Firstly i don't know whether to thank Australia for the new year/decade gift they've given us or not, yellow skies.

Kinda creepy, it's 10am here, and still darkish and everything is yellow, like a sepiaish filter. :o Tried capturing it with the camera but didn't come out too well.

Time the Aussies got a break, a few weeks of light rain would be a good idea. :) :(

Anyway, here's to another 10 years with you freaks. :rawk: :toast:

Sunset last night. 'Double' sun is either cos of window double glaze, or the camera may have done it's three photos combined into one trick. Was redder than it looks in pic.

Just after 9am, with the highlighted grass, trees etc. Supposed to be a sunnyish day today...

And 10am, 20 mins ago. :o

Those pics don't show how bad it really is.

Early Happy New Year and Decade to everyone!

For those going out tonight to party and celebrate, make sure to be smart and safe. Don't drink and drive. Arrive alive at home and not at the hospital or police station...or the morgue.

I still go by 0-9 as it seems more logical, even if its not right. ;)

Yup. Ordinals work from 1 to 10.

Still, Happy New 365-ish period of arbitrary time in units of 24 hours!

It's the 20's either way.

Let's completely ignore the consequences of our actions until it all blows up in our faces again!

Do you mind if I steal one of your pics of our combusted eucalypts to share on Facebook?

New decade starts in 2021 kthxbaiYou know full-well that is never going to be generally accepted. It's an even harder sell than the new century.

Hope people here and everywhere strike a good balance between finding enjoyment and focusing on addressing serious difficult problems.

Generally accepted "in the US".
It's the way ordinals work. And it works the same as centuries and millennia.
Being unable to understand the most basic rules of measurement is actually a serious difficult problem.
But then again, we are in 2019 and someone, I'll say no names, still uses barbaric imperial system...

I'm normally a stickler for these things, but I'm okay when it comes to decades starting with 0. Mostly because decades are generally not thought of in reference to 1 A.D.

No one is calling it the 202nd decade. In that case, yeah I'd take issue if they said it started today. That starts in a year.

When talking of millennia or centuries, we normally do put it in that context (21st century, second millennium).

A decade is just 10 years. Technically every year (or hell, every day or even second) is the start of a new decade. We generally do separate decades by the tens digit, so in this case I think it's fine to reference today as the start of a new decade.

Context is important.

Even Oxford defines it as starting with 0 (and sometimes 1)

Yes, this is the reasonable response.

People that claim otherwise are cut from the same cloth as the 'Die Hard is a Christmas movie' folks. They just want attention. Let it go and move on.

I just say that they made a mistake in the first decade so it was only 9 years long but ever since then we've got it right by starting the decade at the '0' year.

The third decade of the 21st century starts in 2021.

The 2020's (aka 20's) start this year.

Although the 2020's is a decade, it is one of the decades not aligned with the centuries.

In fact. This reduces to every year is the start of a decade.
