Paging TSG to the white courtesy phone for two fabulous finds from your most wanted list (at least as I remember it).

First, a 4-door '62 Imperial. It comes with everything except a shovel to dig it out of its...um...parking spot/resting place.

1962 imperial la baron coachwork - $3500 (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5955087635.html)

https://images.craigslist.org/00J0J_jHvufSKAG2m_600x450.jpg

https://images.craigslist.org/01616_bw0xSU3p2h7_600x450.jpg

But wait, there's more!

You can forget the shovel. Here's that 3/4-ton 4x4 Travelall you've been looking for, complete with a winch to pull the Imperial out of the muck.

REDUCED INTERNATIONAL TRAVELALL 4X4 V8 392`OBO - $5000 (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5938622371.html)

https://images.craigslist.org/00404_cVmagXO52Me_600x450.jpg

Trailer hitch already installed.

https://images.craigslist.org/00404_fsYF0xkegWg_600x450.jpg

And, it's equipped with a Cadillac steering wheel, so you'll feel right at home.

What more could a fella want? :D

Man, you have outdone yourself! A manual 4x4 3/4 ton 392 Travelall is THE SHIT. Had I not just spent that exact amount of money on the Aero, I'd be using up some Southwest miles.

Well, maybe not, I feel like a trip over the Rockies in the dead of winter would be the opposite of road trip fun.

Can you find more in spring?

I have always liked the Stag, but I can't for the life of me figure out why someone would put a Volvo 2l in there. At the very least, use a Saab motor since the OE mill and the Saab block are related! Truly, though, so many interesting powerplants could be there, but a non-turbo Volvo? Pity!

I had the s2k when I was 21. I wanna say I sold it in April of 07. I bought Bertha, and a white '95 m3 (Sabine). Had it for a year and a half, then it was totaled. Bought the black '95 M3 (Hans) in February of '09. Yukon Denali was purchased in May of '14, M3 sold in July. I bought the 911 in March of '15, and sold the Yukon the same time. Sold the 911 June 11th of '16. Bought my 2012 f150 platinum in September of '16.

Personally, I'd prefer a billiard ball shifter. A ball with the same number as gears would be neat - 3, 4, 5, 6, etc. Or, better yet, maybe a real baseball as a shifter knob with the leather and stitching for a good grip. I wonder if you can drill a baseball and epoxy in a threaded insert. Deep thoughts, indeed.

I wonder if you can drill a baseball and epoxy in a threaded insert. Deep thoughts, indeed.

Generally reliable, unnecessarily complex (two water pumps, really?), a fair number of fairly expensive components (not atypical of contemporaries, though). Transmissions are pretty good, though IIRC the clutch a little undersized. In a MkIV, you're more likely to be plagued with annoying door locks and window regulators and other doodads. Typical VAG suspension costs. Most stuff is available cheaply in the aftermarket which is nice - bazillions of MkIVs that share the bulk of their bits is nice. Some stuff doesn't wear very nicely - the soft-touch plastics for example, but that stuff shouldn't be a problem on such a low mileage car. On the upside, they're pretty safe and the Jettas came with curling irons and blow dryers. Also, four bills gets you VCDS (nee VAG-COM) which is every bit as good as the factory tool for diagnosis & programming... and you'll want that. Although not an inspiring drive, I think you could do a LOT worse than MkIV. They were probably the best small VWs, maybe tied with the MkIV. Before and after, they were much cheaper cars.

thesameguy
February 3rd, 2017, 10:22 AM
You made me think real hard - MkIV vs. 9-3. Very similar cars long-term. Given a VR6 with a manual and a 9-3 with a manual and ACC, I'm not sure which I'd choose. I think the B20x is the better motor from a reliability and maintenance perspective, but DI cassettes and throttle bodies are kind of a drag. Hmmmm.

GB
February 3rd, 2017, 11:24 PM
I think I've kind of ruled out the NG900/OG9-3 for him. A decent 9-3SS manual would still be a possibility, though. Well, "ruled out" is maybe too strong a phrase... but they're not really included in my searching anymore.

I'm still just throwing things at the wall to see what sticks... no rush. Thanks for your thoughts on the VR6. :toast:

We will be selling this very soon, 2006 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport.
2221
Fun, good-looking car, dealer maintained, driven by responsible adults, never abused or modified. 5-speed manual, 173 hp from the factory, ~96,000 miles on the odo.

We were just going to trade it in for the Forester, but we could both benefit from a private sale. We get more money than a trade and you get a good price. Wanna talk? :D

Edit: Actually, based on the other listings you have been posting, it is probably outside your price range.

