Ash and I had the pleasure of vacationing with Ed in 2017. We rented a C7 Corvette out of Orlando. He was thrilled to drive it, and we were thrilled to see his LASERs at work, the jet car program, and the astronauts he introduced us to. He was a genuinely sweet man who loved his dogs more than life itself. I had hoped to fly down there when I get my pilot's license and reconnect with him soon. This hurts.

I am once again reminded how little I know of many of you, and yet how impactful your lives can still be.

I never knew NQ's true name, nor his handsome face.
I always thought he was a horse aficionado because of an avatar at a previous forum, and never knew of his love of rescue dogs.
I never knew he wrote and published a graphic novel.
I think I might have known long ago about his career in LASERs... and I think the picture used in his obit is something he'd be proud of... with the warning "Big Scary Laser" in the background.

I never knew him like many of you, but I know I miss him.

I can't possibly express how much he loved his dogs. They were the central focus of his life, for sure, and he loved it.

I'll share these because they make me happy:

This is incredibly sad news.

We had a rocky start back at the original GTF, where he was a mod and I was a troublemaker. I said some terrible things to him after his heart attack, and there was serious bad blood between us.

When we migrated to the first GTX I straightened out my act and it was important to me to apologize to him, which I did. He found it in his heart to forgive me and was a good online friend for so many years after, eventually on Facebook as well. I always wanted to visit him in person and made a couple of trips to Florida in 2011 and 2013, but he was unavailable. I know he was a Trump supporter, and a lot of people in the community cut him off because of that, but I stuck with him because I knew he had a good heart and was a man of character.

He would tell me about his plans to write a book and I urged him to do it. He mentioned how he kept having to put it on the back burner because of trouble with his publisher and copyright stuff, which I didn’t fully understand, but I would still bug him about it every few months. It’s nice to see he finally did get his book published.

“The Many Torments of Edward Brollachan - Part One” I’m definitely going to check this out.

In 2021 he unfriended me after the events of January 6th, because I shared something he didn’t like about Trump. I was always meaning to contact him again and mend fences, (as recently as last month), but never did. I really regret that. :(

RIP Ed. You were a really good guy.

Well, shit. :(

Like Sandy, Ed appeared to end our friendship over Trump. I considered him a friend until then. I hung out with him back in 2008 on a trip to Florida. Raced with him a lot in rFactor. We shared a camaraderie over racing, cars, dogs and art. He was one of my biggest supporters of my art and videos. I felt sad for him that he succumbed to the cult of Trump. :(

Ed would periodically message me to check up on me (especially after exceptionally violent weekends up here), concerned about my safety and regular exposure to violence. I'd send him dog memes.

I was not much friend with him like many of you but with the discover of Facebook he was one of you that reached out and was a pleasant surprise. A really nice guy.
Unfortunately with the rise of Trump and me being quite left wing oriented I lost touch with him: still friends in FB but I think he obscured me or something - that does not matter much now, still feel quite sad about it.

Nice remembrance article of him at Space Coast Daily: https://spacecoastdaily.com/2023/09/florida-tech-mourns-the-passing-of-technology-laser-research-technician-edward-croy/

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech mourns the passing of Edward Croy, a laser research technician and technology whisperer who spent nearly 15 years at Florida Tech helping to harness the university’s tools and machines for education and industry.

Mr. Croy, an active Florida Tech employee at the time of his passing, was hired in 2009 by Mary Helen McCay, Ph.D. He came aboard as a laser research technician and operator for the university’s Center for Hydrogen Research, which McCay directed.

He later worked in a similar capacity at the High Heat Flux Test Laboratory at Florida Tech’s Center for Advanced Coatings, which McCay also directed.

He was also the laser safety and laser technology consultant for Florida Tech.

Ilya Mingareev, Ph.D., co-director at the Center for Advanced Coatings, was Mr. Croy’s supervisor. He said Mr. Croy was an essential part of operations and the center’s success.

“His expertise and tireless efforts in maintaining laser lab systems and equipment were invaluable. His technical competency and meticulous attention to detail ensured that the research operations at the Center always ran smoothly and efficiently,” Mingareev said.

In the last few months, Mr. Croy transitioned from his longtime base at the Applied Research Lab to a new role as a technology specialist at the home of some of the university’s most sophisticated equipment, the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Innovative Design. He played a vital role in the installation and operation of cutting-edge metal 3D-printing equipment at CAMID.

“Emotionally and personally, he was a great human being, an incredible individual,” said CAMID Director Juan C. Avendano. “Professionally he leaves a huge vacuum that will be hard to fill.”

Avendano was an undergraduate student at Florida Tech in 2010 when he first met Mr. Croy, who supervised him in the hydrogen research center.

“He was loved by everyone,” Avendano said. “Everyone who interacted with him had a good experience and a great story to tell. That was him as a person.”

Prior to joining Florida Tech, Mr. Croy worked 30 years in the laser industry as a senior technician; in production, engineering and field service; and on laser products ranging from military systems and industrial laser scanners to scientific research lasers and medical laser and optical systems.

His engineering capabilities spanned a broad range of disciplines, from lasers and laser optics, to mechanical, electronic/electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and advanced sensors.

Mr.Croy attended Lively Vocational Technical School (now Lively Technical College) in Tallahassee in 1978-79, where he earned an associate degree in laser electro-optics.

“Ed will be remembered for his straight-forward personality, his unwavering sense of responsibility, and his infectious enthusiasm,” Mingareev said. “He was not only a dedicated colleague but also a cherished friend to me and many others.”

