"in-dash AM radio and AM/FM cassette on the hump"

Interesting. Factory, dealer-added, or aftermarket, I wonder? 1973 seems early for cassette players in cars, so I'm guessing aftermarket, but I don't claim to know.

RE: The Maverick and its hump radio. Definitely aftermarket and added sometime in the 80s(maybe later). Though at one time before that was added, it may have had an FM convertor attached to the bottom of the dash. Great looking car.

RE: F260. According to wiki, an F260 is a 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 4,900lb GVWR.

It says 'completely serviced' but without any qualifying statements I'm dubious that much was done to it after 21 years. Still, this would be pretty awesome once the tires/brakes/fuel system/trans were known to be completely sorted out.

What, you don't want to rock a 255-cube V8?

Summit carries cams for the 4.2L V8 Edlebrock carries intake & heads, carb & headers -- basically everything you can do to a 302 you can do to the 255 (to keep it numbers-matching at least).

How much power do you want?

EDIT: Here's at *least* a $20K example with a fairly monster 302. (http://www.cardomain.com/ride/682277/1979-ford-mustang/) "Power Output = 307 Rear Wheel Horsepower & 278 Rear Wheel Torque."

Why bother?

dodint

The really astounding thing about that Samurai is that it's located on a barrier island like that. When I worked in that environment the sea spray, which is a fine mist that settles hundreds of yards from the break, ruined everything in a matter of a few years.

When you lift the hood on that '79 Cobra, it should look like this:

Classic b00st (http://www.paxtonauto.com/article.php?id=3). :hard:

thesameguy
May 5th, 2017, 10:16 AM
I love the idea of that, but not the reality. I wanna drive the thing, and blow-through carbs, um, blow. Even just a straight-up carbed 255 or 302 is a smog nightmare. At least an injected 5.0, but really, if you're going to swap might as well get something from this century.

novicius
May 5th, 2017, 10:35 AM
Well that car needs a full resto -- and I like period-correct hot rods. :) #shrug

Having the stock 4.2L rebuilt to bit hotter specs making 225-250ish HP would be ideal. Then the Paxton blow-through carb kit? 350+ HP all day! (http://www.mustangandfords.com/how-to/engine/mump-0708-carbureted-289-paxton-supercharger-install/)

thesameguy
May 5th, 2017, 12:47 PM
I'm not sure you can get 225hp out of a 4.2l pushrod and still have the headroom for 10-12psi from a non-intercooled supercharger. Sounds iffy. (Or, I guess, real 'spensive!)

Quiz time!

What vehicle do you first think of when you hear of one having ALL of these fabulous features?

A 4-cylinder engine, automatic transmission, whitewall tires, wire-wheel hubcaps, and a vinyl roof.

The answer is at the bottom of this thread.

But first...finally - a '69 Cutlass for pl8ster that looks halfway decent and isn't crazy expensive!

Uh, you don't mind 4 doors, do you pl8? :D

This 1982 Corvette 98% pure stock has 79K miles, all matching numbers. I'm the 2nd owner. This old show car has not been on the road and has been just setting in my garage over 5 years and needs be sold so the new owner can drive it and enjoy it.

This Corvette is a rare two-tone (D64) paint (silver blue metallic top half with dark blue metallic bottom half) with GM factory striping kit. Interior has blue leather seats, with blue interior. Rare options like AM/FM Cassette player with CB radio, T-Top factory carrier holder.

This Corvette has been garage keep. May need a tune-up and oil change.

Right-click on a photo online and select "Copy image location".

A few years ago, forced to use Internet Explorer only at work, I had to right click and select Properties and then manually highlight and copy the URL, but I think most browsers these days let you right click and copy now, at least on desktop PCs.

Then, paste the photo's URL in between and [/img*], but both without the *. I had to add some other character to make the image tags visible.

Presto!

I don't know much about Saabs, but a 21st-century, four-seat, manual transmission convertible with a $2500 asking price is quite interesting.

My kids would love it. This time of year, when we're out in the car and they see convertibles with the tops down, they always say "Dad! You need to buy a convertible!"

I haven't given it extensive thought, but figured a 4-seat convertible would limit me to a Jeep, a Chrysler Sebring, or an old classic American land yacht. None of appeal to me as a daily driver. Any of those would be fun as a third car, but I don't have the garage space for three cars.

A car like that Saab could solve that problem for me.

You know I bought Charlotte a few months ago and handed her off to a friend - this is the friend that was nearly killed when an Audi ran her over while riding her bike and spent over a year just trying to walk again. We went out for a test drive - due to her back injury she is sensitive to car seats - and about five miles into the drive she said, "I don't think I have ever been in a convertible before." I had her come over a couple weeks ago for an oil change & general checkup, and she commented "I didn't appreciate how great convertibles are. I thought it was a gimmick, but I find myself putting the top down whenever I can." She has gotta be like 35 or 40 now - way too long before having enjoyed a drop top. It's not for everyone, it's not all the time, but it's definitely one of those things you should try as it's great. I shouldn't, but I am seriously thinking about buying that Viggen. I tire of convertibles after a few months of use, but it's been a while (2012?) and I am sure I could make some real money on this purchase.