While I haven't set an actual hard cap, I need to stay within my "cash sale" range. Which is also a bit fluid... under $4000 for sure, $3000 is better, $1500 would be PERFECT. :D

The Dealer said moisture was found near the DWS Module and that the car has to be dried out then the DWS replaced. $1200. the unit itself costs $250 from them. I took it to a "BMW Guy" to fix it and unlock the stuck front right passenger door. He ordered a key. Said he had the computer to do the job and tried. After months of trying he couldn't get it started and got the door open only to mistakenly half close it and now it won't completely open or close. Need an Alternative starting system."

That's the type of terrifying non-sense that scares me away from a formally $100k car still in good condition being sold for a few grand.

Her expenses in the last 18 months include oil changes and tires, which as far as I'm concerned is super... 18 months of driving for ~$1500 is all win. Well, at least it is in this context. If it was $1500 that went into a $7,000 car that was still running that would be cool, but when you lack the financial wherewithal to reach for that $7k car, you get what you get. ;)

These really are not daily drivers. You need to have a reliable 2nd vehicle to use while you spend time and money sorting out whatever is wrong with these cars.

The flaw in my plan turns out to be that "Wow, you lucked out and got 18 months from a $1200 car" has been interpreted as "You can always buy $1200 cars and drive them carefree for 18 months."

Also, my September, 2016 "Hey, you've been driving this car carefree for a year and should really start looking for something else while you still have the luxury of a working automobile" warning was twisted into "Don't do anything until the last possible minute, good cheap cars are super easy to find whenever you want one."

And my, "You know, if you don't have time to look for something I'm selling this Santa Fe which has the benefit of my loving treatment and personal endorsement, and I'll give you a sweetheart deal on it" was heard as "I'll sit on this Hyundai as long as necessary, whenever and if ever you decide you want it."

She apparently thinks she can spend two full thousand dollars this time and get something twice as good. This weekend.

Anywho, anybody know anything about 1st gen Civic Hybrids? They're almost irresponsibly cheap.

No, but let me know what you find if you look into it. It never crossed my mind as I assumed all used Civics in good condition cost more than a 5-Series BMW.
The 8th gen (2006-2011) are almost as cheap and have those awesome futuristic wheels that were probably designed in the 80's.

thesameguy
February 10th, 2017, 11:40 AM
Yeah, the LSJ had a pretty short lifespan as GM ultimately switched to turbos and the LNF from the Sky/Solstice ended up in the Cobalt SS and Ion Redline, then in the Regal and everything else. The LSJ just wasn't enough - but the turbo Cobalt SS won a lot of respect from magazines. R&T said "The Cobalt SS may be the most underrated car in the world" which is pretty solid praise. It always suggested to me that the SS setup itself was pretty solid, and it was only the underwhelming supercharger that held it back.

I think it probably the awful interior materials and blah styling that ruined the Cobalt and Ion - with a good platform (Delta), good motors (Ecotecs), and good transmissions (F23 or AF23) they were mechanically very good. I suspect they make for a solid used car.

The Civic Hybrid is also interesting. I think it suffers from being an also-ran (vs. the Prius) and, frankly, it wasn't much fun to drive. The 2nd gen IMA feels incredibly unrefined and the 7th & 8th gen regular Civics felt pretty appliance-y already. Those Civic Hybrids probably appeal to nobody. I just wonder if they are reliable, or what the cost of maintaining them is like... puts the fear in me that they cost the same or less than a comparable gas-only model. Makes me wonder if something like battery reliability is poor or something.

The Civic hybrids would probably be okay, if there wasn't a Prius to compare them to.

The reviews I've read on them tended to follow the pattern "just isn't cheap enough to run given what a slug it is". Prius' tend to get reviews "boring as hell, but at least they are cheap to run".

Having purchased a Prius in the last month, I've obviously read rather more hybrid car reviews in the last month than in the entire rest of my life added together.

My review of my Prius is that it is better than I expected in basically every way. Also that it totally changes your driving goals, courtesy of all the different geeky fuel economy related displays.

On all my previous cars regardless of how small / dull / slow they might have been, my goal on any given decent duration trip was to attempt to stick at the absolute maximum speed under the getting a ticket threshold (100k limit here, 105 gets you a ticket during holiday season, 110 gets you a ticket during any other time, failing the attitude test gets you a ticket always), so as to achieve the shortest possible travel time. So any speed limit transition say from 50k to 100k zone would see me go heavy acceleration the moment I cross the speed limit change to get to my 104 or 109k speed goal, and attempt to maintain that speed up any hill.

The Prius on the other hand, my goal became fuel economy. Cruise control set at 100k, gradual acceleration, accepting that I might not do 104 or 109 up any given hill.

