Has to be a '69, Carlo, sorry. Came home from the hospital in '69 in a '69 Cutlass S, but I figure I might as well upgrade myself to a 442 since I'm dreaming anyway :D

But aside from the year, I'd probably be in the market for a ten-footer if I was in the market at all, so you're not far off the mark there.

I'll have to ask my parents what car they brought me home in. I don't remember them mentioning that before.

George

Just received an email from Dad:

You came home in a white, four door Chey. 1952 or 3. We have several pics of the car because we had it on our wedding day...

Strange. I don't recall seeing pictures of that car, but I probably have and just didn't notice it as anything unusual.

I would have guessed a Chevy Impala from around 1962, give or take a couple years, as I remember seeing pictures of me standing (just barely, and wearing diapers) next to that car in our driveway, next to a hose and a bucket of soapy water. I wasn't much bigger than the bucket!

But, as pl8ster can attest, I'm sure, my parents went through lots of cars when we lived in Vermont, because they'd rust so fast you could almost watch it happening.

There's something really peculiar about those photos. Here's where they seem to have been taken (https://goo.gl/maps/Ui4KthLNb5y)--the parking spots don't look all that big, really. :? The lines have been repainted since that streetview, obviously (look at the ADA spot), so I guess they made them quite a bit longer? The overhead view (https://goo.gl/maps/4qTUs7EBvvF2) looks similar.

GB
February 29th, 2016, 03:13 AM
In the Earth view, some of the lines look twice as long as the cars, so... I believe the parking spots in that park are a bit oversized.

Kchrpm
February 29th, 2016, 05:00 AM
Due to it's location, I wonder if those spots are meant to accommodate trucks with boat trailers. Or perhaps they just made them extra long because of the changing angles.

It's probably one of those custom coach scenarios where a bunch of cars were bought in '65 but not built and titled until '66. So, it's probably legitimately a '66, but built from '65 parts. :)

novicius
February 29th, 2016, 10:11 AM
Slap me for saying this but I don't get the price -- the '70-72 Cutlass 442 was always more iconic in my perception. Note that I haven't checked Hemmings for values or anything.

Unless the '70-'72's are even more expensive, of course. :D

Phil_SS
February 29th, 2016, 12:24 PM
30 grand for that 442...sigh.

I'd say that is more economical compared to a few years ago.

And it actually enters into an interesting conversation. How long will the 60's muscle cars hold their value? Of course the truly rare will hold and increase in value but as the people who grew up with these cars start to move on and die I would bet they are going to come down in price.

Basically, are millennials aka Fast and Furious generation even interested in these cars. Of course there will be some but I'm thinking the percentage is pretty low. And cars like the MKIV Supra, Integra Type R and Skyline will hold a much higher value for them.

Kchrpm
February 29th, 2016, 01:12 PM
Good question. It will be a race to see what happens first: prices going down from disinterest, or the cars falling apart from neglect due to disinterest.

My coworker actually owns this:

I made the mistake of mentioning it to my better half last night, and she said "I really loved the Audi."

In typical poor-TSG-decision-making fashion, I am considering buying it from him to replace.... the Fiat.

1. I know the history of the thing for several years. It had an extended warranty, so EVERYTHING was attended to by 2Bennett. Timing chain, power steering pump, valve covers, everything. IIRC $4000 in deductibles and almost $10k in actual bills. All of it.
2. S4 Avant
3. Although she is VERY excited about it, I have strong reservations of the girl's ability to manage an S4. I'm not even remotely worried about her "crashing" it, but intensely worried about her running over things. 18" BBSs and potholes and stuff.

I feel like you've already mentioned the solution to the issues of maintenance and depreciation: having a kick-ass, well known shop nearby that has and will keep it in excellent condition, waiting for the next Audi wagon fanatic to have twins and a post college job.

I can't afford 2Bennett. Actually, I can't afford anyone working on my cars. $100+/hr adds up to my salary quick-fast.

