I've had one of those 4wd Justy's in the "RS" 1200cc big block spec.

Highly do not recommend trying to grass autocross one of these. They just go straight ahead, regardless of what you do with the steering wheel, gears, brake pedal, and the handbrake is on the front axle. Absolutely NO fun at all. I might have possibly driven mine into a fence (slowly) courtesy of this handling trait.

Yes to the Pinto because I spent between the ages of 5-13 in either a red '75 Hatchback or a brown '75 wagon.

That Chevy 1-ton looks like the offspring of an '82 Dodge Mirada and a '91 Chevy 3500.

Yes to the Rebel. It's a really good looking Belvedere.

‘98 Integra for $15k?! Wtf are these people thinking?

Phil_SS
June 22nd, 2022, 07:32 AM
A 98 Integra for 15k, I can see, but not one with 250K miles. No matter how clean it is the chassis still has that mileage.

Now one with say 50K miles? Yeah, I think that is worth 15k all day long.

JoeW
June 22nd, 2022, 09:18 AM
Oof. Maybe half that. It’s not a GSR. It’s a base model. Interior is garbage and it’s gutted in the back for speakers. In that condition maybe $3-4k.

Not a stick.

And my statement was for that model with a stick and 50k miles, aka the interior would be in really nice shape. Aka, think the little old person car. They drive it like 3k miles a year from home to church and it gets treated very well.

That would be 15k all day long. Even a base model.

You can disagree all you like. :) But when Type Rs are going for 90-100k (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2001-acura-integra-type-r-46/) , then a very nice base model with a stick is going to be worth 15k.

For example: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2000-acura-integra-10/

If it had 30k less miles I could easily see it hitting 15k.

So like, if any of y'all want to know what high end medical narcotics feels like. Go drive a well sorted Gran marquis with the air suspension.
Devoid of sensation.

From brakes, to steering, and bumps in the road.

My parents owned two Grand Marquis from that generation. They were burgundy and brown and I think they both had cloth seats and wire-wheel-style hubcaps and whitewalls, of course. My mother-in-law had a light green metallic one around the same time with alloy wheels and light green leather seats. I got to ride in and drive them all and had no complaints. They were comfortable and roomy. I assume they were powerful, although with my parents, mother-in-law, and/or wife as passengers, I didn't see if they'd spin the tires off the line or if they had top speed governors.

Meet Contestant Number One, from a used car lot in scenic Englewood, CO:

Long vans like this have been around forever, often with rolls of carpet hanging out the rear and the back doors tied shut with dental floss and old tube socks. Maybe it's just a discolored seam between the rear section and the rest of the van, but even in the thumbnail photo, this caught my eye as looking like weekend project that involved two vans and a case of beer.

Huh, I wonder if that '51 Plymouth is the one my dad owned in college. He bought it with a seized motor from my uncle's brother, bought a new one from a local salvage yard for $40, drove it for a few years and then sold it to a friend that was moving to Colo Springs in like 1974 because he needed the cargo capacity.

"Bring your own grill" is a deal breaker.

George
September 8th, 2022, 06:56 PM
Yeah, and they don't say if the beer is free or if you have to bring your own. Maybe I'll wait for a better offer.

Down in North Carolina, they put grills on wheels and pull them behind pickup trucks, with or without brake lights and license plates.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_pickin%27

That link is not vegetarian/vegan-friendly, and the pictures are kind of lame. Usually the grills are surrounded by beer drinkers who want to see and/or help and/or eat. That last one I went to in the early 2000s in the cul-de-sac that our next-door neighbors lived in started cooking on Friday after work, started serving on Saturday afternoon, and people were back for more all day Sunday.

If the TV show King Of The Hill was set in NC instead of TX, I guarantee they'd have done a pig-pickin' episode. And maybe they did.

Just wandering around Google for another minute, I found this article that's probably better than the Wikipedia article.

