Tsg, jag v12? Are you trying to keep the thing parked?

Ford V10 in it. The Studebaker Lark is screaming my name. That thing is sooooooo cool.

I asked my mechanic that when he shook his head sadly and pulled the sheet up over my '94 Camry V6. He said they go to Mexico eventually.

Ah yes, where old American cars go on to long and strange second lives when they're too used up for the auction circuit.

-------

Last week's TR-8 dropped off CL and was never heard from again.

Soon the LeMans will be offered.

This week's selection:

http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/4396698930.html (http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/4396698930.html)

More or less exactly the car I'm looking for at the moment - but awfully pricey for something that's got evident rust issues, among other things.

Time for a Studebaker Lark grudge match! :hard:

In this corner, we have the reigning champion:

The perfect sub-$2k commuter car:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/cto/4386949093.html
http://images.craigslist.org/00q0q_22pM59Lsc61_600x450.jpg

"Rare unique classic 1959 Studebaker Lark 2 door.
NOT running. told it needs distributor cap. flat 6 cylinder engine + manual transmission.
NO title just bill of sale. Has keys. Was a donation I got two years ago.
Unique straight clean project for the Studebaker enthusiast.
PRICE JUST LOWERED TO NOW only $1,959."

So, we have a 6-cylinder, 3-on-the-tree that doesn't run and the guy it for free but it now trying to get $2K for it on CL and isn't bright enough not to mention the ultimate negotiation point: his cost is zero. :p

I think we can all agree it looks great.

Cool, awesome, I want it, gimme it now, outta my way, etc.

And in this corner, we have a strong contender for the title of Most Wanted Lark on the GTXF:

1961 Studebaker Lark V8 3spd +o/d and Positraction - $1750 (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/4422963847.html)

"Regretfully I must sell my 1961 Studebaker Lark Cruiser it has it original 259 Studebaker v8 2 barrel carburetor. And 3 speed column shift manual transmission with over drive. And twin traction/posi traction rear end. It's surprisingly fast for 1961 it could do 0-60 in 9.5 seconds making it the fastest economy car in the early 60's and faster than most full size American cars of the time. The car currently runs and drives. It could use a tune up and tires soon. It has a new clutch and rebuilt column shifter and new tail light lens. I don't want to sell this car but I have to many other project cars that are on the table ahead of this one and don't want to see it neglected. needs a loving home. clean Colorado title"

I think I prefer the six, but 4 doors trumps all... and boasting the "fastest economy car" title is nothing to sneeze at. My vote is firmly for the green meanie. Plus, it can be called the green meanie.

Nothing wrong mechanically with the car, its all cosmetic work that needs done. Paint is a must along with minor body work on the pass door. Interior needs arm rest, shift boot, and ebrake cover. Dash has a few cracks over the cluster and one small tear on driver door. Runs perfect and just had its timing belt done within the last 40k kms so about 25k miles ago. Ready to be drifted or slammed whatever your taste is its ready for you! Car is 100% legal with colorado title and is insured."

I also can't help but laugh at that XT... I love those cars, but $8k? Also not sure where he put the $10k, because it obviously wasn't in the interior.

Josh, definitely go get that 4-door Lark. 4-doors seem pretty difficult to find, at they're the final, finishing, frumpy touch on a frumpy car. If I'd built up the courage to sell the Falcon, I'd probably buy it!

I started thinking about where I would get interior parts and body panels, and found the only way that story ends is with my backyard filled with decaying Studebakers that the city will fine me into bankruptcy over.

Not so much scared, just realised that it would (for my purposes) be nearly unusable without significant investment (in both time and cash)- after which, it would still be (at best) unsuitable.

80 miles a day would be a bit silly if it were in good to great shape- in the condition that thing is in it would be ridiculous and crazy.

Studebaker International (http://www.studebaker-intl.com/)(located in an old Studebaker plant) is a treasure trove of NOS parts. Before they came into being a company called Sasco(Studebaker Auto Supple Co.) was the go to source(they were located in the Studebaker Design Center(now torn down) and they had a glass display case FULL of old plastic promotional models). I loved going there because the entire place was filled with all sorts of Studebaker goodies. And the owner drove an unrestored Studebaker Champ pickup.

