You tow them both with this and then sell this beast in Kalifornistan for a cool $10K, after you go see Earl Scheib and The Brake Depot.

Well that would be tempting but I'm not sure if anything can be numbers matching and have a crate Hemi. Those things seem solidly mutually exclusive.
Also it seems to be in predominantly in bits and missing the wing.

Yeah, looking at the pictures I thought, "Well, where the hell is the 440?"
Think he doesn't understand either "fully restored" or "numbers matching."

We'll have to add this one to the GTXF moonshine runners fleet:

1970 Cadillac Fleetwood - $1400 (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/4592821066.html)

http://images.craigslist.org/00606_fNSUKKspE7G_600x450.jpg

http://images.craigslist.org/00g0g_3P9sIuswZ3r_600x450.jpg

1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 Big Block 455 Great Conditon... - $6000 (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/4579184572.html)

Were 455s available in '88? I worked at an Olds dealer in the summer of '85 and I thought they had 305s or maybe 350s in the Hurst/Olds and 442 models.

http://images.craigslist.org/00000_6pSw9W1bFbZ_600x450.jpg

I see stuff like this often and think, man, if I needed a car tomorrow, I'd just go buy this and drive it as long as possible. Get some snow tires and an aftermarket stereo with USB capability and it would probably last forever in my garage and/or in the parking garage at work where it's out of the weather.

George
July 29th, 2014, 10:52 AM
Yeah, I agree. Interior should be black too, or maybe red.

What's a fellow to do with a seasick green interior and flat black exterior? Why, paint the roof to match, of course!

This guy needs to learn what a hardtop is, however.

1966 Ford Galaxie 500 Fastback - $4500 (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/4592482897.html)

"Exterior painted flat black and the top painted "seaside to match the interior."

"This four door is considered a fastback ( it has a more swept back look and does not have the center pillar, so it's open with the front and rear windows down). "

I think closer to 3-4x. Nobody really liked that generation of Supra - it doesn't have the MkII '80s cred and doesn't have the MkIV FnF cred. A few years ago my friend (who has a hardon for anything Toyota) bought a cherry 50k (IIRC) '89 in white for $3500. Admittedly, 50k is a lot more than 92, but I don't think $62,500 (or $30,000, or $15,000) is the premium people would pay for the extra plastic on this car. I could be wrong... I just don't see a lot of love for the MkIIIs out there.

Not Craigslist, but very interesting. 1990 Toyota Supra with 92 miles on the odometer.

http://www.chtoyota.com/used/1990-toyota-supra-calgary-ab/dcm/brochure5/id3313279?seo#.U89No7H5N8H

They're looking for roughly $65,000 US.

I love the MKIII Supra. It was my first serious car in GTII. :D I took that thing as far as I could into the game and kept taking her out once in awhile until GTIII came out. I've daydreamed about owning or restoring one of those. But, no where near that price. Even if I find a perfect example, they just aren't worth that much.

You cannot go anywhere in this car without seeing fingers point since it's so unique. Took it to the DMV today and three different guys stopped to talk to me about it- one of whom was a Navy Seal who did tours in Vietnam. We chatted in the lot for nearly two hours.

Navy SEALs are notorious for accosting strangers in parking lots and telling war stories. Everyone knows that.

That Belvedere price is silly.

It's a Polysphere 318A block (which is much different and older than the hotter LA-series Mopar smallblocks), probably an older stock cable-shifted 727 vs. the newer linkage-type, generic "muscle" rims and an obnoxious fiberglass intake. Probably has a 7.25" rear end vs. an 8.75" Sure Grip, too. We can't see the condition of the interior but it does have a non-original steering wheel (which, to be fair, probably feels worlds better than the skinny bus-driver steering wheel but still). The brightwork does look good, as does the paint and sheetmetal, so that's a plus but the non-stock Sublime paint is all bark and no bite.

A rebuilt luxobarge/RV 440RB big block & A727 tranny , with a $2500ish splurge spent on a Max Wedge-style Cross Ram intake manifold & carbs setup (http://www.mopartsracing.com/parts/bb.html) and buying some "GTX" badges from eBay, would slot nicely here -- but them you'd be into the car for *another* $7k.

Here's a more realistic price for a 440-swapped '66 Belvedere -- $16.9k. (http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/plymouth/belvedere/1673127.html)

That messed up 911 is not on the win list, though. Sheesh.

That Berkeley is pretty darned awesome - I had no idea it existed. Great idea for a bike engine, but it looks like it needs a lot of work.

Drive wheels were part of our discussion, because we're really not sure what the best way to get power from engine to wheels is.

Also mixed on whether it's "better" to have his dad "help" (as in, do it all) build a frame for it, or try and mount it in an existing car. Lots of questions, we have no idea what we're doing. What could possibly go wrong?