He's not quite fourteen and a half. He's counting the days until he can drive and says he can't wait to start working next summer and save all his money for a car. We'll see how that goes. He's as lazy as they come around the house but he and I worked the concession stand at a high school football game two weeks ago and the kid was a non-stop working machine, restocking the drink cooler without being asked and such. I'm hoping once he has someone other than his parents telling him what to do he'll rise to the challenge of a job and make good money.

Just yesterday he texted me an ad for a $3500 Miata. I wrote back "Automatic transmission?" He replied "Manual swap!"

Oh, of course.

Here's the ad:

1993 mazda miata - $3,500 (https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/longmont-1993-mazda-miata/7533536447.html)

https://images.craigslist.org/00g0g_4zJDxvlkQZ4z_0lM0t2_600x450.jpg

He's hoping we'll cave and buy him something now so he can start tinkering with it. And he's a great salesman, too: "Dad, you could drive it until I turn sixteen. It will get much better mileage than you get now and you'll enjoy driving a manual again!"

I made the mistake of telling him about a kid a couple years older than I was who was buying, working on, and selling Corvettes at the age of 14 and 15 back in the early '80s. He was the son of a guy my father worked with. My Dad would come home and say, "So-and-so is flipping* Corvettes. What are you doing to earn money besides mowing lawns? You could start a business, you know."

My son is as resistant to that idea as I was then, but the lesson he got from that story is that 14-year-olds can own cars. The story about the '62 Impala a neighbor was asking $400 for when I was 14 and how my father said no to that hasn't stopped him from bringing up car ownership on an almost daily basis.

It is fun to relive the same experiences with my son that I had with my father.

*I don't think we called it flipping back then

Oh, and two weekends ago we went to a classic car show in a church parking lot. I used to post pictures of car shows here, but didn't bother to take a single picture this time around. Anyway, he's also into old and cheap water-cooled Porsches. I've explained those won't be as reliable as his parents' Hondas, and he says, "Yeah, that means we can work on it! Your cars are so boring. They never need anything done to them!"

Anyway, we're standing there checking out a very nice brown/bronze 924 with the hood up when I hear a voice behind me say, "Hey Dad! That's a great car for a young man!" I turned to see a guy probably a few years older than me getting up from his folding chair behind the car. He started talking about how his son bought this car for $5000 a couple years ago when he was 17 and how it's been a fun father-son project and all that.

I don't know if the guy was just talking like guys do at car shows or dropping hints that the car was for sale now that his son is off in college (just guessing), but my son soaked it all in and it added to his determination to get a sports car, and maybe even a European one.

Ah, gotcha. My daughter is 14 3/4, thus they are close in age. But she isn't interested that much in cars. She knows a nice car when she sees it but unlike me at the same age it is just a nice thing.

IMO, if you really are thinking of getting a car you can tinker with together. I would highly recommend getting something you could autocross as well. An automatic Miata would be fine. :D The reason is that he should be able to compete once he gets a license. And it would help him bleed off some of the "I need to go fast-itis" and teach him some car control.

Ah, gotcha. My daughter is 14 3/4, thus they are close in age. But she isn't interested that much in cars. She knows a nice car when she sees it but unlike me at the same age it is just a nice thing.

My daughter is the same way. A car is a car and a bicycle is a bicycle.

Meanwhile my son is looking at 1x12 mountain bike drivetrains that cost $400 and quoting me specs about how many teeth he needs for his front chainring based on tire diameter.

I wouldn't be opposed to that in principle, but I get caught up in the details, the cost, etc. I look forward to the experience, even if I wonder where we'll park the car in the winter and how much insurance will cost and just how much of this is he going to pay for with his own earnings and all that.

About six months ago he had an idea to rent a storage unit to keep the car in and pay for the rental on that unit by flipping cars, so it becomes a self-sustaining business. I told him to find out how large of a unit he needs, how much it costs, and to write a business plan. I think he lost interest in that once he went to one of the mini-storage websites and saw what even the smallest unit that could hold a car would cost per month.

We need to jump in the car some weekend and drive the hour or so it takes to get to the High Plains Raceway (https://www.highplainsraceway.com/) and watch some racing.

Edited to add: apparently the Rocky Mountain Region Porsche Club is there this weekend. https://rmr.pca.org/clubrace/

Edited again to add: My wife says we (he and I, not her) need to go this weekend. As of right now, I'm planning on it.

I really like that MX-3. Seems like the perfect car for a first car. Sporty but not a sports car. Should be fairly reliable as well.

The 300ZX is sweet! Obviously abit more car. Even without the Turbo it is producing 222HP. On the plus side he would only be able to take one friend with him.

Cars for teenage boys.

Perhaps the first few are even somewhat realistic. I paid $1600 for my first car 38 years ago. Google says that's $4562 today.

I paid $200 for my first car on Labor Day '86. I bought it from my uncle, that should've been a red flag to never buy a car from a relative. Had a hard time driving it because it was a stick and my dad could only drive a three on a tree. I ended up selling it to a guy I went to school with for $250. After I sold the car to him he never spoke to me again outside of saying "I took advantage of him" because the car was a POS.

George, do you watch Vice Grip Garage on Youtube? I feel like it would be up your alley. Only issue is the episodes are really long but I just put them on in the background at work and half pay attention.

Thanks. I'll check it out.

I do the same thing - I'll make the window small and put it in the corner of my two-monitor setups and listen like a podcast. Larry Lawton is one I watch/listen to now and then. George Motz is another, as I've recently started trying to make smashburgers in a cast-iron pan instead of cooking patties on the grill sometimes on the weekends. I don't officially follow anyone but there are a few folks like that who show up in the recommended videos when I go to the main YT page. There are a few cooking shows I like and some guitar and bicycle videos too, such as RJ The Bike Guy. There's a woodworking guy, too, but I can't remember his name at the moment...

That reminds me, I should finish this one. Started it yesterday but got involved in other stuff. There's always someone wanting me to stop goofing off and work during weekdays. :(

Junkyard Digs is another similar channel, which has more information and technical tips, but is still entertainment.

Thanks Leon. I'll check that out too the next time I need some new material.

My son and I stared watching Rust Valley Restorers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rust_Valley_Restorers) on Netflix a while back but sort of lost interest, I guess. He'd usually rather be playing video games than watching TV. The show seemed okay to me and not as bad as some of the car shows that are full of drama and fast-approaching deadlines and unexpected problems. That's too much like real life to watch as entertainment.

And speaking of video games, he has a VR headset now and one of the games he plays is an auto mechanics simulator in which he has to replace parts on cars not by just clicking a mouse, but by virtually lifting things into place and holding them there while turning wrenches or screwdrivers and so forth.

The other day he asked me if he could replace my brake pads, since he already knows how.

The Vice Grip guy now has a series on Motor Trend+ called Roadworthy Rescues. Seems like the same premise as this show. Buys a car sitting in a field and try's to get it home. He has very funny terms for items in the car.

Of course, to me, the originators of that are Finnigen and Freiburger of Roadkill garage. I've always liked their show which is also on Motor Trend+. I grew up with those car improvement shows on sunday mornings. Plus MotorWeek on PBS. And thus Motor Trend+ hits my gearhead nostalgia bone.

I bought a MotorTrend sub and tried to get into Roadkill. Not sure what the disconnect was but their stuff always seemed to have just a bit too much of the fake deadline vibe to it. VGG is on the other end of the spectrum, sometimes I have to skip ahead a bit because he's not actually wrenching for a while.

I find myself saying 'sprakalater' a bit too much now, though, hah. Having lived in Wisconsin for a bit I appreciate the dry wit he brings.

...always seemed to have just a bit too much of the fake deadline vibe to it.

Was Pimp My Ride the first of those "fake deadline" shows? I remember watching that now and then and it seemed like they always had to work all night to slap-dash things together to "surprise" the owner, who is being driven to the shop in the morning expecting to pick up his or her vehicle. Owner, pretend you don't see the camera crew as you roll up and walk inside.

It used to make me wonder how everything being rushed (if it really was) could result in a decent job. Take your time and do it right.

"Charlie, we'll need that interior completely finished in four hours!"

"But the upholstery material isn't here yet, and the car is still in the paint booth!"

Regarding the Miata photos, that is the right way to do it. You move the car, not yourself around the car. That way all angles have the same light and perspective.

That 1991 Regal is sweet!

The Pimp My Ride cars are notorious for being complete pieces of shit. Plus, most of them, they completely destroyed the usability of the vehicles. The people that got them almost immediately sold them and the show had to add in a clause that you couldn't sell the vehicle for like 3 years or summat. Most of them ended up in junk yards within a few years.

And I never got the "faked deadline show" from Roadkill. They get the vehicle running and then document the trip. It's definitely not like a Rust Valley Restorers style show where miraculously in 4 weeks they complete a resto of a car when half the parts can't be found and yelling and mayhem ensues most of the show.

Too expensive, too!

He liked the '88 RX-7 GTU above also, but I'm watching the snow fall this morning and remembering there's a reason Colorado isn't overrun with RWD sports cars.

But I've always liked window-shopping for cars and he's at that age where it's all he can think about. Just having fun. :)

My other issue is, "How long has that car sat not being used". If the mileage is correct it has traveled about 1200 miles a year. You know there was a year or two and it got driven 5-6k a year and then sat for five years.

I'd rather have a well driven one that had been taken care of.

And the RX-7 looks like a great deal if it's as nice as it looks. The '88 GTU was a little bit special, having the suspension/brakes/seats from the Turbo II. And sometimes even an aluminum hood.

Agreed. If I lived where i could enjoy a car like that year round, I would think about buying it.

Though I have always been weary about driving a RHD car in a LHD drive country. Or vise versa. Blind spots being on the opposite sides of everyone else could get tricky.

Fair enough. I don't think anyone makes whitewall snow tires. Maybe I should look into that as a business venture. Surely the Corvette guys would want them.

Cruel. :(

I heard a guy say that once and filed it away for future use.

I got no beef with the leaning tower of power. I'd own one as willingly as anything else if I ever had the money, space, and time for a classic car.

My parents owned at least two. One was a green '73 Plymouth Satellite 4-door with green vinyl bench seats, a black rubber/plastic floor, and an aftermarket air conditioner between the dashboard and the transmission hump. Then there was a later Satellite sedan in white with a maroon vinyl top, but I only vaguely remember that car. I don't think they owned it for long.

The one I knew best and drove often was their white '79 Dodge Aspen with a blue vinyl interior. They let me take it on a wildly unsupervised trip to the beach the summer I was 17 with my buddy Dave which resulted in both a speeding ticket and a flat tire on the way home. I worked at a car dealership as a lot boy at the time and the older guys in the detail shop, which was the place where I helped when I didn't have other immediate duties, bought us a couple cases of beer for the trip, which we stashed under the folded down rear seat and behind those plastic panels near the tailgate on each side that also housed the spare tire and jack. Other than it being a station wagon, I had no complaints with the car. It wasn't a muscle car killer when the light turned green, but it drove just fine. Style was another matter, as we had no success in picking up chicks at the local cruising spots near the pier, arcade, mini-golf course, go-cart track, and waterslide in a station wagon with whitewall tires. But there were miles of dirt and sand roads in the area and we enjoyed spinning the tires on them, as it damn sure wouldn't burn rubber on pavement.

Now I think vintage station wagons are awesome, but as a teenager in the mid-'80s, driving a station wagon or a four-door sedan was definitely not cool.

George
January 6th, 2023, 01:09 PM
Pretty easy to unplug speedometer cables, too.

A rambling, old-man-style story about a speedometer cable follows.

I bought a 1991 Mitsubishi pickup brand new when I was young and working hard in a warehouse but not making much money. Interest rates were so high that I could afford a nicer new car than a used one due to how much of a down payment was required and the higher interest rates for used cars. And it seemed to me a cheap, small truck was better than a cheap, small car.

