Hot start issue means worn tips. Which means a rebuild. Not sure what it costs in the States but over here it's an easy £1k job unless you can do it yourself. At which point you have to ask is it that much cheaper than a mint one that's likely had the rebuild already?

Godson
November 16th, 2014, 05:59 PM
Mint ones are 6-9k in that age.

I can do the rebuild. I am just made I done have 2500 sitting around.

Very interesting...at least to this bored 4-cylinder & automatic transmission Accord owner. The color and aftermarket wheels & stereo are turn-offs to me on this particular car but it's nice to know I was wrong in thinking that only the V6 Coupes were available with a manual and all V6 Sedans were automatics.

Yeah, those four-door V6 6-speeds are pretty rare. I don't care for the wheels myself either, but they could be worse. As for the stereo, it sounds like he just added an amp and some thumping bass; the head units on those are not non-OEM friendly.

Just do it!

I'm just a dreamer at this stage, since my '99 Accord is running great, despite having almost 211,000 miles on it. I just bought a new set of snow tires for it before the current Arctic Blast hit us more than a week ago and I'm reminded that it's a fine winter car, whereas in the summer I tend to think of it as a minor eyesore and a slowpoke. With new sharp-edged snow tires, it grips like velcro and accelerates and corners as fast as anyone should in the snow. Of course I don't race it around town but I can't resist playing in big snowy parking lots sometimes where it's fairly safe to re-learn its limits after months of driving on dry roads on different tires.

The front end of the '78 Cressida reminds me of a Jaguar XJ6.

Like TSG, I couldn't resist searching for Cressidas, and found this car which I'd go look at if I needed to buy a cheap car today. I like to think a nice old car like this could gently grow old with my short commute and indoor parking at home and work, not cost me a fortune to keep. I see the original motorized antenna has been replaced, just like my '94 Camry needed to have fixed near the end of its life (and never got). That seems common for cars of this age with that feature.

1989 Toyota Cressida - Clean Condition - 109K miles - $2000 (http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/4744778616.html)

These pictures were obviously taken on a cloudy day, but note the reflection of the building on the hood. That paint looks good and along with the window tint that isn't all purple and bubbly makes me think this car was garaged more than left out in the sun.

http://images.craigslist.org/00505_kr4Ob6ypmHV_600x450.jpg

http://images.craigslist.org/00c0c_ciAzqLeXjCD_600x450.jpg

I'd probably grow to despise the motorized seatbelts. I've ridden in a few cars with those but have never owned one.

http://images.craigslist.org/00Y0Y_gkRZDPEzt8_600x450.jpg

Dashboard doesn't look cracked from sun damage. Front seats are probably pristine under those covers.

http://images.craigslist.org/00a0a_k8VLdQCJefx_600x450.jpg

Is that a 4 or a straight 6? I can't tell. I'm guessing it's the four because the seller didn't mention it. Wikipedia says choices were 2.4L I4, 2.8L I6, and 3.0L I6.

http://images.craigslist.org/00606_7lZG5P8TB53_600x450.jpg

The more I look at this car, the more I like it. I hope there's something old and cool like this available in this condition when I need a car - if only to frustrate my Dad. He has taken to calling my current car a "junker" because his history with American cars leads him to mistrust any car more than 10 years old or with more than 100,000 miles.

Edited to add:

Comparing engine pictures with the ad below makes me think the silver one above has the 3.0L I6. The distributor and spark plug wires are much easier to see and count below.

Way more than a 4-cylinder Accord, for sure. But I love those Cressidas almost as much as the generation before it that was designed with a T-square. Love those things and the similarly-styled Maxima of the period (actually prefer the Maxima).

I still want a white MX73 wagon so incredibly bad I've seriously thought about spending stupid money on one several times. They're not even that good compared to, say, a 700-series Volvo or W124 Mercedes that costs far, far less... but I don't care.

There is a two-tone MX73 wagon for sale in LA, IIRC. The ad says something like "I always wanted a white wagon and that's how I got this one." I almost responded to it, thinking I could buy it over Thanksgiving weekend (gonna be down there), but I just can't handle a new car right now. If it wasn't two-tone I couldn't resist, but the grey bottom half looks very after-thought-y and generally atrocious. I'd post the ad, but CL - crazily - appears to be done.

