Ok what's the catch on that beautiful blue Integra? It looks so clean! I'm having visions of picking it up, roadtripping home and turning it out here in CA. Does that year/model have a fatal flaw? Is it some wheezy underpowered engine? That seems like a great price for what looks to be a very clean car.

What can I say it's pretty fuckin' good, do you fuckin' want it or not?

Texts: I positively despise people who respond to CL ads with "send me your number." No, no I don't think I will. After we've discussed something then maybe you can have my number, but most idiots just say "send me your number" to everyone with no intention of calling soon. My phone is essentially for emergency use only - nobody calls me unless they really need to get a hold of me now, so I really hate it when I scramble to answer a call from some douche wondering about an ad I placed two weeks ago. I equally hate people who respond with "send me your address." What? So you can drive by at your leisure at some point in the unspecified future. *sigh* If only CL wasn't so damned useful at funding my hobbies by turning junk into cash...

Blue imperial: The flamesnrims are really quite terrible, but it looks like a damned decent car. And my favorite year! Sadly, 2014 is the Year of the RV. I must stand strong.

Integra: That Integra looks mint, but I'm not sure DAs have any real value. I think the market for them is quite small, and your best outcome would be getting what you paid for it. I really doubt it's a money-maker, and my gut says it'd be a slight money loser - something in the $500 to $1000 range. If you want a DA, I doubt you could do better. If you want to flip a DA, I think your premise is faulty. ;)

I don't know my Hondas too well. :) You just don't see them like that anymore. The few you do see are trashed. And not that awesome color.

Agreed it seems a super nice car, I just don't think there is much of a market for early Integras, nice or not. I could be way off, but I think the DAs are simply not super-desirable - rare just doesn't equal desirable. I could be way off - maybe keep your eye on this and see how long it takes to go:

That '72 Conti reminds me of my sister's '72 Mark IV that was brown on brown on brown. She paid $1500 for it in '84 and got six years out of it. That was one hell of a car.

1967 FORD T5 **VERY RARE CAR** - $7350 (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/4342599658.html)

"It was produced by Ford Motor Company for sales in Europe. Ford could not market the car as a Mustang because a European Truck Manufacturer (Krupp) had the copyright on the "Mustang" name, so Ford sold the car as a "T5". I am 47 years old, and I have never seen another T5 in person other than mine. Ford only produced around 470 of these cars in 1967, exclusively for sale in Europe.
My parents bought the car for me when I was 16 back in 1982. I drove the car from 1982-1987. I parked the car in 1987 and put a car cover over it. It has remained like that to this day. I stopped by my parents home last week to take the cover off so I could take some pics of the car."

The Baur E30 is, as advertised, very rare (a) because it's a Baur and (b) because it's a grey-market 323 (2.3-liter inline 6)--never officially soild here (we only got 325s).

And it's pretty weird looking. They did 2002s, and 320s, too, and even some E36s, I think.

Trivia: they also built the M1s and 959s. :)

I nearly bought an E21 Baur 323i in SF many years ago. I really wish I had... it would have been a neat car to own. Those grey E21 six cylinders (including the yet rarer carbed 320/6) were tough to find ten years ago, but they virtually don't exist anymore at all.

Edit: Also, that T5 is super. Maybe even better than the Frontenac you posted a while back.

I think that price is about average for that car - you could only flip it for a profit if it's totally mint and/or completely restored. You can buy runner 472 Eldos for $3k-$7k all day long, and that's what I think the one in Colorado is. Of course, if you want an El Dorado, you could almost certainly buy it, drive it, and sell it in a couple months for what you paid, but I wouldn't expect to make money on it.

There are several rather large holes due to rust. These holes are hardly visible unless you're looking straight at them or have the trunk open.

Fifth wheel is there.

A few weeks back I happened upon someone's "stash"(five or six sitting in a field next to a barn) of mid-late '60's GMC cabovers. One was a sleeper cab, actually the "sleeper" was just a tiny box added to the back of the cab. I guess that's where the term "coffin sleeper" comes from. Here (http://goo.gl/maps/Bxqmt).

I agree on the Mack.