The various bike-engined Sevens should provide some thinking material for routing the power.

Yeah, we looked at those along with some of the cars out of the UK that use bike engines. Ultimately we think it makes it easier to build the whole thing and then slap existing bodywork on it, but it's far less hilarious than a 1940s minicar with a bike engine stuffed up front. The other aspect of that equation is that both of us will be compelled to try and optimize everything if we have control over everything - whereas if we have existing sheet metal and crap brakes we can just enjoy the ridiculousness of it. :D

You would, but you can always just drive them around in the Pilot. Maybe even stash the bug in the trunk so you can hoon around the mall parking lot while they're shopping for back to school clothes.

I think I'd rather have a Bronco II than an XA10 RAV4, but I'm not sure. The RAV4 is clearly the better drive, gets better fuel economy, is certainly much safer, and might be equally competent off road in stock form. But the Bronco II has a sort of retro charm to it, and a 5-speed V6 sounds like a rarity to me. I'm gonna have to lean Bronco II.

What I should buy for my next car:

But that Bronco is only $2500!

Since becoming a father, I often think about how old my kids are any given time and what my life was like when I was their age. Being (regretfully) an older Dad, I'm often surprised at how much different my kids' lives are than mine was.

For example, they tell me they don't have chalkboards in school any more. It's all whiteboards, which certainly are cleaner but what about having to bang erasers outside when they misbehave in class?

About now in my childhood, when I was around the age my kids are now, my Dad was buying a '48 Willys CJ2A for $400. I figure that 30-year-old Bronco II is just about perfect for me to follow his lead.

Don't mind me, gents; I'm just deep into my mid-life crisis. :thppt:

Things aren't like they used to be, that's for sure.

But not banging erasers together probably helps your kids not get cancer, so that's probably ok. They can go bang keyboards together to get the Dorito shrapnel and paperclips out.

Although I am reminded that when I grew up, I spent most of my car time riding around in a 1976 Honda CVCC. My mom has that car from shortly after I was born until 1985, when it was given to my sister and mom got a 1985 Volvo 745T. A few years later she was t-boned by a distracted woman in a minivan, talking on her cell phone, running a red light. If she'd been in that Honda, she'd be dead. I don't think you can ultimately do enough to protect yourself from our increasingly, statistically, distracted society. Those people all wrecked their shitty old Hondas, and now have super-safe modern cars so they can wreak their havoc more confidently. Really sucks for those of us who aren't distracted, and would like to drive a Bronco II.

Sweet car. I can't make up my mind if I like the wheels or not. The wheel and tire size look great but the wheel design is a bit too "American Muscle Car" for me.

I vote for matching blue steelies with chrome beauty rings and dog dish 'caps instead of those mags.

Since old Volvos are so grotesquely derivative of old domestics, I feel like the wheels fit a 122 every bit as well as they'd fit a Ford - that is, awesomely! :) You see "old Volvo" and you want to think "European," but all the early Volvos looked way more like (at the time) ten year old Fords than contemporary Audis, Jaguars, or Saabs.

http://images.craigslist.org/00202_cQsG2s0UvHw_600x450.jpg

and move over a LOT of stuff my '84.

It's been for sale for like a month - I might just get in touch this weekend and see if he'll take $600 or $700 for it. At that price, it'd be a no-brainer.

Plus, I could grab the TBI injection system for a one day maybe Fleetwood injection swap...

George
September 16th, 2014, 06:15 PM
Yeah, but if it's that good a deal, why has it been for sale for a month?

(just playing devil's advocate)

thesameguy
September 16th, 2014, 06:45 PM
It's not really that it's a good deal, it's a just a specific truck that has a somewhat unusual combination of things I can use - or at least I thought it did. I think I may have imagined its 3/4-ton-ness. If it's a 1/2 ton, it's useless! :)

George
September 17th, 2014, 07:33 AM
Despite the beefy tires, I count six lug nuts per wheel, which means 1/2 ton 4x4, right?

My meager 'murrican truck knowledge:

5 lugs = 1/2 ton 2wd
6 lugs = 1/2 4x4
7 lugs = some weird Ford heavy duty 1/2 tons or the non Super-Duty F250s from a few years back - the older, smaller body style
8 lugs = 3/4 ton & 1 ton, 2wd & 4x4

JoshInKC
September 17th, 2014, 12:01 PM
Yeah, looks like 6 lugs - therefore 1/2 ton.
But adding to george's post, I think there was a way to get the 3/4 ton axles, etc. on 1/2 ton GM trucks, although it was pretty rare. Think it was one of those old "check the boxes for special options a, b, c, e, and g, but whatever you do, don't check box f" type of things.

thesameguy
September 17th, 2014, 12:29 PM
Yeah, it's definitely a half ton - I don't know how I got in my head it was anything but.

