Luckily it was packed full of rust, didn't run right (at all), oil pressure light was on a lot, indicators failed to work (despite brand new roadworthy inspection!!!). Didn't bother driving it outside the yard it was parked in, as it would only just get up the ramp in the yard, and it was only a very gentle ramp too.

Weird. I was driving behind almost that exact same Wagoneer just a few minutes ago. It was lifted and had '80s-tastic purple tint, but roughly the same year and some color, and very similar wheels.
Wish the ad for the green machine had some pictures of the interior. I think I am definitely going to have to buy a van sometime. Either one of those custom/street vans or a big 4x4. I dunno. I'm currently leaning towards the former, but maybe just 'cause we've been talking about them.

Indeed. But $5500 is pretty cheap. When I was actively shopping in '03, $4k was low and $8k was high, with a good lot of the decent ones right around $5500. The last time I looked - when I bought the Jag - rock-bottom pricing was $5000 and a nice one was fetching E30 M3 dollars. Really, I'd be tempted to buy the one posted and - if nothing else - just sit on it. Alas, the cashflow and parking, um, flow are both tied up in the same, hilariously bad-judgmenty endeavor.

That Camaro is a nice match to the Firebird. I need to snap a picture of a car I've seen while cycling through a neighborhood near mine - it's a bone-stock looking '67 or '68 convertible, with whitewhalls and full-wheel hubcaps if I remember correctly - I didn't stop and memorize the details. It looks like they used to a long time ago before every single Camaro got a set of aftermarket wheels at the very least. It's old and dusty and looks like maybe it got rolled out of the garage to the driveway once every ten years or so, but I've seen it twice recently, so maybe it's a driver now. Anyway, no one cares about that so I'll be quiet.

Grudge match:
'80s Monte Carlo SS design team vs. '80s Cadillac Cimmaron design team!
As I said back then, "That is a Cadillac?!

My Dad told me he would buy me a brand new Monte Carlo SS if I got a full scholarship to college, since the car was cheaper than college. I'm sure he would have rather bought the car than four years of tuition. Senior year I took my '71 VW to college and was assigned a parking place next to a friend and classmate who had one just like this, including the aero rear window. It was said his father purchased cars with sacks of cash as he and his brother both went to the same college as me and each drove a different cool brand-new car each year. He was from Jersey and this was South Carolina so everyone figured he must come from a mob family.

I think once you're shopping any pre '90s VW, slow is the name of the game. AT Vanagon vs MT Vanagon is splitting hairs. It just doesn't matter - pedestrians will cast you sideways glances as they move to pass.

With only three speeds, you'd probably have to be going under 40 or 50mph to even have a prayer of 2nd being useful. I think the 3rd gear at 55mph and needing 2nd scenario just didn't seem very likely. Because what are you doing in a Vanagon trying to go over 55mph anyway?

BTDT. Suburban has a kickdown, but it's only useful under 40mph. It spends a lot of time in the semi lane whenever hills are involved. That was big reason a 4-speed auto was important for me on the motorhome - better midrange gearing.

George
June 5th, 2014, 05:15 PM
No joke.
Oh, I understand. I'm serious here. I saw that and thought, "I could buy that today after work and put my car on CL on Saturday and probably turn a profit on the deal and have something cool and fun and I only live five miles from work and it's springtime and I love cycling to work so I wouldn't put many miles on it and I love white cars and could use the room of a wagon and could put a could bikes and skis and snowboards in the back and parts are probably cheap and we could take it to Steamboat for our 4-day weekend coming up in a few weeks and the guys on the forum would be impressed and I'd buy a second set of wheels and snow tires and on and on into runon sentence hell."
I really thought about it, but then figured it was probably already sold, and my wife would give me hell anyway. Why am I so scared of doing a deal like that with cars when I'd do it in a second for a guitar or a bicycle? She's cool with that stuff so why not a $900 car? It's me, not her...but she makes a convenient excuse for my cowardice.
It boils down to the fact that I am a boring, middle-aged, cube-dwelling daydreamer without a hint of a backbone.
*sniff*
That Eagle looks a lot better than my Accord, too.

Am I the only person here who's ever had one of those? I briefly had a red '80 wagon that I inherited from my grandfather. This was back around 1990. While it certainly was a concept far ahead of its time, I certainly didn't enjoy it much. Maybe it was because I was in college and wished I was driving something cooler. I can see that it would be funky enough to be desirable now. But the white one, something about it doesn't look right to me. Has some of the trim been painted white? Are those older rims? Those are the same rims that were on my '80 and I could have sworn that they were updated in the model years afterward, as the grille was.
Not to lose sight of the fact that we're talking about a $900 car here...just curious.
George
June 6th, 2014, 07:00 AM
Dunno. That was the only pic. The seller didn't mention the interior, and that makes me wonder. Why is this only a $900 car? Sumptin' ain't right.
I never owned one but drove a few in the summer of '85 when I worked at an AMC/Jeep/Renault/Oldsmobile dealership. I figure if that's the same straight six as went in the Jeeps it's probably a decent engine, right? Surely a good running 4x4 car is worth more than $900 here where Suburus rule the roads in the winter.
And thanks for the offer TSG. I know you are serious and I appreciate it. No, I could buy the car now, but with young kids and little free time, I just don't need to complicate my life. I'll just keep driving the Accord until it makes sense to ditch it, and maybe then try to get something a little more interesting. Time will tell, but I'm probably stuck with old Accords for a long time. Our twins just turned six and a we're talking about college educations now so fun cars for Dad might have to wait...
*checks calendar*