I really don't think the top would be that big a deal. They're not exactly cheap to replace but compared to bodywork they're not that big a deal. If I bought it - which I'm not - I'd replace the top with one made from red fabric to match the interior.

thesameguy
March 3rd, 2014, 06:18 PM
The top, I'm guessing, is somewhere in the neighborhood of $2500-$3000 - assuming you do a nice canvas instead of that crap looking vinyl. A canvas top on an E36 or c900 is about two grand, and I'm betting there is another couple of yards required to do a Caddy. ;) Pocket change in the scope of that car, and it'd be well worth doing. Did I mention that vinyl looks like crap? :D

Awesome 'burban!

$3k into a decent top is reasonable for that. Bodywork, to really make it right, is probably going to be $8k+, but when it's all done, you'll be into it for less than $40,000, and in top nick, that's a $50,000 car, IMO.

Of course, that's why I prefer the coupes and sedans, which rarely top $25k in excellent condition.

Wrong 80s sports car, but can you transfer sunset plates like you can black plates?

You can't, and you technically can't transfer black plates either. Only '63 through '69 (IIRC) plates can be transferred under the "Year of Manufacture" program. I have no idea why that arbitrary window, but that's the score. That's why I was happy my '62 Falcon came with black ones. :)

KillerB
March 5th, 2014, 10:54 AM
Um... aren't black plates the 63-69 plates?

EDIT: Here's what Wikipedia has to say:

The use of year-of-manufacture (YOM) plates is authorized by Section 5004.1 [2] of the California Motor Vehicle Code. It is a law that allows vintage cars to be registered to use vintage license plates. Any officially manufactured California license plates which were produced prior to 1963 and plates on a currently registered vehicle or trailer of a corresponding model year. If used on the original plate, a sticker or metal tab that corresponds to the year of the vehicle is required.
In July, 2009, California extended its YOM program to include passenger vehicles from 1963-1969, and commercial vehicles (pick-ups, etc.) through 1972. Any black and gold plate from this era may be used on these vehicles, as long as they are "clear" with the DMV (i.e., not used, reported stolen, or no records found, for the last 10 years). A valid sticker must be attached to the plate corresponding to the year of the vehicle that is to be registered.

thesameguy
March 5th, 2014, 12:34 PM
Yes, black plates ran from '63 to '69, but they also ran before '63 and after '69 - eg, my 1962 Falcon has black plates. I don't know what's special about these particular years that required a special rule exempting older and newer ones. It's bizarre. So, like that '62 Cadillac convertible posted earlier would not be eligible for a YOM plate swap. Saying "black plate swap" is imprecise - the only thing legal is a '63 to '69 black plate swap.

Random
March 5th, 2014, 02:48 PM
My reading is that the original program was pre-'63, and they added in the '63-'69 years (-'72 for commercial and PUs), making it pre-'69 (or pre-'72).

thesameguy
March 5th, 2014, 03:12 PM
I thought that too, but when I inquired about such plates for the Cadillac, the clerk was fairly certain black plates were only valid on '63 to '69. I dunno, but that's what she said. I don't know when the crossover from black on yellow to yellow on black happened, but I think sometime around '60? I don't know what happens to those '60-'63 cars that may/should (?) have had black plates.

Model Year Date License Plates 5004.1. (a) (1) An owner of a vehicle that is a 1969 or older model-year vehicle or the owner of a commercial vehicle or a pickup truck that is a 1972 or older model-year may, after the requirements for the registration of the vehicle are complied with and with the approval of the department, utilize license plates of this state with the date of year corresponding to the model-year date when the vehicle was manufactured, if the model-year date license plate is legible and serviceable, as determined by the department, in lieu of the license plates otherwise required by this code.(2) The department may consult with an organization of old car hobbyists in determining whether the date of year of the license plate corresponds to the model-year date when the vehicle was manufactured.

Yeah the end is imprecise, too, because apparently different counties ran out of black plates at different times, so it you lived in a rural county, your 1970 vehicle may have gotten a black plate - maybe that's why they cover trucks to 1972?

