It's almost time for the 2021 Formula 1 race season, so it's time for the 2021 GTXF Fantasy F1 draft!

First off, the rules:


One team per entrant
Entrants will PM me their team choice starting at 12 PM EST on Sunday March 21, 2021 (https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=GTXF+Fantasy+Formula+1+Team+Sub missions+Opening+Day+&iso=20210321T12&p1=414&ah=23&am=55)
- Please include drivers' last names or short names, not just first names
Submissions must be sent before the beginning of Q1 for Round 1 (11 AM EST on Saturday March 27, 2021) (https://www.formula1.com/en/racing/2021/Bahrain.html)
Teams may total no more than 40 in cumulative cost
No duplicate teams
- If two entrants submit the same driver lineup during the first approximately 24 hours, the entrant who did better in last year's fantasy league will be asked to change their lineup. After that, whoever selected the team first will get to keep it.
- If an entrant submits their lineup before the official start time, it will be treated as if it was received after the first 24 hours
Teams consist of drivers, not team seats
- If a drafted driver moves to another team, temporarily or permanently, you will continue to earn points for your drafted driver.
- If a drafted driver is replaced by another driver, temporarily or permanently, you will not receive the replacement driver's points.
We'll figure out anything else as it comes up

Maybe make some of the mid-pack 0.5-1.0 higher? I think the cost ratio looks good for them most part, just too low. Basically could see a lot of people trying to pick team suck (i.e.; everyone but Stroll and the top two teams comes out to 40).
Mathematically speaking, Bottas and Verstappen can finish 1-2 at every single race and still lose to Team Suck if Hamilton or Perez have reliability problems.

I agree that most drivers are off by half a mill.

The problem comes down to calculating in 2 steps, first the team total, based on what betting sites say and then eyeballing the driver split from that total. Though, in my defense, I tried to be as objective as I could.


FWIW, I think the Red Bull total is overvalued, but that's what bookies had them for.
My spreadsheet was also putting out super high values for Williams, but I can't see either of their cars scoring more than 8 points this season, so I had to exclude them from the calculations.
The Haas, well since I was allowed to do the maths, I figured I was allowed to indulge in slamming the driver I hate the most, So it seemed only fair I gave his teammate the same value. :meh:

The one driver who I think came out massively undervalued was Alonso, He should be a great points getter, not only because he can individually perform well, but I think he can single-handedly make his team perform better.

The reserve drivers I added for shits and giggles. However, a 23-event calendar during a pandemic should provide enough opportunities for acts of god.

Albon, in case of emergency, should go drive for points-scoring teams that he is familiar with, so he could very well be scoring. Hulk should be sought after by more than one team. And Russell, let's face it, has one foot inside any of the two Mercedes.

The rest of them, who knows!

Mario, prices look good (Williams and Haas look to be bad, Red Bull a genuine threat to Mercedes), just that with 40M you could end up with a lot of folks picking 14 drivers with 13 of them being the same and having Latifi or a reserve driver being the difference (high chance of zero points being scored by the difference-maker).

The gap to the mid-pack seems too great. Are the bookies' values based on likely hood to win the constructors? Because that would make sense, but it terms of scoring points it undervalues P3-P8

Teams 1-6 values are ok, It's 7-9 that they really don't care about. Although, they're pretty much in agreement as to T10.

I worked my ass off in last year's spreadsheet, I had mastered the art of weighing past performance, punditry and betmakers' odds. Alas, I must have left the file in the work computer... :lol:

After Balki made it known the numbers could be borked, I did come up with a second set of driver values.

I think they could have been more competitive but I could not find the excel algorithm (VBA script?) that checks the number of subsets that can be obtained with a given target (sum of 40 money points) and, since I didn't have time to check the Set Theory notebook to find out how the maximum number of subsets is calculated, I didn't bother. Maybe we could ask Keef to run them after the end of the season, just out of curiosity.

I believe so. I think by the time I put in the finish orders, the penalties had already been assessed, so I have Stroll 8th and Raikkonen 13th, which matches the current results page on formula1.com with the notes for all the time penalties at the bottom.

Yeah, that's just a table that shows the most recent 21 points paying results. Since no one got points for fastest lap in this race, a result from last week showed up. It doesn't change the math anywhere.

The car appears to have potential and were only recently unlocked by Lando Norris? If it weren't for Lando Norris, I'd still think McLaren sucks based on Ricciardo's early season performances.

The car is probably just very finicky to drive, but apparently if the sweet spot is hit and when the driver is in the zone, they could beat Mercedes and RB even if they didn't crash out! Anyway, this season has been very interesting and unusual... and our fantasy result reflected that. Team suck is doing rather well I thought... not to mention our current run away top 2 avoided picking any of the championship contenders!

I'm pretty jaded about the actual F1 season. They had a great TV product and they managed to over-script it, it's almost as if J. J. Abrams ran the show.

I truly don't know that I can keep my interest for next year, they'd have to get rid of Masi, offer some other changes, and then the new chassis must show it works as intended.

But i can't see them making any sensible changes, it's going to be money, money, money, and millennials and their short attention spans.