I like those years of the Maxima too - and it might be a better car - but the Maxima is FWD and doesn't have the exciting potential of an easy turbo swap. Or any swap. The available manual transmission is cool (all US MX73s were autos), but not enough to sway me.

pl8ster
November 24th, 2014, 12:19 PM
Hmm, yeah, the Cressida is RWD, but I'd be willing to put up with FWD to get a 5-speed in something like this (MUST have these wheels):

thesameguy
November 24th, 2014, 02:47 PM
Can't really argue. I have the fantasy of a turbocressida and it's a lot tougher to build a turbomaxima (which is too bad, because it sounds awesome) so the Cressida has to win, but they're both awesome '80s wagons. The Maxima was super high tech too, with talking warnings, touchpad entry, and auto-sensing shocks. Crazy stuff for the time, but typical Nissan reach-exceeds-grasp gadgetry. ;) Finding one where everything works might involve an act of God, but I truly have no idea how those systems aged.... except the voice system, which in the scope of 2014 looks like crazy steampunk-esque "technology" - http://jalopnik.com/5246380/1982-datsun-voice-warning-box-used-tiny-phonograph-record-just-like-moon-base-robots

Well it wasn't originally. Craiglist had their DNS hacked. But once it was fixed it took a while for everyone to have it propagate to them. Link here (http://gizmodo.com/the-bizarre-story-behind-last-nights-massive-craigslist-1662742826).

thesameguy
November 24th, 2014, 06:43 PM
Well, that's what I thought, but that does not appear to be the issue my ISP is having. They are having a routing problem - the DNS is resolving, but the traceroute dies at my ISP's edge. It's possible they intentionally killed the route so prevent their customers from getting viruses and that's all well and good, but once the DNS was restored they should have restored the route. And they haven't. And that's a shitty plan anyhow - they should have rerouted to an explanation page or something rather than just killing it anyway. My ISP was started by nerds like 15 years ago and got bought out by a local telco. The LEC had the good sense to leave most everything alone, but they were just purchased by a bigger telco out of IL that - so far - seems to be retarded. Ten years of absolutely zero interaction with my ISP because everything always worked and I've had to call them roughly ten times this year because dumb shit has failed - crap speeds, autobilling failing, CL down, etc. I'm just about done with them - I didn't mind paying 2x what Comcast or AT&T charge to support a trouble-free local business, but if I'm going to have issues I might as well save money and have them.

My old boss was ALL IN on the Legend. He had a pair of them and racked up 600,000 miles between the two. Somewhere well past 300k on the second his sunroof started leaking and he gave up, replacing it with a 2nd gen TL. The TL was "better" car academically, but the OG Legend was... a legend.

Love to hear those high-mileage stories about Honda and Toyota products.

I like the VW too but dang, why does every old Beetle in halfway decent condition have to be lowered? Not only does the front apron get all dinged up but it robs the VW of one of its strengths - Jeep-like ground clearance!

Oh well, at least he left the wind-wings in place and didn't install one-piece front windows like all the "Cal-Look" guys in the '80s did.

Dig the super-duty bumper mounts!

I think that Jag has been for sale for two years. I am pretty sure it was on the list when I bought the V70 in '12. I've seen it come and go a few times. I can't decipher whether it has problems for sitting for nine years or whether it has problems, sat for nine years, and now has more problems. Either way, three grand seems steep for a non-running XJS - and then there's the sitting issues.

FYI, still for sale -

That'd make sense. That's what my buddy did on his C5 -> '53 F-series conversion.

Godson
December 10th, 2014, 06:44 PM
C5 is way different though. The suspension design is almost completely stand alone and bolts to a lower frame that is then bolted to a passenger frame. IIRC the rear of the 'Vette would need mounting solution for the

rear :

upper control arms, top shock mounts, the transaxle, then mounting the subframe.

Front :

upper control arms, top shock mount, and subframe.

thesameguy
December 10th, 2014, 08:34 PM
Is that not how the FD is? I thought pretty much everything built in the '90s was built out of subframes.

KillerB
December 11th, 2014, 10:46 AM
I dunno about the front suspension, but thanks to the Power Plant Frame, everything from the engine to the rear suspension is tied together into one unit.

The suspension is double wishbone front and rear so I'm guessing fabbing up some mounting points wouldn't be TOO hard.

Happy to report this thing is still on the table. Seller is replacing the Suburban with another vehicle and there were some hiccups with that transaction. He thinks it'll wrap up before the end of the year, and I'm in no hurry.

He says:

The electric door locks don't work reliably anymore and the turn signal clicks on its own sometimes. Don't know what's happening with that but I don't drive the truck often enough to be bothered it. My mechanic had to replace some front suspension pieces a few months back. Apparently they wear out and the wheels can't be properly aligned causing abnormal wear on the tires. Hence the new tires. I've kept the truck totally stock with the exception of a DVD player and a custom overhead console to hold two video screens. It's all old technology but I had it professionally installed.

Sounds solid. If it is as he represents I'll definitely buy it.

Ford had decided they wanted to market the Thunderbird as a competitor to the 6-series, so the '87s went very heavy on both luxury and gadgetry. No idea what the interiors you can actually find look like, but in good nick they're a righteously comfortable car.