Funeral arrangements are pending. Details will be shared with the campus community when available.

Ed's brother Paul logged into Ed's Facebook and wrote a nice epilogue of sorts, though he only shared it with friends so you may not be able to access it if you're not on his FB: https://www.facebook.com/edward.croy/posts/pfbid02smWrsx7tQgb8DvkxXNUo3YnX7Wie4Q7vV2CB5ftC69k rEx8BW9grmSQbiHBn36KWl

Rest In Peace, Dale Edward Croy, Jr.
March 15, 1958 - September 12, 2023
To all of Ed’s friends and our family, this is Paul Croy, Ed’s brother.

My brother left this world to be with our Lord on September 12, 2023. He was involved in a crash on August 23, rear ended by a reckless driver while stopped in traffic on his way home from work. As I know many of you will ask these questions, Ed was transported to Holmes Regional in Melbourne. He was talking (he actually called me within a minute after the crash occurred). Over the next 20 days he was flown to Advent Health in Winter Park. He underwent several procedures to strengthen his heart, but the damage was unrecoverable. It is of great importance that the last time we were able to speak he asked me to tell our Mama and sister Lisa that he had been praying to Jesus. This has been of great comfort, as Ed had struggled with his faith for a long time. A very kind young priest came to us at Advent and administered the Anointing of the Sick. I thanked him for his prayers, and as he turned to go the attending physician, who was standing at the foot of the bed caught my eye and indicated the monitors. Our Ed was gone. In that moment, in spite of the feeling of overwhelming grief, I also felt a great peace.

Melbourne Police conducted an investigation at the scene of the crash and based upon the information known at the scene, charged the driver with Failure to Use Due Care. The officer told Ed that they were looking for this driver based on a number of calls about his reckless operation. The driver paid the civil penalty. I notified Melbourne PD of Ed’s death, and they initiated a Traffic Homicide Investigation. We knew from the outset that since the driver had been charged and paid the fine, no further charges could be filed against him. We have also determined that the driver was not insured, and the owner of the car only had the bare minimum coverage.

I was unable to adopt Ed’s sweet greyhound, Daisy. Through friends and Adoptable Greythounds of Florida (AOG.org), I found a lovely lady and her husband who fell in love with Daisy and gave her a loving home. Sadly, Daisy was found to have cancer, and crossed the rainbow bridge to be with her Daddy on December 28, 2023.

Ed was born in Tallahassee on March 15, 1958. He graduated from Lively Vo-Tech in Tallahassee before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, where he was trained in advanced air avionics. Upon his discharge he returned to Tallahassee and returned to Lively (now a part of Tallahassee State College) and was trained in Laser Optics. I have so often been amazed at his skills and abilities in the field of Laser Optics. He worked over more than forty years in industrial lasers, military applications - he helped develop the laser weapons guidance systems for the M1 Abrams Tank - continued in laser applications for medical / Lasik, and for the last fourteen years has operated the “Big Scary Laser” at Florida Institute of Technology’s Applied Research Facility, where he will forever be known as “Ed the Laser Guy”. He also served as the schools’ laser safety officer. In recent months he took on a new role at the university in the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Innovative Design (CAMID). Ed was excited about his work in his new challenging position.

Ed had numerous varied loves and interests in his life. As those closest to Ed can attest, when he took an interest in something, he was all in. Ed began playing guitar in 1969 or 1970. Although he could read music and tablature, he had the ability to hear a song then reproduce it. I still wish I could play like Ed. It is his music that has remained throughout all of his other endeavors. During the 1980s, Ed took an interest in windsurfing. At one time he had the Florida Open-water speed record. I still have his speed-needle racing board. He also studied a number of martial arts disciplines with black belts in Taekwondo and Shotokan Karate. Since the early 2000s we distracted ourselves with Grand Turismo racing (Thanks PlayStation). He had also become quite passionate about writing. He started with an online game, Bloodletting. Vampires and other immortals, magic. But his favorite part of that was in the writing and character development. He looked into our family history and created an immortal character based our Scottish heritage, and even published a graphic novel, “The Many Torments of Edward Brollachan: Part One (A Bloodletting Adventure)". And of course there were his dogs. We were living together in Winter Park when he found our first whippet, Leeloo (yes from the character in the classic “The Fifth Element”). He then had Galahad and Lara before adopting his greyhounds, Niya and Daisy. I know he was warmly greeted by his beloved fur babies.

Mama, Lisa and I felt Ed would not have wanted a service. We remember him from our best times. Ed’s ashes are interred at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery near Mims. Ed was very proud of his service.
Ed was preceded in death by our father, Dale E. Croy, Sr. of Tallahassee, FL. He is survived by our mother, Angie Croy of Destin, FL and our stepmother, Linda Croy of Tallahassee, FL and his 5 siblings: Paul L Croy (Suely), Port Saint Lucie, FL; Lisa (Croy) Fulmer (Timothy), Destin, FL ; LeAnne (Croy) Chrischilles (Brad), Jacksonville, FL ; Dale E Croy, III (Amy) Daphne, AL; John David Croy (Mitsy), Woodville, FL; and his beloved nieces and nephews as well and numerous treasured friends.
I’m sorry to have waited so long to let some of you know. I have been tasked with caring for Ed’s final affairs and on the advice of counsel have kept off of social media. We are struggling with Ed’s loss daily. I smile and cry every time I see something I know I should be sharing with him. Remember Ed with love, friendship and hope for his future through his renewed faith in our Lord.

Special thanks to Mitch Percival, who has been there for Ed for so long, and is still here for our family.