Okay, so this is for sale. (http://wenatchee.craigslist.org/cto/4393918892.html) And I'm pretty sure I can pick this up for half of what they're asking. I wouldn't ordinarily consider these anymore, but they're so rare that this might actually merit buying.

I even told my partner at one point that this, along with a good Citroen CX25 Turbo 2, is a "Moby Dick" kind of situation for me, tried many times, never succeeded, and that I'd break my rule of max 2 cars to get one.

These cars were never very good, but I've always wanted one and had many "near misses" - I've gone to see probably seven of them, which might be more Stradas than anybody else in the world has gone to see in about 20 years. Needs plenty, but cheap and more than likely one of the last chances to actually own one. They've been rare a long time, soon they'll be extinct outside of collections.

The Merc wagon and the QP III are both fantastic.

The problem with the QP III is that people think it's related to a BiTurbo (since it looks kind of like a giant BiTurbo) and that the costs will be the same. They won't. Running a QPIII is more like running a Bora or a Khamsin, and the associated costs and needs are just as difficult.

Great car though - really comfy inside and you feel like some sort of banana republic dictator when you're in one.

This thing's (http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/ctd/4428015649.html) been for sale forever:

http://images.craigslist.org/00D0D_j3vfYrzjzde_600x450.jpg

Some new pics make it look more attractive, though a thorough rust check would be needed (like all Mopars built between 1950 and 1980, there's often lots of rot).

A guy who used to have a shop around the corner from me bought a QP at an auction and was bound and determined to fix it up. It was in very good shape cosmetically, but non-running. Everything on that car is expensive, and even worse almost unobtainable in the US. You'd think that Maserati having a presence in the US would facilitate that stuff, but nope. c2014 Maserati dealerships don't have access to anything old whatsoever. Too bad, they are nice cars.

Also, that Ventura is the hotness!

It's the same with Fiat. The old Fiats might as well be from another planet. But with Maseratis it's probably more pronounced. When the QP III was new, it was a fairly high volume car for Maserati - not like the Biturbo but still, the most produced car of the classic era Masers. But even then, they only made about 2000 of them over more than a decade. Maserati's sales goal last year for the new QP was 13,000 units. Just under double the entire production run of classic V8 cars from the 5000GT through the last QPIII/Royale.

It's a different world we live in now, and the economics of the exotics have changed. They only ones which are truly rare now are the really high dollar machines, which was not the case in the 1970s and 1980s. Though the QPIII/Lagonda/TurboR etc. were not particularly cheap when new, they weren't $850,000. You want something produced in those volumes today and it has to be totally bespoke. Probably the rarest Maserati of the classic era - the 5000GT, only cost between $150,000 and $200,000 in today's dollars. That's for a totally bespoke car with performance numbers akin to the Bugatti Veryon in that era.

Not surprising then, that nouveau-riche Maserati dealers are totally disconnected in all but name from classic Maserati support.

I am quite fascinated by something Jay Leno recently did: his shop has 3D printers, and they designed and prototyped several revisions of a small bracket or something for one of his old, rare cars. Once they got it so that it would fit, they gave the dimensions to a company that makes parts for old cars, and that company is planning to produce it is part of their kits for that type of car in the future.

I can imagine a network of stuff like that, owners of older cars banding together to create a catalog of hardware dimensions so that they can order/print parts as needed, rather than searching the world to find more.

But perhaps if you're trying to stay factory correct/accurate, and/or your big problems are electrical and mechanical bits whose functionality can't be replicated or replaced without ruining whatever vehicle serenity the owner is going for, that won't help much.

thesameguy
April 21st, 2014, 11:01 AM
I've seen situations where that exact scenario is unfolding, and of course you've got people sharing those types of products via emachineshop et al. I can think of a few parts I have on my various cars right now which are the result of one guy's idea that evolved through several refinements to result in a "mass manufactured" (like, a dozen  ) product... the front brakes on both the Fiero and the XR4Ti, the transmission mount on the XR4Ti, the seat rails on the SPG, etc. Just in time manufacturing combined with rapid prototyping is an awesome combo for sure.

It's probably either on the verge of a repo or stolen - my money's on the former. It could also be a legitimate paperwork problem, but 2011 seems too new for something like a NLA lienholder or something along those lines.

George

...on the verge of a repo...

How does that work? Seller gets cash on the street from some shady character and then reports it stolen? Insurance then pays off the loan?

Clever, if that's the deal...but seems like that ought to be a back-alley verbal deal with someone you know, not on CL for the world to discuss.

Things like this have always fascinated me - figuring out the perfect crime, etc. Fortunately my fear of the stoney lonesome keeps me from participating in all but the most benign misdemeanors.

thesameguy

I am constantly surprised at how open a lot of crime is... I mean, silkroad was not even a secret!

I suspect someone who is selling something that is shortly going to become stolen property (as an un-executable repo would) would want to sell it someone who is a complete stranger, that way when it finally comes out the car is stolen the person holding the property has nobody to point a finger at - "I got it from some guy!" I say this because it's happened to me, sort of - I bought a wrecked car from someone, and six or eight months later the police showed up on my doorstep inquiring about a stolen car. The only reason they knew who I was is because I'd called the lot that was holding the car to confirm they knew to let my tow truck driver in. Anyway, apparently this guy wrecked his car and his insurance totaled it, and he sold it to me. He should have signed the title over to the insurance and let them come get it - he effectively stole the car from them. I showed them my paperwork (the title, bill of sale, etc. - which fortunately I'd kept!) and they went to go hunt him down. Not sure you could get away with that if you didn't even have the title.

Amazingly, there was a couple here locally that stole or came into possession of stolen cars and sold a handful of them on CL. Always the same deal - meet in a parking lot ("for safety") and then provide a bill of sale and an "Application for Duplicate Title" with fake info to an unwary buyer. Poor schmuck would show up at the DMV trying to register a stolen car and then have some 'splainin' to do to the CHP. I think that couple processed four or five cars before they were caught. Always the same thing too - a very common older car (I know of one Camry and one Accord) sold for just slightly below market... Something easy to steal that could be flipped quickly, and a few grand in their pocket. If they'd stopped after one or two they probably never would have been caught. Average looking people selling an average car in a random parking lot...

Anyway, that's why I always snap a photo of the seller's driver's license and compare it against the information on the paperwork. Except one time, with a cool chick I thought I could trust... who later abandoned "my" unregistered car on the Bay Bridge...

Not a Kompressor, but I am strongly considering something V12 as a replacement for the XJR. Maybe an S600 or SL600. Because.

Edit: Although I recently almost cried when I thought the XJR threw a code for a multi-cylinder misfire and I was going to replace eight $120ea ignition coils. That would probably suck quite terribly on a V12.

Other search words I use, in addition to "rare"

"rare*" - gets stuff like "none rarer" or "rarest", once in a while.
"resto*" - gets restomod and restored and restoration, etc.
"surviv*" - survivor, survived all these years, etc.
"rod" - you'll get a lot of engine problem vehicles but also rat rods, hot rods, etc.

"original" in Title field plus a low Max year brings in some older cars in nice shape where the word original is used in the title - "17K original miles", "original owner", etc.

"wagon" in the Title field plus a low Max year will bring you the cool old station wagons and Dodge Power Wagons without showing you a zillion late-model Subarus.

I have always loved those cars, I love Jag V12s, and if I could find one in very nice shape with highly-functional AC I would very possibly make an exception to my age rule. I have wanted one since I bought my first car, but never executed because I've never found the right one. Just to play devil's advocate ... $18K is high for that car, even if it is rare. The Iaccoca connection, were it real, might lend some weight to that asking price, but it can't be. Lee Iaccoca worked at ford until the summer of 1978 and this guy bought this car in 1976. I highly doubt Lido rolled up to his office - in the same building with Henry Ford II - in an Imperial rather than Lincoln or a Ford at that time. In 1974 I think he was driving a Lincoln MKIV.

I'd like to meet the owner of the 180 to shake his hand and hear his stories.

180s are overpriced because they're so useful as bush planes. Barons (and other piston twins) are cheap to buy because they're expensive to run and now there are plenty of singles that are as or more capable. The additional licensing requirements are a factor, and insurance is high because, contrary to what you might expect, twins have a higher loss rate than singles. Most piston twins are a real handful and terrible performers on one engine.

That Piper Cherokee on the other hand is just about perfect and right in the sweet spot of price vs performance.