Basically the car has instantly brainwashed me, though the various displays telling me how to drive economically. Apparently I only require a light rinse cycle to achieve brainwashed.

thesameguy
February 10th, 2017, 03:02 PM
I had the same experience in the Fiat. The entire goal of driving became "how little electricity can I use" and I was always shocked at my ability to drive real slow.

But, in this case, Prius vs. Civic Hybrid isn't the discussion - it's cheap transportation. I'm sure a Prius is superior in every measurable way (driven several examples of each), but a 2x cost puts a Prius out the running entirely. There is no such thing as a $3000 Prius that isn't either wrecked or well past a quarter of a million miles. Or both.

What little research I've done has netted that the pre-2010 Civic Hybrid has IMA battery issues (+4k USD). That would explain why tsg sees them for half the price as the Prius (I a smaller, but still significant difference).
How's the trunk/boot of the Prius. Saw a new one from a distance last week and it looked huge, though I'm not sure if it was the regular Prius or the big one (V?)

The trunk / boot size in the Prius (mine's a 2010) is really good. Also good leg space for passengers.

My biggest complaint with the Prius is that goofy A-pillar/portal thing. I never got used to it.

Just the portal and its kickstand? Or the big A-pillar? (accustomed to no airbags, all recent A-pillars to me are an obstruction)

I was curious too and asked in Hangouts, he said the area above the mirror where there is additional glass area instead of the mirror being mounted there. I hadn't noticed it before, but have since found a similar design on other cars.

At least they used actual glass. Some carmakers just put black plastic in that spot even without a mirror.

A little ironically, it's not even a VTEC motor, but since it's a whole subframe swap the Honda world is your Honda oyster. A B16/18-powered MkI is probably cooler than the same swap on a CRX (which is only cool in the US, where we didn't get VTEC CRXs at all :) )

That'd be my guess.

I suspect he had or had access to a wrecked base model Civic and used it as the donor. There are not many higher-end EGs available in California these days - the selection of wrecks is probably quite small. Plus, like he said in the ad the clip swap is the hard part - future engine swaps just aren't that big of a deal. We did the B18C swap in my friend's CRX in a weekend! Those little Honda motors are so darned cute!

I'd probably have done the same... I mean, what I really wanted was a 2002+ Ranger with a 2.3l and a manual transmission, but what fell in my lap was an '05 Focus with a 2.0l and an automatic. :D The $1000+ I saved on the Focus vs. a insurance-auctioned Ranger will easily buy the stuff I didn't get.

thesameguy

Not saying it couldn't be done, but clipping a $500 Civic wreck and then doing some welding is a lot different than clipping a $500 Civic and then buying $2000 worth of B16 & fuel injection on top. A lot of the people that have the mad skillz to do that type of body work don't have an extra $2000 lying around. (I lack both the mad skillz and the $2000!). I can definitely get behind spending $500 on an experiment and seeing if it works before spending the next $2000. I'd be really hesitant to throw $2500 at a project unless I was 100% sure it'd work... the people that do that are (IMHO) the same people that end up with half-built cars sitting in their driveway and eventually post the "Unfinished project, would have been bad ass but lost interest and/or ran out of money, all parts there, you just need to build it!" ad. And, really, the *only* thing lost as this got done is two days of engine-swapping work. Not a big deal. I fully support this approach. The welding is the experiment - fitting any Honda engine ever made onto an EG subframe is *solved*.

(And, selfishly, in 2017 a B-series swap is nutso... ZC is the easy button.)

novicius

Mine still stacks up favorably price-wise, which is nice. When I was shopping, I consciously and purposefully bought a V8/5-speed with the intentions of taking it to fun-run nights at the "local" drag strip and maybe bracket racing one day. But as Keith astutely points out, I really am a terrible driver!

(So anything that mechanically removes me even further from the contact patches is a good thing. )

Ultimately I'm not selling mine anytime soon, just window-shopping -- but if I did, I'd definitely try out the auto. I've read good things about the J-mod on the 4R70W. (http://www.americanmuscle.com/what-is-a-j-mod.html)

I really don't like it when people put hot rod interiors on cars. I think probably the best thing about old cars is the interior - there was so much more style and class put into even basic people movers that we get these days, doing away with those details seems a travesty. :(

One of my coworkers spent his bonus last year on a really nice red V8 convertible... I honestly don't care for it. I'm sure a literal fortune could be spent at TCI on various things, but there is nothing reassuring about the driving experience. It sounds fantastic, but all that does is egg me on and then I'm disappointed by everything - brakes, steering, suspension - all of it! I'd take my 97hp (if) Falcon any day of the week. It has the same awful brakes, steering, and suspension but nothing under the hood encourages anything beyond a quiet cruise. ;) I'm a little concerned about how I'll feel with the eventual 150hp Duratec swap, forget something actually potent! Indeed there was.

