E46 325s are pretty gutless. We test drove one before buying the 330xi. On the way home Ash was like, "Really, that's it?" :lol:

To be fair the only BMW she had driven prior to that was the M6.

A good street/strip base for a Sloppy Mechanics-style LM4/turbo swap (but keep your original drivetrain & rims in storage). Or carb'd big block w/. a tunnel ram. Either way.

These 4th gen Camaro interiors are terrible -- dash plastics and vent plastics are just straight SnapTite model plastic. :down: I test drove a few before buying my '96 Trans Am back in the day and they made the Pontiac plastics feel plush. Wouldn't keep me out, I'm just sayin' know what you're getting into.

First year of the Tremec T-56 six-speed transmission too. Almost the entire value of the car can be recouped right there. :lol:

Hmm. I had no idea late model Camaros were this inexpensive. Here are just a few of several in this price range on the Denver CL today.

Too bad they suck in the snow and don't have four doors. Otherwise, I'd love to grow a mullet and slide Foghat's Greatest Hits into the 8-track player for some Saturday night cruisin'. I got to drive an '82 Z28 automatic a bit back in the summer of '87 and thought it was magnificent, but of course I owned a Beetle then, so anything felt like a rocket ship by comparison - even my parents' Dodge station wagon with a slant 6.

I've ridden in one of those cars before and they are flat out brutal. The acceleration is mind blowing and the sound is just magnificent. This one was a very pale blue and I remember the car would barely idle because it has such a lopey cam.

While looking at the Torino interior, I thought that the real Starsky & Hutch-mobile probably had bucket seats. They were too cool for a bench seat.

But, I never watched the show often enough to become an expert on such things. I don't think I ever saw it when it was new, or was too young to understand it, and I preferred CHiPs to S&H in reruns on weekday afternoons after school in the early '80s.

Yep, they're awesome used luxury/sport sedan value (partly for the reason they are pretty reliable). Normally I'd go for the manual but the auto seems like a good choice in this case - it has rear A/C vents and a center armrest, the Sport model has paddle shifters from the GT-R (though not the transmission from the GT-R!) with autoblip on downshift. Should be reasonable. My left ankle has been funky for the past year and some clutch pedal travel angles bother it sometimes. I bet the pedal is the same in the sedan as it is in the 350Z.

The 07-08 G35 sedan has Bluetooth for phone calls but not for streaming audio. I don't even know if that was a thing 10 years ago.

If you're talking about mechanicals, there are very few better places to start than on a \6 A-body mopar. Very few systems that can't be completely rebuilt with a couple hundred bucks, a basic tool kit, and the help of a haynes manual. Plus they'll take pretty much whatever abuse you might throw at them and keep running.
Bodywork/convertible top are a slightly different story, but still, about as simple as you can get.
$4500 seems a bit steep to me, but I've been out of the market forever and SoCal is very different from the midwest/plains so far as expected condition of bodywork, etc.

I'll just reiterate what Josh stated. Cars of this era are incredibly easy to work on. They are just big erector sets. If you know righty tighty lefty loosey then you can take this entire car part and put it back together again.

And the price looks right. If the cars is solid with no rust or just surface rust, it would be a great car to begin your wrenching journey.

I could go for a slant 6 Mopar if I had didn't have the same obstacles that keep me from owning a "fun" car in the first place - an extra garage bay, plenty of free time, no kids to put through college...oh, and disposable income, of course.

My parents owned at least two while I was a kid - a '73 Plymouth Satellite 4-door and a '79 Dodge Aspen wagon. I drove the Aspen some as a teen and thought it was pretty decent, although at that age I was probably just happy to be driving something with air conditioning and faster than the '74 SuperBeetle I owned at the time.

Speaking of '90s cars, I'm about to complete my eleventh year driving my Accord and have been looking on CL for a replacement. My first reaction is that everything built in the 21st century is too damn expensive and loaded with electronic crap and ridiculous luxuries that I do not want. I'll probably have to get over that. I'm looking at reliable utilitarian vehicles and trying to figure out how long of a vehicle I can comfortably fit in our garage.

