC/F
Aston Martin V8 Vantage (Looks like they have a shelf, dog lays down there, you get all the chicks)
Civic Type R
Maserati GranSport
Maserati GranTurismo :D

I rented an XE S in 2015. The engine sounded great. The infotainment was rubbish. I think it's worth consideration, especially if there's been insane depreciation to make it much cheaper than a C63. It certainly has more character than one, even if the C63 is probably technically/objectively a "better" car.

If I had to pick from that list the ATS-V is tough to turn down. If ridden in John's at full song, and seen them on track at TNiA/TT. They're no joke.

Also, with Tylers self-imposed restriction your list dwindles:
