But first I need someone to explain what a four million dollar car is doing in Lodi. Seriously.
I know right? My grandmother used to live there. I would never expect to see a McLaren stored there, or for anyone to know what it is. Who puts a McLaren on Craigslist anyway?

FTFY. :P

But what would I do with 4000 Dodge Rampages?

George
August 17th, 2017, 12:30 PM
Well, you could chop a couple of them up and put 'em back together as a crew-cab, long-bed Rampage.

A Grand Rampage in Mopar parlance, perhaps?

EDIT: Apologies if this read as too glib -- booked with meetings this morning. :D

Yeah I was just reacting to the Craigslist Daytonas and thinking that, honestly, if I was ever to be in the market that I'd want to buy-in to a very minty example. These are really fragile cars.

Considering the history, lineage and power of the ChryCo turbo 2.2L & 2.5L (http://www.allpar.com/mopar/22t.html) (and the FWD perf brigade in general), I'm kinda surprised that most perf enthusiasts still revile these brands of performance K-cars. Gen 1 Mitsu Eclipse cars seem to have a larger following when the build quality and the achievable performance levels is the effectively the same.
Then HotRod.com goes ahead and posts this today:

The Z — Mopar’s Red-Headed, Turbocharged Shelby Daytona Z at Drag Week (http://www.hotrod.com/articles/z-mopars-red-headed-turbocharged-shelby-daytona-z-drag-week/?sm_id=organic_fb_social_HRN_170831_sf110643894&sf110643894=1)

This stout drivetrain combination has netted J.T. a best ET of 10.50 at 141.66mph so far, with hopes of going faster in the future. The car has been outfitted with a 10-point roll cage to help keep it safe if the worst happens. A one-off carbon fiber hood was made for this car, but the rest remains stock steel panels.

Loads of custom pieces and go-fast parts fill the Daytona from bumper to bumper, making this a serious machine while allowing it to cruise the interstates and back roads without worry.
Noice.

Although I seriously thought about emailing the guy and see if he'd be willing to sell it without the motor. I dunno what a 330hp Lima is worth, but it's gotta be a couple grand. At $6k, I'd be really tempted.

Fortunately, I did not.

Seriously. Who could have ever conceived that full size vans would be cool again?

As I slowly think about replacing the Suburban (it's getting close to the four year timeout) I keep thinking about a full size van just for fun. The thing that holds me back is that it's really great that the dog can sit on the folded seats and stick her head out the window. It's not really possible with a van, and I can't think of a good way to make that happen. And, you know, safety is a factor. Big SUVs aren't all that safe, but full size vans are super unsafe.

George
September 13th, 2017, 12:09 PM

I don't need the 4x4ness, just that that's what that yellow Econoline was packin'.

It's a little noisy.

Really happy with ours! It's not exactly a precision instrument, but it's exactly the right size, super comfortable, quiet, and real quick. It's one of those cars that intellectually you know is very heavy but doesn't much feel it. I think some money put into dampers and tires would really pay off, but it's a great commuter stock.

I was down on the V6 turbo when it first came out - it betrayed Saab's heritage with a six cylinder at the exact moment all the great direct-injected four cylinders came out - but it's fun, no two ways about that.

I didn't even know you had a Sport Combi. I can't keep up with your cars. :)

Seems like a good value at the moment, putting aside you can't go down to your local Saab dealer for parts.

thesameguy
September 26th, 2017, 11:48 AM
I bought it for the girl back in December. :) She does love it!

You actually can go to your local dealer for parts and service.... Well, I guess it's not that local, but Walnut Creek isn't too far. Had them program new keys before I got my scan tool, and just had it there for the Takata airbag recall a couple months ago.

And Saab Parts USA (Orio) is still in business. Parts availability is pretty darned good... certainly as good as you'd expect for any ten year old car. I wouldn't swear to it, but I think parts are cheaper now than they were when Saab Cars USA was still in business. I ordered about $30 worth of stupid trim clips & rivets and the $90 front belly pan for the Viggen over the weekend. :)

balki

How much to program the new keys?

thesameguy
September 27th, 2017, 09:07 AM
Total bill was $240 as I recall. Two physical keys purchased & cut, two remote fobs, plus programming them. I think it was $80 per key/fob and 45 minutes labor. They washed the car before they gave it back, and I got a $100 reimbursement from AAA. Totally reasonable exchange.

balki
September 27th, 2017, 04:08 PM
very reasonable with the programming, unless the $100 reimbursement brought it down to $140 in which case I want to say it was flat-out cheap (but I won't since a few years ago I made non-immobilizer car keys for $2/pc)

I've paid less than $20 for 10 key copies over the years, at this point I'm just willing to accept that keys on cars built post-2000 have immobilizers which $300/key may be possible (while pre-2000 cars have severe rust problems)

Post-2000 cars also generally can't be stolen by peeling the column thanks to said immobilizer keys (note: does not apply to pre-2008 Dodge/Chrysler minivans).

thesameguy

GM had VATS back in the '90s, which helped keep f-body insurance rates reasonable. Things definitely spiraled out of control since then. I remember my roommates paid $180 for *a* key for his Focus in 2000, that sucked.

The thing with Saabs is the anti-theft system is unrecoverable with a key coded to it. You do not want to find yourself without one key - it's an enormous, expensive repair. When the Aero showed up with one key, I made arrangements to get a second immediately. $140 was chump change compared to the $1000+ repair that would have been needed if that singular key disappeared. I don't know if there are other cars like that, but it's something I'm really aware of with post '99 Saabs. '94 to '99 Saabs are no different, but on those cars programming out the immobilizer ain't no thing these days.

It's nowhere near as much as I expected at this point. Maybe there will be a last minute bidding war but I haven't seen a lot of that in the few BaT auctions I've paid attention to. I'm actually really tempted to bid if it doesn't go up a fair bit. My main concern is the rusty exhaust and mics bits underneath. Having to service any of those parts would probably mean drilling shit out and replacing the part anyway; or am I just being a paranoid Californian? :p I just did an oil change on my 172k mile Turbo and it's way cleaner than that car underneath.

Uhh, yeah, it went for over $17k. The time to get into 80s and 90s Japanese sports cars was a few years ago, methinks.

I’ll take an S2000, STi, or Evo VIII as a consolation prize if FDs get too crazy and FCs are just too hard to find in any condition.

Between 180-230hp (depending on if you are in California or not, and Cali only got an auto) and between 3300-3500 lbs.

The car was a laughable performance car. Hell, the car and driver review called the 305 powered California spec car, soothing.

Fucking kidding me? That should never be the describing verbiage for a sporting car of any sort. They should be exciting.

Not to mention the car was still essentially running on a very similar chassis as the 1963 Corvette, steering box design and all.

Fuck man, Carlo wants to 'upgrade'.

He's doing nothing but downgrading at this point with that car. Driveability, fuel mileage, power, performance, comfort, and most of all the ability to slay as many pedestrians as possible.

I like the c3, but after 73, the choices GM made make it damned hard for me to even look at them.

Think it'll sell for that?

It looks to be in similar shape to the one I had. Some things better, some things worse. Maybe I should have held onto it as an investment. But I never would have expected an '88 GTU to ever really be worth much. I think I paid $2700 or so for mine and it was in great shape overall. Guess those days are gone!

KillerB
December 27th, 2017, 12:23 PM
I think $12k would be attainable if the paint weren’t gnarly, as Carlo mentioned. I think a full detail could bring it back pretty well, and would be a good investment for the seller. As it stands, I’d be hard pressed to give $9-10k. The good condition of basically everything but the paint matters a lot because a lot of those parts degrade and can be hard to fix and/or replace. The undercarriage looks really good, too.

Dwindling supply and the ridiculous money coming into the 80s and 90s collector car market means these cars go for way more than they used to, but only when in very good condition. This, aside from the paint, seems to qualify.

Prices of cars still surprise me.

Somebody was asking locally more money for what I bought and sold my immaculate AW11 supercharged hardtop for, for an NA AW11 with chassis damage, and that needed to go through the recompliance process before it could be again road legal.

So apparently AW11 MR2's have more than doubled in price without my noticing.

The supply for cheap "sporty" cars is starting to dry up a bit, and now with the prevalence of kids taking anything remotely RWD and turning it into a clapped out drift missile, everything is getting pricier.

In the meantime, I'm still looking around for something cheapish that my fiance' can learn manual on... and the state of used miatas is bad, really bad.

Bummer. I bought my Cobra for $5k and sold it for $5.2k later that year. There is a nice GT that has been sitting all alone outside of a local business with an asking price of $4.2k. When I was hunting around for them I found good runners in the $2k range. All GTs.

Not saying it is the same where you are. But I also drove 3hrs each way to buy mine.

In addition to the money coming into the market for certain 80s and 90s cars (a fair chunk of which is, IMO, Silicon Valley money), I think Bring a Trailer kind of made its own market for these cars. Moving to mostly an auction site after they’d built up an audience was a stroke of genius, I think. Prices on things like air cooled Porsches and NSXs were already going up, but I think BaT poured a ton of gasoline on that fire. Once they started doing auctions, they had every incentive to push values ever higher.

Lada's are very little fun.

One of the cars I learned to drive in was the same as the yellow wagon (when I say the same it was a yellow Lada wagon). 4 speed 1200cc. Barely enough power to get out of it's own way. It was rusting terminally then, and that was in 1989 if I remember my years correctly.

The only thing that vehicle did well, was cope with gravel roads.

Horrid horrid little cars.

I'm going to be in the market for a car, now that I need a new job, and saw this Viggen on CL. It's almost identical to the one TSG picked up a little while back. But, maybe in better starting condition.
I wish TSG was around to give me some pointers on what to look at. It would be even better if he could come with, but he lives too far from here.

The Mustangs are gonna have the smallest back seats out of that list, just sayin'.

Hey, didn't we do this for me a while back?

Middle-aged dad, nearly overcome with ennui, wants affordable used convertible, but needs four seats....and, in my case, AWD or at least FWD for winter driving.

Here's a nice one for SoCal. Must be wicked fast with all those stripes and spoilers and such.

I noticed the Saab and BMW were 33" and the Mustang was 30"... But, the overall length of the Mustang is longer than both.

I'm not sure how the back seat measurements are done. There doesn't seem to be a set rule of where the front seat is when that's measured, which is not very helpful.

Yep, looking forward to reading about how your test-fit with the fam goes.

The Mustang's trunk is pretty damn big. Definitely big enough to take four persons' gear for a weekend FWIW.

Not sure if the seats fold down in the Vert E46. Trunk in the hard tops are pretty small, especially the way the speakers hang down into the cargo area.