IIRC, you could get 8-lug half ton trucks and 6-lug 3/4 ton trucks. I've seen both - and I think the key factor was the rear diff, which you could special order in any direction. 6-lug, 350-powered 3/4 ton trucks are pretty common around here - which makes searching CL hard. :(

FWIW, what I want is an '88-'91 3/4-ton Suburban. I want it's interior and it's non-16.5" wheels for my '84, and I want to scavenge it's TBI system for Future Endeavors. ;) What's left is probably worth $300-$500 in scrap, so forking over $800 or so for this truck would pretty much be a no-brainer. I'd really like to find one with body damage or maybe drivetrain issues so I don't feel bad about taking it apart. I do have concerns if I find a Suburban with a nice interior that needs minor help, I'd be just as inclined to fix it as dismantle it - and I do NOT need two Suburbans.

speedpimp
September 17th, 2014, 12:43 PM
Description says "1500" which means its definitely a 1/2. GMC was 1500(1/2), 2500(3/4), 3500(1T) while Chevy was 10(1/2), 20(3/4), 30(1T). And at one point Chevy adopted GMCs numbering system.

George
September 17th, 2014, 01:54 PM
I didn't see the 1500 in the ad. I tend to read the text from the seller and haven't really noticed the newer data fields in the upper right corner.

In Mexico I have seen obvious half-ton pickups with short beds and the smaller 5-lug wheels of a 1/2 ton, but wearing 3/4 ton badges like F-250 and Ram 2500 and so forth. The first one or two I figured were just guys putting different badges on to look mas macho, but after seeing so many like that I figured Detroit must "upsize" their badges down there: 3/4 ton trucks (or at least badges) for everyone!

speedpimp
September 17th, 2014, 02:06 PM
And don't forget about Chevy adding in HD versions of the 1500 and 2500.

KillerB

Considering how much payload a US 1/2 ton can carry, the Mexican badges are probably more accurate.

I'm not up on CL scams these days; does this look fishy to anyone else? Consider that there are no Acura dealers in Maine and consequently not nearly as many TSXen on the road here as other places (though I see at least 3-5 per week), so certainly the market for TSX replacement parts is small. The other thing I noticed - other than the pictures looking like they were taken in completely different places - is that the spot on the map is in the center of a residential area. I would love to pick up some OEM pre-'09 TSX wheels for winter tires but this listing smells fishy to me.

Could be legit - there are ads like that all over Sac CL. Usually these people are buying cars at insurance auctions, and they either re-use the auction photos or take them with cell phones on the auction grounds. Often times they post the ads before the car is even in their possession.

I'd love to have either, but owning an early smog-controlled Ford in California sounds like a not great idea. Kinda bummed about that.

George
October 8th, 2014, 02:40 PM
You use the hearse to find bandmates and go on to become rich and famous.

In search of fresh opportunities, [Neil] Young and ex-Mynah
Birds bassist Bruce Palmer packed most of their
worldly possessions into Young's car (a black hearse!)
and drove from Toronto to Los Angeles. On Sunset
Boulevard in Hollywood, the hearse was spotted in
traffic by [Stephen] Stills and singer/guitarist Richie Furay
(who previously met Young in New York and had come
West a short time earlier.) The four musicians huddled
in a supermarket parking lot and immediately talked of
forming a band. With the addition of drummer Dewey
Martin, the Buffalo Springfield was born.

Awesome 323!

I remember when those things were actually reasonably common in California - if you wanted one, you could have it. I kept almost pulling the trigger but never did for lack of courage. Today I'd not hesitate given one in decent condition. Sadly, most of the AWD system is unobtainium, though, so any somewhat abused 323 is probably going to end up a money pit. :(

Thankfully, this one looks well cared for and not run too hard. I will watch the price carefully. I'm not likely to pull the trigger (though more likely than I was with that Isuzu) but you never know. I still have the challenge of where to put it. This one-car-garage thing is killing me!

The RX-7... I really want it but I hear these can be a bitch to smog. I'd much rather have one that's been in CA. Unfortunately, then, all the interior bits will be turning to dust. :(

Paging tsg to the V-12 Jaguar phone:
http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/4555781450.html

I think that Jag has been for sale for two years. I am pretty sure it was on the list when I bought the V70 in '12. I've seen it come and go a few times. I can't decipher whether it has problems for sitting for nine years or whether it has problems, sat for nine years, and now has more problems. Either way, three grand seems steep for a non-running XJS - and then there's the sitting issues.

Was looking for something else, found this car is still for sale...

I'd consider it for much, much less money. It's worth a little more than they're asking in solid driver condition. No way is it worth anything approximating that price in "broken, sat for nine+ years" condition. I'd love an XJS (V12, hells yeah), but I'm certainly not looking for one.