I'm ultimately not worried about the maintenance issues - I'm worried about catastrophic failure - mostly the transmission since the engine has been pretty well taken apart and put back together. Slightly concerned about the suspension = 120k on an Audi is sphincter-puckering control arm time. But, if I limit my exposure and she doesn't run over anything..... ;)

I'm told I can get a "really good deal" on it. I sure hope it's $5,000!

13 grand for that?

Granted, that particular example looks as if it has lived a hard life for having such low claimed mileage, and it's and only 2WD - always a negative in 'stonerado, where it's snowing again as I type this. I'm sure you can relate, living in Methaine. :p

But I've always liked plain-jane and often government-spec work trucks such as crew cab pickups before the late '90s or early '00s when they became family vehicles, and 3/4 ton and 1-ton step-sides, too. You (or at least I) just don't see many of them anymore, or back when they were new, either.

This is perhaps a better choice, and with a lower asking price, too:

No, I don't think I'd ever seen that one before, but those did look like Pontiac wheels to me. I wouldn't complain if it was given to me :)

And I had a FSJ with that 258 six - mine was an automatic, but I imagine the manual would wake it up a little.

They look like painted Rally II wheels to me, but you prompted me to do some research on Magnum 500s because I thought each manufacturer put their own slight spin on that design, but it looks like they were all pretty much the same except for the center caps.

Back in 2004, when my wife and I got serious about moving to Colorado, I told (okay...yeah, yeah, married guys...asked) her, "You understand, I'm gonna drive a pickup truck again once we get out west, okay?"

I think what I had in mind was something like this. But, then again, I thought we'd live in the Middle Of Nowhere, not in the Sea Of Rooftops. Oh well, I can't complain too much, but I do like this truck. I'd like it even more for, say, around $2500.

novicius
April 25th, 2016, 10:32 AM
Pretty close?? PRETTY CLOSE?? It doesn't get any closer than that -- take the shot, Ice!

Fully agree about the earlier Camaros being better -- but that kind of misses the point of Ol' Janky there. Might as well wish for a mint '70 Chevelle or something. A Corvette LSX into a nasty '75? Who does that?? :D

thesameguy

Here's the thing:

The thing is:

There's just one thing:

Thing of it is:

Thirteen large for a custom car that doesn't actually have the cachet of a lower-priced but inherently special GTA kinda misses the mark for me. The 6-speed is definitely cooler than the 700R4, *but* I could probably "justify" an automatic GTA as a car for the girl to drive right now. Like, probably. Maybe. In a way. Really, I think I'd rather have a legitimate GTA. :)

2002 Trans Am WS6 - $14000 (Oregon, WI) (https://madison.craigslist.org/cto/5565277290.html)

For sale is a 2002 Trans Am, 6 speed, 5.7 liter LS1. Black exterior and interior, t-tops, all stock except for Eibach lowering springs and aftermarket muffler. Stock wheels have been plasti-dipped so can be peeled from the factory chrome wheels if preferred. New rotors and pads were installed at around 60,000 miles when I purchased the car. Fresh Mobil 1 Synthetic oil change just done. Typical door panel crack on both panels (driver's side "fixed") and clear coat is bubbling on the hood. Both very common problems with these F-body cars.

No, certainly not that specific vehicle. But I can surely appreciate that one, and hope I find something similar someday.

My current commute (to the train station) is 2.5 miles each way, and I'm thinking that opens up a whole new world to consider of unreliable old wrecks to drive from my garage at home to a nicely covered parking garage at the station.