I owned two Monzas for a very short period of time between Spring '88/Spring '89. The first was a beautiful blue/green '77 coupe(too bad it had a busted heater core and a driver's side door that wouldn't open from the inside) and the other was a gold '79 hatch that I bought from my uncle for $400(I paid him $100, delivered pizzas with it for a weekend and the clutch went out, I ate the $100 loss and my uncle got his POS back). At the time I owned the '77 the people who lived across the street had a Buick Skyhawk in their backyard. It never moved in the four years they owned it. For some reason as a teen I remember seeing a Vega hatch but it was wearing Monza badges.

Quite the historical rarity - a 1981 Lincoln Town Coupe (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/cto/4326656402.html) - shame about the color though. I'd feel like Dorothy Zbornak in that.

Tons of potential in this '79 Colt/Lancer A70 (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rch/cto/4329347564.html):

Even has a nice and in-tact white interior, which is pretty unusual. Too bad it's an auto.

Which is why I have decided the next vehicle in the fleet is going to be a 2003 Infiniti Qx4.

For 8k, I get a much nicer vehicle, that doesn't having timing belts.

I think '70 was the 8.2l. 472 was the biggest engine sold in '68 - it was the only engine sold in '68. Multiple engines on sale at the same time was still like a decade or more away for Cadillac.

Stock, as in "the original engine that came with the car" stock, is what surprised me. Seems to me from craigslist cruising that most guys who would do all that to a car would stick a 289 or a 302 or whatever fits in there while they were at it.

Fairlanes were gone by the late '60's, replaced by the Torino, which was replaced the the LTD II. Pretty sure the "Fairlane" he's referring to was actually the Granada.

The Monza wagon is just a Vega with a new front end, just like the Monza S hatch back was nothing more than a Vega hatchback with a new grill and badges.

I recall when the GS400 replaced the 540i as the fastest production automatic 4-door. How fondly I recall thinking, "300hp, my, that's a lot. BMW must be fuming."

I don't think I could go back to such a paltry output. The other day in the XJR we were merging onto the freeway and some doctor (I'm sure that's what he was...) in an LS430 (... because that's what he was driving) thought he'd squeeze in front of me. I rolled into the throttle and rocketed by, then remarked to my passenger, "I'm really glad I didn't go for the 740i. I could never be satisfied with 300hp."

I'm not sure what's next, but it will have a lot to do with a) when I actually tire of the XJR, b) what the XJR is worth then, and c) what I can get back out of the RV. Honestly, if everything were to work out optimally towards the end of this year, I would very likely bring home one of these:

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/4378185059.html

or

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/ctd/4359940072.html

Right now, it looks like the XJR will be a clear moneymaker, but who knows what the automotive landscape will look like in nine months. Or if it will kersplode by then. But, really, I still enjoy every minute of that land yacht. Such a fantastic mix of comfort, performance, and retro appeal. I was thinking about buying an AMG someorother, but I feel like 5+ year old AMGs are such baller/poseur cars. It'd be like driving a E65 7er. Which I would never, ever do. I know I'm buying a used luxobarge for cheap, but I don't need to advertise it. I really prefer something just slightly off the grid. ;)

No, they aren't that cheap. They're cheaper. Look harder, you'll find a better car for less. $5k should get you a Grand Prix GTP of that vintage.

I understand the weak spot on all of the w-body cars is the transmission, but for the most part repairs on those cars are silly cheap. I'm talking $30 name-brand brake rotors and $20 water pumps. Oh, given the penchant for CO cars to get broken windshields, I'd skip cars with HUDs as replacement glass is expensive.

You could also look at post-oval Tauruses for that money. I understand the facelift cars had a fair amount of mechanical improvements underneath and have proven reliable.

I suspect you're in the MY2003-2005 range for these cars at $5k.

I read every one of those ads and am stunned. I had no idea they were that much cheaper than similar Hondas and Toyotas. I've just never looked at American cars (other than OLD American cars).

I started out with VWs but have owned 1 Mitsu, 1 Toyota, and 1 Honda since 1992. My wife has had Hondas (but only three, and the first had around 200K when I met her) in the 18-19 years I've known her.

And in my at least 35 years of being really aware of cars, I have watched my parents, neighbors, and friends burn through American car after American car and I've watched Japanese cars quietly last for decades.

I should probably take a good look at American cars when my Honda finally dies. However, at only 204K, that could be some time.

Thanks for all those links.

What I've always liked about driving American cars, which I have done plenty of even though I've never personally owned one:

They put the automatic shifter levers on the column where they belong, up out the way.
No center console on the floor! At over 6' tall, I enjoy extra leg and knee room.

I think American cars, especially mid-size ones, are suffering mostly from a bad reputation earned in the '80s and early '90s (vis a vis Japanese counterparts) and an ongoing styling and image deficit. Beginning in the late '90s these cars really began to shed their poor build quality problems and make big inroads on the driving experience. I think what they're suffering from now is a simple lack of perceived quality and positive image, and not actual problems. I think it's a little ironic given the problems that Toyota and Honda have had with quality, styling and dynamics in the last several years, but whatever. If people would rather drive a $5,000 '90s Accord than an '00s Taurus for the same money, that's their decision. ;)

I had one of these as a rental car and remember it being a very comfortable and roomy car. This price seems high given recent discussion but wow, 33,000 miles?! I'd buy this if I could confidently expect to put another 100K on it without costly major surgeries to keep it running, but frankly I don't that kind of confidence in American cars.

2001 Dodge Intrepid - LOW MILES, Excellent Condition - $5990 (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/4284343031.html)

"33K all original miles on this Dodge Intrepid. Phenomenal condition, with newer tires and brakes, recently charged up AC. Interior is in excellent condition as well."

I can hear my father, mechanic, and everyone else now: "You bought a nineteen year old car?!

Damn right! Right away I see it has two features I like and would rather not be without - exterior key locks for the passenger side door and the trunk. I use those regularly and am always annoyed with my wife's car which has neither. And no TPMS! I can air up her tires and the light will still be on! No thanks. I'll also pass on computerized odometers; I prefer the analog ones where the numbers actually turn. Yeah, yeah, I know...

I love Intrepids, and I can name at least one other person on this forum who does as well. When they made them, there were always my go-to for rentals. I'm not positive I'd want to own one - at least not in the face of all the other interesting cars out there - but I might.

Side story: My first experience with the Intrepid was its cousin, the Eagle Vision. A friend of a friend had been involved in a lawsuit, and when he got his settlement he went out and bought one. We were all maybe 22 at the time, and a brand new Eagle Vision was a pretty special car. In retrospect, it was kinda weird being 22 with a brand new grandpa car, but whatever. It was really nice. :D

The Intrepids have some issues with transmissions and head gaskets. They don't age gracefully. But I think they tend to be pretty good up through 100k, so you might win on a low-mileage one. I'm really not sure whether their problems are the result of age, mileage, or just the fact they're a middle America car and tend to get beaten.

A friend of mine has almost that exact Avalon, though his is light blue. I think his is also a '96. Same stupid-low mileage. It was inherited from a relative - they bought a new Avalon. (What is it with people handing down Toyotas?) Never has any problems, it just goes and goes. The interior is pretty dated, and it's definitely more mid '90s Toyota than mid '90s Benz, but as far as appliances go it's really not bad. It's not fast and doesn't handle well, but it's comfortable, so whaddaya want?

I'll answer that question: Something newer. Don't trade one 15+ year old car for another, unless you're doing it for fun. You probably won't win anything for doing it, and will probably lose something. The Devil you know...

Don't trade one 15+ year old car for another...

This was the overwhelmingly unanimous advice I received when I wanted to buy my neighbor's very nice Accord. That one is gone now and apparently has been replaced with an larger Infiniti sedan - I'll call it the Infinity "Maxima" because I don't know the number. G35, maybe? I haven't over there to talk cars since he got it, but we will do this eventually as the weather gets warmer.

I believe I advised you to do just that - drive the Tahoe out here to sell and drive home in something cool and old.

Was yours 4x4? If not, that might be part of the difference. There aren't nearly as many 2WD SUVs and pickups around here as compared to other places I've lived.

You could have been ca-chinging it all the way home in this beauty, for example, with extra cash left over to fill the tank with gas and the trunk with, well...whatever else you might want to bring home from Colorado.

From a quick look, the price is in the middle of similar trucks, I just think the market for a full size, V8, 2WD truck, especially in NorCal, is tiny. If he wants it gone fast, he's going to have to undercut a lot of other sellers.