Less than three years on the Challenger note, and then I'm planning on buying something that starts with a P, has an air cooled engine, and has a motor built in... Pennsylvania. :D

I'd really like the Cherokee's big brother, the Comanche. Retractable gear, higher gross weight, and the airframe was built in Lock Haven, PA. The Cherokees still have Lycoming engines made in PA but the airframes were built in Vero Beach, FL.

Dream plane is a Comanche 400, which has the Lycoming O-720 - a 720 cubic inch, 400 hp flat-8. But I'd be fine with a Comanche 180.

That looks like way too much fun. Based on the designation and year, it's a homebuilt/experimental, and not certified, which can lead to insurance issues.

...not to mention, putting your life in the hands of an airplane built by someone of questionable skill. On the other hand, it's old enough that if it was going to go to pieces it probably would have already.

They're about $150k. The crazy thing is, with airplane financing, I could afford it about as easily as the Challenger. But as cool as it is, I kind of want something older yet more useful.

thesameguy
April 23rd, 2014, 11:17 PM
I definitely understand the more useful, especially given the price tag of the replica and it's likely-to-be-weak US incarnation - unless they classify it as an experimental I guess.

I know two people with pilot's licenses, and one of them has partnerships in three or four planes and the other owns between three and six older planes at any given moment. Mike - the guy with partnerships - seems to have the better approach as the cost of entry is quite low and he is able to slide around partnerships pretty easily, like trading timeshares. Although Eric has by far and away the more interesting stuff, Mike has both practical and fun stuff all the time. Plus, it seems with shared craft you stand a good chance of getting together with someone who likes maintaining as much or more than flying, which certainly helps keep costs down!

You force me to search to quench my curiosity. 2.2-2.9 according to a quick search. Which is a joke compared to my favorite WWII warplane, the P38. The only one I found was 6.8 million... Ya know, chump change.

Godson

lol, also from the point that there were more than 15k produced of the P51 vs ~10k of the P38.

Also of importance might be from the difference in original purchase price at nearly double for the P38 (~97k/unit)over the P51(~50k/unit).

Taimar
April 24th, 2014, 08:53 AM
The price of keeping a genuine WW2 plane going is also a factor. For the WW2 planes that operate near me, given my exposure to aviation in recent years, there's lots of behind-the-scenes tech stuff going on for them all the time. For that money, you could probably own and operate your own Embraer Brasilia and literally be able to fly yourself around the country with a gaggle of your friends in G-IV style comfort (though not speed).

KillerB
April 24th, 2014, 10:23 AM
Yeah, military planes require many hours of maintenance per hour of flight time.

Fractional ownership is a great deal, but when I was in a flying club, there were a lot of annoying things about it, too. I think I'd rather just own my own basic plane, so I can keep it how and where I want, and fly where and when I want.

Last year we plowed through the entire series of Supernatural on Netflix, minus the last season which still isn't available. I spent a lot of time looking at '68 Chevelles. A lot. Supernatural is in rarified company of TV shows that have encouraged me to purchase a specific car. :D

That Super and New Yorker are both, um, super. But with a $1500 spread between them, it's clearly the Buick - straight beats bent any day.

BTW, my secret weapon for today was the search word "paint". That leaves out most "regular" cars and gets to the ads that talk about paint - needs paint, fresh paint, custom paint, etc. Give it a try sometime.

That bronze Maverick is pretty darned nice looking!

Thinking about it, Mavericks might be the one car I'd broadly prefer a 2-door over a 4-door. Something about the rear haunches looks so much better in a coupe.

novicius

Agreed -- but I think the Mav's overall size is better suited to today's sensibilities (and my girl's comfort level): most cars are significantly smaller (and better packaged, of course) than in decades past. A four-door Torino or Galaxie is *huge*!

We had a Maverick in the '70s in Vermont. We moved away in 1978 so it had to have been '78 or earlier, which meant any Maverick wasn't that old at the time. I can remember my father filling the rust holes on the tops of the front fenders with fiberglass goo from a jar so it would pass inspection. IIRC, you couldn't have any rust holes completely through (which these definitely were) the metal on the upper half of the car, or something like that.

How about something in the middle: Comanche 250?

First - I love Pontiacs. Grew up with them my whole life. Phoenix, 6000, 6000 STE, Grand AM and my parents 65 Bonneville Vert.

2nd - That car ticks all the boxes. Wagon, green, Pontiac.