It's also possible it might be derived from this:

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/search/cto?query=2003%7C2004+focus

If I could find an '03/'04 Focus with a 2.3l and a 5-speed, I'd think real hard about buying it and having another go at convincing her to commute in a manual. She likes those 1st gen cars (I do too), and I can't think of many manual cars easier to drive than a Focus. Frankly, I'd consider a Zetec, but the Duratec is quicker and gets better mileage. This entire endeavor would be aimed at eventually convincing her she needs a FiST. :D

Thing is, she conceptually likes the FiST already - it's not the car that's the sale, it's the transmission. If we're gonna get there, I just need to find a car with a manual that she can be comfortable in. The Celica was not it, too peaky and the 6-speed was too much. It could almost be the Fiero, but the lack of power steering and the fact even a FiST dwarfs it creates a sort of overwhelming driving experience - cranking 225s over while finding first and someone in a gigantic Fusion grows impatient is rough, I admit.

Someday soon I'm going to make her drive the XR4Ti. It was laid up when we last tackled this, but it's a fairly easy drive - the Triax is easy to use, the clutch is very light, the steering wonderfully overboosted. The power curve is a little rough, but as long as we keep the revs low she'll never find out about it. :D The driving position may be a concern, especially for her - the pedal:wheel ratio quite frankly sucks, and it'll be worse for her with relatively long legs and a short torso. I really need to get a 1-2" spacer on the steering wheel!

My search sucks. Nobody seems to comment that their V70, Fit, Mazda3, or A3 is a hatch or wagon. Probably others I've overlooked. Poop.

Also, Volvo Vxx prices are FAR better in SoCal. Seems like lots more of them down there, maybe competition has driven down prices. That's how it was with Saabs back in the '90s!

Edit: http://sacramento.craigslist.org/search/cto?query=hatch*%7Cwagon%7Cv70%7Cv50%7Cmazda3%7Cfi t%7Ca3%7Cavant%7Cmini&min_price=3000&max_price=7000  :lol

Edit 2: Started thinking again about a lyin', cheatin' dieselwagen, so did some checking on the latest news. Seems like VW has acknowledged the early cheater cars will never be fixable to the point they're legal in the US, and possibly not even Europe. They'll probably end up scrapped. The number tossed around is $5,000-$10,000 for a buyback, but due to the insane resale prices on these cars you can't find them for that. I suspect there are going to be some very upset owners - especially those people that don't realize there's a problem and are buying 2009 Sportwagens for $12k right this second.

Performance is a little underwhelming. As much as I like the 850R for what it is, I'd be hard pressed to choose a '95 Volvo wagon over an '05 Volvo wagon. Take the neat factor out and you're left with what's probably a non-choice. I guess if you believe the hype the advantage of the older car is no annoying body control module that won't let you do anything without a scan tool. There's that. I'd probably use a newer Volvo purchase to justify buying a cloned Volvo FCR thingy from China.

I've even fancied the idea of a 4-door, for more ease of use. I'm playing with the idea of using this for a DD when I am driving again.

Oh, I've had my share of special search words over the years, but lately I just go to the Denver CL, type in 1999 as the maximum year to weed out all the ordinary newer cars we all see plenty of still driving around, and type "rare" in the search field. That's usually all it takes to find some cool stuff. Try it.

I occasionally use dates to further search things that I (and usually others here) like, such as "van" and "wagon" (gets old Dodge Power Wagons as well as station wagons) with 1980 as the maximum year, and I'll look for Fleetwoods now and then, and set both min and max years to 1969 and search "Olds*" to find pl8ster's Cutlass that someday he'll fly out here to buy and then drive home, but usually "rare" does the trick.

Others I've used include obvious ones like "classic", "resto*", "unique", "garage*", and so forth, but here are two others I've had good luck with in the past when I had more time to play around with CL. One is "original", but for this I click on the "search titles only" option. That gets all the "53,000 original miles!" and similar claims and avoids all the discussion of original hubcaps or whatever in the text of the ads. "Miles" in in the title only works too, because I figure with an older upper-year limit, if someone is mentioning mileage in the title, than it's probably a low-mileage and therefore nicer older car.

Another good one has been has been "paint*" with an older maximum year, and not only in the title. This gets original paint, custom paint, needs paint, recently painted, and other things that tend to be more interesting than just scrolling through page after page of ordinary, boring cars. YMMV.