I'll give the guy a call tomorrow and see what the story is. It isn't nothing for a car with expensive parts but which has never appreciated very much. OTOH, a clean original car not needing too much would be a nice little runaround car, and considering the driving dynamics of the old car I have now (which is actually probably soon for Craigslist..)...

I've always liked the wedge, I'll be honest. They look like nothing else out there and compared with the older TRs and spits, they're worlds better to drive, even if nobody loves them.

Under $2k guy is awesome!

We have two places near here than specialize in $2500 cars - plus or minus, but right around $2500. Some of those cars are terrifying. When I was shopping for the Mercedes, one of the guys had a $2400 E320 for sale, which I went and looked at. Three of the four windows didn't work, the hood closed crooked, the power locks did not work, the driver's side of the car had been keyed, and while it did run it took about 7 seconds to engage D or R when shifting from the other. It was a disaster area - and if it was that bad on the surface, you know it was turible underneath. I don't know how much that car went for at auction, but I'd love to! :D

I am not sure what I'm looking for in this $2000 car other than good fuel economy and an automatic. It's gotta go back and forth to SF frequently. That's a tall order - 100 mile road trips in a car that cheap that isn't a manual is scary to me. We're shopping '90s and earlier cars with automatics. That's old cars with shit transmissions and lots of miles.

No one hates car payments more than I, and my history with cars certainly proves that, but this sounds like a case of simple economics. It might be worth looking into putting the $2000 down on a $5000 reliable Honda or Toyota and taking a two or three-year loan from the credit union or local bank. Make payments, yes, but small ones and have peace of mind on those 100-mile trips.

I post this thinking you're helping someone else shop.

One thing that will drive you NUTS on these cars is the brake light controller. Take a look at how many Camrys of that vintage do weird things when they hit the brakes--some lights go on, some lights go off, some lights don't change. We ran through a couple controllers on Mapper's first car--I was just about to bypass the damn thing and hard-wire the brake lights when we sold it.

I fear that we'd have to go early '90s to get that car, if not older. Although there is this:

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/4395230290.html

Two gold Accord wagons? Maybe.

Unfortunately a car payment is not an option. She has a two year old repo (co-bought a car, other owner stopped making payments) and would have a difficult time proving income sufficient to offset that ding. If the right car came along I'd cover the difference and she could pay me back, but I don't want to go into the solution with that in mind.

Yet again, I'd really like to find a mid/late '90s FWD Volvo. A '96-'98 850/S/V70 would be perfect. Not ideal gas mileage, but safe, comfortable, and pretty cheap to maintain. Something like this:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/cto/4402170787.html

I'd also almost look into another W124, too.

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/4387983497.html

We have several good Mercedes shops in the area, and now that I have some knowledge about them I can be a resource. There are just a couple stupid-expensive W124 parts I'm not sure someone buying a $2000 car should be on the hook for. Heh.

These two cars:

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/4387446507.html
http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/4401207223.html

were for sale when I bought mine back in January. The first one may be nice, but the asking price is too high. The second one was previously for sale in Rancho Cordova, so I think it actually got bought and broke in the intervening two months. A water pump is a trivial repair, but I think "water pump" is actually code for "head gasket" just like O2 censor" [sic] is code for "catalytic converter." Still tempting, and I do like those AMG wheels... :D

I had a girlfriend with a brand new 4-cyl automatic Mustang. I don't remember the year, but she had a "car phone" installed if that gets you any idea. It looked like the one above - toward the later end of the Fox body run.

We (but mostly I) drove it from Charlotte to Pittsburgh and back. We got passed by everyone - Yugos, VW Buses, Gramps with his hat driving an Oldsmobuick, kids on bicycles, etc.

And I can tell you this is not a way to make your girlfriend happy, even though you're doing the driving:

A brand new car with black interior while eating...

...original crispy tacos from Taco Bell while driving...

...at night in the dark so you can't tell if and where the pieces of shattered taco shell and shredded cheese and lettuce are spilling.

thesameguy
April 1st, 2014, 02:15 PM
My girlfriend wouldn't care, but that would drive me INSANE. I wouldn't even consider eating something that shattered in my car. Sometimes on road trips we'll stop for fast food en route, and I always order something simple, like "bean burrito" that is easily manageable with one hand and doesn't tend to make a mess. She invariably orders crispy tacos and nachos and the whole time we're driving I'm thinking, "Really? Really? An entire menu of food and you choose the two most likely to leave shit everywhere?" Drives me up the wall.