My father thought I was crazy to buy brand new even after I tried to show him what $X per month bought used vs. new for a young guy without much credit history. I think my interest rate was nine point something and my payments were $161.xx per month, which was a large and scary number to me.

"I'm paying for reliability" was how I remember thinking, as I had recently been written up at work for an unexcused absence after the wiring in my Beetle's steering column caught fire one morning when I tried to start it. There's a story there, too, involving a bicycle ride to the import auto parts store, a long day in my apartment's parking lot, and me tossing the burnt wires and receipt for new parts on my boss's desk the next day, but I'm going on too long already.

That pickup surely was a "stripper". It had A/C (my first car with that), and I think power brakes were standard equipment but that's all. Steel wheels. Vinyl bench seat. 5-speed manual. Manual windows and locks, of course. Plain rear window (instead of one that slid open). Black grille and front bumper (instead of chrome). No rear bumper. No clock. No radio! It did have a passenger-side rearview mirror, though, which was my first and seemed like a real advancement in automotive safety.

Anyway, it had a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty, IIRC. During those first three years, if I didn't have any highway travel scheduled, I'd reach up under the dash and unscrew the cable, which of course kept the odometer from working. I'd drive it around town that way to stretch the time before it hit the 36K mark. I don't think it ever needed any warranty work - it was a very reliable vehicle for seven years and 157,000 (indicated ;)) miles eventually - but I was so frugal out of habit and necessity that doing anything to avoid having to spend money I didn't have seemed reasonable and proper.

dodint
January 6th, 2023, 05:01 PM
That's awesome. And, fraud.

Delorean odometers are notoriously bad. It's a square cable ran by a gear in the front hub. Very, very often snow, ice, water, and grime get into the gear and it strips out. Beware of a low mileage DMC. Mine broke on the drive home, it was 17F out though.

Yeah. I sure wish we had a three-car garage or a driveway long or wide enough for three cars. We're just not really set up well here for a project car. We have a driveway as steep, if not steeper than Walter White's and not much longer. It's only wide enough for two cars (his might hold three). I don't like to park cars outdoors or on the street. If it were up to me, our kids could share something like an old Accord or non-turbo Impreza or my wife's aging Pilot.

Our friends down the street have two teenagers who drive some small, boring-looking, older Ford sedan like an Escort or a Focus, perhaps. And it's beige! It's perfect for parking in a foot of snow on the street in front of their house. My buddy (and hero!) down the street who ditched his Honda Odyssey for a pretty recent Corvette with loud pipes has a 20-year-old Camry parked out front for his kids.

I just can't see letting a Miata or something even older and more fragile sit out there and fade in the sun. That's my biggest concern at this time about adding a car (or two!) to the family fleet. I haven't even started thinking about costs such as insurance and of course the car itself and how much he can earn this year. He seems to think he can work his first summer job and put $15K in the bank and then park and work on some collector car in the garage while MY car moves to the street to make room.

A lot could happen between now and then. We'll see how it goes.

There's a couple of these in my neighborhood now. I kind of like the idea of them for a camper conversion, it'd be like having a Class C sized Class A RV. Although for the price the coasters go for you'd be better off just getting a Promaster/Sprinter/Transit I think.

I've never seen a gas one imported to the US, but according to Wikipedia they sold this thing with the 22R engine. I can't imagine a 100hp gas four cylinder in there, I hope in Japan they would have only been used on city routes!

Yeah, if it is the original engine then yeah, it would be a 283. I was thinkin they may have dropped a new engine in but they don't say that, they state they rebuilt the engine. So, you are more than likely correct, it is a 283. Which just tells you it is a poverty spec car.

That's awesome. I was looking at those same exact 325ix's when I was his age. Never got one.

Or does he have a friend who is, and will work for beer pizza?

I guess that would be me.

I just wrote way too much, as I tend to do when I'm avoiding working. I'll put it under a spoiler tag so guys who might drop a TL;DR on me can scroll on by with ease. :)

...is your son a good mechanic?