But, I could easily build something for probably 1/4-1/2 of the price that would be pretty much the same. Seems pretty obvious this guy got his car on Drive and is now trying to cash in something fierce. Can't blame him but theRe is no way I would pay that kind of cash for a car with manual brakes, no ac, no radio etc.

Yeah, the Comanche 250 is really the best compromise, if you find it at the right price. That one fits the bill. Just has to wait until the Challenger is paid off.

Moving to the land of $800,000 houses makes $47,000 for an airplane seem almost reasonable.

I've seen quite a few of those up here. They are an alternative to the typical dually pick up for towing the trailers from the factories(there are an assload of RV makers where I live) to the dealers. Plus the addition of the sleeper gives them a comfortable place to sleep, something 99% of duallys are lacking.

So, we went to see that Newport (http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/ctd/4428015649.html) today.

http://images.craigslist.org/00D0D_j3vfYrzjzde_600x450.jpg

The asking price is now $1700, which isn't bad. It's as solid as it looks, the 383 starts right up, and everything's there. Mechanically and externally, all it really needs is a rear window seal, a brake job, and lots of cleaning. Except for...the interior, which is a mildewed moldy hell hole that would need to be entirely replaced. There's also some surface rust on the trunk floor, from the bad seal in that rear window - but nothing too bad. But the interior would need a full gutting before the car could even be driven at all. As a result I don't think it will come home with us, but on monday I'll call a Mopar parts supplier in Texas and see if he's got interior bits and how much they cost.

The macro point being that the '69 4-door is more or less ready to use as is, while the '70 2-door needs enough work that you could buy the four-door for what you'll spend in parts and fixing, to say nothing of time.

Obviously, two doors too many, but still, they're such clean looking cars.

Yeah, "clean" is a really good way to describe the 'Fuselage' styling ChryCo was using. The wrap-around front bumper, big, smooth, slab sides, and the understated tail treatment have aged really well.

And don't pay any attention to Nervous Nellie, a.k.a. TSG. He probably puts on a seat belt in bed and wears a helmet when climbing stairs.

I've always liked them. I can remember that a secretary at school had a '69 Fury III sedan when I was little - it was a bit down at the heel then, but it looked very different. They're sort of space-age themed cars - they're very 1960s - and were probably very quickly out of fashion in the decade that followed, where ornamentation was key to popularity - witness the explosion of opera windows, faux Rolls-Royce grills, vinyl padding and tops, etc.

Yeah, a four door hardtop is more vulnerable, it's true, but not so much more vulnerable, and when you consider that another MGB/GT was recently on my radar, I think you'd fare far better in one of these than one of those if the impact was bad enough.

As I get older I'm getting less willing to put myself in harm's way. This is one reason why I'll essentially no longer consider a pre-1968 car - lack of any shoulder belts or serious restraint systems for the front seat. You can add them to an older car, of course, but then you're cutting into an old car which is never such a happy thing. When I was 20 and it was just me, I'd drive just about anything.

We'll see how this one drives in a few days.

Shame about the paint on that Biscayne. I'd feel more comfortable spending the money to fly out and buy the thing if I could see the original paint and hence the rust situation. I don't think it's a particularly desirable car but without the new paint I'd pay asking price with confidence knowing I could easily get twice that here in CA.

Littleton is convenient for me if you'd like me to go look at it, smell the interior, look for bloodstains in the trunk, examine the seller and his surroundings 'cause we all know you buy the owner and not the car, and take 10,000 pics if that will help. I am gainfully employed during the week so this would have to be Saturday afternoon at the earliest, which is probably way too late. So I guess this is a worthless offer, mostly.

Seriously - PM me if you want me to go see it. I can probably make it happen.

It's more the amazing variety on the Denver CL than anything I do. Sure, sometimes I search for specific things but today I just set my maximum year at 1990, changed view to gallery so I can see large thumbnails, and started scrolling.

My job has two parts - analysis, which takes a lot of brain power, and then production, which is just rote data entry and then documenting my work by attaching documents in SAP software. That takes a print-to-file function that takes 30 seconds to a minute to process each time. While I wait for the "done" window to pop up, I have a small browser window open and can scan an entire CL page or post a car in the time it takes for each document to be saved.

It took me maybe an hour to make that post above but it only took me a few actual minutes of down time while I would otherwise just be watching the hourglass and waiting for the job to finish.