Those Lima-powered Mustangs are not fast. I think they are very close to 3000lbs and have 115hp. Maybe 125 in the last years. Reasonably torquey and quick to 30 or 40mph, but that's it. So, so slow. And not helped by a A4LD automatic. But the Lima is super durable and cheap to service, the A4LD is laughably understressed, and you really have to fuck up to break that car. OTOH, not safe and probably a little scary in bad weather.

Buying cheap cars is much easier when you can drive a manual transmission. I've looked at a bunch of cars that would be fine with a manual that I'd never consider with an auto - like the glut of high-mileage E36s. Which reminds me, I did try to find a 528e, but E34 5ers have gotten so rare that even the 528s are starting to command a lot of money. Crazy. On the subject of transmissions though, there are a handful of cars (including '80s Mustangs) that I would be willing to help out on with the thought of a future Lemons-mobile if she'd go for a manual... I'd turbo up that Mustang and tear around Sears Point for a while, but wrapping a transmission swap into a Lemons car is rough, and I'm certainly not going to drive an automatic.

Random

Was there an eta-engined E34?!

edit: no. I think you're conflating the E28s and E34s.

edit 2: the nice thing about E34s (IMHO) is the availability of the wagon...but not for $2k, I'm guessing. The 2.5-liter engine choices are pretty straightforward, though: either the M20 or the M50, both shared with the 325s of their respective time periods.

thesameguy
April 1st, 2014, 02:26 PM
Shit, yeah, E28. I was looking at E34 525s and got that in my head. :)

I'd like an E28 528e. The problem with the E34 is that's when BMWs started getting more complex with more electrical doodads to mess with the owner... Although an early 525i is probably pretty brain dead...

Why are we not looking at 3800-equipped GM cars? They are pretty much the only cheap cars I'd trust an automatic transmission in. Just avoid the supercharged ones and you should be fine, plus there's plenty to choose from:

- Buick Park Avenue, LeSabre, Century, Regal
- Oldsmobile Intrigue, 88, 98, LSS
- Pontiac Grand Prix

thesameguy

Fuel economy, primarily. Those are all mid 20s cars on their best day, and I'm not entirely sure they're transmissions are that reliable. There's also the rough bit that many of them have been sucked up into the donk/scraper/dub crowd - all the '90s Buicks are on dubs, and all the '80s Buicks are on Daytons. Heh. Maintenance on them is kinda a PITA - big engine, small space. I wouldn't go as far as to rule them out, but they have a number of strikes against. On a personal level a supercharged one would be worth the potential headaches, but for a cheap/reliable/efficient car seeker, I'm not certain they fit the bill.

Edit: There is the potential advantage of buying some Regal on 22s, junkyarding some factory wheels, and then making money back on the 22s, though... heh. :D

I seem to recall the Taco Bell was our only choice somewhere in the mountains of WVa, where we exited the highway to let everyone by who had been stuck behind us as we crawled up the hills - motorhomes, kids on skateboards, turtles, etc.

That car was probably loads faster than anything I've owned but I remember the feeling of driving a BRAND NEW MUSTANG that looked awesome - she had sprung for the optional alloy wheels and wider tires than the typical 4-cyls came with and it looked BADASS. And then we got dusted by minivans in the mountains.

...and you REALLY thing a Vulcan Taurus will be better? They're notoriously bad gas guzzlers.

The 3.0 OHV benefits from EDIS and SMPFI, which the "Vulcan" motor did not. It's no Civic, but in the landscape of full-size cars from its era, it's not especially good or bad. EPA says 20 combined, versus 21 in a 3.8l Regal. Not worth getting upset about. But the reason for the Vulcan instead of the 3800 or a 60V6 would be serviceability. The 3.0 is *tiny* in the Taurus's engine bay, which was designed to fit the DOHC V8 SHO motor. It's like a 5.3l in a full size Chevy. Just sittin' there in the middle, minding its own business. Spark plugs, alternators, and filters are all silly-easy to service. Look at this thing!

http://www.justanswer.com/uploads/fordanswerman/2009-08-31_210708_vulcan_3_liter_96_99.jpg

With shit transmissions IME.