He wants to be a good mechanic. He has talked about wanting to go to some Porsche tech school with locations in California and Georgia and somewhere else, I think, to become a professional mechanic. He's not too excited about "regular" college, but I wasn't either until I was about sixteen and it was time to apply. So much could happen between now and then that it's hard to know where life will take any of us.

My problem, and it's kind of a funny one, is he will not stop talking about cars. I do it with him. I've always liked cars, even if I've never had the money to drive enthusiast vehicles. He always seems to be working an angle on me. Today he's saying he can pay for insurance and gas with his new job and he threw in, "Dad, I can pay for the gas for you to drive to work too!"

It is tempting to think about leaving my gas hog home some days and driving a stick shift again, I admit. But, unlike him, I am very patient when it comes to buying big-ticket items. I can sleep on decisions for years. He thinks in terms of days, if not hours.

Yesterday, after work, we went down to the local outlet mall to get him some jeans and non-slip work shoes for the job he starts this weekend. He talked to me about that BMW and the 944 for the entire trip, down and back, and while trying on shoes and everything, as if which one to buy is the question at hand.

We went to Cabela's on the way home for a good leather belt for his new jeans. He started in on the 4x4 off-road "dune buggies" (for lack of the correct term) they had just inside the doors. "See, Dad, even these cost $10,000. Cars cost more now too. This isn't the 20th century anymore," and so forth.

We got home and I tried to hide out in the garage to collect my thoughts for a few minutes, but he found me and wouldn't stop "selling" me. Then, down to the basement where I had to prep some work for today on my laptop. Same thing. I guess I didn't help by finally relenting and turning on YouTube to watch car reviews before we went up to bed.

And again, this morning, before school, he was all over me and his mother. Cars, cars, cars! And now, he's out of school and walking to the gym with his buddies to lift weights. He's texting me as if he thinks we're going to buy him a car this weekend. He doesn't realize there are two things wrong with that sentence.

The couple across the street did a great job with their two boys. One is off in college now, but the younger one is still driving the small beige Ford sedan the older boy started with. It's a Focus, I think. It is completely invisible parked on the street. I think that's a good car for a high school kid! Or maybe a nice PT Cruiser. ;)

But I remember when I was fourteen and how I begged my parents to let me buy the '62 Impala with a V-8 (327, maybe?) and a four (or maybe three) on the floor that an old guy in the neighborhood was asking $400 for. Four hundred dollars! That car was about twenty years old then and was just an old Chevy, as compared to the cherished classics that '60s Impalas have become these days. I had perhaps half of that saved from mowing lawns and wanted to borrow the rest from them.

No. Case closed. End of story.

I guess I should be as tough as my Dad was about these things, but this young man is a good kid and on the honor roll at school. His mother seems content with whatever I decide on the matter. He works on her about cars like Andy Dufresne after lights out whenever I'm not around to listen.

Part of me wants to buy a third car "for the family" and drive it myself until he's sixteen, and of course let him drive it with his learners permit with me or Mom in the car. Last night, after he had gone to bed, I found myself telling my wife that we should sell her Honda that has 215K miles. She could take my car with 90K fewer miles on it and I'd drive the small car with the manual transmission for the next year. He's even got me thinking like him, until I regain my senses.

And yet, we're only young once. Why not have a cool car in high school, as long as his grades stay high. Just because I had parents who were kids during the Great Depression and who were always so careful with money doesn't mean he has to drive a beige Ford that looks like someone's grandmother's car, does it?

We'll see how it goes. I'm hoping this will pass, at least for a while, but I think I'm in for a year of non-stop begging salesmanship.

The short video below contains a spoiler from Breaking Bad.

We watched BB for about two seasons and then stopped because of a lack of interest. People kept saying "it'll get real good next episode/season" but it never did. I think it's because there are no likable characters.

I discovered just a few likeable characters. Here's one.