It's an '87+ aftermarket body kit on an -'86 car. The headlights, corner lights, and grille are the wrong shape. It looks passable, but not good. Still, '84 was a very good year, and the 8v turbos are charming. :D

Seems a little iffy? $4k for a non-running, high-mileage, salvage title truck? Isn't that only saving a couple grand and taking on a few bugaboos?

Godson
May 8th, 2014, 03:46 PM
It is running. The cam phasers adjust cam timing. Those trucks can run for 30k+ miles with them busted, they just run like shit.

A similar truck in running condition is worth 8k+, and 150k miles is nothing for a 10 year old 4x4 truck. I was looking at a 2wd with 310k miles for 4700 and a 4x4 with 280k miles for 5300.

Salvage doesn't bother me, especially for hail damage.

If the Stirling was stick, I'd be tempted. If I thought I could get that Peugeot for $3000 I'd take it as well.

Hmm... something odd about the 405. It has power windows, but I only see switches for the front windows, and there are no cranks in the back either? Do the rear windows not go down? O_o

thesameguy
May 14th, 2014, 09:47 PM
I think the 405's window switches are in the back of the center console. That's my recollection.

The 827 - wow - I looked for that exact car for year but gave up. If it wasn't Burning Man season, I would be on a plane to get it, no joke. I would prefer a manual too, but I don't think we ever got the hatches with a manual. Sterlings with manuals are rare to start with, and the 827s rarer still.

How odd ... we get those Rover's here, and you quite literally would have to pay me to take one.

That generation of Rover is legendary for complete mechanical failures, and absolutely nothing else.

One of my manager's had a Rover 220 (Tomcat), the front wheel drive turbo go fast car. 55,000km on the clock. One gearbox failure, two headgasket failures, the paint was see through, and he very nearly had to give it away (he dumped it at an auction house and left it there until somebody purchased it). Also worth noting, he was a pretty darn good mechanic, and drives like a total grandma, so we're not talking incompetence or abuse. Purely mechanical weakness.

thesameguy
May 15th, 2014, 10:19 AM
Oh, they're utter crap to be sure but in the US pretty rare and among a tiny group of '80s European luxury 5-door hatchbacks - a group really limited to the Sterling, Saab 9000, and Merkur Scorpio. The 9000 was a damned decent car, the other two it's a tossup which is worst. I'd own either for the sheer WTF value, but I think the better car is probably the Scorpio, if for no other reason than all its crappy bits (engine and transmission, namely) are readily replaceable with much cooler stuff. The best hope on the Sterling is the Acura 3.2 (?, IIRC) + 5-speed swap, which is still pretty meh - especially in the face of a SOHC V8/T56 swap into the Scorpio. ;)

I think the 405's window switches are in the back of the center console. That's my recollection.

Yup. A compromise made by management. Originally, Peugeot wanted to equip the cars as they did in France - power fronts, cranks in the back. PMA (Peugeot Motors of America) wisely persuaded them (with considerable rancor between all parties) that they should not do this, because Americans would say "WTF." The switches ended up on the console because no provision had been made to put them on the door, IIRC.

Looking back, when I had my 405s, they were still basically just ordinary used cars, not even ten years old at the time I had them.

The 827 - wow - I looked for that exact car for year but gave up. If it wasn't Burning Man season, I would be on a plane to get it, no joke. I've actually seen this guy in Seattle. He's got several Sterlings, the nicest of which is a Silver 827 manual. I'll admit, it's tempting, but not my cuppa.

KillerB
May 15th, 2014, 08:50 PM
Yeah, Sterlings are the bottom of the barrel in the US, but their combination of Japanese running gear and British interiors are cool, I've always liked the nü-Rover SD1 style, and I live in one of the few places in the US where I probably could get decent independent mechanics.

That 405 really is calling to me, but I have no good reason to own it or much of a place to put it... I have a spare parking spot now but I'm not giving up my one garage spot for a 405 when that's whether the Challenger lives.

Back end looks maybe a bit shinier than the front; ask about damage history. edit: owner needs to me more careful with his jack based on teh big ol' dent in the rocker under the mirror.

I am putting the pieces together. It'll be really tough over the next 2 months. But I *think* I can swing it.

As it needs tires (~800) and front brakes (~100). The guy said he was flexible on price, but wasn't going to get raped on the deal. I am thinking he was hinting at 4500, but I don't really know.