I've been enamored with a well setup fox body Saleen after seeing one that is owned by a long time Steel Cities/NHSCC member, George Chabal. When I started competing, 2002ish, his car would take fast time of the day almost every week*. But then the whole HP wars started and the EVOs and STIs were released and it slowly moved down the leaderboard. But up until that point, even though it was 15-16 years old it was an awesome machine to watch.

*The other car that would compete with him was Kent Rafferty's Supra (His Supra is the reason I want a MKIV, nothing to do with F&F)

'68 Torino,  just because.

One of my aunts in Mexico had a white Brasilia of that vintage decades ago. I remember it stranding us by the side of the road one summer day... worn throttle cable, I believe? No A/C either, which made for no fun times whenever we had to run errands (every day in the summer).

Likely. Throttle and clutch cables would snap in those older VWs, around the time the cars were teenagers or in their twenties (when I could afford them). I have True Adventure Stories of driving (yes, driving!) my VW Beetle home with a broken throttle cable and the help of a friend and another of driving (yes, driving!) a Beetle to the shop with a broken clutch cable. As a public service, I won't bore you guys with them unless popular demand requires it, but I did learn to carry spare cables along with an ever-increasing variety of tools and other parts and of course the "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive For The Compleat Idiot" book in the car for roadside repairs.

Two things: That Packard has an Ultramatic transmission - A very early automatic, which is a trainwreck to get/keep going. Seriously, talking to Packard guys the recommendation is to either send it to the literally one guy in the country who rebuilds them (and is scheduled for something like 5 years in the future, or - the faster and more economical route - replace it with the three-on-the-tree manual out of a salvage car. Also, all those packard guys start having strokes if you suggest a swap to something non-original.
Second - That TVR seems like it would probably be a nightmare as well. Like seriously, my marriage would likely end and I'd end up dead on the side of the road, under the TVR because my heart gave out while trying to adjust the shifter linkage or something. I want it.

From Hemmings: 1974 FMC 2900R motor home (https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/fmc/2900r/1920294.html?refer=blog)
It says a different engine(SBC) was installed instead of rebuilding the original but details on it are vague other than "performance engine including industrial heads and bronze valve guides, etc etc."
I thought FMC only did fire trucks and construction equipment. You learn something new every day.

Those are really cool motorhomes - I was trying really hard to buy one in San Diego but the sellers were super flaky. After about two months (!!!) I gave up trying and bought the Southwind.

The FMCs were really neat - you'll notice the house AC is integrated into the body instead of being mounted on top like most RVs. They had four wheel independent suspension! I seem to recall the bodies are not fiberglass, either.

They were super expensive new, but forty large is about twice what a nice one of these goes for normally.

Edit: Where are you seeing an SBC swap?

speedpimp
March 7th, 2017, 01:46 PM
I just presumed it was an SBC. More info on the engine would've helped a lot.

thesameguy
March 7th, 2017, 02:34 PM
Yeah, I can't tell what they're saying.

Factory engine - as with most late '60s & early '70s RVs is a Dodge 440. It sort of looks like one from the pictures, but who knows if that's before or after? I can't imagine spending a claimed $75,000 on a motorhome and not spending some of that on an actual swap. A new Hemi, an 8.0l Chevy, or even a 6BT would make gobs of sense. Another '70s-tech motor is just wasting everyone's time.

speedpimp
March 7th, 2017, 02:51 PM
Most definitely a more modern engine and an overdrive trans would've made a lot of sense.

thesameguy
March 7th, 2017, 03:09 PM
Good point - especially the transmission. 3-speeds are the worst thing about old RVs. I guess at least the FMC is a pusher, and you don't have to listen to a big block wailing away at three grand on the highway. :D

Hey TSG - a looooooong time ago you mentioned you were on the lookout for 1940 Ford pickups. In all that time, I've seen exactly one (1) on the Denver CL, but it was beautifully restored and the asking price was about as much as a nice house with a big yard in flyover country. Here's one that's slightly more affordable, if a tad more rustic:

1978 Ford Econoline E-250 4x4 Camper Van - $10000 (https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/6027728230.html)

"Behold, Newman. Newman is our badass camper van. He's a 1978 Ford E-250 that began life as a servant to the USPS in Salida, CO. Whilst under the care of the USPS, he was converted to the 4x4, high-topped beast you see before you. The conversion itself ran nearly $13,000, which your tax dollars happily funded, no doubt."