It does sound like your son could have a good career in sales if mechanic'ing doesn't work out! I was the same way at that age if I wanted something. (Looking back suddenly, where did my drive go?)

I've no idea who that is sorry :)

Perhaps I can modify my saying "the average person won't have money for motorsport and drugs at the same time".

Weirdly here in NZ, quite a few years ago, turns out that one of our higher up (relatively speaking) motor racing people was in fact robbing armoured cars to fund his racing. Ooops.

Around '92 - '93 I worked with an older guy who drove a red P1800 to work on Fridays when the weather was nice.

It was the first one I had ever seen, probably - certainly the first one I'd seen in person, rather than in Road & Track magazine or wherever.

I thought it was a Ferrari.

My son's Craiglist Pick Of The Day yesterday. He's looking at cars I was dreaming about forty years ago.

1983 Mazda RX-7 GS - Original Owner - 160K miles - $8,000 (https://boulder.craigslist.org/cto/d/boulder-1983-mazda-rx-original-owner/7617085399.html)

"I'm the original owner, bought it in 1983. Always garaged. Great condition, not perfect but close. Runs fantastic. 4sp manual transmission. Includes original sales brochures and window sticker."

https://images.craigslist.org/00f0f_dSrVGxVm93V_05a03S_600x450.jpg

Here are some I'm finding that seem wildly fantastic for a kid's first car, yet we've always told him good things would come with good grades, and he's got 'em...unlike his old man did.

All have manual transmissions, of course.

I'm wondering if these are relatively inexpensive (compared to sensible cars like late-model Hondas and Toyotas and Subarus) because RWD cars and convertibles are impractical in Colorado winters, or if because old European cars are expensive and time-consuming to keep running, no matter where one lives.

I am assuming the latter.

1997 Porsche Boxster 986 Convertible - 124K miles - $8,700 (https://fortcollins.craigslist.org/cto/d/fort-collins-porsche-boxster-986/7618938095.html)

https://images.craigslist.org/00u0u_2yi2odbcUEU_0CI0pO_600x450.jpg

1998 BMW 328IC 5 speed - 110K miles - $7,875 (https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/littleton-1998-bmw-328ic-speed/7617126787.html)

https://images.craigslist.org/00t0t_2zmw9zZv5RV_0CI0pE_600x450.jpg

https://images.craigslist.org/00H0H_izMS9jOZ3Rc_0CI0pE_600x450.jpg

1999 BMW 323i 5 speed manual Convertible - 67K - $10,500 (https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/denver-99-bmw-323-5-speed-manual/7616941737.html)

https://images.craigslist.org/00R0R_2QvKZvV5w3_0CI0t2_600x450.jpg

1998 BMW Z3 roadster for sale - 77K miles - $8,500 (https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/aurora-1998-bmw-z3-roadster-for-sale/7615774018.html)

https://images.craigslist.org/00g0g_9g2xqsfUHhC_0CI0t2_600x450.jpg

I must admit I'm personally smitten with this one. I know nothing about Boxters (or other liquid-cooled Porsches), but this reminds me of the VW Karmann Ghia I always wanted. I don't like black cars, either, but...wow! I guess a good detailing as dealers do makes all the difference.

1998 Porsche Boxster with hardtop - 88K miles - $12,260 (https://fortcollins.craigslist.org/ctd/d/masonville-1998-porsche-boxster-with/7609745320.html)

https://images.craigslist.org/00j0j_heiwmbsYqLCz_0CI0t2_600x450.jpg

And the only thing worse than a black car is a car with a black interior. And leather is even less desirable to me than vinyl. Yet, why can't I look away?

I love the left-handed ignition switch.

https://images.craigslist.org/00M0M_llNonX9vK2Mz_0CI0t2_600x450.jpg

Just one luddite-style complaint, though...

"...Power Seat Package..."

WHY?! What here needs power to adjust? The damn thing is tiny - how much do those seats even move?

