Late submissions received on Friday March 3 will be accepted but cannot be duplicates of an on-time submission. Duplicates within late submissions will give priority based on time submitted.

Submissions received after Friday March 3 WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED (unless I feel like it).

Driver Values from Mario

I calculated from the last 4 seasons, or 82 races. And both teams' and drivers' values suffer from over or under representation. Two examples:

K-Mag. I believe he competed in about half those races, and in the time frame that was sampled, in one of the years when he was paired with Grosjean, the Swiss contributed very few points to their team's tally. Magnussen also was alongside Schumacher during his horrible year, and that sends his sum to one side of the balance. Secondly, teams are the bigger factor in the sum that make up a driver's value, now, in F1 there are 3 groupings for teams: contenders, midfield and backmarkers. The two or three contenders tend to monopolize the market for points every year (they grab between 60% and >75% of available points in any given year), and the five or six midfield teams have tended to put on very competitive fights to split roughly one third of the available points.

Depending on the year, there's one or two teams that will score close to zero points, and their drivers could produce negative values, like, I believe Mazepin did last year. I don't think i recalculated for his replacement then, so K-Mag might have been AWESOME VALUE in 2022. But this year Haas is poised to be fighting with McLaren in the tail end of the midfield, so, because of how the eighth-placed team has historically behaved, its drivers come with some expectation of scoring within the worthiness of 11 of our fantasy dollars. The problem is compunded because Nico Fückenberg had been subbing for the high-scoring Racing Point outfit in the sample space, but he contributed very little of the pointage, so his weighs suffer.

So, while I still think that Mag will beat Hulk, I don't expect it to be an 11-1 blow out. But I did not want to tinker with one driver pairing just for this anomaly.

The other example is reigning world champion Max Verstappen. RBR inherits the dominance with which the #1 team has behaved in the last few years (RB '22 and Merc '19 were vintage years, let's admit that), plus he had monster years (relative to his teammates) against Perez last year and in that year when he had Gasly and Albon in the other car. Chances are I've not really overvalued him. Again, even if I still have doubts, I didn't think it was fair to manipulate the sums.

I've picked Gasly for my team. It's kind of a gamble, as everyone is expecting Alpine to come out swinging with their update package for the first race. If it works, I've bought with a 30% discount; and if it doesn't, well shit.

The AMR pair also looks good, but Fred is poison in real life and I expect the same from his fantasy persona. And Stroll just doesn't have any luck. Plus, he's already missing the opening round.

Norris? I don't know. Might be worth it. If not, he should be walking out of his contract.

Heh, funnily enough, I just checked and the proportion in cost between VER/PER is the same as in GAS/OCO. And I subjectively think that Alpine has the best driver pairing. To me, they are two of the most opportunistic drivers.

But like I said, I think the problem lies in that, of the last four years, we had two where the winning team basically ran the score.

I guess by putting Max at 30 you insure no one will pick him. I’m sure you could consistently get more points with smartly chosen drivers equaling 30. You’d only need to accurately pick a podium finisher and a high mid pack finisher assuming Max won the race.

Sorry, snoozed on this, didn't even realize the season was starting if it weren't for an ESPN commercial.
I saw the F1 channel's YouTube videos of the first two test sessions last week (they said Aston Martin was quick and RBR the fastest), but zero news since (didn't pick either AM or RBR).

Regardless, thank you for running this and the awesome data presentations that follow the races.

I had ALO on my team for a hot minute before switching it up. I forget who the rest of my lineup was though. When I removed him I had to change other drivers as well.

Fiat 500 and I will be locked together in battle this season unless there's a swing in the tight midfield. We both have Checo and Lewis for front(ish) runners. In the midfield he has Hulkenberg and Norris, while I have De Vries and Albon. At the moment I'm not looking real confident in my midfield choices. :) I expect McLaren to turn things around to some degree and start earning more regular points at some stage this season.

I really hate these after the fact penalties. They’re fine if officials find the car’s too light or not meeting rules or clear attempt at cheating, but to penalize somebody for an on track incident which they couldn’t call during the race in real time is just lame.

Yeah, yeah, that too, but even if not, it’s still pretty dumb to do this 5hrs after the fact. Luckily podium finishers didn’t get penalized. Or else it’d look really bad!

Someday, they’ll end up taking a win from somebody after the fact and situation will blow up with fans if FIA doesn’t fix this soon.