That was true of the first two generations and maybe the oval Tauruses - the metric transmission was a 90,000 mile unit on its best day. But towards the end of the oval cars and certainly with the introduction of the non-oval ones, the AX4N was pretty well sorted and the weak spots addressed. I don't think it's a great transmission, but no worse than the 4T60/65 - at least by the end of its run. My friend the Ford mechanic says they almost never saw/see the 4th gen Tauruses with transmission problems. Shopping around on Craigslist, the number of GM vs Ford "needs transmission work" cars is like 3:1 or 4:1. That could very well be a function of the crowd that seems to be buying the GM cars, but I guess the point is I'm not seeing a lot of 4th gen Tauruses that need transmission work.

From the Sacramento CL - this looks like a good one if you don't mind REALLY high mileage:

I am not 100% opposed to a ChryCo product. Despite not being fun, I've found the PT Cruiser to be reasonable and fairly inexpensive to work on. In fact, if I can get my act together quickly enough there is a reasonable chance the Benz goes to SoCal, and the PTC goes to my friend. It's not a long term solution, but it would get her on wheels quickly. The PT is in good shape mechanically (the transmission is probably dying, but it's probably got tens of thousands of miles left on it) but is in terrible shape cosmetically. It wasn't good when I got it, and it's gone downhill. It's not worth much on the open market, but still totally viable transportation. I'd just give it to her if timing can work out.

Wow. It really is tough to find anything for $2K.

It is, and narrowing down the field with "gas mileage" and "automatic" and "100 miles reliably" really, really narrows down the field. I bought the XR4Ti for $350 and spent $59 at Aamco having a band adjusted and drove it for two years without incident. I bought the Fiero for $1700 and bought $250 in tires and could have driven it for a year without incident (but I then spend $800 on brakes, $500 on suspension, and $1000 on wheels/tires ). Both "100 miles reliably," but neither "gas mileage" or "automatic." A dash of "I can't fix cars" and "I can't pay someone to fix cars" results in three, maybe four cars in any given city that will work. I'm hopin' to nab one! :D

A Maxima could totally work. Probably a Maxima of any year - they were really decent! Although working on 'em is a bitch.

I keep coming back to Aleros as they are a great intersection of a lot of virtues (including undesirable and thus cheap!) but they are SO unsafe. When shopping $2k cars you don't have a full control over all the variables, so there's that, but if it's a $2k Volvo 850 or a $2k Olds Alero, I'd choose the Volvo. Of course, that's because I can fix the Volvo so the additional age doesn't bug me. It's hard to invoke someone else's priorities when car shopping. I have to get over myself.

I'M SOLID!

The problem with "timing belt just went" is that the result is invariably catastrophic head damage, so a $200 timing belt service becomes a $700-$800 timing belt service. Plus $100 in towing, and then it's ~$1500 car, and I might as well buy a running one... because the big problem with a non-running one is that there is no way to know what sort of the shape the transmission or AC is in. That's a big problem with shopping for cheap cars you don't have a greater interest in... one stupid problem can totally blow up the value proposition. A $550 Volvo that needs $800 in work is not so bad... but if it then turns out to need another $500 in work you've started digging a potentially very deep hole.

I wish I could replicate that '98 V70 I bought... $700, known running, transmission needed. That was a good setup. ;)

What's weird is a general dearth of '00ish small to midsize cars. I guess when shitty cars get to be too old, they just break and disappear. Maybe decompose?

I asked my mechanic that when he shook his head sadly and pulled the sheet up over my '94 Camry V6. He said they go to Mexico eventually.

Amusingly, pretty much all of George's last car posts, you'd get basically the same cars here for the same money.

Although the Volvo probably wouldn't sell very well. They're not what you'd call a sought after car here.

Also obviously, not so much with the USDM cars here.

That Maxima is super - I forgot to look at them last night. I gotta believe that's a low price and something is wrong with it, but maybe not. If a Stratus is a $1200 car no reason a Maxima can't be a $2200 one. :D

For my own sanity, pickups are out. There are so many reasons why one would be a good fit, but they are so dangerous - especially in wet weather - I just wouldn't feel comfortable being involved with someone using one as a long distance cruiser. I know way too many people who have randomly spun out in pickups (one of whom got severely injured) I just couldn't deal with that.