Up for sale is my 1989 mustang GT sunroof car. This was my pride and joy but I simply don't have time for it anymore. This only has 73,000 documented original miles and it shows. The interior is like new, the body has some dings and chips but its all original. Garaged all its life with all original body panels even the original windshield. I never wanted to sell this but it's time to let it go. I have a binder of recipes and paper work along with a certified appraisal so you could get a bank loan if you needed too. Car appraised for over 10k last year.

1978 CHEVROLET CAMARO - $10600 (https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/6036510439.html)

Camaros from this era used to be everywhere. Now I rarely see one.

This one comes with the fire-breathing 305 V8 and automatic transmission setup. But wait, there's more! How about Santana's Abraxas album on 8-track cartridge? :rawk:

I had a 305, but in a take-it-easy box Caprice. I had almost zero problems with it (gas was just over $1/gal).

sure 250whp is plenty, but you need the whole heads, cam, intake, carb, fuel pump, ... done
meanwhile it'll be embarrassing running a 305 that puts down 90.12 hp on the chassis dyno after headers and dual exhaust
meanwhile, gen2 camaros are underrated, why?

that is plenty (no naws needed), the 100 hp to begin with is the problem. While they're bolt-ons to get you to 300hp it isn't exactly as cheap and easy as 'cold air intake + muffler + cat'
Usually you have to deal with diminishing returns. Getting it to 200hp would be seem like a sweet-spot, but doing it a little bit at a time gets you almost nowhere, fuel, full intake and full exhaust have to be done.

I'm just bitter that my car is buried in a foot of snow out in the street. Even in the summer it's parked a block or two away and doing a simple oil change is a pain at that distance. screw you garage guys

While they're bolt-ons to get you to 300hp it isn't exactly as cheap and easy as 'cold air intake + muffler + cat'
I hear you but for decades I had to hear about how terrible 305's are. Maybe back in the '80s & '90s when you were stuck trying to port & polish the stock heads but TFS aluminum heads solve that issue nicely -- and yes, they're (relatively) expensive as far as Chevy heads go.

But if I owned that silver '78 Camaro George listed? Good, clean and intact cars are getting rare. I'd happily pay $5-7K to mod it while keeping it all numbers-matching, and not care fuck-all about "getting my money out of it".

EDIT: Actually fuck that -- these Trick Flow Systems aluminum heads are $450 (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tfs-3031b001/overview/make/chevrolet)! :angry:Go fuck yourselves, Chevy guys who think aluminum heads are too pricey for a 305! :finger: I'll take that shit ALL DAAAAY!!!

sold it (almost at purchase price) and regretted it, but would also regret it (perhaps less-so) rusting out while driving it a few year

Bloody hell, George. You live in some kind of fairy tale magic car land.

Indeed.

Probably natives of the western states think it's no big deal, but as an east-coast guy most of my life, where I saw cars rust from snow and salt on the roads in New England and rust from salt air and humidity at the Carolina coasts and inland too, I'm pleased to live in an old car paradise.

I dig the Dodge camper van. Less than half the price of a VW camper van + V8 = Win!

Anyone 'round here like disco-era Camaros with 305s? Probably not, but just in case...

EPIC.

I spit upon the 305, but I do love '70s Camaros. I think all the good Camaros came in the '70s, though I have a soft spot for 3rd gen GTAs.

My grandfather drove a Ford panel that was very similar to that '58 for a really long time - definitely into the '70s, but I'm pretty sure into the '80s. Fond memories of that thing - not that I ever rode in it, but it reminds of me of him.

That Cord is sweet. Probably worth well over 100k with a good restore on it.

I have always lusted after a Cord or Delahaye. I would probably buy if it I thought I had even half the skill necessary to do something with it.

*COMES WITH FREE BULLET HOLES (ADDS CHARACTER).
wtf, I thought that was some sort of special, Cord-only innovation. It looks like actual bullet holes (large caliber to boot).

I'd certainly buy the 311k mile (half a million km) Camry if it was from the original (maybe the dealer as well)

Actually, you would think so but they aren't. 4 Door Cords are only going for around 50-60k, even really nice ones. The only Cords that are worth big money are the supercharged coupes and convertibles.

So that person is asking half of what a really nice example is worth on a car that is only worth 50-60k. Aka, he is smoking crack. Only someone who knows all about these cars would maybe buy it because they know they can do all or most of the work themselves. But then, they know the car is only gonna be worth 50-60k. So they aren't going to put there time and effort into a project like that.

I'm bettin that car will be sold for 10-15k at the most.

Didn't know that, Phil. Figured every Cord=decent to big money.