I used to think the Viggen convertible was stupid, because the suspension and tires are so unforgiving, it has crazy cowl shake when pushed and the body flex is so excessive it's just not a sporty drive, but I realized something earlier this year: Who cares? It's not like the NG900/OG9-3 was some great sports car anyway. All the power, all the room, all the no top... it's a perfect cruiser. I think I'm into that for the summer.

But, if you're not generally attracted to Saabs like I am, I think a CLK is probably the better buy. They are pretty inexpensive, nicely built, and generally reliable. Pretty roomy too. Both the Saab and the Benz are solid 4-season convertibles, but the Benz is demonstrably nicer.

June 6th, 2017, 09:14 AM
Decidedly un-Honda-like maintenance costs, for one. That's an assumption, however.

And wouldn't black leather seats in a convertible be like driving around in a frying pan?

But, all nitpicking aside, that's pretty cool. Had no idea something like that would be within reach. My wife and neighbors would think my mid-life crisis was in full swing if I came home with a Mercedes.

definitely one of those things you should try as it's great.

My wife and I rented a then-new, bright red first gen Chrysler Sebring in June of 1997 and spent two weeks driving from San Diego to San Francisco the scenic way. The top was down 95% of the time and I came home to the east coast (back then) with the kind of tan you can only get out west.

I've also rented a later version of the Sebring convertible, after they got fat and ugly. Okay, but not as much fun as the first one.

Someone in my neighborhood has an early Sebring in nice shape, but I think it's a third car. I still think these are very good looking cars, top up or down.

Well, I'm not in the market for another car right now anyway, and I'm just fooling around in here as usual. I'm nervous of anything as a daily driver that doesn't say Honda or Toyota on it from a reliability & cost-to-operate standpoint, and Chrysler would be second from the bottom of the most least-desired brands on my list - unless we're talking as an extra car for weekend fun, etc.

However, you guys have opened my eyes to Saabs with these posts today. Somewhere along the way - after a few years with my first Japanese vehicle, probably - liquid-cooled European cars became invisible to me.

The "2000 Saab 9-3 Convertible - $3400" link above isn't very confidence-inspiring:

"Saab 93 Convertible, 2000. 2nd owner. 96,000 miles. Engine/turbo replaced with brand new OEM from Mike Shaw dealership at 55,000 miles."

I've known a couple Saab owners and ridden in both of their Saabs. One was an all-black 2-door 900 Turbo with those cool three (wide) spoke wheels that belonged to a friend who I would describe as eccentric. He was a jam band drummer. Nuff said.

The other was an '80s 4-door. I guess a 900 also, but not sporty-looking. That was owned by the CFO of a company - no, I worked at two companies with him, come to think of it - who was an incredible cheapskate. Smart guy. CPA, MBA, and whatever else, but he wore old clothes and drove that Saab for probably the whole eight years I knew him. At one point, and I promise I'm not making this up, rather than get the sagging headliner fixed, he started wearing a wide-brimmed hat while driving. I remember he did get the headliner fixed eventually, but probably only because he got tired of people snickering about it.

Not common, but not unheard of. Y2K-ish Saabs suffered the same sludging problem as similar-year Toyotas and Audis. it affected relatively few cars (compared to Toyota, anyway) but there were recalls and some engine replacements. In 2017 it's not so much of a concern - any car that would have had the problem has probably had it by now or never will.

I just got back from looking at it. Guy definitely does not know what he has, knows nothing about Saabs in general or this one specifically. His story is that his dad is a dealer, he wanted a convertible, his dad purchased this from a CarMax - it came in as a trade, was going to go to auction, but his dad had the hookup and they bought it direct. He's had it for a few months, is tired of driving a stick, wants to keep only his 7-series. I'm not sure that's all on the up and up, but I don't think it's a total fabrication. It has a couple dings, the from airdam is damaged like most Viggens. Wheels have curb rash, also very common. Top is good but not perfect - certainly "California good." Interior is a little dirty - but just a little - and generally quite nice. It has a small oil leak, probably from the valve cover - just dampness around the upper motor, nothing on the ground. It has the "wrong" coolant in it, which isn't uncommon at this point and probably means nothing. Shifter is a bit sloppy and transmission seems to make a little noise. Engine sounds fine and runs well, but boost is really low. Guy made the comment "I can fill it up on $20" which leads me to believe it's running regular unleaded, so that'd explain the boost problem. Could also be something else but since there is no CEL it's probably not serious. AC barely works, which could just be low on refrigerant but speaking from experience could also be total system failure, and replacing that compressor AIN'T NO FUN. When I got there, I turned the key on to hook up the Tech 2 and my Tech 2 wouldn't boot. I assumed Cheap Chinese Clone had already failed, but then found out it had a dead battery. Guy had *just* driven it 20 miles - the cooling fan was still on when I got there - so most likely the battery is hosed but it could be an alternator issue. I don't think that's the case as after I jump I drove it around without incident... probably just the battery. Once we got it running, the Tech 2 connected fine and the only problems logged are the climate control sensor (cheap, common) and the window switch (which did indeed seem gummed up) so that's positive - no ECM, TWICE/DICE, or especially soft top errors. It ran just fine - alignment may be a little off, but felt generally good. When I wrote about cowl shake etc. earlier I forgot how serious it was. Good God it's crazy Saab thought this could compete against anything. I still love it. :D