Whatever you search, don't forget to click "include nearby areas".

Here are some from searching "rare" < 1999 and "wagon" < 1980 today.

Nicely said, D. I know what you mean, and that's why I try to give more than I take here, if only in this one thread.

Random, I also wondered about that jackstand. Perhaps it's a rusted-through and collapsed shock tower on that side, and they need to keep the fender from resting on the tire for sales purposes? But under the hood doesn't indicate that.

Yet I did see the bullhorn/PA system speaker and imagined Homer Simpson with his Mr. Microphone telling some hot babes on the sidewalk he'll be back to pick them up later.

The mileage is a little low for the price, but not much. When I was in charge of sending 996 ads to my coworker the range for "nice driver" was $12k to $16k, with mileage from around 80k to 120k. This was six to eight months ago, and back then this would have been about a $15k car.

Edit: He since got s big fat bonus for a huge case and it shopping 991.2s.

You might break even, probably won't make a profit. 996 prices are still falling. I've seen a few beaters under $10k.

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/5647429265.html

$10,500, and it's not even really much of a beater, just high mileage.

If you're looking for a safe, short-term owner I'd do a 996.2 or 997.1, just based on what I've seen.

That is a Cabriolet with an Automatic. You can't get any worse in terms of resale value.

I'd say a Coupe with a Manual is a bit different animal. I can't see him losing money on the deal. Like you said, that is 15k car.

Yeah, it's weird to see those being offered for less than 3000GT VR-4's.

Nothing wrong with a Tiptronic 911, especially at that price.

There is not a lot of price variation for body style or options. My one-minute search returned that one. In a few days there will be some other $10k 911. Point is, there were no $10k cars a year ago. Now there are. Used to be 996.1s over $20k. Now there aren't. Prices are still falling. I think it's unlikely they will ever go back up. Maybe the '99s, first water-cooled, pre DBW and LSD could be desirable. If you want a Porsche, get one, they're nice cars. But if you think you're going to not "lose" money or make money, you will be disappointed.

I don't really recall what you had into it dollars-wise (though I feel like a couple grand more than that), but around here that seems slightly low for the car you had... like, you could have held out for more, but fair to have it gone. God knows I've taken less than ideal just to move metal. ;)

I was in it for a touch over twenty.

It went to a friend, and was paid off before my accident. Which means i dodged paying the payment, and insurance right before I played chicken with a road sign.

For the record, I won that battle.

A nationwide search of Auto Trader shows that the cheapest 99-01 996.1 Coupe with a manual is 15k. That car blew up it's engine and now has a new one. The next lowest is 17.5k.

I still stand by statement that if KB could get that car for 11k and drove it for a few months ,say 6 months, he could easily get his money back. From what I'm seeing that car would be a 15k to 18k car. Just because you can find a 10K 996.1 Porsche does not automatically mean that every 996.1 is now completely overpriced and a money pit regardless of style, transmission, condition and mileage.

BTW, that ad was flagged for removal due to it looking like it was a scam because the price was far below market value.

Well, all I can say is that Autotrader is typically not the place you find deals, that's where you go to spend top dollar. I would also point you to our own Godson, who sold his manual 996 for $14.5k and it was fully caught up on maintenance.

Two minutes on California CL:

and here is your weekly $10k beater 911 - http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/cto/5700914042.html (which is both a coupe and manual, so...)

Seriously, autotrader has become the place for dealers and people who don't know any better. There's a reason we have a CL finds and not an autotrader finds. There aren't any. :P

You can stand by your statement if you like, but there is sufficient contrary evidence to suggest it's a maybe, not a sure thing. As a guy who buys and sells a lot of cars, I wouldn't do it.

And all those examples are at least 1500 dollars more expensive and/or have more miles. :thppt: The examples that are the closest are 3-5k more expensive.

I say we get KB to buy one of these and find out.:D

Really? I've never bought a used car private party at quite that price, but I've sold a couple. Buyers have always brought cash without being prompted.