If I truly didn't care what anyone thought (primarily my family), I'd probably just buy this and a set of snow tires. Plenty of room for bicycles, skiing gear, and Home Depot runs (although not all on the same trip). Probably not much electronic crap to break that hasn't already. Cloth seats, because ice-cold and searing-hot leather seats are the work of the devil. Some hail damage, so it looks like every other Colorado car and I could continue not caring if I get door-dinged. It's pretty much invisible in terms of being memorable or unique. And, I like the color.

I too drive an old luxury car; bought it for $4800, and it's cost me maybe that in repairs over the nearly ten years i've owned it. Keeping it to drive into the ground. My most expensive auto purchase too; bike was more expensive but I bought that new.

I think it is fair to say repair expenses on an older luxury car (especially European) will typically be higher than on a non luxury car. Given a choice of a luxury car and a non luxury car for the same price, both 5 years old, i'll take the luxury car all day. It wins the value to dollar ratio in my eyes. 10 years, depends on the specific models. 15 years, non luxury car.

And, I want to be clear; the things that make a car go, stop and turn are about as robust as you'll find in any other brand, especially the last ten or so years. Drivetrains are very stout and reliable. It's the sunroofs, parking sensors, navigation screens etc whose cost i'm talking about in repair expenses. Not engines, transmissions and brakes.

Honestly, i'd stay away from the models you've listed. I think American cars came UP significantly in quality in the mid aughties, but i'm leery of anything that debuted before about 2005. Starting with about that first Ford Fusion and Cadillac CTS, I think that's when they were now making cars easily as good as their import rivals. My ratings aren't based only on the drivetrain (those have always been decent- ish) it's on stuff like panel gaps, interior fit and finish, the quality of materials used in that interior and so on.

Cash for clunkers did get rid of a lot of the dross though.

I've been out of the car market for so long that I'm reeling from sticker shock and also "feature shock". I don't know the models or the years anymore. When did the first generation stop and the second one begin? Oh, the second gen cars have the column shift moved to the dashboard? And they started coming with tire pressure monitors or daytime running lights or some other absurdity after Year X? That stuff is good to know.

My father used to keep a log book for gas purchases, and he'd sit there after filling up and calculate his mileage, too. He didn't do it forever, though. Looking back, it was probably for work-related travel expenses when he used to travel a lot for work.

I wonder if people used to record fuel purchases back when odometers were relatively easily rolled back: "My fuel logbook confirms the mileage on this car!"

The Delorean has an analog odometer. It was non-functional when I bought it, the angle drive at the axle hub gets water in it and breaks when it freezes. I took it out and rolled it by hand, adding about 10k miles, because that's what I estimated the true mileage to be based on documentation and my own driving habits. It bothered me that it was under reporting. Most DMCs you see for sale are 'low mileage' because the angle drive broke in the 80s and the owners didn't bother to fix it.

When I was in high school I lusted after that '72 Charger. I'm not sure I'll ever circle back for one, especially at that price.

I always preferred the more squared-off Chargers made from 1968 - 70, but seeing that orange one on TV every week as a kid might have had something to do with that.

Somehow the next generation like that yellow one looks less desirable to my eye. It looks less like a muscle car and more like the rich, Corinthian leather coupes that would follow a couple years later for the gold chain & mustache crowd.

The 3000GT VR-4 and Stealth R/T prices are insane. Autotrader would have you believe that $20k is the norm. But if you check craigslist and other outlets there are deals to be had everywhere.

When I cage the E46 I need a winter car/DD. 3000GT is high on my list. I've wanted one since they were new. I looked seriously into them when I bought the MINI but ultimately decided to pass. An AWD 3000GT w/dedicated winter tires would be a hoot. It's strange, given my Dodge pedigree, that I never took to the Stealth. It always felt watered down to me and I never took it seriously.