And it does have to be an auto, which rules out a bunch of otherwise good, cheap cars.

I also keep coming back to Mercedes. All the parts I've shopped for mine have been very affordable, and I've yet to find a truly terrible job to do on one. There is something attractive about RWD from a maintenance perspective.

And, yep, Geo Prizm = GM Corolla. Like a Geo Metro = GM Swift, or Geo Storm = GM Impulse. aka "We can't figure out how to make a small car so we'll just buy them from other people and resell them." For years the Chevy Nova and Geo Prizm received top marks as car values because you got Toyota cars at Chevy prices.

Hard to find older Hondas that don't look a little ratty, but Earl Scheib could fix this one right up.

"This is a 93 accord. This car has been my baby for awhile but i have two cars and i cant afford to insure both. I have done almost everything possible to this motor to make it run forever. It has 149k on it and it runs like new. Not one issue. It needs nothing mechanically whatsoever.
I have put over $1500 into this car in mantnense alone. It is a bone stock 2.2liter 4 cylinder besides the intake and breather. I have the original airbox and intake if desired. I could go on and on with the list of things ive done but it would take too long so its better if you are a serious buyer only! just to call me for any info you need. I know everyting about this car. Just a slight list.
Brand new timing belt
Brand new waterpump
All new seals and pullys were installed when timing belt job was done. That alone costed me 890 dallors.
Brand new distributer
Brand new spark plugs
Brand new spark plug wires
Brand new radiator fan
Brand new valve cover gasket kit installed New fuel filter
Coolent flush
Tranny flush
2 New motor mounts
Bright! New headlight bulbs
Brand new headlights as well. Perfectly clear New tires with lots of tread left

Always change oil every 3000 miles with castrol full synthetic and always pump 91 octane gas! Since the day i bought the car. Ac works perfectly and is ice cold on a 93! Thats rare to see now days. Heater works grest as well. Like i said theres much more if u have any questions just call me anytime txt is ok too. But serious buyers only please.
Iam in no hurry to sell my car it runs perfect and gets excellent gas milage. The motor and interior are 10/10. The exterior is in great cond. Just has a white fromt bumper and a black fender due to a minor fender bendet i got into. But this is just cosmetic. Otherwise the car is perfect.
That is the only reason my price is so low. Overall this car is clean!! And extremely well taken care of. I wouldnt hesitste to drive it to l.a and back right now. They have accords on here with no maintnense and tons of miles. Not to metion beat to hell for the same price iam asking."

Tangentially related, I can't count the number of cars I've bought with sole intention of Earl Scheib'ing or Maaco'ing them, but the same thing always happens - I get attached to the car and then I don't want some hamfisted tech ruining it with a paintjob that looks awful in two years. I'm there right now with the Falcon - back and forth as to whether I'm okay with $500 paintjob or I want to go full-tilt and spend three or four grand. Instead I do nothing. Fail.

I also bought a badass compressor so I could run a media blaster and a paint gun, and that's still a possibility. I am *really* close to just tarping off the garage and trying something like that on the Volvo. Can't make it worse! :D

OMG, I forgot how awful that generation of tbird was... what a PILE. Looks to be in nice shape, though... maybe they bought it and were too embarrassed to be seen in it?

I also quite like Sleezy - too bad about no straight eight though... that's really the point of an older Buick, isn't it?

And, of course, with more time and lots more money, that horse van would be a SWEET RV. Throw something like a BMW V12 (just to keep it interesting), some skylights, and convert the space between the axles to basement storage and there could be something really neat there.

How the eff did Paul smog his turbo 6er?

The Space Van is incredibly intriguing, but I'm am wondering exactly what the broken ice maker consists of? My friend had a 4WD Space Van in high school, and the thing was terrifying. Partly on account of his driving, but IIRC the 4WD models had a couple extra inches of ground clearance. I wish it was closer, because I would go look at it today! Maybe that Revcon will get up to SJ this weekend and I can do both. (What could possibly be weirder than buying an RV and a Space Van on one trip?)