I've long said if you can't reach down between your legs and ease the seat back, you're not physically qualified to operate a motor vehicle.

https://images.craigslist.org/00D0D_eYtE7sFNNemz_0CI0t2_600x450.jpg

But, I think we can all agree on this one! :rawk:

1989 Renault 4 - $8,800 (https://cosprings.craigslist.org/cto/d/colorado-springs-1989-renault/7618071873.html)

Our experience with the NC Miata has been great. Car is pretty damn nice. Same price range.

Yeah.

I know.

My wife put her foot down hard against a Miata because they're small and dangerous. And I agreed. Plus, who wants RWD and a convertible in a place with long and snowy winters?

Yet, I can't find anything even comparable to a Miata. Everything else is old(er), weird, expensive, and scary.

The "living in a dream world" side of my brain is telling me to rent a U-Haul car trailer and tow this one home from the other side of the mountains and then stash it in a storage unit.

1995 Mazda Miata MX-5 - 65K miles - $11,800 (Grand Junction) (https://westslope.craigslist.org/cto/d/grand-junction-1995-mazda-miata-mx/7617071645.html)

"Completely stock, well maintained car and 1.8L engine. 100% reliable and fun. All rubber bushings are new throughout car (with receipts). Many, many other new OEM parts, including new timing chain.
One of the best stock examples of the NA I've seen."

https://images.craigslist.org/00404_f8q9nDQKMjs_0CI0t2_600x450.jpg

Did they come stock with roll bars? I don't remember that.

JoeW

Stock with an aftermarket roll bar :)

I leaned to the NC because it will never need a timing belt etc and has more power etc. But yeah not the best option for snowy conditions. But no convertible is really.

Now you’ve got me singing that Taco song…how dare you…”living in my dreamworld”…

Throw snow tires on it for the winters and let him learn car control.

JoeW
May 10th, 2023, 02:30 PM
The person selling it probably is not the owner. This car doesn't have a timing chain either. It has belts. Any enthusiast owner would know the difference. The hardtop option adds like $2k to it for sure though.

JoeW

Pricey. Check for rust...Colorado car. Not sure about wheels. You could get a mint NC for that...15yrs newer...more power etc. Might even be able to get an early PRHT (power retractable hard top) model for that kind of money, which would be the bees knees.

Buying a hardtop by itself is $2k all day every day. It does add value but make sure the soft top is in good shape too.

George
May 17th, 2023, 05:24 AM
Much appreciated, Joe. I have some homework to do. I haven't paid attention to Miatas over the decades.

Didn't know PRHTs existed with these cars. Seems like a great idea, and no hard top taking up space in the garage or basement in "convertible weather".

Surprisingly to me, an east coast guy, cars don't rust much out here. "It's a dry cold", to paraphrase the other saying about the southwestern desert. Sure, we get surface rust, but not so much of the rotting-away of frames and fenders and such.

I still think he ought to start with something more like this.

2007 HONDA CIVIC COUPE - $7,295 (https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/fort-collins-2007-honda-civic-coupe/7620932870.html)

JoeW

Yeah if could afford one I’d get the PRHT. You need two people for those removable hard tops. Same thing with all those Jeep owners with hard tops. You need a garage lift to get it off and store it.

For some reason the value on Miatas are inflated lately. It’s not like they are limited or collectible. I knew very little about them until we narrowed down what he wanted…then I went into research mode :)

Here's a sentence that I never thought would come out of my keyboard: I honestly might take the Gremlin over the Javelin

Yup. Javelin has too much crap stuck to it. I love the green color and the subtle vinyl top on the Gremlin. And the white-letter tires! Whatever happened to those?

They are seeing a resurgence (https://www.americastire.com/blog/white-letter-tires?storeCode=1752). I see them pretty regularly out here.

How old are the tires on the Jellison? I haven't seen white walls(even with the blue protective stuff over them) in years.

You can get brand new whitewall tires from Coker or several other vintage looking brands. You can even get Bias Ply tires as well.

It's a Nexen N'Priz AH5 all season touring tire. Probably not super old. But probably also not the best choice for a beast like that!