I don't think Eagles have good resale value, and that's probably the price. An early '80s Subaru wouldn't fetch more.
That is the same AJR I6 they used forever, so you can swap it painlessly with a fuel injected one from a '90s Cherokee. Which is exactly what I'd do with it. :)

Do you have the option of a personal loan or something like that to give you a couple weeks to try and sell the Chally private party? That's what we did when my parents moved from the Axiom to the 9-3. Worked out well - three-ish weeks of interest on the loan was more than offset by the bump in selling price.
I ended up passing on it this weekend in an attempt to set this up. There's a guy looking at it on Monday so it probably will get away.
That said, I *really* don't want to sell the Challenger. I had an enjoyable Saturday cruising PCH with it, and I just don't think I can let it go. It was my first new car and my first "I earned this" sort of present to myself.
I'm going to be kicking my own ass in a few years when I have to spend $10k more to get a CYM RX-7, but that's just how it's going to have to be, I think.

Typically if a rotary sits too long, it'll be hard to get compression. The "ATF trick" usually solves the problem.

I think that Jag has been for sale for two years. I am pretty sure it was on the list when I bought the V70 in '12. I've seen it come and go a few times. I can't decipher whether it has problems for sitting for nine years or whether it has problems, sat for nine years, and now has more problems. Either way, three grand seems steep for a non-running XJS - and then there's the sitting issues.

When I was a young teen I liked reruns of Rat Patrol. With all the vintage/retro cable TV stations these days, one might think it's still being aired but I haven't seen it in decades. Looks like there are complete episodes on YouTube, however.
Here's the intro for anyone who missed it - the show was about four guys with two jeeps and two machine guns who somehow survived against Rommel's army in Africa. 10 Cool Points will be awarded to anyone who knows Hans Gudegast is without googling. He is pictured in the credits below but you might not recognize him with hat and glasses. Hint: I saw him just yesterday while watching a Planet Of The Apes marathon on the SyFy channel.

A coworker picked up a "New Edge" (99+) SN95 GT for his wife and says the handling is beyond abyssmal on real roads. He had the back step out on an onramp* after hitting a bump and said that the combination of bumpsteer at the front and axle tramp at the back makes country roads really exciting.
He mentioned that it does sound nice and goes pretty quick in a straight line, though. :D

They just need some context. Fox bodies were actually pretty decent handlers for the time. Certainly not on the level of Lotii, Porsches, or MR2s, but not bad for v8 with a solid axle. And- with the continued aftermarket for those things, you can make one handle pretty much however you want/your wallet allows.

It's hard, though, because this (http://fp.images.autos.msn.com/merismus/gallery/c431132a.jpg) is a far cry from this (http://images.thetruthaboutcars.com/2011/02/boss302-468x350.jpg). The latter is pretty awesome.
I suspect I'd enjoy driving a Fox body more than I would enjoy owning one.

* I had the same experience in a V6 Moostang on the freeway in St. Louis after the MWGTP @ gm's.

I think closer to 3-4x. Nobody really liked that generation of Supra - it doesn't have the MkII '80s cred and doesn't have the MkIV FnF cred. A few years ago my friend (who has a hardon for anything Toyota) bought a cherry 50k (IIRC) '89 in white for $3500. Admittedly, 50k is a lot more than 92, but I don't think $62,500 (or $30,000, or $15,000) is the premium people would pay for the extra plastic on this car. I could be wrong... I just don't see a lot of love for the MkIIIs out there.

It is, in fact, mostly the same - XU9J family engine (also used in Citroen BX). But there might be very minor differences in emissions controls, valves, and electronics - the USA 405 uses the XU9J2 (S) and J4 (Mi16), but the 205's use several other versions (JA/Z, JA/K, J1). It's been too long for me to remember what those differences are, however.

If you can find one!
It occurs to me now that I bought my two 405s at exactly the right time - old enough to be cheap but still essentially new-ish cars with a (admittedly thin) support network. Back then you could still see them fairly frequently in places like NYC, nowadays I don't think I've seen one in a couple of years (though there's an Mi16 for sale just about 100 miles from my house now). I think about 9,000 were sold here, and figure only about 15% of those are still on the road after 23-25 years, it's hard to keep cars like that going after awhile for anybody but the hardest of hardcore enthusiasts. Even getting a parts car gets to be challenging. I remember conversing with Renault people back then about getting R12/R15/R17 parts, they were usually writing to Romania for Dacia parts.

I feel like the Internet has got to make it easier than it was then, though.
It's weird, the 205 GTI has really been the only European forbidden fruit I've really listed after. Unfortunately the emissions business is still a pain in CA.
Maybe it makes sense to see what it would take to fit a B16A and transmission into one.

A Pug fanatic I know (he has an entire lawn dedicated to Puglets) spent about three years trying to make an Mi16 conversion work into his 309 Race / Rally car.
He then gave up and I think he is going back to the 1900cc that he started with.
I believe his conversion has been in progress for 7 years or so now ... apparently he isn't in a hurry.
Mr Wonder
July 23rd, 2014, 10:05 PM
That's strange, the Mi16 conversion for the 205/309 was really common over here. At one point it seemed like it was harder to find cars that hadn't been converted. Looks like there are seven on ebay UK right now.
Maybe this is your way in Joe? It would save you going to hell for putting a B16A in. :)