I think he can sell it for his asking price - someone will be less discriminating than I am. But I am going to make him an offer and see what happens. There is some risk - AC, boost, battery - but not huge. I just need to feel defensible. ;)

On a side note, the car he had before this was a Mercedes CLK550. He said he liked that car better, but it was expensive to drive due to poor fuel economy. He said he sold it with 200k on it and the only problems he ever had were motor mounts failing (expected) and the transmission needed major service (expected on those early 7-speeds). Otherwise, it was totally reliable and never had "real problems."

You want a convertible that's as reliable as you think Toyotas and Hondas are?

In this case, the answer really always is a Miata.

In 1957, my maternal grandparents along with my mom (age 8) and her two sisters (age 15 and age 18) drove from Pittsburgh to Grant's Pass, Oregon in pretty much that exact car. What a trip that must have been in the pre-interstate system era.

Another cool aspect of the story is the reason they made the trip was because my grandfather had been laid off. So he said, "welp, no better time than now to go on a vacation across the US to visit family." So they packed their bags and drove across the US to see my grandmothers family members who had moved to Grant's Pass. Just a different time. :)

A Duratec that doesn't run sounds like a head gasket. Those motors are pretty solid, and that's typically the thing that'd do them in. I've never done the job, but my friend's brother (worked at the Mazda dismantlers) says it's no more work to change a motor than do a head gasket. Around here, those motors are cheap - under $500. If you're interested in tooling up a little it could be a fun project.

Not Craigslist but on my last two trips to Meijer for stuff I've seen this Pontiac sitting in front of a Ford dealer. The Dealer website is kinda ugly but its got all the info.

1985 Pontiac Fiero - $5000 (http://www.bobthomasfordwest.net/used/PONTIAC/1985-PONTIAC-FIERO-31ec9a230a0e0ae7513b8f8515640983.htm?searchDepth=1 :1)

https://pictures.dealer.com/b/bobthomasillinoisroadfortwaynefordfd/1317/4ad74fd1d1583258e50bc2e4a8ee79e1x.jpg

Also the Dodge dealer thats basically next door appears to have a Police Spec charger sitting on the lot for sale. I can't find it on their site but the rims on it are super ugly.

From the "Unsexy Dad" dep't, I've got less than a year left in my current Exploder before I upgrade to another Exploder -- but damn if I didn't wish this had come along 8 months from now:

2003 Ford Explorer "Centennial" Edition - $2000 (https://lacrosse.craigslist.org/cto/6170819644.html)

https://images.craigslist.org/00v0v_8xeZ548muLY_600x450.jpg

I'm fine with a wonky trans; the 5R55E's in these things can die through high mileage so paying out to put in a reman'd trans on Day 1 of purchase would be just fine with me.

I just want my next Exploder to have a near-perfect body with zero rust! :finger:

Just make sure you buy in early spring or early fall... so people aren't thinking about snow or boat season. Trying to buy 4WD vehicles gets tough as summer & winter kick off. It actually might be better to shop SoCal or the bay area, where "4WD truck" isn't quite so much an identity issue.