I think teams are unhappy about this. Even Max thought those deleted laps were ridiculous. If they think it’s so easy to remain within those lines, why don’t they drive it themselves?

Spirit of the rule is fine. We want drivers to stay ‘inside’, but if you’re having trouble enforcing a rule, something has to change.

It's gonna cost me more points but the results have been updated following several post-race time penalties.

I would like to see Logan's idea attempted. I've been thinking this for years; put a wide strip of grass at the track limits edge, perhaps at least two car widths, and then go back to asphalt outside of that if you want to avoid mistakes resulting in DNFs. I think the hard part here might be the transition from grass to pavement, you wouldn't want a lip that could launch cars.

I've thought about that grass bit, too, but I was always under the impression that the paved runoff was for all of the other series and amateur track events, to make them more palatable for people to take their expensive cars out and not worry about screwing them up. I don't know what the grass part does for those. As you said, it will get torn up and cause a dip.

What track/race was it recently where the cars were so consistently going off that they dug up all of the grass/dirt at the edge, and made it a serious lip that caused some major issues?
Was it NASCAR at Indy road course in 2011? The cars had no minimum ride height rules so were launching the bottom of the oil sump off the back stretch chicane. They ended up removing the rumble strip.

Or did you mean Le Mans this year on the exit of Indianapolis?

I always just assumed, because it combined with really flat or non-existent curbs as well.

Maybe instead of a wide grass strip, which can cause problems with the transitions between surfaces, pave a wide strip of low-grip asphalt instead? The issue with that could be that clever drivers could still take advantage by going wide on certain exits, because I don't think a slippery-enough asphalt might exist in the dry.

I asked Russ about a low-grip paint. There are apparently slick coats/gel coats that are used on the bottom of boats, jet skis, and similar, and Russ suggested epoxy.

So maybe you transition from the track to a flat or slightly angled curb covered in a slick coat that is wide enough for the whole car to get on, but so slick that you can't stay at speed.

i wish F1 were moving further away from videogames instead of from garages.

I think the track limits issue deserves a more mechanical solution. like, having the geometry of the kerb be related to the attributes of the car. for example, the kerb starts 5 mm past the end of the white line, it has a level of protrusion that is x times higher than the height of the floor, and a width that is no wider than 1/y of the width of the car measured at the outside face of the front tires. maybe slope the element outside the white line in such a away so that it pushes cars further away from the edge of the track.

I say keep the penalties as they are, just make it easier for the stewards to judge them and make it so the cars leave the track more easily if they attempt to gain an advantage, instead of trying to make leaving the track a penalty onto itself.

According to our previous rules, if you drafted De Vries, sucks to suck. You should have predicted it!

(Something like De Vries getting the boot and Ricciardo taking his place, with neither driver being in any other seat all year, would be easy to account for the way the season is currently managed. However, any situations where you would end up with your original driver AND their replacement participating in the same race, or the replacement driver replacing someone else, I don't have a solution for at the moment).

I have two suggestions (we can implement them in future seasons):

1. If your driver is replaced you get your money back, which you can spend on other drivers. But you only get the points the new drivers earn from that point onwards, and you keep the points your driver earned prior to being booted.

Or

2. Consider each driver choice to be at your own risk and just continue to award points for the seat that the old driver was occupying. This is much simpler and maintains continuity.

I prefer option 2, to be honest. Much less work for the series admin.

So, as far as I understand it, we have results here not long after the race finished (thank you Keith), but the actual F1 thread hasn't had a post for the last 14 hours.

Is this really what we all think of F1 and the Vegas GP nowadays?

(Like, seriously Keith, thank you so much for your effort in doing this for us, even in the early hours of the morning)

I just assume that most of us in America didn't stay up for the middle of the night race. I actually turned it on just as it was ending, tried to watch from the start, but then got multiple messages from F1 telling me the ending just before the lights went out.

I've now been up for almost 4 hours, just set an alarm for 10 am so I can go back to sleep.

I will say that, despite knowing far too much about the end of the race from before the start, it was still an interesting one to watch.

We should maybe make Max the full 40 points next season :lol: Still would have finished 6th (assuming I had ONLY him)

Definitely gotta thank McLaren for turning around their early season performance though.

McLaren's massive improvement (I can't think of any team that's had that big an in-season swing in recent history) cost me as nortmally I would take one or both but the car was awful in testing and season start. If the car was that good at the beginning of the season I doubt Max would've had it quite so easy.