Everything else was legit on it though. Wheels didn't have any signs of corrosion either.

Somewhere I have a stack of old '70s photos - the square ones with the round corners for those who remember them - of dozens of geniune '70s custom vans. I need to find them and scan a few. You guys would love 'em.

From about 1976 to 1981, my father was a salesman for a van conversion company that bought plain jane vans from Detroit and made them into "custom vans". The term "conversion van" came later. My father sold them to car dealerships in New England and then in the southeast, which is how I landed in North Carolina as a yute. Before we moved, we lived in the same town as the factory and Dad took me there a few times, where I saw bearded hippie types airbrushing vans and other guys installing interiors and mag wheels with white-letter tires and whatnot. I can smell the naugahyde now, just thinking about it.

Dad always had a demo model to drive and we went through several vans that way when I was a kid. We traveled in them as a family on weekends and of course they all had CB radios. Everyone said my Dad looked like Burt Reynolds back then, and he really did, complete with the moustache. I would laugh when he would get on the CB on the highway with all the jargon of the day - this was exactly the era of Smokey And The Bandit and Convoy and probably about the time someone in Hollywood was getting the idea for The Dukes Of Hazzard. Dad logged a ton of miles in those days and was an early adopter of radar detectors - the earliest was called "The Snooper" and it hung from the rearview mirror and plugged into the lighter, as I guess they still do? This was back when police radar guns were big bulky things that hung out the window of their cars - not hand-held - and were called "hair dryers" on the CB, as in "there's a bear with a hair dryer in a plain green wrapper at mile 77, and one with a bubble gum machine on the ramp at Exit 62".

The earliest custom van model I remember was called, and I swear I'm not making this up, the "Swing Machine". It was an airbrushed panel van with mag wheels and a bed in back and complete floor-wall-ceiling shag carpet. Later versions became more family friendly, with refrigerators and mini-sinks and bench seats that folded down into beds for wholesome family vacations. This was around the time that vans got lots of windows instead of earlier Scooby-style panel vans with bumper stickers saying "Gas, grass, or a$$ - nobody rides for free" and "Don't laugh - your daughter might be in here". It took me a long time to understand those.

Later the company added what I'll call "business vans", with all captains chairs in back instead of bench seats, and they'd swivel around. Recessed holes in the floor allowed for table legs to be inserted and the van could convert into a conference room instead of a bedroom. Thinking back, that smacks of desperation caused by declining sales, but what do I know? But these "business vans" ushered in the era of stripes instead of murals and high-top roofs, which my Dad's company was never into - seems like the high-top roofs and fender flares running boards came later, perhaps in the mid-80s, when "conversion vans" started to look like bloated mini-RVs instead of the cool hot rod vans of a few years earlier.

In '81, Dad changed jobs and that was the end of the '70s van craze in my life, and thus the end of this long and boring story.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled craigslist thread, already in progress.

Wonder what kind of mpgs that Saab 99 gets. Mid 20s, likely. The 4 speed isn't doing it any favors on the freeway, and old CIS is hard to get just right. My 99T would do 22-27 with a 4 speed, and they don't get much worse mileage (and under some circumstances better) than the NAs.

It looks nice, and I love wagons, but with that money on the table for a vintage wagon, there are easily a dozen other cars I'd choose over a '75 Chevy. I never liked that front end, and I don't see anywhere in the ad where he did anything about the 1975 engine in it. I'd personally try to go back in time to the late '60s or very early '70s. You lose nothing and gain better looks and potentially a better engine. My $0.02.

Well I really love the GM clamshell wagons, so with those I'm stuck with 71-76 models, and I don't do the 76s for obvious (CARB) reasons. Part of me loves the crazy loaded woody models, preferably an early Olds or Buick, but the clean lines on this one really speak to me.

I'm not so worried about the engine - 71-75 is pre-smog and you can do whatever you want with them. Rip out the emissions controls for now, then swap in a ZZ502. Not something I'd do to a Pontiac/Buick/Olds, but a Chevy in a Chevy is a no brainer. :)

I guess that's really my hangup - for that money, it seems like it should already have that work done. A really clean but undesirable year car that's entirely stock just doesn't seem that special. I'd rather pay a lot less for something I know I'm going to work on, or a little more for something that's turnkey - or very close to it.