Can you handle speed? Would you like great handling in a true exotic Sports Car? Do you like attention?
Are you in love with the looks of a early Porsche but put-off by primitive 65 mph VW power plants and 4 speed transmissions typically offered with KitCars.
ONE-OFF //////1 owner/builder (32 years), over 125K to build. Titled as a 1956 Porsche.
Hand built fiberglass (wide wheel-well RSR) body, 1956 Porsche 356 Speedster (not in the class of kit cars). It's crotch-rocket motorcycle quick and fast.
Gorgeous high-end built Speedster with only 9000 miles! Expertly built and maintained and she runs beautifully. Fully equipped with power steering, power seat, German stay-fast canvas both tounno cover and top with boot along-with polished stainless-steel and burled walnut and mahogany trim throughout with carbon fiber accents to complement the comfortable interior. The car will fit you like a glove! There is more than can be said here about the creature comforts and some of the other particulars including the powerful 350 hp engine and the Porsche 5 speed w/overdrives, which rockets the car from zero to 60 in under 4 seconds! Drives like a Formula 1 race car and takes corners at an incredible 1.9 G's. YES!... the wheel-wells are polished aluminum as with the 19 gallon fuel cell (see photos). Warning; If you're into exotics and decide to purchase this beast, be prepared for the appreciative types to approach you with requests to take photographs of themselves posing with your Porsche.. Also be prepared for camera flashes when you drive the Porsche at night. I have the title in hand ! Please feel-free to contact me if you would like to see the car (SoCal) or with any questions you may have (619-865-0961).
If you would love to see the Porsche just toyin with a Mustang, call or write and I'll give you my video link.
You're lookin at $55K. to own this bab-magnet... (*and that's a REAL bargain!).

May have something to do with the tub. The Fiero's is also on the outside... because the fuel tank is on the inside. I'm not sure what Volvo's reasoning would be - possibly just "why not" as back then most cars had foot-activated brakes so keeping it on the outside may have made sense.

As a parent, I sometimes think about what I was doing when I was my kids' age. Well, when I was the age my kids are now, my dad worked for a custom van company. I have lots of his pictures of finished products and vans-in-progress in the shop, too. I need to scan 'em and share them with you guys. I haven't looked at them in a very long time, but I KNOW I still have them and remember there are some pics in the factory of guys with long hair and huge '70s sideburns airbrushing sci-fi scenes on panel vans, installing shag carpet, cutting crescent-moon windows in the sides, and so forth.

I have snowmobile racing pics from the same era that I'll get around to one of these years...

NZ is getting an influx of 20 year old "day vans" coming in as imports from the USA.

I work in modified vehicle certification, and these things are fucking deathtraps. Seatbelts screwed into plywood floors. Shonky as hell rotating captains chair style seats. Strengthening members hacked out of sides of vans to put bigger windows in. Half the strength taken out of the roof by just having the roof rails butchered to bits for high top roof fitouts. Good lord. For a country that loves to sue people, wow some of your modified vehicles are just awesome level bags of crap, given that these are almost mass produced modifications to vans.

^^^ glad you're a fan.

A sneak peak into my archives is below. Gosh, my wife and kids need to leave town more often. I can actually go from place to place within the house and do whatever I like without constant (but good, normal, family-type) interruptions.

Normally I load pics to photobucket.com, but that site is acting a little strange lately, so I've attached it here within the forum. Sorry to everyone who has to log in just to see it.

My uncle used a mid-70s Dodge van for his carpet business way back when. It seemed that most carpet installers favored the Dodges.

Leon, they did the "high roof" conversion on minivans as well.

Yeah, I really like the look of it. Pity it's an old carby engine. They're probably only good for maayyyyyybe 140kw or so, so you'd get a really driveable car with good torque, but not exciting.

If the bodyshell is as good as it looks in the photos, it's actually really sharply priced too.

Carb shouldn't be the problem, it would be the compression & cam IMO.

I've owned at least 3 carb'd V8s and once they were rebuilt (by me!) the carbs were never the bottleneck to power.

Leon
July 30th, 2017, 07:24 PM
You can make any engine powerful, it's just the tradeoff between your budget, and your desire for reliability.

If they'd put a Toyota 4.0 V8 in it, it would be a much better car, than a heavily modified 308 would be. In fact, if they'd put an SR20DET in it, it would have been even better.

I had a Subaru like that, even down to the gold colour.

It was a *horrible* vehicle. Zero power. The roof literally rusted off at the A and B pillars. I had race tape holding the roof down on the A-Pillar, otherwise the roof flapped at highway speeds.

Had surprisingly good offroad abilities and approach angles though. Pity that the total lack of power limited your play offroad options very seriously.

Hoffman was the official importer before BMW set up their own shop in the US.

He is largely the reason why there is a 2002 in the first place. When the 1600-2 came out he was begging BMW to put in a bigger engine. They put in a hotter engine, the 1600ti but that ended up not passing emissions or something. Meanwhile, in Germany, a BMW exec had the 2.0 liter M10 installed in his own 1600, and it happened to be in for service at the same time as ... I don't remember the specifics anymore. :D

The engine made the same power as the hot 1.6 liter but with more torque. Marriage made in heaven.

Considering the history, lineage and power of the ChryCo turbo 2.2L & 2.5L (http://www.allpar.com/mopar/22t.html) (and the FWD perf brigade in general), I'm kinda surprised that most perf enthusiasts still revile these brands of performance K-cars. Gen 1 Mitsu Eclipse cars seem to have a larger following when the build quality and the achievable performance levels is the effectively the same.