The only Bricklin I have seen in person was driven from St. Louis to Pittsburgh for a nationalmcar show. It was in good shape.

1. That Stude is in great shape, minus the fire damage. At least the interior seems to be free of water damage. Finding parts to fix it won't be a problem.

2. The Travel-all is nice. I'd put it back to stock height and swap in a 7.3.

3. The Dodge looks like somebody took one of those chopped VW vans and decided to weld a tail on it. It is crying for a Cummins swap. Add a tire rack and that is one hell of a race car hauler.

Were they still selling three-on-the-tree vehicles in 1980, or would this be a floor shift? Had a friend in high school with a 1975 C-10 with a 3/tree so I guess they may have still be doing that with these same generation vehicles just five years later. Someday I hope I get a chance to drive something with a column-shifted manual just to say I have.

More than likely it's a column shift. The Chevy PU carried a three on the tree until '87, the vans probably lost theirs around the same time.

One of the most memorable manual shift vans I've ever seen were the 1-ton Econolines that UPS ran until the late 80s.

'87, huh? Wow. They must not have made many in the later years, based only on how many of the '73 - '87 trucks that I've seen with them - which obviously isn't a scientific method of counting them. Maybe just old guys who didn't care for the new technology bought the few they made.

Only C/Ks made with the 3 spd during the end of that run were 6 cyl, so pretty much just a stripper that somebody's frugal grandpa would've bought. Base transmission in the '88s was a 5 spd.

Interesting. I didn't search for information on this, until now.

I found a few Travelall dashboard pictures without anything under the throttle label. That got me to thinking that International made lots of larger trucks and probably used shared parts as often as possible. A light-duty vehicle like a Scout or Travelall might not have had as many controls as the larger trucks, but they might have had the same dashboard labels.

Then I found these pictures, which suggest the choke was on the left of the steering column. If so, throttle wouldn't be the same as a choke.

Interesting. I didn't search for information on this, until now.

I found a few Travelall dashboard pictures without anything under the throttle label. That got me to thinking that International made lots of larger trucks and probably used shared parts as often as possible. A light-duty vehicle like a Scout or Travelall might not have had as many controls as the larger trucks, but they might have had the same dashboard labels.

Then I found these pictures, which suggest the choke was on the left of the steering column. If so, throttle wouldn't be the same as a choke.

So my guess is the Throttle label marks where an optional PTO control cable could be mounted.

Totally disagree, it is not a PTO. But you got me thinking and I did another google search and came up with this from a bus forum.


the throttle knob i've seen in most buses pulls straight out...it's easier to pull if you step on the accelerator at the same time. Once the knob is pulled out from the dash (yours may turn, i've never looked at a gmc) it makes the engine run faster without stepping on the accelerator. The purpose is to let the engine run at "high idle" mostly for winter time. Diesel engines don't heat up well at idle. If you're a bus driver I think it's common to run a bus in high idle mode when you first start it in the morning so you can make heat to defrost windows and the bus driver. High idle mode is also useful to increase the current generated by your alternator to run large 12 volt dc loads.

the purpose of the knob is not to control the speed of the vehicle while driving. This can be very dangerous. IF you had the knob pulled out all the way and had to stop in a hurry....you could slam on the brakes and the engine would still be running at wide open throttle significantly increasing your stopping distance.

Once you understand what the knob is and is not supposed to be used for then you can make up your mind about how you want to use it. I know it's not safe, but i have used my knob for cruise control along with various other methods because my foot gets too tired to step on the pedal after a few hours. But i shouldn't use the knob for cuise control, it's not safe.

Makes sense that you'd use it to set the idle during the winter. Our trucks at work have an auto shutdown if the truck is idling for more than five minutes, so to keep it idling during the winter we set the cruise to 1k rpm and don't have to worry about it shutting down.

Can't remember the last time I saw one of those old Bell System vans. Probably the 70s. The fact that it survived this long is amazing.