Most states here have non-existent or lax vehicle inspections, so owning older cars doesn't get prohibitively expensive in the US. In Illinois, for example, we just have emissions testing, and that's only in the more densely populated areas.

Also, that price is rather ambitious for an RS6 with over 100k miles on it. They generally fetch below $20k at that mileage. With that price, there are an awful lot of 4-6 year newer E63 AMGs to compete with.

I saw that and was actually trying to convince my coworker to buy it - he bought "some property" (five measly acres - in a place which probably cost a couple million) and was looking for a ranch truck. I was voting for that IH, he wanted a late '60s Chevy, and his wife went out and bought a KB special - '92 F150 with a six cylinder and manual transmission in '90s-tastic teal and white.

Sweet tap dancing Jesus wearing fuzzy bunny slippers. No one said that but those early '90s Fords were a marked improvement over the '87-'91's "aero brick" look. Those are the only Fords I consider really ugly looking. Also for the money that '92 can't be beat.
Also that old IH wouldn't have been a bad choice.
Also also, the very first vehicle I ever drove was a '70 Chevy C10(that really ugly pale green) with a 250 I-6 and Powerglide. Not a bad truck for the $100 my dad paid his dad for it.

I guess? It's just improved looks or no, those Fords were not good. Antiquated engines connected to underrated transmissions and indefensibly poor safety. If you're going into the '90s, the only answer is Chevy. I just can't support buying work trucks that can't actually work.

The Bitter SC is pretty cool, but: (http://bringatrailer.com/2015/01/14/one-of-461-7k-1983-bitter-sc/)

- It's a rare 80s car
- In California
- With Texas plates
- For sale

...because you probably can't smog the thing without spending most of the asking price on some unobtanium part.

That said, if it could be had for $4k, it'd be a nice candidate for an LSx swap, which might actually be the cheapest way to get it smog legal.

thesameguy
January 14th, 2015, 07:37 PM
It's such a weird scenario. I don't really see how a private owner with a weirdo car registered in another state could be denied transferring that car to California. This is quite literally the whole "49 state" thing, which California tried to prevent and ultimately failed. If you have a car which has been Federally certified and registered in any of the other states, California can't stop you from bringing it in. They can stop you from bringing a foreign car directly in, and they can stop you from buying a new 49-state car and bringing it home (for 18 months), but I really think if someone pushed the issue, getting a Bitter that is legally registered in Texas into California they couldn't stop you. I need to find some POS foreign car and try it... something that if it explodes in my face I don't lose my ass. ;)

thesameguy
January 14th, 2015, 07:44 PM
Or, I'm full of shit and it has been tried:

These requirements apply to ANY and ALL direct import vehicles that are 1975 or newer and to be registered in California. It doesn't matter how many states the car was registered in before you are bringing it to California. Doesn't matter how long ago the car came into the country. If you are trying to get registration in California today, be prepared to write a pretty big check to a testing lab.

They had some interesting stuff going on when they ran those cars here in NZ back in the day.

1) They used a qualifying fuel so scary that they had their guys wearing the full "ET is coming to invade us" suits on

2) They were struggling to get range out of them with the factory fuel tanks in them, so they inflated the fuel tanks with about a billion psi of air ... suddenly they had more fuel capacity. Then they had little inflatable tanks within the tank that they could inflate when the car was being tech checked, to reduce the capacity of the tank to what it should be.

Interesting stories you get told when you work for the motorsport governing body - but always several years AFTER the cheats are no longer relevant.

Yes, there was, actually. I remember reading about it at the time. I did some googling to be sure, and it looks like it was a 1995-only model, without most of the power options that were standard on the GT. Sort of like the last gasp of the LX 5.0.

thesameguy
February 11th, 2015, 10:27 PM
HWAT????

Novi, you need to step up your time table. Don't let it get away!

Edit: Also, derp. I was thinking the '95 was a mod motor and that was the motivation behind the 3rd gen Explorer block swap. Obviously not the case here. For a 5.0, I think the nature of the Explorer swap is actually just that the 2nd gen Explorer had the last iteration of the OHV 5.0. I think they actually even came with GT40 heads & intake. With a cam, that'd be cheap power.

EDIT: Man, that Mustang really is a total shitbox! Also, the '01-'04 V6 Mustangs used the very stout Split-Port (Essex) 3.8L V6:

With the addition of Intake Manifold Runner Control to (V6) Mustang in 2001, engine output increased slightly to 193 horsepower (144 kW) @ 5500 rpm and 225 lb·ft (305 N·m) of torque @ 2800 rpm.For comparison, the first 4.6L V8 mod-motors made 215 hp (160 kW) & 285 lb·ft (386 N·m); the lighter '01-'04 V6/M5 Mustangs can be picked up for navel lint.
